I feel like reading some Steinbeck

I’ve read “The Grapes of Wrath”, I read “East of Eden” (granted both were read in the late 80s when I was in high school.

What do you think of “In Dubiious Battle” or “Cannery Row”?

by Anonymousreply 29April 19, 2024 12:25 PM

I just reread his "The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights."

by Anonymousreply 1April 18, 2024 8:51 PM

Sweet Thursday is the sequel to Cannery Row, and is a great book.

by Anonymousreply 2April 18, 2024 8:52 PM

Cannery Row is short and damned good. East of Eden is worth a re-read. It's the closest thing we have to the Great American Novel, in my opinion.

The Pearl.

by Anonymousreply 4April 18, 2024 9:01 PM

Read “The Pearl” in 6th grade. That ending was tragic.

I thought we were going to read “The Black Pearl” with the giant monster manta ray but no…

I'm so sorry, OP! Do you need something? Chicken soup, maybe? I have the doctor on speed dial for you.

Feel better soon!

by Anonymousreply 6April 18, 2024 9:25 PM

Next, read "Grapes Of Wrath" and "The Log From The Sea Of Cortez".

by Anonymousreply 7April 18, 2024 9:40 PM

I love, love The Pearl.

by Anonymousreply 8April 18, 2024 9:46 PM

^^^^ Necklace

by Anonymousreply 9April 18, 2024 9:52 PM

Of Mice and Men

by Anonymousreply 10April 18, 2024 9:53 PM

Cannery Row sucks.

by Anonymousreply 11April 18, 2024 9:57 PM

Wasn’t the movie of “Cannery” a flop anyway?

by Anonymousreply 12April 18, 2024 10:32 PM

Dunno about a film, but a musical version by Rodgers and Hammerstein was a huge flop.

Travels with Charlie—we had to read it as part of effort to teach us prose writing…not so much that it was a great book.

by Anonymousreply 14April 19, 2024 12:39 AM

Op, when you do—I’ll be there.

I love Cannery Row. It’s a slice of life in early 20th century Cali like no other.

by Anonymousreply 16April 19, 2024 12:43 AM

There was no Cali in the 20th century…nor in this century

by Anonymousreply 17April 19, 2024 12:49 AM

To a God Unknown. Lovely and sad just the way I like ‘em!

by Anonymousreply 18April 19, 2024 1:05 AM

Of Mice and Men is perfect in its economy and efficiency.

by Anonymousreply 19April 19, 2024 1:09 AM

I concur on Mice and Men.

by Anonymousreply 20April 19, 2024 1:23 AM

Read "The Pearl."

Do it on a Tuesday. Puking for three days afterwards will leave you svelte for Friday night.

by Anonymousreply 21April 19, 2024 1:25 AM

His The Other Side of Midnight was pure trash.

by Anonymousreply 22April 19, 2024 1:28 AM

Holy shit, I forgot about The Pearl. I grew up about a mile from Cannery Row, so we read A LOT of Steinbeck (and Robert Louis Stevenson) in school. We started with The Red Pony in 5th grade and by the time we were in high school we had gone through most of his work and were reading things like The Moon is Down and The Log of the Sea of Cortez. Not a bad place to grow up at all.

by Anonymousreply 23April 19, 2024 1:29 AM

Oh you Monterey and Santa Cruz types…always showing off!

by Anonymousreply 24April 19, 2024 2:49 AM

Yup, Of Mice and Men is the obvious one.

by Anonymousreply 25April 19, 2024 3:02 AM

Well, we have a lot to show off!

by Anonymousreply 26April 19, 2024 5:38 AM

r26, well, then we hit puberty and moved to SF, leaving behind the red neck by-the-sea hell holes of Monterey/Watsonville/Santa Cruz in the rear view window. Oopsie. Just went from Steinbeck to Hitchcock in two seconds. Always wanted to be Doc Ricketts's boy toy, but ended up married to a man from Lynn, MA and living near Daly City. Let's call it "Of Mice, Rats, Cockroaches, and Men With Thick Boston Accents".

by Anonymousreply 27April 19, 2024 10:42 AM

from Lynn to Daly City…now that’s depressing

by Anonymousreply 28April 19, 2024 11:41 AM

Not a fan of Steinbeck's grander novels (too much ham-fisted pontificating) but I did surprisingly enjoy "The Moon is Down" when I was in high school.
