American bread is sweet, R17. Australian bread is savoury-to-salty. That's one reason why y'all can't come to terms with Vegemite. It's putrid on bread with sugar in it.

I don't know how it can take the lass at R13's link four minutes to put sprinkles on buttered bread, but at least she does do it correctly: you put the sprinkles in a dish and put the buttered side of the bread on top of them. Sprinkling them onto the bread is the fairy bread equivalent of draining your pasta.

Ooh, R44, maybe it's the kind of bread I love, where you cut it very thin, very lightly butter and bake it till it's toasted. If you put it in muffin or patty tins first, it will come out in a shape you can put other hors d'oeuvres into.

IIRC when we discussed the fairy toast on one of the "Mamie Eisenhower's low hangers" threads, we only came across the sprinkled toast version when trying to figure out what it was. What r48 says makes sense, but this was Mamie who decorated the presidential bedroom in girly pink...

Surprised Dutch people feed this to their kids in the morning as we are always inundated with stories about how much more healthy their diets are.

Outside of Italy and Spain and parts of France, I have never been overmuch impressed by the average European diet.

Portion sizes are smaller, and there are more local recipes. But low salt? No fat? no meat? Have fun.

Yep, decades ago backpacking in Europe, staying in hostels, came down to breakfast first time in Holland and the table was set with a loaf of sliced white bread, a slab of butter, and a bowl of chocolate sprinkles and a spoon. Horrified, and then after the first slice, absolutely hooked. Real chocolate sprinkles by the way.

Dessert topping and butter on toast? How trashy. My father used a cinnamon/sugar mix. And we didn't need a fancy name to make ourselves feel better about eating it.

It could be fun to use the butter & sprinkles in a brioche version of this fairy bread, though. I could see that working out nicely.

Also, I have lived in Western Europe all my life, and I have NEVER seen anyone eat this perpetration. Where in Europe is this a common snack? Not even the English have enough bad culinary taste to prepare such a hideous aberration.

To be fair to Australians, fairy bread was only ever found at children's parties. I don't go to many of those but I imagine even there it is frowned upon nowadays. The poor little things probably have to eat kale. It is also a legacy from Australia's monocultural days: ie when we ate food we'd inherited from England (eek).

Things have changed a whole lot since the first Italians and Greeks to come here looked in dismay at the food we ate and said, "We're going to starve!"

We never ate white bread at home so it just never presented to me as exciting as party foods like pies, cupcakes, etc. The one time I was forced to try it, I didn't like it.

So this is why Aussies are so overweight. They are surrounded by so many beautiful beaches. Why do they sit around eating garbage?

Cinnamon toast was the go-to snack for kids when I was growing up. It was fast, easy and cheap to make. We washed it all down with Kool-Aid. Yet we were somehow healthier and better-adjusted than kids today.

Do kids today still make cinnamon toast? They probably eat hummus on artisanal crackers.

We only had one piece of cinnamon toast for breakfast and a cup of tea with milk and sugar. Very sugary but we were never overweight be cause it was only one piece of toast.

I still crack up at TV sitcom breakfasts. Pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausages, toast, a big glass pitcher of orange juice and a box of cereal.

One character says “I don’t have time for breakfast” and runs out the door.

Another grabs a piece of toast, waves and leaves.

Nobody touches the eggs, pancakes or sausages.

A small shopping centre near to my parents (two major supermarkets, no department stores) has at least a dozen places to buy crappy food: McDonald's, Hungry Jack's (Burger King), KFC and two other chicken places, Domino's...if you're in a hurry and want something healthier, there's options at the Japanese, Lebanese and Subway. However, most people make the fattiest choices without vegetables even there. The meats, cheeses and breads look horrifying at Subway.

Perth is really spread out and a lot of people drive everywhere. The average New Yorker would be a lot thinner and fitter than the average Perth resident is my guess. In summer, it is so hot that a lot of people avoid going outside. Unless you're a seasoned labourer or conditioned to be active when the weather is hottest, most outdoor activities occur at the beginning or end of the day. Swimming and surfing are the big exceptions.

R124 I was in Perth just a few weeks ago! Partner has relatives there. I loved it, nice and dry, and best cycle paths of any city I've been in, I did quite a bit of cycling there.

You're right about all the fast food places though. And all the fatarses. Really no excuse with the fantastic climate, great swimming and its almost as flat as Amsterdam so no good reason you cant cycle everywhere
