Columbia clears encampment of pro-Palestinian protesters

The New York Police Department began clearing an encampment of students protesting the war in Gaza at Columbia University on Thursday, a day after demonstrators had set it up.

Good for NYPD.

by Anonymousreply 3April 18, 2024 9:49 PM

I have mixed feelings about this. The university is right to clear public spaces if protests are breaking the rules and interfering with classes or keeping students from attending class.

But their timing could not be worse: since this happened right after yesterday's Congressional hearing, it's going to look like Columbia's president bowed to the Congressional nutters and is doing it to placate them.

This will likely spur bigger protests all over the country on multiple campuses from sympathetic students.

I have a soft spot for student protesters. They're still young enough to believe in the illusion of a better world. I like their inherent optimism.

In 1968 male students protesting the war could be drafted after graduating and forced to fight. Now the goals are more abstract. Even if the US stopped supporting Israel, Hamas and Israel would still be at war. And the effect on.the lives of most Columbia students is zero.

by Anonymousreply 22April 19, 2024 12:36 PM

Israel is quite used to being vilified by Arabs and their sympathizers. These protests are not going to accomplish a thing except give bored children something to make themselves feel important.and further isolate progressives from liberals.

Itโ€™s becoming clear that โ€œBrown-good/white-badโ€ is the governing โ€œideaโ€ of progressives and they are proving the weakness of their ideology.

by Anonymousreply 23April 19, 2024 12:43 PM

Considering that Israel was created by violence, land theft and dispossession, and is run using those game gestapo methods, itโ€™s completely unfair and unjustified that the Arabs โ€œand their sympathizersโ€ vilify them, amirite r23?

by Anonymousreply 24April 19, 2024 12:47 PM

These protestors are today's "Useful Idiots", providing unwitting support for Iran's proxy war on Israel via Hamas. Well I would hope it is unwitting, given that Iran is a theocratic dictatorship like something straight out of "The Handmaiden's Tale"

by Anonymousreply 25April 19, 2024 12:51 PM

All nations were created by violence, land theft and dispossession There are far worse things going on in the world than what is happening in Gaza. American progressivesโ€™ obsessive and exclusive focus on this conflict is due to its being shoehorned into an inapt colonialism paradigm and to antisemitism.

R29 you can add slavery to that little list.
Slavery in Iran and slavery in Jordan was abolished in 1929. In the Persian Gulf, slavery in Bahrain was first to be abolished in 1937, followed by slavery in Kuwait in 1949 and slavery in Qatar in 1952, while Saudi Arabia and Yemen abolished it in 1962, while Oman followed in 1970. There is no genocide. Thatโ€™s a loaded word and doesnโ€™t describe the situation. It turns people off to supporting the cause. But why be surprised when the whole protest is so poorly organized it accomplishes nothing.

R55 - there is no first amendment right to set up a protest camp on private property.

by Anonymousreply 59April 20, 2024 3:39 AM

r59 is absolutely correct.

Columbia is a private university, and they have posted their rules about protests. The protestors broke the university's rules by putting up the encampment. The university has been within its legal rights to clear out the protestors and to have them arrested.

by Anonymousreply 60April 20, 2024 3:43 AM

There are many Jews involved. A friend of mine is on the Columbia faculty and he showed me a message asking for someone from the faculty to support the Jewish students holding sabbath dinner in the โ€œliberation zone.โ€ Apparently they have no Jewish faculty mentor. You canโ€™t keep your progressive cred if you donโ€™t get with the program. At Harvard, some student groups having nothing to do with religion or politics require Jewish students to denounce Israel in order to participate.
It couldnโ€™t possibly be people motivated by political concerns.

Why do their political concerns involve defending terrorists? Who does that? Why aren't they angry at Hamas for attacking, raping, murdering, torturing and kidnapping civilians, and for refusing to release hostages, and for embedding themselves within civilian populations? These students seem to have no political concerns about Iran funding terrorist groups to attack Israel and trying to destabilize the Middle East.

I'll never understand anyone defending terrorism.

by Anonymousreply 72April 20, 2024 11:50 AM

Critical race theory is useful as an alternative perspectiveโ€”applied to ensure that the perspective of people who had been historically overlooked is not ignored. However, it does not work as the primary means of analysis. It creates more distortion when it is the only perspective considered. People who are angry or disappointed in life have latched onto the oppressor/oppressed dichotomy to justify their own failures and replace self-evaluation with anger. Add โ€œintersectionalityโ€ and you have all sorts of disappointed, unhappy people piling on.

When you try to shoe-horn a truly complicated conflict into a simple formula, you are going to wind up with some truly wrong takes, especially when labelling one side the oppressor means you pay no further attention to itโ€™s perspective and its arguments because doing so is deemed to be listening to evil. Itโ€™s lazy. Itโ€™s self-righteous. Itโ€™s distorting. But being angry and convinced youโ€™re fighting for justice is so much more satisfying than thinking.

by Anonymousreply 73April 20, 2024 12:01 PM

Left political economy filtered into many domains on campuses starting in the 70s. Investigating academic domains to identify and limit bias - class, race, gender, whatever - and therefore have broader knowledge - started off as a good gesture. 1970s-1990s.

One issue was the investigation of bias overtook other domain activities. 1990s to 2010s.

Bias itself turned into domains. 1990s - to present.

Post-colonial studies. Gender studies. Blah blah blah.

Many of the current professors are lesser minds - narrower minds than their professors. They have been trained in very narrow intellectual gamesmanship. So yes, they are indoctrinating yet another generation of students in "soft domains".

This is Columbia U. Remember that cunt Carry That Weight? Columbia REWARDED mattress girl WITH ACADEMIC CREDITS towards an Ivy League Degree for her histrionic bullshit bullying "art and politics" project. They did NOT shut it down.

A correction is in order. Please study REAL domains not masturbatory theories applied to real domains.

by Anonymousreply 74April 20, 2024 12:02 PM

The system is self-perpetuating if you think about it. DEI means a university hires faculty on the basis of identity rather than achievement. The idea behind doing so is to foster a diversity of viewpoints but it backfires when everyone has the same ideologyโ€”that Europeans, men, straights, โ€œcisโ€ people etc are โ€œprivilegedโ€ and should be torn down.

by Anonymousreply 77April 20, 2024 12:15 PM

One big difference between this generation of college protestors and the Vietnam generation is that the latter understood that certain acts of civil disobedience would lead to arrest. Indeed, that was often the goal. Conversely, aย lot of these students (if the footage is to be believed) are shocked when the cops showed up to take them to jail.

by Anonymousreply 78April 20, 2024 12:15 PM

In this case they did not think of themselves as engaged in โ€œcivil disobedience.โ€ They thought Columbia would let them take over a portion of the campus as their โ€œliberation zoneโ€ because โ€œfreedom of speech.โ€

by Anonymousreply 79April 20, 2024 12:19 PM

Thatโ€™s how stupid they are^

by Anonymousreply 80April 20, 2024 12:21 PM

Itโ€™s not really so stupid. The idea of breaking up the encampment is extremely controversial. Many in the faculty are shocked that freedom of speech does not trump all other considerations. There will be an enormous backlash against the administration. Especially since the new President is a Muslim woman who would gave been expected to side with the protesters.

by Anonymousreply 81April 20, 2024 12:28 PM
I have a friend who is tenured at Barnard and she told me today her Jewish students are absolutely terrified.

There is a certain irony in this. Other than possibly this one issue of the attack on Israel, those Barnard students almost certainly were already part of the woke university hive mind.

One hopes people are starting to think for themselves.

by Anonymousreply 82April 20, 2024 12:37 PM

What interests me about the exchange between r48 and r49 is that I've seen this elsewhere -- including in the comments section of a Washington Post article on the protests -- that is, the questioning of Jewish student motives. A WashPo commenter called the Jewish students "snowflakes." (Like r48, I have heard from Jewish colleagues about an ever-increasing feeling of dread as they watch the vitriol contained in some of these demonstrations. It's taking a toll on them.)

In a strange way, it feeds into anti-Semitic tropes about the Jews being both conniving and powerful, secretly plotting to shut down open debate by lying about how it impacts them.

I doubt the same people downplaying the fear and dismay of Jewish students had the same reaction to Black Americans who vocalized their fears in summer 2020 after George Floyd's murder. There's a huge double standard in all this.

by Anonymousreply 83April 20, 2024 12:40 PM

Thinking that your small group is entitled to a liberation zone in the middle of campus IS stupid.

by Anonymousreply 84April 20, 2024 12:41 PM

This โ€œone issueโ€ has been going on for a long time. The BDS movement was petering out, but has come roaring back.

by Anonymousreply 85April 20, 2024 12:42 PM

Of course thereโ€™s a double standard. Jews are classified as privileged and now as oppressors. Their feelings are suspect and their point of view is to be ignored. Only the feelings of the oppressed have validity.

If Jews say they feel oppressed, the reaction is โ€œgood!โ€

The prevailing view on campus reflected in student newspaper editorial

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 91April 20, 2024 12:51 PM

From the editorial:

Shafikโ€™s authorization of the New York Police Department to enter campus and forcibly remove peaceful protesters spotlights the emptiness and duplicity of the promises she made to Congress and the Columbia community. In her opening statement to the Committee, Shafik claimed that she has always โ€œheld on to four principlesโ€: prioritizing safety as being paramount, demonstrating โ€œcare and compassion equally to everyone,โ€ upholding freedom of nondiscriminatory and non-abusive speech, and affirming education as the ultimate answer to antisemitism and hate.

Much like the โ€œcommunity valuesโ€ that have been hypocritically implemented by administrators, not only have Shafikโ€™s principles been void from the very beginning of her administrationโ€™s response to events after October 7, 2023, but her response to the โ€œGaza Solidarity Encampmentโ€ only further cements her selectivity in enforcing her โ€œprinciples.โ€ When the NYPD Strategic Response Groupโ€”which the New York Civil Liberties Union has repeatedly characterized as โ€œnotoriously violentโ€โ€”is welcomed onto campus with open arms, it is Shafik who โ€œdisrupts campus lifeโ€ and infringes on her supposedly paramount principle of safety. How can students, especially those of color, feel safe when their campus is flooded by a police force infested with systemic racism and armed with riot gear? Clearly, โ€œcare and compassionโ€ are not being extended equally to everyone.

by Anonymousreply 92April 20, 2024 12:54 PM

T91 thatโ€™s the prevailing view of the editorial board, nothing more.

by Anonymousreply 93April 20, 2024 12:58 PM

by Anonymousreply 94April 20, 2024 12:59 PM

More:

โ€œ The administration has ignored our countless pleas to engage meaningfully with students, opting instead to continue down a path of surveillance, oppression, and authoritarian policies. Columbia should encourage free discourse on campus, not censor marginalized voices under the guise of โ€œsafetyโ€ and protectionโ€

The feelings of Jews on campus do not enter the discussion, except to be dismissed perfunctorily.

by Anonymousreply 95April 20, 2024 1:02 PM

I assure you the prevailing view of the editorial board is the prevailing view on campus.

by Anonymousreply 96April 20, 2024 1:03 PM

by Anonymousreply 103April 20, 2024 1:13 PM

Sorryโ€”a faculty vote of no confidence is a big dealโ€”especially in a new President. In any case, the subject under discussion is whether or not the editorial reflects the prevailing view on Columbiaโ€™s campus. It does.

by Anonymousreply 105April 20, 2024 1:18 PM

by Anonymousreply 106April 20, 2024 1:27 PM

I really have to wonder who would come here to argue that inviting the police onto a college campus to break up a student protest and arrest the students is going to be popular on any college campus, let alone in todayโ€™s environment.

What a bizarre argument.

Exactly R116. And show me the evidence of this โ€œprevailing viewโ€ on campus. A couple of dozen protestors isnโ€™t evidence of shit, nor is a vote by disgruntled and stupid faculty members.

by Anonymousreply 117April 20, 2024 2:03 PM

I have shown you evidence in the form of the student newspaper editorial and a faculty vote of no confidence in the administration. Itโ€™s not so much the protestorsโ€™ cause, but there is a โ€œsacredโ€ policy that NYPD should not set foot on the campus unless there is violence. Of course this dates from the anti-war protests of the 60s and 70s. Add a general โ€œfreedom of speechโ€ bias, and the faculty is roiled.

Columbia faculty must live in a bubble if they think the scenes coming out of that school look peaceful or non-violent. When you have Democratic congressmen coming to campus because Jews are not physically safe.

Claudine Gay had the support of faculty and we saw how that turned out.

They do R213. And thatโ€™s why a lot of gay people support the Palestinians and are critical of what the Israeli state is carrying out in Palestine. I think weโ€™ve reached 15,000 murdered children at this point. Thatโ€™s indefensible to anyone thatโ€™s not morally bankrupt.

Also, with any quick glance at statistics related to how different groups of people feel about the situation in Palestine, itโ€™s clear that being pro Israel is a white, older, conservative, straight man position. Gays are self aware enough to know that siding with those sorts is not the best POA. Thatโ€™s why itโ€™s very clear that these threads are full to the fucking brim of trolls. For the second time, R271, see R216.

This organizers of the protest have put out a statement disavowing the behavior of those in their midst showing such blatant hostility, but when students are told to stay home rather than attend class โ€“ as all Columbia students have been told today โ€“ you know there are more than just a few bad actors in the protesting group.

by Anonymousreply 280April 22, 2024 10:59 AM

Thanks R279. That's repulsive. To be bluntly honest - I read some of the posts in this thread and thought - they're conflating protestors not wanting further death and destruction of Palestinian civilians as support for Hamas - which is most definitely isn't. That's why I asked where the direct support was.

But a lot of what's being said in this thread is actually real. How foul. They should be rounded up, exposed online on a permanent page of Columbia's website and then expelled from the school. I can't imagine what kind of person you would have to be to wish death on a group of people. That's definitely anti-Semitism - a word which gets thrown around too often at the moment.

I can 100% understand peaceful protest in support of a ceasefire to halt the carnage of the Palestinian people being delivered in Gaza by the IDF/Israeli government - but not anti-Semitism and hatred for a group of people. I will never understand that. Disgusting.

R280 - these are my first posts in the thread at R271 onwards and nobody has mentioned R216 a first time. Anyway - even if it's just a handful of the Columbia students - the other protestors in the crowd should have dealt with them. It now reflects on all of them. I would have dealt with/challenged those people had I been there in the crowd.

You'd think they would be angry at Hamas for starting a war, for not agreeing to a ceasefire, for violating the ceasefire that existed before October 7th, for the horrific attack itself, which included mass murder, rapes, setting people on fire, torture...and for not releasing all the hostages, for embedding themselves into the civilian population, and for continuing to fire missiles into Israel. A Jewish Yale University student journalist reporting on an anti-Israeli protest at the Ivy League school Saturday night was stabbed in the eye with a Palestinian flag, while her assailant has gone unpunished.

Sahar Tartak, editor-in-chief of the Yale Free Press, was covering the protest โ€” which saw hundreds of students camping on the campus in support of Palestinians โ€” when she was suddenly surrounded by demonstrators.

Tartak said she and a friend were singled out for wearing Hasidic Jewish attire as the crowd formed a blockade around them to interfere with their filming.

โ€œThis video clip is the announcement of a collective movement aimed at disrupting the public order in Europe, USA, Australia and Asia all under the pretext of supporting Palestinians. This is a political movement intended to cause as much chaos and instability as possible, which are the exact goals of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The regime of the Islamic Republic has on multiple occasions, stated clearly that their goal is to destroy the modern society and build a global Islamic state.โ€

Beheshti further states that the rallies in Western countries are organized โ€œdirectly in line with the mission of the Islamic Republicโ€ and ordered by the IRGC.

In an interview with Iran International earlier Monday, Beheshti emphasized that the IRGC uses brainwashing tactics targeting youth in Western countries to cause chaos with such rallies being an example of these tactics.

Less than a month after the October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas, Iranโ€™s ruler Ali Khamenei called for the blockade of oil and food exports to Israel and urged Muslim states to โ€œnot cooperate economically with the Zionist regime.โ€

The April 15 march organizers remain mostly anonymous. However, the video is heavily promoted by far-left groups, including Antifa, on social media. Uploaded to YouTube four days ago by A15 Economic Blockade, it directs viewers to their website, featuring a solidarity agreement among members to resist media, political, police, and โ€œZionist pressuresโ€. The site emphasizes avoiding police communication or coordination regarding actions or fellow organizers.

It is quite easy to believe that in supporting these protests you are only supporting the moderate aspects of what it means to be โ€œPro-Palestinian.โ€ You may choose to believe you are only supporting a call for a shift in Israeli tactics, or a cease fire that will endure.

But the heart of the โ€œPro-Palestinianโ€ position to the Palestinians themselves is not about finding ways to live in peace with the Jews. It is about removing the Jews from Israel โ€œby any means necessary.โ€

That is the Palestinian cause and anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional.

No โ€œPalestinianโ€ leader has ever taken a concrete step toward peaceful coexistence with Israel because if they did they would be killed.

While there are many Palestinian Arabs who would welcome peaceful co-existence and accommodation, they are not represented by the Palestinian movement. The Palestinian movement is not about finding a road to peace. It is about eliminating Israel

To them, this is a zero sum game.

But yesโ€”they are VERY skilled at propaganda and very disciplined at Columbia where the students on campus provide the โ€œsoft messageโ€ and their colleagues outside the gates use rhetoric that would not be allowed on campus.

The post above r308 indicates that some of the copycat demonstrations popping up lack that discipline.

by Anonymousreply 330April 22, 2024 6:05 PM

Many of the protesters are well-intentioned. Others are not. The labeling of the Israelis as โ€œcolonizersโ€ gives cover to the malign agenda. When pressed on โ€œwhat should happen to the Jews?โ€ The response is often โ€œthey should go back to where they came fromโ€ as if that were a real option. Of course it is not a real option, but it leaves unspoken the actual answer.

"Another feature of neo-Eurasianism is the choice of Islamic countries (especially mainland Iran) as an important strategic ally. The idea of a continental RussianIslamic alliance underlies the anti-Atlantic strategy on the southwestern coast of the Eurasian continent. At the doctrinal level, this alliance is based on the traditional character of the Russian and Islamic civilizations, which unites them in opposition to the anti-traditional, secular-pragmatic West."

Israel is like a trigger word for some people.. After years of demonization, merely mentioning Israel ignites a powerful hatred in some people, which overcomes any other emotion they may have. Unfortunately, this is how people operate, and various actors exploit and build upon this sentiment.
When pressed on โ€œwhat should happen to the Jews?โ€ The response is often โ€œthey should go back to where they came fromโ€ as if that were a real option. Of course it is not a real option, but it leaves unspoken the actual answer.

Well, first of all the majority of Israeli Jews are from the Middle East so โ€œback to where they came fromโ€ makes no sense. The rest are the diaspora, but not the majority. Besides of those that came from Europe, their off-spring were born in Israel. 20% of the Israeli population are Arab Muslims who have the same rights as Jewish citizens and have positions in government. There is a percentage of Christians, but I donโ€™t know what it is.

Palestinians object to a Jewish state because of their religious ideology which is intolerant of Jews and other religions. At one time the Middle East was quite culturally diverse with many ethnicities. It was the colonization by the Arabs that wiped that out. Israelis do not need permission to live in Israel. It is literally their homeland and the place of their ethno-genesis. It is the location of their holiest sites, one which Palestinians built a mosque on top of as a โ€˜fuck youโ€™ to the Jews.

Also, at the time the UN officially โ€œgaveโ€ Israel to the Jews, was after the British washed their hands of the region for which they had the mandate after WWI. Naturally, the Palestinians rejected all proposed land division by the UN but too fucking bad. The land of an Israel belongs to the people who are living there.

by Anonymousreply 344April 22, 2024 6:40 PM

R343 They aren't "pro-Arab" protests. People are conflating Arabs with the Islamic Republic. Many of the Gulf countries (i.e. the Arabs) are seeking (or were, before Iran/Hamas interfered) seeking normalization with Israel.
The craziest thing are the liberal Jews who get behind this shit because theyโ€™re scared of being canceled.

That may motivate some of them. Some are opposed to the existence of Israel. Others may just disagree with Israeli policies and have deluded themselves into thinking they should join the cause just as they might join an anti-Netanyahu march in Israel. They tell themselves they have some common cause with those who fully endorse what Hamas stands for, and should protest just for the part they agree with. I think thatโ€™s delusional.

by Anonymousreply 353April 22, 2024 7:17 PM

R351 It's not the first time in history it's happened and it won't be the last. I considered myself a "Progressive" Jew my whole life until Oct. 7th happened and was then told I couldn't call myself a progressive anymore unless I took a firm stance against Israel. So I said, fuck it, I guess that means I'm a Moderate Democrat now. I spent most of my life having to be the "right" kind of progressive Jew (which mostly meant never calling myself a Zionist) just because I was more aligned with the economic principles of Democratic Socialism than Neoliberalism. I draw the line at colluding with terrorist organizations and screeching "GO BACK TO POLAND!" at other Jews.

by Anonymousreply 354April 22, 2024 7:18 PM

I watched it happened live on TikTok R342. Out of nowhere came this barrage of anti Israel propaganda, and then dozens of creators I followed were suddenly spouting Palestinian talking points. It took about two weeks to completely change my algorithm, and despite reporting and disliking all of it, I couldnโ€™t escape it. It was insane. I had been on the app since the beginning of the pandemic, about two years, and knew things could turn quickly, but I was generally politically aligned with those I watched. This felt like it came out of nowhere, and these 25 year olds suddenly knew alllll the history of the Middle East and it was all the Jews fault. People I watched who had senses of humor and were reasonable and intelligent were suddenly foaming at the mouth about Israel. It was like watching zombies infect each other in real time. I couldnโ€™t believe what I was seeing.

After about a month of arguing and fighting in the comments, I gave up and deleted the app. It really turned me off of Gen Z and younger millennials (whom I had gained some real hope from while I was on the app) and TikTok.

TikTok absolutely needs to be banned, but not for the reason Congress is banning it. It needs to be banned because it is one of the sharpest and fastest tools of indoctrination Iโ€™ve ever seen, short of mind control. Itโ€™s extremely dangerous, and weโ€™re now watching the violent physical demonstration of TikTokโ€™s indoctrination play out at college campuses.

by Anonymousreply 355April 22, 2024 7:21 PM

Iโ€™m exactly where youโ€™re at R354.

by Anonymousreply 356April 22, 2024 7:25 PM

Similar experience. I have always called myself a progressive. Thatโ€™s what those surveys designed to assess your political tribe always told me I was on the basis of my economic and social policy preferences . But I was shocked by the progressive reaction to Oct 7. I had not realized the extent to which leftist analysis had been captured by the critical race theory paradigm of privilege/oppression and the demands that anyone identifying as oppressed must stand with anyone else claiming to be oppressed.

Of course, Jews represent a challenge to the paradigm in that we have clearly been historically oppressed, but we have generally succeeded in spite of it. That upsets the whole notion that lack of success is the result of oppression. To deal with the disconnect, Jews are classified as โ€œprivilegedโ€ despite history, and are therefore the oppressors in their conflict with the Arabs which cannot be looked at in any framework other than the framework advanced by the Palestinians, because you donโ€™t have to listen to oppressors, etc etc.

Iโ€™m out.

by Anonymousreply 357April 22, 2024 7:33 PM

by Anonymousreply 396April 23, 2024 2:38 AM

The big issue when I was at UT Austin was apartheid- there was a replica shanty on campus for years. No, it didnโ€™t affect us personally, but the university had investments in SA (as did many universities and corporations) that were considered blood money so thousands protested, hundreds were arrested, and UT divested in 1986 (but unfortunately still had dirty money elsewhere a recently as 2011).

by Anonymousreply 404April 23, 2024 3:09 AM
I cannot believe this is happening. And in NY.

Is this your first day in NY? Or do you have memory problems?

During Black Lives Matter marches, people went through and smashed up storefronts. Soho was a mess of broken glass. Remember black people followed white people around and made their lives miserable like staring at them in restaurants. Thatโ€™s when store looting started and why everything is locked up now.

Back when Bloomberg was mayor the Puerto Rican parade one year did a lot of vandalism. The next year, stores along the parade route boarded up their stores. Bloomberg had to threaten store owners to not do that.

I could go on but I wonโ€™t. The point is that NYC has never been the liberal wet dream of peace, love and harmony. Thereโ€™s always been tension between groups.

What exactly do they think theyโ€™re protesting? US policy will not be moved by Hitler Youth camping out in tents at Columbia or NYU. I can guarantee you that Netanyahu doesnโ€™t give a single shit about them either and will. chnage nothing about Israelโ€™s campaign. They are having zero effect in the world. If they continue this dangerous behavior, American opinion will quickly turn on them. Iโ€™m not convinced they even KNOW what theyโ€™re protesting about. They are fools.

I wish we had the laws Germany has concerning Nazis and Jewish hate. All of these morons would be arrested and facing jail sentences.

by Anonymousreply 417April 23, 2024 12:04 PM

If they are protesting for Columbia to divest (endowment wealth) from Israeli corporations - I can agree it's a cogent argument. I don't necessarily agree but it's a legitimate protest by students of their own university.

by Anonymousreply 420April 23, 2024 1:14 PM

by Anonymousreply 421April 23, 2024 1:24 PM

Yes, we see how well the rules are enforced at Columbia.

by Anonymousreply 439April 23, 2024 4:22 PM

Colleges and universities do not want to expel multiple paying students--they lose important revenue when they do, and will not get it easily replaced.

If 133 students at NYU were suddenly expelled for protesting, the school would have problems continuing operations for years to come.

Expulsion is done only as a last resort and it is almost never done en masse. To do so would hurt the school as badly as the protestors.

by Anonymousreply 440April 23, 2024 4:23 PM

"The UN human rights chief also deplored as "beyond warfare" a series of Israeli strikes on the southern city of Rafah in the past few days, which he said had killed mostly women and children.

The strikes included one on Saturday night, after which a premature baby was delivered from the womb of her pregnant mother, who was killed along with her husband and other daughter."

Let me also remind you that a large group of those protesting ARE Jewish, so if you do claim to have Jewish people's interests at heart you should also be supporting the student's right to protest.

by Anonymousreply 463April 23, 2024 8:14 PM

R462 First of all, these casualty figures have exclusively been reported by Hamas itself, but even if they are remotely true (which, again, reported by Hamas), they are counting anyone under the age of 18 as a child in order to create the visual of 15,000 innocent toddlers lying in a heap. What's far more likely is that the majority that have been killed are actual Hamas militants, considering the majority of the fighters they shove to the front of the line are teenagers. Hamas has been including the numbers of Hamas terrorists, militants, and operatives in their casualty figures right alongside civilians in order to greatly inflate the numbers.

"Hamas fighters are largely recruited from unemployed minors, aged under 18. About 50,000 Gazan youths under 18 registered for "security" training. Recruitment is likely driven by the highest unemployment in the world, where 45% of Gazans are unemployed. Al-Qassam spokesman Abu Obaida stated in a public speech in 2023 during the Gazaโ€“Israel conflict that 85% of their recruits are orphans desiring revenge whose parents were killed by the Israeli Defense Forces."

NEW YORK, NY โ€” As pro-Palestine groups continued to gather on campus following the establishment of the Gaza Solidarity Encampment, Columbia University protestors clarified that they only want "Death to America" after America is done paying their student loans for them.

"Death to Americaโ€ฆ in like, 3 or 4 years when I graduate!" shouted one student protestor. "America truly is the โ€˜Great Satan' that ravages and oppresses other countries and deserves to be wiped off the face of the earthโ€ฆas soon as the American taxpayers finish paying off our tuition loans!

"But as soon as that's done, then, yeah, totally, death to America!"

The mob of angry students occupying the Gaza Solidarity Encampment agreed that this was an entirely reasonable requirement. "America owes us. You, know, for being all evil and horrible and stuff," said an apparently well-educated student at the university. "We demand loan forgiveness from America. Then it can die as soon as that's done."

As part of this agreement, Columbia students vowed to maintain barely passing grades in all of their liberal arts classes for the duration of time it takes taxpayers to cover their debt.

At publishing time, the Columbia protestors had also called for the death of Elon Musk, but only after they get a Tesla.

What the fuck is a Muslim woman doing as the head of Columbia? Why this love of Islam? It is a scourge. A destructive cult, a destructive political ideology. How fucking stupid are people? Like putting Claudine Gay as the head of Harvard simply because a very stupid DEI billionairess put her there. And Gay who should not be at Harvard at all still gets her close to million $ salary. 'I was fired because I was black!' You were hired because you were black by a stupid woman. All the worst tropes about women as dimwits and the failure of feminism are coming true.

Whether anyone would want it or not is besides the point. The point is: no one can be disallowed a job as the president of Columbia University because of their religious beliefs. It would be federally legally actionable to deny them a job on that basis.

Protections not to discriminate against religion in hiring in higher education actually wholly pre-date DEI. Those have been in place for decades and decades,

If it were possible to discriminate based on religion in hiring, then the religious right [bold]absolutely[/bold] would immediately go after people who are Jewish or atheistic or agnostic--not just the Muslims.

Palestinian Jews are middle-eastern ethnicity as well. ("Palestian Jews" refers to Jews who lived in Palestine before the founding of Israel). Furthermore, many Israeli Jews are descended from immigrants from all over the Middle East and North Africa who were KICKED OUT OF THEIR countries after centuries of co-habitation with muslims. Let me tell ya a little story bout a man name Rudd.

Mark Rudd headed up Columbia universityโ€™s chapter of SDS in the1960s, leading sit-ins, riots and the occupation of the library and administrative building at the school. Rudd called for violent confrontation and hardline Communist sentiments.

Rudd and other former RYM members ultimately formed Weatherman, a self-proclaimed "organization of communist women and men." The new organization was intent on overthrowing the government through violent actions. Spreading communism was a priority for the members of Weather, as when Rudd told other members of SDS, " Don't be timid about telling people we're Communist. Don't deny it, be proud of it."

Rudd and other members of Weatherman participated in an SDS National Action on October 8โ€“11, 1969, an event which became known as the Days of Rage

Rudd, along with other prominent members of Weather, went underground in March 1970 following the Greenwich Village townhouse explosion, an incident in which three members of the organization died when an explosive device, intended for a servicemen's ball, detonated prematurely.

For seven years Rudd lived underground. On September 14, 1977, Rudd turned himself in to authorities, tired of life as a fugitive. He had been living and working under an assumed name just a few miles from the Columbia campus in Brooklyn and was increasingly frustrated over his lifestyle which included his inability to see his family as well as working in manual labor jobs beneath his education

He received a small fine and ultimately spent less than one year in jail for all his crimes.

Gee, why was Rudd allowed to behave like this and get a slap on the risk?

I wonder whyโ€ฆโ€ฆ

ARCATA, Calif. โ€” Cal Poly Humboldt announced on Friday that its campus will remain closed through the rest of the semester due to the ongoing protests and occupation of Siemens Hall and Nelson Hall East.

The semester was set to end on May 10.

The university said remote instruction and work will continue until that time.

On Monday, several dozen demonstrators took over Siemens Hall, one of the main buildings on campus. Another group of protesters was outside the building.

University officials said the ongoing occupation of the two buildings has caused an "ongoing inability to open other campus facilities." They said vandalism and theft have continued across campus.

I'm surprised no one has moved to sue these colleges. People pay about $75,000 just for tuition at an Ivy, and a big part of the benefit is who you meet and work with. Zoom classes eliminate all the social benefits of Ivy attendence.

The school absolutely has the ability to clear these protestors. It's private property. By leaving these dangerous encampments, they are depriving paying students of what they paid for.

I think the students forced to do remote classes have a case. Any lawyers here care to opine?
