TCM airs "Goodbye Charlie" tonite @10 p.m./ET, one of the most gaga sex comedies of the '60s. Playwright George Axelrod aimed for Playboy-era laughs than stellar humor in this "Three's Company"-level romp. Charlie, a womanizer screenwriter, gets shot at a wild yacht party, & reincarnated as a female. Debbie Reynolds is the new Charlie, found naked by a rich mama's boy (Pat Boone), dropped off at Charlie's pad, where pal Richard (Tony Curtis) is at to settle his affairs. Alleged "Hilarity" ensues, my look at "Charlie."

IIRC, Debbie wrote that she was disappointed in this movie. She made the mistake of choosing Vincent Minnelli to direct. Although tremendously talented in his prime, Minnelli appeared to be experiencing some type of mental decline by this time.
Debbie wrote that Minnelli would endlessly arrange black object on a dark sofa that wouldn't even show on camera. And he was unable to give much meaningful direction.
Debbie also chose Tony Curtis to costar, but later heard that Curtis had been badmouthing her around town. Curtis was apparently angry that Debbie had sided with his ex-wife Janet Lee, and Curtis had spread the rumor that Debbie was a lesbian and had possibly had sex with Lee.
Mostly Debbie blamed the script. She said her acting teacher told her that it was a one-note story that would play well on film, and ultimately the teacher was right.

Debbie also wrote that Walter Mathau drunkenly picked her up and threw her over his shoulder during the party scene during filming.
Unfortunately the gown Debbie was wearing in that scene was so sheer that she hadn't worn any underwear. When Matthau drunkenly picked Debbie up and walked across the set with her over his shoulder, he had exposed her nude bottom.
Debbie worried that the film print or photos might still be out there somewhere.

An awful movie. The beginning of the decline in Axelrod's career.

Tony looks like he’s going through his mental Rolodex of male costars in order to drum up some enthusiasm for kissing that puffy female face.
