Today, Apr 16, is the 10th anniversary of the Sewol Ferry tragedy
It resulted in the impeachment of the president, life imprisonment of the captain, imprisonment of the crew...
[quote]Seoul: Ten years ago Tuesday, an overloaded South Korean ferry capsized and sank, killing hundreds of schoolchildren who had been ordered to stay in their cabins even as the captain evacuated.
[quote]The accident and botched rescue triggered nationwide fury. The ship's "incompetent" crew were jailed, the wreckage of the Sewol ferry lifted, and South Korea's then-president Park Geun-hye impeached, in part over her disastrous mishandling of the accident.
The tragedy is that the government allowed the children to drown, as they would not allow rescuers to approach the sinking ship.

In 2017, BTS released " Spring Day," a song in memory of those who dies. In it, they use allusions to " Snowpiercer," and "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas," the story of a utopian society whose survival depends on the continued suffering of a young child. The song is still on the charts after all these years.

Horrible horrible story. The captain (first one rescued) is in prison, the President was forced out of office, the boss of the company committed suicide but no mention of punishment for the Coast Guard who were totally inept.
Chilling to hear the radio transmissions, “yes we searched the cabins, all the passengers are off”. I have to say from traveling in Asia, I learned not to ask yes/no questions because the answer is always yes so as to save face and not to disappoint you. Asking directions or if something will be done in time is pretty minor though compared to this catastrophe.
