Hal Holbrook

Raised by his grandparents after he was abandoned by his parents, he enlisted in the Army before studying at Denison, where he graduated with honors and created a successful one man show on Mark Twain.

Soon, Ed Sullivan was calling to put "the Twain kid on," and his career skyrocketed. Ten years later, he was tired of being on tour and quickly finessed himself to become a capable film actor, appearing in films such as The Great White Hope, All the President's Men, Julia, Capricorn One, Wall Street, The Firm, Lincoln, and Into the Wild, where he earned an Oscar nomination.

A political independent who has supported both parties, he and his wife Dixie Carter preferred to live quietly in the Tennessee countryside rather than play the showbiz game. He is Hal Holbrook.

He became a very honest man later in his life. Attached is a video discussing Carl Sandburg and Lincoln.

I'd rather be living in California than dead in Tennessee.

I always remembered his role as the bumbling, ineffectual father in the TV film, "Off The Minnesota Strip" . He's whiny, clueless, drunken, defeated, hen-pecked- and he nails it.

Great actor, unpretentious, charming, and down to Earth. A class act.

by Anonymousreply 8April 20, 2024 3:42 PM

An awesome guy. A true gentleman. He had an end of career role on The Sopranos.

by Anonymousreply 9April 20, 2024 3:43 PM

One of the greats.

by Anonymousreply 10April 20, 2024 3:43 PM

His performance in Into The Wild is genuinely heartbreaking.

I always thought he was really handsome in his younger years

by Anonymousreply 12April 20, 2024 4:00 PM

Wasm't he one of the first actors to play a high-visibility gay role?

by Anonymousreply 13April 20, 2024 4:03 PM

He was good in Lincoln, too

[quote] He had an end of career role on The Sopranos.

He worked steadily well past The Sopranos, hon.

by Anonymousreply 19April 20, 2024 7:08 PM

I loved Dixie Carter as Julia Sugarbaker. Hal played her husband on the show.

by Anonymousreply 20April 20, 2024 7:37 PM

He also seemed more professorial than a typical actor
