Why are TESLA’s so fucking cheap looking and tacky?
That widescreen computer display panel ain’t the look, y’all. What an obvious attempt to cut corners and save a buck!
Just throw a $300 touchscreen panel on the dashboard and call it a day. LOL

I just saw my first cyber truck today, and honestly it looked better than I expected, weird - yes - but not too ugly because it was jet black instead of silver, which made it look like a sci-fi military vehicle instead of a middle aged, divorced father’s cry for help. Supposedly the interiors in the trucks are as cheap looking as those of Tesla sedans.

^^ But seriously, at worst, violators get a fix-it ticket for the missing plate, but even that is unlikely, especially if you live in California. The cops don’t care.

Who gives a fuck?
It's against the law.
You're required to have your license plates on display on both the front and rear of the car.
No exceptions.
It's so that the cops can easiliy identify your plates from the back AND front of your car.

Nearly half of the states in the U.S don’t require a front license plate. California does, but enforcement is lax because cops are too busy dealing with the huge population here. Fix-it tickets are rare. I drove around for years with an illegal window tint and never got stopped for it until I drove to Nevada. Oops

The cabin was more comfortable than I'd imagined but more in a high-tech way than in a luxurious way. The giant iPad thing would be very distracting to me if I was the driver.

I like how they do light shows to songs you download, with the windows opening and closing and the lights flashing in time. Whimsical. But I think most people who can pay for one of the higher-priced models trend older and want a little more luxury in their daily drivers. The fact they're ubiquitous doesn't help.

I drive a Model Y Performance. I previously owned a Model 3. I love both. I can hit 60 in less than 4 seconds.
The minimalist interior is one of the things I like most about it. A giant wall of crudely marked buttons is ugly. And as much as you may hate it, more automakers are moving toward putting all controls a giant main screen. Tesla was just ahead of the curve.
I don't disagree about the exterior looks being a little bland or kind of weird. But it doesn't bother me. The new Model 3 has improved that, and the Model Y will likely follow suit soon.

R43 - Putting all vehicle functions (operated by the driver) will create significant repair issues should any of those (climate, audio, navigation, safety/vehicle settings, heated/cooled seats, etc) fail. The technical ability of dealerships to repair a specific non-functioning feature is insufficient at this time. If your climate goes wonky then you lose that feature and repairing just that component can't be accomplished (depending on manufacturer). There are several Youtube videos about failed/malfunctioning master screens that pretty much disable the car depending on what failed. I recently bought a 2023 Honda Ridgeline which has Honda Sensing that consists of a suite of safety features that I mostly leave off due to personal preference. Once I set up the vehicle settings and audio preferences I rarely use the screen. The climate controls are just below the screen and consist of hard buttons that perform a specific function w/o having to drill down to a screen to adjust the temp or fan speed. Yes, many screen only cars allow for audible commands to adjust temp, fan speed, radio station, etc. but they are often plagued with the system not recognizing the command leading to frustration.
The minimalist look is fine from a visual standpoint but having to tussle with a screen instead of fixed buttons can lead to safety issues.
A perfect example is the new 2024 Lincoln Nautilus - it has a screen that goes across the full width of the dash displaying any/everything but is controlled by ANOTHER screen just below that! Talk about overkill.

by Anonymous | reply 61 | May 8, 2024 6:52 PM

R60, one thing I do believe about Teslas is that the batteries will give out before the car does. The reason Tesla was able to successfully start up manufacturing was because there are so few moving parts, i.e. the parts that break first. I’m not sure if the exact numbers but Teslas have something like a tenth of the mechanical parts that a traditional internal combustion engine does.
This is ostensibly the reason Tesla doesn’t produce their own branded replacement parts, there is such a low demand for them.

R58 - My 2023 Ridgeline (RTL-E) is a replacement for a 2014 Ford F-150 (King Ranch) that was totaled due to an unexpected mishap. I chose the RL over the other mid-size trucks (Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, Ford Ranger) due to it's larger interior, more features and overall far superior ride/handling. Got a 2023 in mid-January and after the test drive I knew the RL was the right choice. I got a good deal on the vehicle and 0.9% financing for 3 years on balance after 30K down payment.
I'm 6'2" tall and the RL has plenty of room and the seat is very comfortable. Mine is the up level RTL-E with all features (dual power seats, moonroof, leather, premium sound, etc.). The RTL-E was discontinued for 2024 MY and the Trailsport replaced it w/most of the features of the one I got except for the premium sound. The Honda Sensing consists of about 8 different 'safety' components that may have some value depending on how much and where you drive. This is my first vehicle with all that kinda stuff and I find some of it (especially the CMBS (collision mitigation braking system) to be annoying. Eyes on the road hands on the wheel!
The ride is truly sublime - very smooth and quiet over most road surfaces and the 3.5 V6 has got some serious onions when pressed. I'm getting an average of 24.5 mpg which is nearly 7mpg over my dearly departed King Ranch.
As you may know, the Ridgeline is based off the previous generation Pilot which is why some don't classify the RL as a 'real' truck. I consider it a very capable vehicle that has some truck-like capabilities with a great ride and handling. One really neat feature is the in-bed trunk that can hold quite a bit of stuff or loot if you are a Costco shopper.
Not sure what type of vehicle you are considering but if you want but the RL offers a lot. Attached image is similar to mine.

R65 - You are welcome. My 2014 F-150 was a super nice truck and in excellent shape w/ultra low miles. I had no intention or plans to replace it but life happens so it was the Rldgeline. I can only wonder how difficult it would be to pilot an F-350 which is super heavy-duty and much bigger than my old truck. The RL has a very spacious back seat (for it's class) so 2-3 adults could fit if not too tall. The transmission is a 9-speed with push buttons instead of a traditional shifter which I like although some people don't based on the Honda forum I frequent. I live in a rural, off-road area and I need the capability of 4WD/AWD should snow hamper mobility. The RL has one of the best AWD systems which is one of many reasons I chose it. Good luck with whatever you decide on for trips to the old Summer cabin.
Oh yeah - about Tesla. The only one I liked (style wise) was the model 'S'. The others (X, Y, 3) look like blobs with a nondescript appearance bordering on anonymous. If you want an electric vehicle and need to make a statement LUCID is the only game in town.
