Yikes! And at night. Poor folks. What a way to go...

by Anonymousreply 3March 26, 2024 7:36 AM

Almost certainly failure of the steering mechanisms. Those ships take miles to stop. With the amount of traffic in and out of large ports, it's surprising it doesn't happen more often.

by Anonymousreply 4March 26, 2024 7:57 AM

I don't know how reliable it was but I read a post on Twitter that it was a loss of control supposedly caused by the Geomagnetic storm currently affecting the planet.

by Anonymousreply 5March 26, 2024 8:04 AM

Really?

by Anonymousreply 6March 26, 2024 8:12 AM

Seems highly unlikely, R5.

by Anonymousreply 7March 26, 2024 8:21 AM

Wow. This is a big deal. Thought t was fake at first.

by Anonymousreply 8March 26, 2024 8:22 AM

Geomagnetic Storm? Really? Are you always that quick to believe the most ridiculous possibilities? Let me guess, you love conspiracy theories.

by Anonymousreply 9March 26, 2024 8:54 AM

I wouldn’t want to be Pete Buttigieg.

by Anonymousreply 10March 26, 2024 8:55 AM

R9 I don't f****** know all I know is somebody speculated it so f*** off.

by Anonymousreply 11March 26, 2024 8:57 AM

Why? It's not like it's his fault. You type like MAGA.

If anything it proves his point that we have thousands of bridges in the US that need repair or replacement.

by Anonymousreply 12March 26, 2024 8:59 AM

Some people speculated that Jewish Lasers caused the insurrection R11. So fuck off yourself.

by Anonymousreply 13March 26, 2024 8:59 AM

by Anonymousreply 31March 26, 2024 10:13 AM

R27 let me explain something to you. This is going to turn into a criminal investigation. It is going to unveil corruption at the FAA and at Boeing. Biden never got his nominee for the FAA confirmed. He did not get confirmed because he had two years of aviation experience. Two. He had run Los Angeles’s trains and buses before going to run Denver’s airport.

Pete Buttigeig will be the one to fall on his sword for this. I don’t event believe Buttigeig chose him, I believe this was a patronage reward. But someone will fall, and it will be Buttigeig, who is expendable.

When a commercial vessel enters the Chesapeake Bay at Norfolk, Virginia it is boarded by a Harbor Pilot who captains the vessel up the Chesapeake Bay. That ship was not being “steered” by her Captain but by the Harbor Pilot. There was most definitely a problem with the ship for that accident to occur.

The Washington Post reports that up to 20 people might be in the water.

by Anonymousreply 42March 26, 2024 10:35 AM

They just said there's at least seven cars in the water. It's being called a search and rescue but sounds more like search and recovery.

by Anonymousreply 43March 26, 2024 10:36 AM

The video of the collapse is incredible—looks like the bridge is made of legos .

by Anonymousreply 44March 26, 2024 10:37 AM

I'm currently watching a press conference. Baltimore Fire Dept Chief stated that two people were pulled from the water alive -- one was uninjured (amazingly), the other was seriously injured & transported to a trauma center. There at least seven people (that they know of) that are unaccounted for, possibly more.

by Anonymousreply 47March 26, 2024 10:41 AM

A collision involves two moving objects. How did the ship collide with the bridge? Was the bridge also moving?

by Anonymousreply 48March 26, 2024 10:44 AM

@r46, I have a scarier memory of a bridge I used to travel on 😳

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 49March 26, 2024 10:46 AM

There were also construction workers on the bridge.

by Anonymousreply 50March 26, 2024 10:46 AM

I remember my parents telling me about this collapse.

[quote]The southbound span (opened in 1971) of the original bridge was destroyed on the morning of May 9, 1980, when the 606 ft (185 m) freighter MV Summit Venture collided with a support column during a sudden squall, causing the catastrophic failure of over 1,200 ft (370 m) of the span.

[quote]Several vehicles were at the top of the bridge when almost a quarter-mile of roadway fell away beneath them while others drove off the edge, either because the drivers did not notice the collapse in the driving rain or could not stop quickly enough in the wet conditions. In all, six cars, a truck, and a Greyhound bus plummeted 150 ft (46 m) into Tampa Bay, resulting in 35 deaths. A few drivers – including former Major League Baseball player Granny Hamner – were able to stop their vehicles before reaching the gap, and as seen in many photographs of the aftermath, a Buick Skylark driven by local car dealer Richard Hornbuckle skidded to a halt just two feet from the chasm.

by Anonymousreply 77March 26, 2024 11:57 AM

As a child, I would freak out if my family was on a road trip and there was a major bridge ahead.

I would curl up in the fetal position on the rear floor of the car and wait for my father to tell me we had safely passed over it.

That bridge was scary to drive over and seemed in poor condition years ago when I lived there. Obviously maintenance has been done to it over in the years since (if not it would have collapsed on its own). There was a night crew doing repairs on it at the time of the collapse, unfortunately.

by Anonymousreply 86March 26, 2024 12:02 PM

by Anonymousreply 89March 26, 2024 12:07 PM

R79, the husbear said the exact same thing when we heard that. Baltimore refuses to elect anyone other than an African America, so, forget all the actually qualified candidates. “We got a brotha so it’s all good”

by Anonymousreply 90March 26, 2024 12:07 PM

by Anonymousreply 92March 26, 2024 12:12 PM

I live in the area and I drive over that bridge probably four or five times a week. I always thought that the possibility of this was very likely. Those poor people that got caught up in that, I can't imagine being in the car and having a bridge collapse. This will screw up traffic in the Baltimore area probably for another three or four years for or recovery and reconstruction. This bridge is the primary artery to the warehouse and fulfillment center areas of Baltimore in Dundalk. This includes major brands like Amazon, under armor, and wayfarer. There's going to be some disruption in goods coming in and leaving the area. They recovered two people alive so far unfortunately it's probably very unlikely there's other survivors. Very sad situation.

by Anonymousreply 103March 26, 2024 12:27 PM

from watching the video it doesnt appear there were any vehicles crossing the bridge starting a few seconds before impact. Previous to that lull it seemed to be steady traffic in both directions. Was there some sort of alert system in place or did workers halt traffic across the bridge as the potential for disaster loomed? Or was it just a tremendously fortunate coincidence?

by Anonymousreply 104March 26, 2024 12:27 PM

R104, they’re saying that sonar has picked up “several” vehicles on the bottom of the river. I hope you’re right though.

by Anonymousreply 107March 26, 2024 12:32 PM

r103 I am not r98. However, I was a senior in high school when 9/11 happened. We were switching classes and, in the stairwell, a classmate said something like, "We don't need planes flying into buildings!" I thought, "Huh?" During the next period, the teacher rolled the TV to the front of the room and turned on the network news.

I agree with r98. We'd never seen ANYTHING like 9/11. It was utterly surreal. Action movies were probably the closest thing, visually, to what we were seeing in real time.

When I saw this bridge collapse, however, my first thought was the Pruitt-Igoe sequence from Koyaanisqatsi.

Read about the Tampa Bay one linked here…a Greyhound bus was on the bridge so they never had a chance. Awful.

by Anonymousreply 111March 26, 2024 12:34 PM

One video said it looked like the ship lost propulsion and was just drifting when it collided. Impossible to steer with no propulsion. I can't even imagine how those people felt! it looked like the collapse was not gradual, but fast. Immediate. The ship hit that one pillar or what ever it's called and boom. So no time to back away from it. The time was early morning? Hopefully not too much traffic? How horrible.

[quote] Am I wrong for thinking that "It looked like something out of an action movie" is not something the mayor should be saying? He's not on Twitter. It's a bit flippant.

Regarding this statement, I thought it a bit odd, even tone deaf, when I read it earlier this morning. Now, I’m watching Morning Joe on my DVR and just saw the “live” press conference and watched the Mayor say the “most important thing we can do is pray” for the victims and crews.

Really?!? PRAYERS are the most important need to be addressed? Seemed like pandering to me, but perhaps Lady Scarlett and Lord Grogu are Baptists. 🙄

Let’s get back to talking about their closeted mayor

by Anonymousreply 141March 26, 2024 1:18 PM

From earlier in the wide view video, you can see the ship approaching and it suddenly goes completely dark for some time, then it starts belching black smoke and the lights come back on, but they've now drifted out of the channel heading for the bridge. They apparently also tried to drop anchor to attempt to swing the ship away and slow it, but too little too late. This is going to be blamed on ship maintenance and possibly crew management.

by Anonymousreply 142March 26, 2024 1:19 PM

Watching the video of the container vessel, it just drifted smack into that one pylon, and if it had not had a power outage it seems like with just a small adjustment it could have veered away from it. I wonder what caused the power outage? How often are those ships inspected?

by Anonymousreply 143March 26, 2024 1:19 PM

R137, I don’t ascribe to affirmative action.

I’m not criticizing him because he is black. I’m criticizing him because I believe he said something stupid and didn’t appear to add anything to the conversation and issue.

Please stop searching for racism everywhere, I’m sure your energies are better spent pulling your own head out of your ass.

I asked a friend at Goddard (PhD in aerospace and works on satellites that measure various of the sun’s “outputs”, for want of a better word): Solar winds, flares, etc.

I just texted him and he said there have been geomagnetic storms lately but he didn’t think there was one last night and if there was one, it certainly wasn’t strong enough to affect the GPS on the ship. There is one today but it’s minor and the only effect will be auroras.

As long as blacks consider criticism equivalent to racism, they will have the same issues over and over.

I see in real life and constantly on the internet that any critique of a black person is immediately framed as racism, while the same criticisms of white people are never addressed. These woke idiots are constantly on alert to anything black and ignore anything white.

CNN: The container ship Dali, which had just left the Port of Baltimore and was en route to Colombo, Sri Lanka, was not being piloted by its own crew, but by local pilots who are used specifically to avoid accidents like the one that occurred early Tuesday morning.

“Pilots move ships in and out of the Port of Baltimore,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld at a news conference Tuesday. The pilots get on board just outside of local channels, and take the ships into ports. Outbound ships like this one take the ships from the ports out to open water.

It does look like the ship is poorly placed when the power cuts out. Whoever was piloting it was not in the direction going in between the pillars as if they needed to make too sharp a turn even if the power hadn't gone out. If they were heading towards the opening and the cargo ship was drifting it could have drifted straight through unless current pushed it towards the pillars. But these were pilots especially for the bay so only they could explain what happened with the ship. Yes you can see there is no traffic as the ship hits the pillar and it starts to go down. Emergency lights at both ends of the bridge stopped traffic or it would have been a lot worse.

All the scientists - they can’t believe how much I know. They say, “Look at this guy. He has natural understanding of all these scientific things.” I have a talent for understanding bridges and boats and how they go together. It’s amazing. And the technology today. In a video of the ship minutes before the crash, the lights went off on the ship and smoke was billowing, so it may be due to a fire or power malfunction.

by Anonymousreply 291March 26, 2024 7:10 PM

THe lights are on and there is light smoke. Then the lights go out. And it drifts. Then the lights come on and HEAVY black smoke is billowing out the smoke stacks. I think the pilot is gunning the engines to try to advert the coming catastrophe.

by Anonymousreply 292March 26, 2024 7:14 PM

The crash could have been averted if the pilot had deployed the airbags.

by Anonymousreply 293March 26, 2024 7:17 PM

If the ships crew knew they were in trouble when they left port, why didn’t they attempt to drop anchor there and then? Get a tug to pull them back in and get fixed.

by Anonymousreply 303March 26, 2024 7:44 PM

Fortunate it happened in the middle of the night. If it had been during the day traffic on the bridge would have been heavier and the death toll much higher. The question now is what caused the total power failures on the ship.

Baltimore isn't a major, major port like the LA port or the New Jersey port. The main thing that traveled through the port of Baltimore was cars, so it might cause some supply issues there.

Can the other east coast ports like New Jersey, Savannah, Virginia handle some increased loads? That's the question

On Marine Tracker you can see the Dali's path from its pier to the bridge. It's kinda interesting (although sad) to watch the two tugboats that escorted it into the channel.

They released it at about 1:09 AM (one tug peeled off before the other), and headed elsewhere in the harbor. When Dali started to veer off its straight-line at 1:25 AM-ish (approximately three minutes prior striking the bridge), both tugboats suddenly stop, turn back south, and start BOOKING it back toward the ship (in futility). Law enforcement on the ground had maybe 2-3 minutes notice to stop traffic crossing the bridge.

Ship experts say the US is now completely unprepared for these kinds of accidents. We used to have salvage resources pre-positioned on both coasts for incidents in ports, but the Navy has decommissioned the units and are depending on outsourcing the jobs to foreign companies. Also, the default rule is to allow the ship owners to decide which companies to use for salvage, which means they tend to pick the cheapest, not the best or fastest. Since this is now a national emergency situation, the feds need to step in and contract with not one, but many firms and coordinate them. We'll see how that goes.

by Anonymousreply 358March 27, 2024 1:12 AM

R357 so they were probably paid much less than a black or white worker would work for, therefore pushing those folks out of jobs and lowering the standard of living for everyone. Guess we should let a few more million into the country.

It has now been confirmed that the only people on the bridge when it collapsed was a pothole repair crew.

A total of eight workers were reportedly on a meal break when the cargo ship crashed into the bridge.

The eight workers plunged off the 185-foot bridge into the frigid water.

Two of the eight workers were rescued, one who was hospitalized and one who refused treatment.

by Anonymousreply 365March 27, 2024 1:33 AM

R347, yes there are maritime/merchant marine colleges, Kings Point NY is one, for deck and engine officers. It’s a very demanding course. US flagged ships—not that many in the scheme of things—are unionized and the salary is very good. You work something like two months on and one month off. On your off time, you can be sent for more training or additional courses to be promoted. It tough on marriages with kids, being away most of the time. Lots of divorces. You have the option of working on non-Union foreign flagged ships, less money, maybe less scrupulous shipping companies but there are a lot more jobs and you won’t need to wait for someone to retire to get promoted.

Also, it’s not a job if you want to see the world. Turnaround times in port are minimal and 99% you’ll be at sea. But you’ll save a lot of money.

The person who was pulled from the water has been released from hospital (don't think the other survivor was even hospitalised). They were incredibly lucky.

Has any official discussed the possibility of alleviating some of the traffic problems caused from having no bridge by bringing in car ferries like they have up in the Puget Sound area of Washington State? Some of the WADOT ferries can accommodate over 200 vehicles per crossing. Clinton-Mukilto is one of the busiest.

Great idea R404, it’d be like going to Shelter Island, but less glamorous.

Are arrangements being made to accommodate the Baltimore dock workers in places like Rhode Island? It won’t be helpful diverting the ships to other ports if there is no one available to unload them and the workers would be unemployed otherwise.

by Anonymousreply 433March 29, 2024 6:00 AM

What really floored me was I saw a Corps of Army Engineers guy interviewed on NBC about what they will need to do in order to open just the port back up.

Apparently, those ships are so fucking huge and loaded that they nearly scrape the riverbed so they have to remove every last bit of bridge steel plus all of the cargo debris from the bottom of the river so the other cargo ships don’t get hung up on it.

They will have to send divers down plus bring in special cranes that can handle that sort of weight.

I had no idea those ships came that close to the bottom of the river. That’s scary.

The people controlling the bridge had enough time to close it.

There should have been enough time to warn the workers, but nobody knew they were there or how to contact them. Someone has to be found to be at fault for this.

by Anonymousreply 488April 4, 2024 10:05 PM

Why must someone be at fault, R488? How likely is it that one must notify a road crew of pending disaster, much less be held liable for being unable to contact them?

by Anonymousreply 489April 4, 2024 10:15 PM

Part of the point of controlling a bridge is for responding appropriately to impending danger.

The employer should have made sure that their presence and contact details were known.

Are you unfamiliar with the safety documentation which should be filed before every single job commences in the construction industry? They were construction workers carrying out maintenance.

by Anonymousreply 490April 4, 2024 10:35 PM

I think most of us probably don’t know about that paperwork R490. How does it work at 1:30 in the morning? Is it supposed to be in a system where an emergency responder can put the location and time in computer and have the computer automatically generate text alerts to the workers on duty? Or is it something where you’d need someone who works in the department that oversees construction to get up, log into a system and look for it?

LIDAR is like sonar, but with lasers instead of sound.

by Anonymousreply 493April 5, 2024 2:29 AM

Elderlez, anyone involved in working on sites where construction/maintenance takes place knows that the documentation outlines scenarios like the one which has occurred and even more unlikely and/or disastrous ones, but more importantly identifies the relevant contact people who are running the site and carrying out the work.

In this instance, there should have been paperwork and inductions carried out every time a new staff member carrying out work started on the job, and the supervisors/comms people already had the relevant contact numbers in their phones and were familiar with whether there were humans working on the bridge or not during their shift. Working as a bridge comms? Need to know when starting your shift if there is a work crew on the bridge and how to contact them.

Safety procedures were either not implemented or not followed. Someone's head HAS to roll for the resulting loss of life. If there was enough time to close the bridge, there was enough time to call the supervisor of the construction/maintenance workers. Instead, the comms people didn't even know they were there. Not good enough.

As someone who works in the construction industry, it's unbelievable that the loss of life in this disaster is treated so cavalierly.

by Anonymousreply 494April 5, 2024 2:52 AM

Uh-oh. Wouldn't want to be the CEO of Brawner Builders. From linked article:

[quote]Federal regulations require construction companies to keep such boats, commonly known as skiffs, on hand whenever crews are working over waterways, safety experts told The Associated Press. There is no indication that the construction company, Brawner Builders, had a rescue boat on the water or ready to be launched as the bridge fell.

[quote]“If you’re working over a bridge like that, the standard interpretation doesn’t give you an option,” said Janine McCartney, a safety engineer for HHC Safety Engineering Services Inc. “The skiff is required, period.”

There was an audio released of the - I guess port authority? Or whoever was responsible for closing the bridge saying they knew the workers were there but didn’t know how to reach them.

It’s in the audio that was released right after the collapse between the Dali captain and (I guess) the port authority. You can clearly hear the port authority guy say there are workers on there and that some needs to get down there and warn them or call them. This is prior to impact when they closed the bridge.

So the port authority knew they were there, but didn’t seem to have a way to reach them. From what I heard, the workers were taking lunch and sit in their vehicles. Still, they should have had a radio or something in case of emergency.
