Glenn Bishop- one of the early Beefcake Models & Vintage Beefcake

I was uncertain if I wanted to speak about Glenn Bishop due to some circumstances, but he was a part of Beefcake history so I will.

Glenn Bishop was born and raised in Grand Haven, Michigan along the shores of Lake Michigan in the year 1937. He began working out and lifting weights at age 13 and was a star athlete in school.

Bob Mizer started the magazine Physique Pictorial which led a strange Chicago gym owner named Irv Johnson to start a rival physique magazine titled Tomorrow’s Man. Irv Johnson then set out on getting some new beautiful young men for his magazine, and discovered 15 year old Glenn Bishop, and immediately recruited him and offered him $$$ to be a physique model for him. Bishop obliged and would be featured in an early issue of Tomorrow’s Man in a speedo as the table of contents without his name posted. The next issue would add his name along with his photo and he was given a spread where he was nude but letters were carefully placed covering his “private parts”, as well as a photo of him covering himself with a towel etc. Bishop quickly became a favorite amongst gay men and Tomorrows Man took off.

At 16 he would soon have full nude photos taken and a “book” of just him was being sold through mail. The ads were in the physique magazine but you had to order the Glenn nude book specially. Irv Johnson did not try hiding his age, either, even writing about Glenn being 16 and in High School and would keep fans up to date with HS accomplishments Glenn had etc. Glenn in a speedo was the magazines table of contents for a while until June 1953, when at 16 the photo was changed to his naked rear end and Glenn would officially be introduced fully to readers, in an article titled “Want to meet Glenn Bishop?” Bishop would be featured in the magazine in one way or another from 1952 to 1954, mostly for Johnson to sell the nude books he created of Bishop. After 1954 Bishop would start modeling for tons of other physique magazines with every “physique photographer” of the time. Meanwhile, Bishop graduated from HS early (1953) and went to the University of Michigan (where he graduated in 1957). After college he went to chiropractor school, where he would graduate in 1960.

Glenn quickly became the most in demand model in the physique industry, with every photographer who took physique photos wanting to work with him. He became the highest paid physique model of the 1950s. Bishop took tons of photos for these magazines up until 1957. In 1958 Glenn “went solo” and had ads printed in Vim magazine where fans could send payment directly to him to buy his own catalogue, filled with photos of himself. At the same time, the physique magazines were still posting images of him taken as long as 5 years prior. His images were being recycled and reused over and over again in the different Beefcake magazines throughout the late 50s into the late 1960 despite him not having taken a new photo for them since 1957! When he graduated from chiropractor school in 1960 a magazine even published he was now a Doctor along with an old photo of him taken around 1955 (the photo posted below was taken around 1957 but published again in 1962).

Let’s just say he was young and beautiful and 100% exploited, however, he at least banked off of it himself as well and paid his way through college and chiropractor school.

His story is a fascinating one but messed up when you look at it now.

PS the photos I’m using are from his later pics, when he was of age. I didn’t use any of his early pics (minus r8), which are still available online (people probably don’t know he was so young in them).

One of the pieces written about him by Irv Johnson in 1953. This shows he always openly acknowledged Glenn was a minor.

A few years ago I read a book called Male Beauty that had a whole chapter dedicated to him pretty much and how he was 15 when recruited and follows each step of his brief physique career and how popular he was despite the men buying the magazine knowing he was a minor.

by Anonymousreply 15April 23, 2024 1:41 AM

He would be 86 today. Do we know if he is still alive?

by Anonymousreply 16April 23, 2024 1:56 AM

Christ! Does Betty know?

R16 no idea but he has a page on healthgrades but his profile was never updated etc. so I don’t know if he’s still working (I hope not at his age) or alive etc.

But this is him.

But was he the gay?

by Anonymousreply 20April 23, 2024 2:15 AM

Sometime in the late 60s or early 70s he wrote a letter to one of the magazines going off on them because they kept publishing photos he’d taken years prior and he’d had enough. He was now married and started his own practice etc.

“Your purpose and magazine is of the lowest order and should be taken out of circulation. This country has enough trouble without crack-pots like yourself trying to promote abnormal sex ideas. Can’t you find something more worthwhile to do in your life rather than cater to queers?”

At 35 cents, Glenn was a true bargain!

by Anonymousreply 24April 23, 2024 6:11 AM

Yes, he is still alive. He’s retired. His wife also, who was a physical therapist. He has two or three children, one of them a son. His son is not the beauty his father was in his youth but he’s not bad. He was pretty cute when younger.

A recent pic of his son.

He has 2 children, a girl and a boy. The boy is younger. His daughter now lives in Miami and his son in San Diego. They often fly to Wyoming to visit their parents.

He doesn't sound very gay friendly at R21 which is ironic considering the photos he posed for.

by Anonymousreply 29April 23, 2024 6:55 AM

You don’t have to be gay friendly to pose for pics. That’s for a paycheck. He was also very young and taken advantage of. He was 15 when recruited.

by Anonymousreply 30April 23, 2024 7:00 AM

Something modern people can’t grasp about the physique models of the 50s. They were being told this was helping young men with their physiques by posing like this. The young men would see this and feel inspired to look like them. That is why most of the models used their real names etc. they were being sold a (partial) lie.

[quote]“Your purpose and magazine is of the lowest order and should be taken out of circulation. This country has enough trouble without crack-pots like yourself trying to promote abnormal sex ideas. Can’t you find something more worthwhile to do in your life rather than cater to queers?”

Where did this quote come from R21? It's downright homophobic. R29's post was a bit of an understatement! That was when the word queer was an extremely nasty and demeaning insult and was used by people who meant it.

Also this thread has become a bit creepy and stalkerish with posting pics of his children and family with Bishop still being alive. Where did all of this come from?

I don't know but I feel like you've crossed the line OP.

by Anonymousreply 32April 23, 2024 7:22 AM

R32 I’m not OP. And pot, meet kettle. I would gain some self awareness. ASAP.

by Anonymousreply 33April 23, 2024 7:29 AM

He was far more beautiful than the bloated out of proportion physique models of today.

by Anonymousreply 34April 23, 2024 11:11 AM

That's a body worth exploiting imo.

by Anonymousreply 35April 23, 2024 11:25 AM

Thanks, OP, for this thread.

by Anonymousreply 36April 23, 2024 11:44 AM

R28 that picture is the epitome of total homo MCM esthetic !!! I love it!! Thanks for sharing!

by Anonymousreply 37April 23, 2024 12:04 PM

Did he ever show peen?

by Anonymousreply 38April 23, 2024 12:12 PM

I'm surprised he used his own name for gay nude magazines instead of an alias like most others did. Even though gay communities and culture were underground back in the 1950-1970s, one's name could still surface into the public.

by Anonymousreply 39April 23, 2024 12:43 PM

Anyone old enough to remember Jim Stryker from early magazines?

by Anonymousreply 40April 23, 2024 12:53 PM

So he made all his money catering to queers then wanted it all taken down?

by Anonymousreply 41April 23, 2024 1:14 PM

R35 yes, but not under the age of 18. I don’t agree it was ok to exploit him at such a young age.

by Anonymousreply 42April 23, 2024 1:16 PM

R40 VintageBeefcake has a Jim Stryker thread.

R41 your comment screams of uninformed and and lack of cultural understanding and awareness.

R39 see r31. Educate yourself a bit.

by Anonymousreply 43April 23, 2024 1:18 PM

R37 yeah, a man in shorts and a straw hat with his two young children while barbecuing screams “homo”. Only to the mentally retarded.

by Anonymousreply 44April 23, 2024 1:23 PM

R35 anyone who says it’s ok to exploit the body of a minor is a straight up pedo.

by Anonymousreply 45April 23, 2024 1:38 PM

r43 uhh what. I am quoting him. How do I lack cultural awareness?

by Anonymousreply 46April 23, 2024 2:05 PM

R43 I saw that already. I disagree with that opinion. Even in the 1950s people would typically use a stage name or alias for acting and modeling. Perhaps he was naive to believe that narrative.

by Anonymousreply 47April 23, 2024 3:01 PM

He was 15. So yeah.

And most of those men in the physique mags used their real names.

by Anonymousreply 48April 23, 2024 3:06 PM

I'm not sure about that. Perhaps in the 1950s they may have, but in the 1960s almost all used aliases, or at least variations of their real name. Some would used their real middle names or nicknames.

by Anonymousreply 49April 23, 2024 3:11 PM

R49 provide context to back up your claims of “almost all”.

by Anonymousreply 50April 23, 2024 3:13 PM

Impressive V shape. Such a narrow waisted and slim hipped stud.

by Anonymousreply 51April 23, 2024 3:17 PM

R50 I heard this about 25-30 years ago from someone who had worked with Bob Mizer back in the early 1960s.

by Anonymousreply 52April 24, 2024 1:44 AM

Bob Mizer was a creep

by Anonymousreply 53April 24, 2024 1:34 PM

I hope no one thinks I am speaking about what men like Bob Mizer or Irv Johnson did with these minors in a positive light. I certainly am not. But they are a part of the Beefcake history and modern day “beefcake historians” like to either erase their existence or rewrite the history.

I do think it’s an interesting story though.

by Anonymousreply 54April 24, 2024 8:46 PM

R54 no I never got that impression from your post. I could tell you took issue with it, if anything. 😃
