If it is when you start up the computer, you probably installed a program that is starting up and taking up a lot of resources. You can check this by starting the computer in safe mode. If it starts up quickly then you can check to see what all is starting up when you run it in regular mode (if you don't know how to boot up in safe mode - google it it is pretty simple).

Top reasons:

Malware or viruses can also significantly slow down your system as they consume memory and CPU usage.

A full hard drive or insufficient RAM could also be a possible culprit.

If your laptop is overheating, it may have a damaged or clogged cooling system that isn't functioning properly.

However, you need to run a virus scan, not just the normal anti-malware. Whichever anti-malware program you're using will likely have an option to do a "full scan" - run AFTER you've checked for an downloaded an update to your anti-virus program.

If for some bizarre reason you don't have the option to run a full scan or want to do another scan, try Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, or Avira which are generally noted as among the better free anti-virus.

Also, click crtl+alt+delete then select Task Manager. Go to the startup tab and see what's running at startup. You may have inadvertently allowed a program to be run at startup which takes up a lot of resources. Do not disable anything until you google it to figure out what it is. Then, systematically disable stuff you don't need to have going at startup.

You may need to install updated drivers, or replace them.

I would check to see how much storage you have vs. how much storage you're using.

It’s probably Microsoft and Windows Update trying to update your computer all the time when you don’t want it to. Install available updates and then turn off WU for 90 days.

Microsoft discontinues update support for W10 in June or July. Which will be a blessing when they fucking leave it alone.

I did a virus scan like r7 suggested. And I don't see any startup items that are causing it.

Today it doesn't seem as bad. So maybe the virus scan helped.

Have you tried unplugging it, then plugging it back in?

Have you tried letting it go? If it doesn't come back to you, it was never yours to begin with.

Bake it overnight in a slow oven < 175˚.

Is your hard drive an SATA or SSD (solid state drive). If you have an SATA you might need to defrag it. Don't do this if you have an SSD as they don't need defragging. You probably should also run CCleaner (do this before defragging so you won't be defragging junk files). If you've never cleaned out the junk your hard drive may be clogged with it.

Also, run disk cleanup and select "clean up system files" to get rid of all the junk left after windows updates. Check everything that has files in it. You'll likely gain several GBs of disk space.
