“Ozempic Face" is taking over Hollywood !

Why the long face? Ozempic.

Amid the weight loss treatment’s skyrocketing popularity, surgeons believe that Hollywood is experiencing a spike in the side effect known as “Ozempic Face.”

Several doctors claimed to the Daily Mail that celebs from John Goodman to Sharon Osborne are among those hit hardest by the alleged condition.

For the uninitiated, some side effects of taking Ozempic include sunken eyes, gaunt cheeks and saggy skin, often making the user appear older and more deflated.

I heard a doctor on the ABC in Australia talking about this, and he said it's true, Ozempic does tend to cause premature facial ageing. But they are not yet sure whether it's something endemic in the drug or just the result of a lot of weight loss, which may be more pronounced if you lose it fast or are already an older person when you begin weight loss. It is certainly true that people who have had bariatric surgery often get a similar look.

It’s a side effect to weight loss regardless of how it was achieved. Just like you can’t spot reduce fat, you can’t choose where to keep it when it comes off. Unfortunately, both the face and butt will deflate along with your moobs, gut and love handles. When you’re older, your skin is less elastic, so you’re left with sagging. Duh.

by Anonymousreply 33April 20, 2024 7:54 AM

exactly r33. Once you are over a certain age, weight loss comes with sagging skin.

by Anonymousreply 34April 20, 2024 2:26 PM

Yes I have AIDS/ozempic face and I actually have AIDS!!!

It is not like when I got dx with HIV though, I lost down to 114 lbs, that was not good.

by Anonymousreply 50April 20, 2024 11:27 PM

Ozempic doesn’t eat away muscle mass by itself. It’s simply the combination of patients not eating enough protein and instituting resistance training that leads to muscle loss. It’s such an effective appetite suppressant that you have to force yourself to eat.

5-10 years from now Ozempic and competing drugs will be in pill form and more readily available to a much wider base of customers. This is only the beginning. If anything we’ll be looking back wondering why we ever injected it.

by Anonymousreply 56April 21, 2024 1:46 AM

It’s true that every celeb I’ve seen on Ozempic looks older. It’s not just the loss of fat but something with the skin. And in some cases, hair thinning/falling out.

by Anonymousreply 57April 21, 2024 2:31 AM

The reason why heavier people tend to look younger than they are face-wise. When you lose the weight in your face, the skin will sag because the skin in your face is attached to the skeletal muscles but the muscles are not attached to the skull.

Physical fitness expert Jillian Michaels was on Bill Maher this weekend, describing the dangers and risks of taking Ozempic, Wgovy, etc. If I had any notion of taking this for weight loss, I'm convinced how wrong it is after listening to her and the research she studied. As she said early on - the 'secret' to losing weight is to eat less and move more.

by Anonymousreply 65April 21, 2024 8:36 PM

You're basically full of shit all the time when you take this stuff.

by Anonymousreply 66April 21, 2024 9:43 PM

by Anonymousreply 67April 21, 2024 9:45 PM

Jillian Michaels is neither a doctor nor a nutrition scientist. I don't think she even has a bachelor degree.

by Anonymousreply 68April 21, 2024 9:51 PM

I can't recall because they talked more about Maher's new book coming out in May.

by Anonymousreply 69April 21, 2024 9:51 PM

I’m sure Maher was eating it all up as he’s quick to denounce anything coming from Big Pharma.

by Anonymousreply 70April 21, 2024 10:01 PM

by Anonymousreply 75April 22, 2024 12:15 AM

r65 Jillian is not the greatest expert to go to. She was known for forcing her contestants on The Biggest Loser to take laxatives and unhealthy supplements as well as horrible diet schemes to get them to lose weight fast.

by Anonymousreply 76April 22, 2024 12:37 AM

OH... oh .... OooHHHH.... O Zombiec !!

by Anonymousreply 77April 22, 2024 12:42 AM

r76, except none of that is true. I follow Jillian and listen to her podcast. She spoke out against the producers of TBL and they started a smear campaign against her. The only thing she did was provide them with caffeine supplements which she uses.

Jillian knows her stuff. When I started losing weight, I listened to her podcasts and found some really great tips that I applied to my own journey and they helped. She calls bullshit out when she sees it and one of the things she's stated time and again about Ozempic is that it is unsafe and at some point, people plateau on it. She says if she believed in it, she would be making money off it. One of the doctors who attacked her views on Ozempic, just recanted and said he no longer agrees that it is safe.

You may think Jillian is a bitch and she would be the first to tell you that's a fair criticism but the truth is, she started calling out the show runners on TBL and thought they were doing things to the contestants that were unfair and abusive and they shut her down and took her off the show. She said Bob Harper had no issue doing abusive things to the people and she called him out, too. Jillian has my respect and her methods work, regardless of your personal feelings.

Ozempic is probably a bad idea for weight loss in the general public. AND Jillian has no appropriate academic credentials and no business dispensing medical advice and advising about pharmaceuticals. BOTH THINGS CAN BE TRUE.

by Anonymousreply 80April 22, 2024 1:08 AM

Why do people have such strong opinions about Ozempic? There seems to be a contingent of DLers who are very critical and seem to want to bring it down. Flip side, there's a contingent who are oddly defensive about anything negative said about it.

Clearly, she doesn't read DL because I told her months ago she was already skinny enough and needed to stop with the Ozempic already. She'll turn into a black hole if she continues using it.

Are you for real ? She's a popular TV personality of the past 20 years, known for helping people lose weight and become physically fit. She could make plenty of money off it if she worked out a deal with the manufacturer to endorse it and they could use quotes from her promoting it. You don't have to be a medical practitioner to make money off of this .

It’s curiously hard to find examples of people who lost and then regained weight on these GLP G-1 RA (Glucagon-like peptide receptor agonist) medications.

One extra thing that would concern me is the ability to absorb medication through your intestines if foods move slower through them.

I’d also watch for any longer term changes in liver function. And I would be really curious to understand if these meds could cause a loss in structural body tissue. By that I mean fat cells that pad and protect organs from trauma. I heard a new story about automobile accident fatalities increasing after high speed crashes due to internal damage to the structures that hold and stabilize vital organs.

You may end up with a thin body. But if that body’s internal architecture is more fragile and less resilient, we may see other conditions arise. I would be really focused on things like the muscles of the heart, and the long term function of the small and large intestine. I would also be afraid to eat food that could begin to break down and spoil inside my digestive tract. I see this creeping uncertainty when dining with people on these meds. Their relationship with food is really strange and complex because they are somewhat “estranged” from their digestive systems. I see people take only tiny amounts of simpler foods, and(one really weird example) eating only the garnish on a plate, and visiting the restroom three or four times during meals.

I know they studied these potentials before authorizing these drugs, but still I can think of so many examples of medications that got “Black Box” warnings and then discontinued because, oops, we discover dangerous side effects over time.

by Anonymousreply 120April 26, 2024 11:37 AM

My kidney numbers have improved. A dr wrote on my chart that I had Stage 3 chronic kidney disease. My creatinine has been high (as high as 1.8) and my glomerular filtration rate has been slow. It needs to be 60 or above. At one point mine was 28. GFR has been low since early 2020. Creatine has been high since at least 2018.

My creatine has been normal since I started semaglutide. It’s 0.82. My GFR is 70.

I had been sent to a hematologist because of high wbc in 2018. He never figured out what it was. My pulmonologist said it might be my mild lung disease)… it’s normal now and so is my diff (I was out of whack in all - basophils, eosinophils, monocytes, neutrophils). All normal now. I had a slightly elevated platelet coun5 but I was recovering from the flu.

My liver panel is normal.

I’ve had a high C Reactive Protein since at least 2014. Again, nobody knew why. Since taking semaglutide it’s normal. That’s at least 10 years of inflammation that’s no longer there.

My doc say Eli Lily is looking into the kidney benefits. They’ve noticed renal improvement in lots of people

I know each metabolic profile is unique, and positive outcomes like R123 are very promising. I suspect that these meds are becoming a key to a very fast path to a healthier weight range. Staying in that range without these meds may be a challenge to address in 60 weeks, when the meds typically stop working. Maybe these early adopters are pioneers in that they are navigating these newer interventions early in the life cycle of these medications.

It’s a really interesting thread topic. I appreciate the responses above, and Datalounge for presenting a space for this discourse. I really do.

by Anonymousreply 126April 26, 2024 1:35 PM

Being fat kills. "Move more" is not an easy plan to follow if you're morbidly obese. What ozempic does is that it is a very effective appetite suppressant, and on top of it, if you eat more than you should, you get violently sick. It's obviously wrong when people who are already slkm are taking it. It's a whole new breed of anorexic people.

[quote] Staying in that range without these meds may be a challenge to address in 60 weeks, when the meds typically stop working

I’ve been on them since January 2023. I’m now on maintenance, which I take every 2 weeks. They haven’t stopped working, I’ve maintained my weight since October 2023.

I don’t mind taking a medication every two weeks. I have to take arthritis medication twice a day and I take blood pressure medication every day (some people can stop taking BP medication when they reach their goal weight. I am not one of them despite my BMI being 22. But my BP is controlled with meds, so I don’t worry about it)

Mindy Kaling is pregnant, curious what happens to her now when she goes off the Ozempic.

As a diabetic, I've been on Ozempic now for closing in on three years. Hasn't stopped working, but over that length of time it's also gotten me to a healthy weight and also healthier eating habits. I credit Ozempic with probably the first 50 lbs I lost, and better diet/exercise with the last 30 lbs.

R122 I guess I don't understand why you gave me the "oh honey" bit and attacked me. I just made a statement that in a decade we might see that Ozempic causes medical problems we're not aware of now. I didn't get why you thought that made me sound like I was 85. I'm 65, btw.

They’re also checking into if semaglutide tamps down inflammation of cardiovascular disease.

Scott Disick's dug of choice is Ozempic. Seems legit.

Scott D looks like he's on heroin, not the O. He looks positively ghoulish.

R131 -

1. This is an anonymous site. Nothing is personal.

2. It was mostly a joke because...

3. The elderly generally hate anything new that challenges long-held conventions. 85 was an exaggeration to drive the point.

Does anyone know if Ozempic is a lifetime plan, or you just take it til you lose the lard then maintain a healthy, active lifestyle? My friend says you have to stay on it forever.

by Anonymousreply 136May 1, 2024 7:33 PM

r136 it's been described both ways from what i've heard. One way it's described is that it will have to be used "for life," but other sources say it's been used as a way to lose the weight, then can be used in a "maintenance way."

Probably at this point, it's really too soon for anyone to know that, as Ozempic was originally studied (and used) for management (and reversal) of Type II Diabetes. The use of it for weight loss is a much more recent thing, so it's doubtful they have enough history/data to know for sure.

I suspect initially you use the dose that helps you lose weight, then once you've reached your target weight, decrease the dose down to a level where you can maintain the weight.

by Anonymousreply 138May 2, 2024 8:32 AM

R138 how marvellously clever you are! I could never imagine it would work like that!

by Anonymousreply 139May 2, 2024 4:42 PM

R135 I disagree that because it's an anonymous site, nothing is personal. If it was meant for me, it's personal, not general.

I don't hate anything new that challenges long held conventions, and what I said didn't indicate that I do. It had to do with the fact that fad medicines sometimes prove problematic down the line. The fact that I'm aware of that isn't a product of my age.
