"No-shampoo" trend is growing among younger men and teen boys

The #nopoo and #noshampoo movement that’s been prevalent on social media in recent years appears to be gaining steam among teen boys and young men.

But experts are warning that flaking on shampoo could cause dandruff, irritate the scalp, stunt hair growth, and worsen scalp problems.

“Conditions that make the scalp itchy can mean that people scratch, breaking hair off at the roots,” Dr. Anastasia Therianou, a dermatologist and scalp specialist based in London, told the Daily Mail this week.

“But also, if sweat, oil and dirt block the follicles, you can find that the hairs don’t grow as efficiently as they could,” she added.

There is a radio announcer in Sydney who, after an interview with an expert, famously stopped washing his hair several years ago. He said it was horrible for the first six-eight weeks, and after that the oils stabilised and now it's perfectly clean and fluffy. He washes it daily in water, but not with shampoo or soap. Several of his listeners attest they did the same thing at the same time and they're all happy with the result.

I don't know if it would work for women with longer hair. It certainly wouldn't if you kept putting mousse and other goop in your hair.

I don't think dandruff is caused by not washing your hair properly. I think it's an eczema-like thing, where your scalp is particularly dry, which would need specialized treatment. I had a friend with true scalp eczema once, and her specialist told her to ditch shampoo as well, and only wash her hair with a quality moisturizing conditioner.

i rinse my hair with water in the shower and thats it. comb it into place and let it dry under a hat and its shiny healthy and manageable. not greasy at all. Daily Shampoo and conditioner is a sham.

by Anonymousreply 2March 20, 2024 2:57 PM

I tried not shampooing my hair for a week, and it looked like I had pomade in my hair. Although I didn't try rinsing it with water everyday.

by Anonymousreply 3March 20, 2024 3:07 PM

Filth

by Anonymousreply 4March 20, 2024 3:27 PM

I was on that trend years ago already when I stopped shampooing my bald head at the age of thirty.

by Anonymousreply 5March 20, 2024 3:34 PM

The stink!

by Anonymousreply 6March 20, 2024 3:41 PM

The itch!

by Anonymousreply 7March 20, 2024 3:44 PM

it isn't good to shampoo all the time but you should do it two or three times a week I think.

by Anonymousreply 8March 20, 2024 3:44 PM

We approve!

by Anonymousreply 9March 20, 2024 3:44 PM

I have not used shampoo for years and my hair doesn't look any worse at least.

by Anonymousreply 10March 20, 2024 3:45 PM

[quote]We approve! —Lice

Lice don't care if your hair has shampoo or not.

by Anonymousreply 11March 20, 2024 3:46 PM

We don’t like being washed down the drain.

by Anonymousreply 12March 20, 2024 3:48 PM

R12 Idiot, you do know that people still shower/bathe. And since when does using regular shampoo remove lice? You have to use special lice-killing shampoo and/or lice combs to get rid of them.

by Anonymousreply 13March 20, 2024 3:52 PM

No one knows what young men and boys are thinking better than the New York Post!

by Anonymousreply 14March 20, 2024 3:53 PM

I think you are taking my lice jokes far too seriously. Is there something you’d like to talk about? From your childhood perhaps?

by Anonymousreply 15March 20, 2024 4:26 PM

Wasn't Chaz Dean's whole shampoo thing a non shampoo? I remember my niece used his shit system, it was no shampoo, instead just conditioner and it made your hair sticky and then clumpy and then your hair would fall out. Yeah I only shampoo three times a week and you can say that those people are still clean, but that dude in the thumbnail looks greasy and like he doesn't smell good.

by Anonymousreply 16March 20, 2024 4:32 PM

I'd hate to smell the pillowcase of someone who doesn't shampoo regularly.

by Anonymousreply 17March 20, 2024 4:35 PM

Repeating: those who do it say their hair was oily and generally yukky for the first few weeks, but the point is that after that the oils self-regulate and then it doesn't clump or smell. Many people have now shown this to be the case.

A week isn't long enough, R3.

by Anonymousreply 18March 22, 2024 12:58 PM

People are fucking disgusting. Where's that meteor already.

by Anonymousreply 19March 22, 2024 1:19 PM

THOSE PESKY KIDS!

by Anonymousreply 20March 22, 2024 1:26 PM

I tried not using shampoo, and it turned my hair into a greasy mess.

by Anonymousreply 21March 22, 2024 4:00 PM

Hopefully, these hep cats are only vaping. Water alone won’t remove the cannabis and tobacco stench from hair.

by Anonymousreply 22March 22, 2024 4:55 PM

I agree, r20.

by Anonymousreply 23March 22, 2024 5:32 PM

I think it also depends on your activity level, as well as things like whether you smoke or spend time in locations with heavy odors.

The issue with oils and such is that the more you wash your hair, the more active the sebaceous glands become to produce oils. It's a cycle that takes a bit of time to stabilize to a new normal.

by Anonymousreply 24March 22, 2024 5:45 PM

Real dude bros run the ivory soap bar over there head and rinse.

by Anonymousreply 25March 22, 2024 5:49 PM

Am I the only one here who washes his hair daily?

by Anonymousreply 26March 22, 2024 5:50 PM

[quote]Am I the only one here who washes his hair daily?

I used to, but "they" say it's really not good for your hair, so I stopped a couple years back.

I do rinse it out every day while showering.

by Anonymousreply 27March 22, 2024 5:58 PM

Wash that mop!

by Anonymousreply 28March 22, 2024 5:59 PM

It's not your hair that things are good or bad for, it's your scalp. Aside from the root, which is under your skin, hair is dead cells and can't be made "healthier", though it can be made to look shinier, fuller, etc, with chemicals.

The no-shampoo advocates say that if you stop annoying your scalp with shampoos and soaps, after a few weeks it settles and ceases being unnecessarily oily. It would probably cease being unnecessarily dry too, in the case of dandruff sufferers.

by Anonymousreply 29March 27, 2024 2:49 AM

I have dealt with dandruff for most of my life and the only thing that has managed it is daily shampooing with an anti-dandruff shampoo (either zinc-based like Head & Shoulder, or ketoconozale as found in Nizoral). If I don't, my scalp gets buildup like you wouldn't believe and is itchy and feels disgusting. The thought of not shampooing my hair everyday is repulsive.

The dandruff issue aside, not washing your hair and going to bed with all the microbes/dirt/filth you've accumulated throughout the day in your hair and on your scalp seems nasty to me. Your scalp (and pillow) can quickly turn into a Petri dish.

by Anonymousreply 30March 27, 2024 2:55 AM

First, they have stinky feet because they don't wash their feet.

Now, they have stinky heads because they don't wash their hair.

What next?

If they stop washing their asses, it's all over!

by Anonymousreply 31March 27, 2024 3:19 AM

[quote]I'd hate to smell the pillowcase of someone who doesn't shampoo regularly.

I feel like the full bush trolls and hairy pits trolls would be really into that.

by Anonymousreply 32March 27, 2024 3:23 AM

Surely there will always come a time where people who don’t wash their hair with shampoo or soap HAVE to wash it. What if a bird shits in their hair? Would that one wash set back the whole ‘7-8 weeks of grease etc before it self cleans’ process to day 1?

I do think there’s something in all these products (face creams, body washes etc too) being bad for our skin and hair but who has 7-8 weeks where they’d not have to go to work, see anyone, etc to test out giving it all up? Then factoring in my point above about getting dirty at some point and having to use product.

by Anonymousreply 33March 27, 2024 3:31 AM

so many straight guys seem to scrub the fuck out of their hair.

Yeah, the “no shampoo” trend, brought to you by the same generation that never uses a washcloth, and thinks that just running water over their balls, crack, and feet are sufficient to call “clean”.

by Anonymousreply 35March 27, 2024 4:55 AM

It’s normal. Women usually wash their hair twice a week.

You can use dry shampoo to help maintain it too.

by Anonymousreply 36April 10, 2024 2:07 AM

[quote] If they stop washing their asses, it's all over!

Who says they're washing them now?

I read recently that there are men who don't wash there because touching one's ass crack/hole is gay.

by Anonymousreply 37April 10, 2024 2:24 AM

[quote] that never uses a washcloth

Haven't used a washcloth in decades. Just soap up my hands with bar soap. I do my butt crack/hole separately and thoroughly cleanse my fingers/nails/hands with the bar of soap before moving to the rest of my body.

Apply shampoo to my wet hair before the butt routine.

Rinse thoroughly at the end.

Washcloths are kind of gross. Can they really be just rinsed thoroughly enough to get rid of all of the germs after using, or are they supposed to be used just once?

by Anonymousreply 38April 10, 2024 2:34 AM

Washcloths are great if you're dusty, dirty, and grimy.

by Anonymousreply 39April 10, 2024 2:37 AM

I get that, R39.

by Anonymousreply 40April 10, 2024 2:51 AM

Jerks and stink on your hair. Gross. The oil leads to breakouts.

by Anonymousreply 41April 10, 2024 2:58 AM

[quote] Women usually wash their hair twice a week.

No. Most wash their hair daily. This ain’t the 1950s, gramps.

by Anonymousreply 42April 10, 2024 2:59 AM

Fatties don’t exercise so they don’t have to shampoo daily. The rest of us do.

by Anonymousreply 43April 10, 2024 3:00 AM

Wasn’t Chaz Dean and his ‘shampoo’ the subject of a class action lawsuit a while back, related to multiple people claiming that it caused their hair to fall out. Something along the lines - it’s not if your hair will fall out, it’s just a matter of Wen.

Young straight guys: Why won't hot women fuck us?

The ladies: You smell badly, pls wash your hair and wear deodorant.

Young straight guys: * douse themselves in Axe body spray or equivalent* HOW BOUT NOW, BITCH? LET'S FUCK!

The ladies: You made it worse! No way! Now you smell like feces, unwashed hair and body odor, and chemicals.

Young straight guys: Fuck you, bitches. I ain't jumping through anymore hoops for your ass. Andrew Tate was right about everything!
