“Waiting For A Star To Fall” (1988) by Boy Meets Girl is an underrated GEM of a song

They may be a one hit wonder but they at least had a fun one hit.

They did write two of Whitney’s huge hits so they probably never had to work again.

It's technically good, but overproduced to the point that it loses a bit of soul.

by Anonymousreply 1April 18, 2024 9:57 PM

It’s not meant to have soul. It’s bubblegum pop.

by Anonymousreply 2April 18, 2024 10:00 PM

Just about the perfect pop song.

Love this song. LOVE IT.

by Anonymousreply 4April 18, 2024 10:08 PM

It’s upbeat and catchy. It gets a lot of airplay at CVS and other stores that play background music.

For some reason, I always confuse "Waiting for a Star to Fall" with Boy Krazy's "That's What Love Can Do." Both are very good bops, from the same general era.

How many times are you going to post this, OP?

by Anonymousreply 7April 18, 2024 10:18 PM

Leave OP alone. He clearly has nothing else in his sad, empty life.

Amazing, feel-good tune. One of my favorites from the '80s. I posted about it here last year.

Belinda Carlisle passed on it.

George and Shannon wrote Whitney's "How Will I Know" (which was originally written for Janet) and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody.'

The Belinda Carlisle demo of it is hilarious. To be fair to her I’m sure she must have sung it under duress and purposely sang it badly so the record company wouldn’t put it on an album or something.

One of the greatest pop songs ever.

R14: I’d say OP posting about a song they love is probably more evidence of someone with a life than someone who takes the time to look up an old post to berate them about it. I mean, who cares?

by Anonymousreply 15April 19, 2024 12:40 AM

R10 and R12 Wow. I like Belinda Carlisle and The Go-Gos, but that demo is terrible. Belinda's voice is surprisingly weak and she apparently doesn't have the vocal range to hit those high notes. Are you sure it was Belinda who passed on it, rather than the song incarnating itself to protest being recorded by her? I've heard better early-season American Idol auditions.

by Anonymousreply 16April 19, 2024 12:46 AM

This song is a massive piece of shit, OP.

by Anonymousreply 17April 19, 2024 12:54 AM

I’ve always liked this song.

by Anonymousreply 18April 19, 2024 1:05 AM

Belinda didn’t like the song, so she probably sang it terribly on purpose.

by Anonymousreply 19April 19, 2024 9:41 AM

I hated it back in the day. But somebody made an 80's compilation and played this song to it and I liked it

by Anonymousreply 20April 19, 2024 10:12 AM

R20 Me too.

by Anonymousreply 21April 19, 2024 10:34 AM

R19 where can you find a source for her claiming this?

by Anonymousreply 22April 19, 2024 4:02 PM

I had forgotten about this snappy little tune. Thanks OP.

Belinda Carlisle’s voice is always thin and tinny. It was okay for some of the Gogo’s stuff like Vacation and Our Lips Are Sealed.

by Anonymousreply 25April 19, 2024 8:22 PM

Her voice worked for songs written specifically for her.
