The Departed (2006)
I watched The Departed last night for the first time in ages. What great movie displaying the cat-and-mouse game between the Boston PD and the Boston Mafia. Filmed on location in Beantown, this was the film that finally won Martin Scorsese the Academy Award.
Directed by Martin Scorsese
Written by William Monahan
Music by Howard Shore, The Rolling Stone, Patsy Cline, The Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, Dropkick Murphys, and Gaetano Donizetti
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Vera Farminga, Alec Baldwin, Ray Winstone, Anthony Anderson, Kevin Corrigan, and JACK NICHOLSON

Excellent movie and Martin Sheen did an impressive Boston accent. Most can't get it right who aren't from New England.

Martin Sheen was also the only likable character in the film

OP, have you seen the original, "Infernal Affairs" from which, "The Departed" is based upon?

I too saw it again recently and loved it all over again. Great cast in depth, testosterone brutality aplenty, never a dull moment. Up there with the very best of urban noir.

Matt Damon was an arrogant POS in this

Great use of “Let It Loose” by The Rolling Stones in that scene in the bar. One of the best tracks on Exile on Main Street.

Jack Nicholson overacted.
This was a really good movie, though.
Alec Baldwin's character was hilarious.

Alec Baldwin’s character was Hilario-ious!

I agree on Nicholson’s acting, I rewatched this recently and was surprised at how hammy his performance was — it has not aged well. Otherwise, stellar movie, still highly enjoyable.

Loved Mark W in this. He and Sheen projected a real affection between their characters.
Nicholson was much better as the Whitey Bulger character than Johnny Depp in Black Sunday.

As usual with Scorsese films, the soundtrack is outstanding.

Scorsese soundtracks are divine, from 1970's rock bands to 1950's ballads to opera, he has a gift for music

Scorsese's soundtracks are always the same. How many times can you use "Gimme Shelter."

I think this film was the first time I liked DiCaprio as an adult actor. And it's probably the one time Wahlberg was more than just competent, though his role wasn't difficult.
The film is very well done, but I think INFERNAL AFFAIRS is a better movie, though not by much.

one of Scorsese's worst. A hyper testosterone shouting fest. If the police were always keeping a watch on Jack's character did they never see him with Matt Damon? DiCaprio was miscast and Damon's sexual problems were murky. Why would he marry the police psychiatrist? The film didn't make sense!

I was in love with Matt Damon's little son of a bitch character in this film. Always rooted for him (sorry, not sorry).
One of the few DiCaprio roles that actually made me jerk off to him (the other one was in "The Wolf of Wall Street").
Wahlberg and Sheen were stellar supporting performances (I think Sheen also deserved a Supporting Actor nomination at the Oscars).
Nicholson's overacting wasn't that bad. Baldwin was more of a comic relief character. Ray Winstone seemed kinda invisible.
Totally hated Vera Farmiga's character. She was like watching Helen of Troy, but working as a psychiatrist.

Please don't say Beantown. Ever. And Martin Sheen did his standard Kennedy accent which isn't really Boston.

I agree, I wanted to be with Matt Damon here too

I've seen this film two times, albeit not in the last 15 years. I don't remember Alec Baldwin in this film - but I do remember the rest of the cast. He must not have left an impression.

Good movie but it’s kind of a joke in actual Boston, from which the real mob decamped to Providence in the ‘80s.
Aside from a few on location days, Scorsese mostly shot in New York, and the movie is full of “colloquialisms” that no living Bostonian has ever said or heard, such as Vera Farmiga referring to a croissant as a “French donut.”
Fun fact: the entire City of Boston has seen a total of 3 homicides so far in 2024.

Alec Baldwin looked fat in that movie. The wardrobe people also had him wear a too-short tie, which just emphasized his gut. But he was supposed to be a senior cop who had gotten lax on physical training.

R34 Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon grew up in Boston and Martin Sheen is a good enough actor to pull it off.

Thanks, R35. Someone upthread said that Sheen's Boston accent wasn't great. I agree that he was great in the role, though.
Anyone notice that Wahlberg's hair was long, for a cop? He was getting ready for another role, apparently, and refused to cut his hair for The Departed.

I think he's attractive because it was 18 years ago and he's onscreen for about five minutes. He's also the guy who makes sure that scumbag Matt Damon gets his.

Loved this movie. Loved Nicholson Leo, Matt and Mark Wahlberg and martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin, Vera Farmiga, even the supporting cast, the gangsters and the cops. And yes, I had seen Infernal Affairs before I ever saw The Departed. I'm glad Scorsese won his Oscar. It was well deserved. The movie was flawless.
