The TV movie in two parts, with Philip Casnoff as Sinatra was excellent. Marcia Gay Harden played Ava and she was damned good. Olympia Dukakis was Dolly Sinatra.

I liked The Aviator and thought DiCaprio was better than good as Howard Hughes. In fact, all of the supporting male actors did stellar work. The problem was casting Blanchett as Hepburn and Kate Beckinsale as Ava Gardner. Beckinsale’s performance was unremarkable and easy to forget. A blessing in disguise really. Blanchett didn’t fare as well. She looked like Clara Bell the Clown and sounded like Cary Grant. On acid. Scorsese’s direction made her look like a rank amateur and utter fool. Shame.

I wonder if Scorsese will include the Marilyn Monroe stuff. I have read a million things about MArilyn, and this is one I will never forget. It was heart breaking. It change my opinion of Sinatra forever. I had been ambivalent before I heard this. After Marilyn divorced Arthur Miller things were going very badly. She was devastated. Emotionally fragile. A few months before she died, Frank called her and invited her to Cal-Neva to "rest and relax." She thought they were friends. She had no idea that Sam Giancana was dying to meet her and bed her. She went and she was raped by Giancana and Sinatra. Horrible despicable people. Rumor has it that photographs were taken with prostitutes molesting her while the two guys watched. Someone took pictures. The allegation was that the photos would be used to black mail her in case she decided to go public about her affairs with the Kennedy brothers. I don't know if that is an embellishment or not. But the fact that she was raped by Giancana and Sinatra, and that she then attempted suicide was never disputed. Some said Giancana and Sinatra had a bet that Frank couldn't get her to come out the the lodge. But it was one of the ugliest cruelest things I had ever heard.

The thing about Sinatra is that he embodied such extremes - he was that fantastic pop song story teller instantly identifiable with his phrasing, sound and emotion.

That alone is a tall order for any actor no matter how talented.

But the other extreme is that he truly was a despicable person.

That would be easier for an actor to get across, but the combined requirements described here?

I can’t think of any young actor who could convey those two things. Di Caprio is too old.

Portraying Sinatra is damn near impossible; the Great Gatsby of things that defy filming.

And I write that someone who enjoyed Lurhmann’s attempt at Gatsby, I got what he was going for, but filming Gatsby remains elusive.

First IMO no one can be "the next Sinatra." He was singular. And Buble doesn't sound like Sinatra. But Buble has his own distinctive style and he caresses a melody and has a particular quality in his phrasing nad vocalizing that I find very appealing.

It's got to be Sinatra: The Fat Rug Years. DiCaprio is too old to lose the weight needed to play a younger Frank.

I was looking into it and I had no idea Sammy Davis, Jr. and Ava Gardner died the same year, just months apart. That had to fuck with Sinatra's mind. He was always in love with Ava. She used to go visit his mother even after they broke up. And he loved Sammy. Paid all his bills.

Rick Yorn is both Jlaw and Leo's agent. He could've pushed for her to be cast even though she's obviously not right for the role. But make no mistake this is Leo's project. This will go one of two ways: either it will eventually go by the wayside or it gets made in the next few years with another actress. Studios may not be so eager to have her star when they realize how much money she's going to demand.

When Scorsese cast Kate Beckinsale as Ava in The Aviator, I suppose people assumed she would be a good fit because she's an attractive brunette, yet she barely registered on the screen. All she did was call Howard "baby." For me, she just doesn't command the screen.

Jennifer may not physically look like Ava but she can command the screen and she does have sex appeal.

Watch this scene from American Hustle. She and Amy Adams are both good actresses but Jennifer is a notch above. You may have a different opinion but I thought she blew her off the screen in this scene.

Lawrence is a good actress despite what DL pimps. I want to see her work with good directors and see what she does with it.

Frank was Bi-Polar. Frank had a gorgeous voice. One of a kind, really. He was from Hoboken. His mother was a midwife/abortionist, his father was a fireman. as he rose in popularity he hung out with mobsters who treated him as their personal mascot. He got married. HE had three kids. He cheated. He got married and divorce and ended up with four wives. ...consecutively. He dated a lot of women. He helped some of his friends. He hated the press. He won an Oscar and he had a successful movie career. Then he died. Point is, nothing unusual or unique happened to him. He didn't have a big interesting life. He was the kind of guy People Magazine would dine out on if it existed back then.

The HBO documentary about Frank a decade ago made me think his life would be interesting to watch a movie about actually.

I could’ve pictured Leo as Frank if this were the 2000s/2010s maybe, but unless this solely focuses on Frank during his relationship with Mia Farrow, I don’t see it.

We need a Sammy Davis Jr. biopic before a Frank biopic.

I've never watched a movie because DiCaprio was in it. I never even regard him as an added bonus in a film. But I have no interest in seeing this. And Scorsese really needs to get away from him. Women (actresses) always have to play the "mom" once they pass 35. Meanwhile, men can continue to play younger characters, despite their age.

There are so few actors who actually look like Frank Sinatra. I think Leo is as good as any other, but he's older, now.

Jennifer Lawrence could probably play Ava Gardner, but she'd be a lot younger than Leo. But - typical Hollywood casting: old man, young woman.

JL would need to darken her hair, but I think she could give off the attitude.

Jennifer can act and that's what this role will need, an actual actress not just window dressing. Many of the actresses mentioned above may be physically attractive but I don't think they have what it takes to portray Ava.

As R141 said, Jennifer can bring the attitude plus I feel she's capable of showing the many other facets of this woman. I would think Scorsese would focus the most on this pairing as opposed to his marriages to Nancy, Mia or Barbara. Frank and Ava got together in their prime and Scorsese tends to focus on certain periods of his subjects' lives like he did in The Aviator.

If this were a David O Russell film he'd be casting Elisabeth Röhm as Nancy. Why he cast her as an Italian in his films is beyond me.
