This Just In: UK Ban on Smoking

Oh, crikey! A nicotine-free British population?

[quote] MPs have voted to back the government's plans to create a "smoke-free generation", and reduce the number of smoking-related deaths.

[quote] It means that people born in or after 2009 will never be able to legally buy cigarettes, leading to an effective ban.

Source in the next link because I can’t keep up with Muriel’s hit list.

by Anonymousreply 70April 27, 2024 7:46 PM

So what will untalented stage, tv and movie directors do when they can’t think of any business for their actors besides smoking?

Will movies with smoking become like porn?

The agenda against smoking has to do more with the intellectual, mood and weight loss benefits of it than alleged deaths. These same people encourage obesity and fast food and environmental chemicals. Someone who has a cigarette in their house or backyard is no one’s business. Smokers are no longer everywhere, in fact they hide under a rock to enjoy one.

by Anonymousreply 2April 18, 2024 6:03 PM

What will Princess Kate do to pass her days?

by Anonymousreply 3April 18, 2024 6:06 PM

[quote]The agenda against smoking has to do more with the intellectual, mood and weight loss benefits of it than alleged deaths.

No. Smoking is one of the leading causes of lung cancer. Second-hand smoking also causes needless damage. Banning it is nothing but good news for the society.

by Anonymousreply 4April 18, 2024 6:07 PM

It's really staggering how much smoking has changed since the blanket bans on indoor smoking started in the 90's. They're toxic little fuckers, those ciggies. So many ailments caused by that one source.

by Anonymousreply 5April 18, 2024 6:07 PM

R4 R5 smokers do not bother you at all, and you never even encounter them anymore. I’m sure you have no issue with fast food and alcohol and all the problems that it causes health wise. Let’s not forget all the mental illness and obesity caused by smoking copious amounts of pot. People who rail against cigarettes are usually big losers.

by Anonymousreply 6April 18, 2024 6:11 PM

This is Orwellian bullshit. This is what happens when Fraus take over the world, Some weird delusion that everyone should live forever.

by Anonymousreply 7April 18, 2024 6:12 PM

[quote] So what will untalented stage, tv and movie directors do when they can’t think of any business for their actors besides smoking?

We already solved this! Substitute it with drinking!

by Anonymousreply 8April 18, 2024 6:17 PM

Nice projection there, R5. Are you denying that ciggies are toxic little fuckers? I said that and observed how much things have changed. You added everything else.

by Anonymousreply 9April 18, 2024 6:35 PM

Brits have always been dependent upon the state, thus they live under a Nanny State which makes all their decisions.

by Anonymousreply 10April 18, 2024 6:38 PM

[quote] Are you denying that ciggies are toxic little fuckers?

Ciggies? Are you a three-year-old? Speak like an adult.

by Anonymousreply 11April 18, 2024 6:39 PM

Fuck off, R11. Your posting history is a sewer, by the way.

by Anonymousreply 12April 18, 2024 6:42 PM

And to think I spent my life fighting on behalf of such wussies.

R2

It’s complete and total bullshit to say that the people who are pushing a smoking ban are the same people pushing for fast food and pro environmental chemicals. That makes you sound like a fucking QAnon looney making up nonsense..

And there is only one reason smokers are hiding under a rock in their own back yard today , the govt and society has hounded and enforced them into hiding.

There are few groups more hated than cigarettes smokers.

But in the US no one in the federal govt had ever suggested a ban. The PHS has always been anti ban. Mostly as unworkable or unneeded.

Time will tell how this UK ban goes. How will smokers adjust? No one gives a fuck.

by Anonymousreply 14April 18, 2024 6:45 PM

Kind of sad. What's a pale, skinny, horse-hung scally supposed to do after buggery? Lord knows nobody wants to listen to him. Let him have a smoke then be on his way.

by Anonymousreply 15April 18, 2024 6:46 PM

So you don’t live in the US where govts all the past govts have managed to govern just about every part of your life, and everything you do during a normal year.

From what you eat and drink, the type of porn you can watch, your working conditions, the clothes you wear, the age of those you can fuck, the taxes you pay, the safety equipment in the cars you buy, the speed limit you can drive, and just about everything else in your life.

People are not really cowboys riding the west anymore just as they never were cowboys to begin with..

by Anonymousreply 18April 18, 2024 7:15 PM

Why can’t we just make them 30 dollars a pack?

by Anonymousreply 19April 18, 2024 7:15 PM

Won’t people just take Eurostar over to Paris and buy them? Or ask friends to buy up cartons while on holiday?

by Anonymousreply 20April 18, 2024 7:19 PM

Who wants to invest in my new tobacco smuggling business? I hear there are some isolated coves in Cornwall waiting to be used.

by Anonymousreply 21April 18, 2024 7:20 PM

R19

It’s getting close to that now.

Right at $30 a 20 pack in Australia. And right at $1.27 a 20 pack in Vietnam, the cheapest in the world.

Hardcore NVA

It was 25 cents a pack of 20 no one ever asked for an ID when I first started.

by Anonymousreply 22April 18, 2024 7:22 PM

"This is Orwellian bullshit. This is what happens when Fraus take over the world, Some weird delusion that everyone should live forever."

You don't know what Orwellian means.

And it seems weird that the US conservatives who complain about stuff like this want to ban porn, library books, and TikTok. So, if we're having a conversation about banning things we don't like....

by Anonymousreply 23April 18, 2024 7:23 PM

It’s Communist bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 24April 18, 2024 7:26 PM

I don't care if people smoke.

by Anonymousreply 25April 18, 2024 7:27 PM

r24 doesn't know what "communist" means

by Anonymousreply 26April 18, 2024 7:29 PM

I knew they'd go after the fags..

by Anonymousreply 27April 18, 2024 7:31 PM

The problem with smoking, unlike eating and drinking (unless someone drives drunk) is that it can negatively affect others in the same air space, without permission. Second hand smoke is a real problem. Banning it in public areas, both indoors and out, makes sense.

What people do in the privacy of their own homes is their business.

by Anonymousreply 28April 18, 2024 7:31 PM

R28

Not if they have small children with developing lungs in that home. Then it’s not their private business. Those are the kids most at risk from second hand smoke those that live in a house with adult smokers..

Child abuse is a crime.

by Anonymousreply 29April 18, 2024 7:35 PM

R22 They’re 9 dollars by me and I’ve seen cheap ones closer to 5 or 6.

by Anonymousreply 30April 18, 2024 7:35 PM

I remember when they gave out free small packs on the airplane to anyone that wanted a pack. And you could light up as soon as the plane took off.

It’s no surprise that flight attendants lead the charge for non smoking on airplanes.

by Anonymousreply 31April 18, 2024 7:38 PM

[quote] The problem with smoking, unlike eating and drinking (unless someone drives drunk) is that it can negatively affect others in the same air space, without permission. Second hand smoke is a real problem. Banning it in public areas, both indoors and out, makes sense.

Second hand outdoors smoke from a tiny little cigarette? You go and do a little bit of research on that and let me know what you turn up.

If you were being proportional about outdoor particles you’d be going after diesel trucks btw, and any freeway or highway that encourages the use of diesel engines. Proportionality is what is always important in these dealings. Banning smoking indoors, great! Outdoors, not so much, except as a fire hazard.

by Anonymousreply 32April 18, 2024 7:44 PM

Wouldn't it be nice if they were going to ban something that they came up with alternatives first. I quit smoking 17 years ago and still want a cigarette at least 5x's a day. It was the only think I had to use for stress. I have always lives with excessive stress which all the alternatives do not help. If they weren't so expensive I would have gone back to it numerous times. I think most people use it for stress. Too bad they haven't tried to find an alternative.

by Anonymousreply 33April 18, 2024 7:52 PM

R33

I think you will find that billions of dollars are spent on reducing stress and ways to reduce stress.

by Anonymousreply 34April 18, 2024 7:58 PM

Can't they just development tobacco that is more quickly fatal?

Win-Win for all of us!

by Anonymousreply 35April 18, 2024 8:01 PM

Not really. The research on that has been dubious at best. This is a slippery slope.

by Anonymousreply 38April 18, 2024 8:04 PM

I think cigarettes will eventually go away altogether in future generations

by Anonymousreply 39April 18, 2024 8:07 PM

[quote] The government has already announced plans to ban disposable vapes in England as soon as April 2025, and hopes to extend this ban across the UK as well.

[quote] The contents, flavours and packaging of nicotine vapes will also be restricted in order to make them less attractive to children. A new tax on vaping will be introduced from October 2026.

by Anonymousreply 49April 18, 2024 11:25 PM

They banned smoking on the acreage I work. But the smokers found all the nooks and crannies where the cameras can't see- and those are littered with butts.

by Anonymousreply 50April 18, 2024 11:30 PM

I hope R35 develops a slow moving and painful cancer. 🔮

by Anonymousreply 51April 18, 2024 11:34 PM

[quote]But the smokers found all the nooks and crannies where the cameras can't see- and those are littered with butts.

Odd, smokers are usually so conscientious about their impact on the people and environment around them.

R52 please fuck off and get back to posting your inane comments from the smartphone made by modern day child slave labor and eating your fast food that pollutes the environment & guarantees the workers need welfare to survive. What’s that knock at the door? It’s probably your Amazon package…

Long live menthols! 🇺🇸

by Anonymousreply 55April 26, 2024 8:13 PM

They should just make them more expensive. People do things that are bad for their health, all the time. I don't think that hard bans have any good influence there. It just creates a crime that now has to be prosecuted.

by Anonymousreply 56April 26, 2024 9:41 PM

R56, they’re expensive enough.

by Anonymousreply 57April 26, 2024 10:07 PM

R56

You are correct and higher price is one of the reasons so many addicts have quit smoking. And most have quit according to the drop in % of smokers in the US anyway

25 cents a pack when I started

$10 a pack today.

The US is not considering a ban on sales for regular cigs. Menthol ban was on now off at least until after the election,

by Anonymousreply 58April 27, 2024 9:06 AM

I was just in London last week and I did notice much more smoking in public than we are used to in the states. What’s more noticeable from my last visit is the increase in vaping. A lot of young people (mostly males) have taken it up.

They still can’t compare with Italians, they’re hardcore.

by Anonymousreply 59April 27, 2024 10:45 AM

Outdoor smoking goes up as indoor smoking goes down. If you can no longer smoke in your apt or hotel room you will go outside to smoke.

Even where smoking rates have dropped considerably outdoor smoking may rise.

by Anonymousreply 60April 27, 2024 11:00 AM

[quote] The Biden administration has once again pushed back its plans to ban menthol cigarettes amid pressure from critics, including some civil rights leaders, who said it would unfairly target Black smokers.

Let them all die of cancer. Such moral integrity. That's our Joe.

by Anonymousreply 61April 27, 2024 6:06 PM

R61

Only an idiot would support doing that ban right before the election. Do you support doing that ban right before an election?

by Anonymousreply 62April 27, 2024 6:16 PM

I like how there's one person in this thread (WWing themselves) trying desperately to refute over 60 years of research and knowledge that smoking is bad for you! The 1962 RCP report on the harmful effects of tobacco was pretty conclusive, only a desperate tobacco company shill like R2 (and all the other posts) would suggest otherwise!

by Anonymousreply 64April 27, 2024 6:28 PM

Professionals who work supporting tobacco interests don’t hang out plying their trade on DL. That person you are referencing is just a garden variety addict.

And the one thing addicts, drugs, sex, or booze addicts have in common is down playing their risks and defending their high risk behavior. And making fun of the prudes .

Tobacco addicts, high risk sex addicts, the chronic drunks and drinkers it’s all pretty much the same.

by Anonymousreply 65April 27, 2024 6:31 PM

R36, how sophisticated you are!

And a liar, too!

by Anonymousreply 66April 27, 2024 7:05 PM

This makes me recall a comment I read once about Daniel Radcliffe smoking so much that even his fellow Harry Potter castmates were concerned.

by Anonymousreply 67April 27, 2024 7:10 PM

[quote]Under the new law, each year the legal age for cigarette sales - currently 18 - will increase by one year. It means that people born in or after 2009 will never be able to legally buy cigarettes. The law will not affect those who are already allowed to buy cigarettes.

Did none of you read this part?

by Anonymousreply 68April 27, 2024 7:31 PM
