Hugh O'Brian- golden-age actor, dedicated activist and Vintage Beefcake

Hugh O'Brian (born Hugh Charles Krampe) was born in Rochester, NY on April 19, 1925 and died on September 5, 2016 at 91 years old.

Hugh was born in Rochester but his family moved to Lancaster, PA when he was 5 after his father became executive of the Armstrong Cork Company, where they would live for around four years before moving to Chicago, Illinois after his father got a promotion offer for the Chicago branch (later, in 1963 Hugh O'Brian was awarded the key to the city by Lancaster Mayor George Coe.) Chicago is where the family would remain. They lived in Winnetka, Illinois.

Hugh attended the University of Cincinnati for one semester before dropping out to enlist in the Marine Corps during WWII at the age of 17, making him the youngest Marine drill instructor ever (still today). After WWII ended he planned to go back to college to become a lawyer, and was accepted to Yale University! However, he began dating an aspiring actress and was with her in Hollywood. She was in a play and he would attend her rehearsals. One day the lead actor failed to show up so the director of the play asked him to read lines. He was so good that he landed the role and the other actor was let go. The play went on to receive amazing reviews and an agent reached out to him offering him a contract! He decided to change his name from Hugh Krampe to Hugh O’Brian for the entertainment industry (his mother’s family name was O’Brien but when someone misspelled it as O’Brian he decided to keep it that way).

He worked consistently in mostly B films but his big break came in 1955 when he landed the role of lawman Wyatt Earp on ABC, making him a TV star. The series became a hit and spearheaded the “adult Western” tv genre along with Gunsmoke and Cheyenne, which debuted the same year as Wyatt. Wyatt Earp ran from 1955-1961 and was in the Top 10 ratings all of its six seasons.

While starring on his own show he did make guest appearances on other television shows and that continued into the 1960s. He also starred in numerous films throughout the 1960s. In 1971 he starred in a Pilot for a series that would become the series “Search”, which lasted only one season (1972-1973). In 1976 he starred in the John Wayne flick “The Shootist” and then In 1977 he was one of the featured actors for the 2 hour premiere of “Fantasy Island”. In the early 90s he reprised his role as Wyatt Earp in 3 different projects, including an indie flick.

In June of 2006 he married his girlfriend of 18 years (who was 27 years younger than him). She was his first and only marriage, as he never cared to get married and was more of a playboy throughout his life than a family man (despite having one son after he knocked up a photographer) but she made an honest man out of him. She was a teacher and they spent their honeymoon studying at Oxford University. Hugh was a strong lover and believer of the importance of education and believed "an active mind is as important as an active body.".

There have been 3 people since his death who have come forward claiming he was their biological father ( not counting the one son he did have). He certainly was a beautiful man who got around. Women loved him.

In 1958 Hugh started the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Foundation (HOBY), a nonprofit youth leadership-development program for high-school scholars. HOBY sponsors 10,000 high school sophomores annually through its over 70 leadership programs in all 50 states and 20 countries.

R27 just because he wouldn't fuck your ugly, pockmarked ass doesn't mean he didn't fuck a man. Go poop in the corner - that's all the action you can handle.

by Anonymousreply 36April 19, 2024 7:04 PM

R33 the cowboy photo is for his tv show that made him a star at the time. If an actor played a cowboy today you would see photos of him in cowboy gear…

by Anonymousreply 37April 19, 2024 7:10 PM

R36 no. He was hetero. He didn’t fuck men in general. The way you don’t fuck women is the way straight men don’t fuck men. Welcome to real life.

The irony of you being on a thread about Hugh O’Brian is outstanding. He was someone who took education and hard work seriously throughout his life. You don’t have an education and live off your family. He would have no respect for you the way the rest of us don’t.

by Anonymousreply 38April 19, 2024 7:12 PM

He avoided being typecast as Wyatt Earp while it was on the air by doing tons of other gigs at the same time as doing that show. He would make guest appearances on other shows, “Playhouse 90” and “Desilu Playhouse”, filmed a few B movies and did plays while starring on the show. He also had a brief stint on Broadway in 1960. He didn’t want the public to view him as just Wyatt Earp.

by Anonymousreply 39April 19, 2024 7:16 PM

OP he was literally labeled a “beefcake” by the media in the 1950s. They referred to him as simply a “beefcake”. Like r39 stated, he started appearing in tons of guest spots and taking on plays etc. to not fall into the “beefcake” typecasting that would limit his career, especially as he gets older.

by Anonymousreply 40April 19, 2024 7:20 PM

That troll is back! …”You don’t have an education and live off your family…”

by Anonymousreply 41April 19, 2024 7:20 PM

School? I graduated from college years ago! It’s disgusting someone like you exists. Sitting around all day every single day doing nothing. You aren’t old. Go outside and do something. A trade? Anything. Youre pathetic.

by Anonymousreply 47April 19, 2024 7:35 PM

r35 he must not have enjoyed the singing career. Hugh attended the Farewell show of Diana Ross & The Supremes in 1970 and participated in the celebrity sing along portion of Let The Sunshine In but refused to let Motown release it on their soundtrack album so he got edited out.

by Anonymousreply 48April 19, 2024 7:36 PM

PS Muriel doesn’t want that poster here either. He’s a bottom barrel human.

by Anonymousreply 49April 19, 2024 7:36 PM

R48 I don’t think he wanted a music career as a full time thing but probably was told to release one while his show was on air to bank off it more. Or he just wanted to experience making one album. He was a man who loved to keep busy and learn new things. He studied philosophy of years and was a scholar in philosophy.

Hugh O'Brian's first and only marriage happened in 2006 when he was 81 years old. His wife was 54.

On June 25, 2006, at age 81, O'Brian married his girlfriend of 18 years, Virginia Barber (born circa 1952); it was his first and only marriage. The ceremony was held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Robert Schuller officiating. Barber, who had been married once previously, is a teacher by profession and the couple spent their honeymoon studying philosophy at Oxford University. O'Brian stated that he believed, "an active mind is as important as an active body." O'Brian had one son, Hugh Donald Krampe, by a relationship with photographer Adina Etkes. O'Brian died at his home in Beverly Hills, California, on September 5, 2016, at the age of 91. Three individuals have since come forward claiming O'Brian was their father.

Rare photo of a very young Hugh in the late 1940s, while starring in his first play that just happened to fall on his lap (as he was in the right place at the right time). An LA Times critic saw the small play and decided to write a review on it (they weren’t there to write an article but just to see the play) and praised the play, but especially the young new lead Hugh O’Brian. That review is what caught the attention of an agent who went to see the play to see who he was and offered him a contract with Universal on the spot.

He was 21 or 22 at the time.

by Anonymousreply 79April 19, 2024 8:53 PM

I don’t think he cared about “stardom”. He was constantly working and attending seminars and taking courses to further his understanding of things and education. He was always very passionate about the importance of education and challenging your brain as well as your body. That’s why he started the foundation he did in 1958.

He also was wise and invested a lot of his money in numerous things, including stocks and real estate back in the 1950s and 1960s and struck gold because of it with time. His investments were fruitful and by the 80s he didn’t have to work another day if he didn’t want to.

Yes, he was gorgeous and intelligent and hard working and he did good deeds in his life and believed in giving back to people, particularly youth, and your community, but he was also an asshole, never acknowledging the son that was ruled his in 1969 with the photographer he knocked up. He paid whatever child support he had to until the child was 18 and then made sure to leave him (and his mother) nothing in his will, stating he had no children (even though he did have one). And 3 other kids from different women were claiming to be his kids since before he died and he made sure to include that they do not get any of his fortune in his will as well.

He was gorgeous and could have any woman he wanted and he did just that. He fucked different women all the time and slept around. He probably didn’t even know he knocked up these women. He should have kept it wrapped.

But I will choose to side with Hugh O'Brian who spent a lifetime raising and donating thousands, if not millions of dollars to foundations and other philanthropic causes that believed in and supported the education of disadvantaged young people. At Hugh's death a few years ago it was said that over 470, 000 kids had benefitted from HOBY, his own foundation.

Not any of you bitches judging him for being a whore to the point that he had children with random women and didn’t even know it when you know damn well you would have gladly dropped to your knees to swallow his load if you had the chance.

by Anonymousreply 140April 20, 2024 1:38 AM

I’d have wanted to be fucked by, and to fuck, his insanely sexy eyes.

by Anonymousreply 141April 20, 2024 1:44 AM

Typical Datalounge - drooling over a breeder who was a dog towards women.

by Anonymousreply 142April 20, 2024 1:50 AM

R142 the gay men on here are far worse to women than he ever could be.

by Anonymousreply 143April 20, 2024 2:08 AM

Lee Garlington, who wrote a bio on Rock Hudson, believed Hugh was gay. He interviewed dozens of people. Unless you are a moron, like R38. I guess you'd find it pretty likely he was propositioned by all kinds of men. Rona Barrett talked about going to interview him, and thinking he had swin trunks on, he removed a newspaper from his crotch and was 'up' for the interview. But she still felt it was a stunt to dispel gay rumors. She turned him down.

by Anonymousreply 144April 20, 2024 2:24 AM

R144 citation?

by Anonymousreply 145April 20, 2024 2:39 AM

R144 I am also going to ask for a citation. I am the one who posted him here and have known of him for decades and never once heard such a thing, and I’ve always been heavily involved in pop culture and media. He has never had gay rumors in his lifetime and was a known playboy. Not just assumed, known. One doesn’t have children you don’t even know about by not having sex with women. One child was confirmed his. The other 3 never found out. Either way, he was always attached to a woman.

Thank you in advance.

by Anonymousreply 146April 20, 2024 2:45 AM

I decided to do a deep dive on what r144 claims and can not find a single source or article that claims this. R144 we need a citation since you made the claim.

by Anonymousreply 147April 20, 2024 2:50 AM

I was gobsmacked by his beauty in an episode of The Virginian that I saw him in, and he did give me gay vibes in it.

by Anonymousreply 148April 20, 2024 2:59 AM

“He gave me gay vibes” doesn’t make someone gay. Especially when you claim that about every attractive white man.

Where is the citation to back up your claim?

by Anonymousreply 149April 20, 2024 3:01 AM

^I said he gave me gay vibes. ME, being the operative word. I did not say that he was gay, or that the vibes were a 100% accurate tell that he was, in fact, a homosexual. So kindly fuck off.

by Anonymousreply 150April 20, 2024 3:03 AM

R150 there are at least two of us waiting for a citation. I suggest you provide it…

by Anonymousreply 151April 20, 2024 3:06 AM

He was stalwart, conventionally masculine and seemed like a smart, decent person (as an actor).

But he lacked that extra charm or whatever it is that makes a big career. I wondered If he was just too big, but that didn't seem like the issue, except for limiting his actress partners, because the size difference can get silly to look at on screen.

by Anonymousreply 152April 20, 2024 3:10 AM

Majority of actors never have a career to begin with. They can’t even get their foot in the door. An acting career literally fell on his lap. He wanted to be a lawyer. He was presented with an opportunity and he took the opportunity and it worked.

Not everyone is gonna be a big A Lister. He was an A List tv star while his show was on the air. After that he was sort of a legacy tv star who did a lot of appearances, some films and some plays. He did Broadway briefly. He was never hurting for money. He lived a very easy and charmed life since young.

People forget most tv stars back then weren’t big movie stars. It wasn’t how it is now. Sometimes movie stars made appearances on tv as a guest but that was about it. There were tv stars and there were movie stars. He was the former. The movies he did were mostly B movies and tv movies, which makes sense for a tv star.

by Anonymousreply 153April 20, 2024 3:16 AM

This was a man who was accepted to Yale Law. He didn’t “seem” smart. He was smart. He’s from an upper middle class family. He himself went on to own numerous homes, including one in Beverly Hills and a beautiful Malibu beach house, as well as a bowling place and numerous other places. That wasn’t a man struggling. He did well for himself and was smart with his finances.

I wasn’t sure if this was a fever dream or not so I had to look it up and it isn’t a fever dream, he was on Celebrity Bowling back in the 70s. I used to love that show! That was a real reality tv game show. Barely any editing. It played smooth. It would never do well today but was a hit then and they got tons of tv stars.

His episode was with William Shatner (looking handsome), Michelle Lee and Fran Jeffries.

Some of the episodes are available on Freevee or Tubi or YouTube.

There's an old, old DL thread on Hugh where gay spec was rampant. It mentioned time spent at Finlandia Baths. It started on 9/18/2011. Also a Boomer and Beefcake thread where it mentions Lee Garlington's take on Hugh. Yes - all speculative. He was gorgeous, what gay guy wouldn't have wanted him to be gay. He kept a lower profile than a lot of 50's Western hunks. He seemed to work when he wanted to. He would have been any gay man's dream man.

by Anonymousreply 166April 20, 2024 10:39 AM

He looks shorter in that Celeb Bowling vid. Shatner is short-ish and Jed Allen was tall, and Hugh was in between, so maybe he was average height.

by Anonymousreply 171April 20, 2024 12:51 PM

R165 ok, post that thread here?

by Anonymousreply 172April 20, 2024 12:52 PM

R166 you can’t post it because it doesn’t exist. Why? Because you once again lied. All you do is lie. And that isn’t a wise thing to do when you have people watching your every post.

by Anonymousreply 173April 20, 2024 12:53 PM

R168 that isn’t a citation. A DLer coming here claiming something isn’t a citation. The fact they can’t post a single ARTICLE or book that claims this is because it doesn’t exist.

The fact you thought that is a citation says so much though. But you want people to believe you’re an educated man? You’re everything DL dislikes and everything Hugh himself would loathe. You’re a low life and pathetic. No job. No education. Sitting on here all day.

by Anonymousreply 174April 20, 2024 12:55 PM

Imagine having so much time on your hands that you’re on the internet making up lies about a dead actor who you just discovered yesterday?

There was no thread on him in 2011, or throughout the 2010s for that matter. I did a time check via database. That poster will be red tagged AGAIN soon if he doesn’t get it together. We aren’t playing games with him anymore.

by Anonymousreply 175April 20, 2024 1:02 PM

Haven’t a lot of old Datalounge threads been deleted by Muriel?

by Anonymousreply 176April 20, 2024 1:03 PM

R176 if you have access to internet databases you can still find stuff that has been “deleted”. The saying once something is posted to the internet it is forever there isn’t just a saying, it’s true. You thought because threads get deleted that means you can lie. However, that isn’t a source.

A. You weren’t even on this site in 2011 to know. You were born in the 00s. We have your information.

B. There is no thread on him claiming this.

C. Even if there were a thread saying this (which there isn’t), that isn’t a citation. You claimed a famous author said this. If they did there would be some articles or quotes from books on this. Nothing exists on this. Why? Because it doesn’t exist. Even in backup databases.

Get off of here. Go to school. Get a job. Move on. You do not fit in with us. We don’t lie about things like this. He was always linked to women. Cool. You needing to make up lies says too much. Especially when people are watching your posts due to some very serious lies you’ve spread.

by Anonymousreply 177April 20, 2024 1:11 PM

You never hear or read the term “confirmed bachelor” anymore, which was once used to describe an unmarried male of a certain age.

by Anonymousreply 178April 20, 2024 1:23 PM

The term “bachelor” in general is hardly used outside of that awful show.

by Anonymousreply 179April 20, 2024 1:30 PM

He looks about 2 to 3 inches taller than Shatner. That seems accurate. He was 6’1. Shatner is 5’10.

by Anonymousreply 180April 20, 2024 1:31 PM

I think of Hugh in the same class as Gardner McKay, just too handsome to be believable. And I think Gardner was another actor who surprisingly was never suspected to be gay even though he never married.

by Anonymousreply 181April 20, 2024 2:19 PM

That says a lot of their reputations, as pointed out upthread r181. Back then the public would start suspecting something was off if a handsome man didn’t get married, and it could destroy their career. No one suspecting that they were gay shows that they had a reputation. The reputation was for basically being a whore with women.

by Anonymousreply 182April 20, 2024 2:31 PM

R181 . . .

by Anonymousreply 183April 20, 2024 2:38 PM

R183 cool. That was a great read. But why the …??? The article confirms Gardner was a playboy while on the show, fucking woman after woman in his dressing room before he was over it and quit acting, despite being offered the lead male role in Marilyn’s final film. He said no. Later in life Dunne ran into McKay who was married to a woman for 16 years at that point.

The … is for what?

by Anonymousreply 198April 23, 2024 12:01 AM
