Glenn Gould

A pianist who died young, he was a child prodigy who achieved professional accreditations by age 12. He excelled at playing Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, composers he loved, while grimacing at Rachmaninov and Chopin.

By the time he was 31 he became an eccentric recluse, and focuses on playing alone in studio recordings rather than live concert halls.

Let's discuss the extra-ordinary pianist, Glenn Gould.

He WAS Glenn Gould!

by Anonymousreply 2April 19, 2024 12:44 AM

Glenn Gould was to Bach and Mozart what Van Cliburn was to Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov

My favorite GG performance is him playing Die Meistersinger overture with himself:

He was playing with himself, R4?

His playing was very quirky and I suspect he did this to maintain an edgy, “bad boy” persona. Unfortunately, he ruined a lot of great pieces, especially Beethoven’s piano sonatas, with his antics.

R8 and his humming?

He was no Lena Zavaroni.

R7 - Yes, like those violinists who play both parts of the Bach Double Concerto and then overlay them. In this case, it begins around 5:45 and REALLY goes to town at 8:08.

Did he know Van Cliburn?

by Anonymousreply 12April 19, 2024 1:09 AM

R12 I couldn't find anything, but probably. However, Gould was a recluse in New York City while Van Cliburn was a recluse in Texas

Was he gay?

by Anonymousreply 14April 19, 2024 1:36 AM

Big Petula Clark fan.

R14 I bet he was asexual

by Anonymousreply 16April 19, 2024 1:57 AM

He was a big fan of Barbra Streisand.

He doesn't like me and I don't like him.
