R1- ABC wanted at least one more season of Bewitched but Elizabeth Montgomery was tired of the show and decided against it.

R2 She was also having a very public affair with one of the directors on the show, and she was separated from her husband (and creator) William Asher, so that would have made it rather hard for her to return. Plus, Agnes Moorehead (who was diagnosed with uterine cancer just a couple of years earlier) had told ABC that Season 8 was her last - she was too ill to continue with a weekly series. ABC realized that without 'Endora' in the cast, there was no show left. (You can see a drastic difference in Moorhead's appearance on TV in Season 8; she had lost a lot of weight and had a tired, drawn look on her face).
