Not Without My Daughter (1991)

An unintentional horror movie and total campy Frau fest. The based-on-a true story film depicts the escape of American citizen Betty Mahmoody (Sally Field) and her daughter from her abusive husband (Alfred Molina) in Iran, after he tricks her into visiting his family and takes her passport.

Hey! I always liked it.

So there.

by Anonymousreply 1February 20, 2024 1:16 AM

Love this movie! I’m gonna watch it again.

by Anonymousreply 2February 20, 2024 1:18 AM

Tell us how campy it was, OP. The title alone put me off.

And that kid in the poster is almost as big as Sally, it's about time she learned to walk.

by Anonymousreply 3February 20, 2024 1:19 AM

R1 no shame. It’s a fabulous movie. It’s just campy.

by Anonymousreply 4February 20, 2024 1:20 AM

I’m surprised it hasnt been canceled

by Anonymousreply 5February 20, 2024 1:21 AM

From this movie always intrigued to me because when I was 7 we lived in an apartment building on the second floor of a two story building. The unit next to us so it's a mother and her two sons and I overheard my mom talking to somebody about her situation. It turned out she had made an irony and he was the father of her two boys and she kept very strict eye on them because he was worried about him kidnapped them and taking them out of the country. As a result we rarely ever saw them outside of their apartment they certainly weren't allowed to play with any of the other kids and there were four of us that were all about the same age. As far as the movie my favorite scene is when she tries to appeal to the hearts of the female family members and they all start screeching at her like wild monkeys.

It inspired the TV-movie on "Schitt's Creek" that Moira Rose once starred in alongside Joyce DeWitt: "Not Without My Cousin."

MOIRA (after watching a re-run of it on cable): "I have to hand it to DeWitt. She had a real breakthrough during the denouement. I believed [italic]she[/italic] believed we were cousins."

by Anonymousreply 9February 20, 2024 1:26 AM

I told you guys many, years ago when I was a little kid and this movie came out I would wrap a towel or pillowcase around my cat's head, and run her through the house screaming NOT WITHOUT MY DAUGHTER!!!! So I guess I was Sally Field.

My cat's name was Snuggles.

Snuggles Mahmoody.

by Anonymousreply 10February 20, 2024 1:27 AM

R10, I bet your parents had no idea you were a homosexual.

Was it a rescue cat?

by Anonymousreply 11February 20, 2024 1:31 AM

by Anonymousreply 12February 20, 2024 1:32 AM

I went to school with a girl who escaped from Iran, and even her family laughed at how OTT the movie is.

It’s a classic of the genre though.

by Anonymousreply 13February 20, 2024 1:38 AM

This movie reminded me again that abortion is important.

by Anonymousreply 14February 20, 2024 1:42 AM

This movie always pissed me off. What the hell did she think would happen traveling to Iran after the hostage crisis and knowing how women were treated? No sympathy.

by Anonymousreply 15February 20, 2024 1:44 AM

R12 I think he meant "She met an Iranian" . If you read it that way, that babble makes sense - The Iranian father was going to kidnap the kids and take them to Iran.

At least, that's what I understood.

by Anonymousreply 16February 20, 2024 1:52 AM

R16 yes that's exactly what I meant sorry about that.

by Anonymousreply 17February 20, 2024 1:54 AM

Sally always loved the movies where she turned out to be the hero. An inferiority complex ? Hummmmmm...

by Anonymousreply 18February 20, 2024 2:02 AM

This movie TERRIFIED me as a gayling.

by Anonymousreply 19February 20, 2024 2:06 AM

In an apparent homage Chrissy Metz is titling her forthcoming memoir “Not Without My Snack Purse.”

by Anonymousreply 20February 20, 2024 2:13 AM

Was Alfred Molina an all-purpose ethnic?

by Anonymousreply 21February 20, 2024 2:20 AM

I’ve heard of but never seen and much watch this. I wonder if Sally’s character spoke with a Southern U.S. accent in this film? Her characters always seem to, in all her films. Because she always appears to be playing the same Sally Field in each of them, actually.

by Anonymousreply 22February 20, 2024 2:25 AM

[quote] Was Alfred Molina an all-purpose ethnic?

Yes.

by Anonymousreply 23February 20, 2024 2:29 AM

One of the most beloved ESTs of all time on Datalounge was called "Not Without My Daughter." It involved a gay father who had an overweight daughter whom he suspected had stolen a can of frosting from him.

by Anonymousreply 24February 20, 2024 2:31 AM

It’s being remade. “Not Without My Non-Binary Offspring” will star Tori Spelling as a woke mother of one who rescues them from her husband’s nightmarish MAGAT hometown in Southern Louisiana.

by Anonymousreply 25February 20, 2024 2:31 AM

I thought it was "Not without my frosting," R24.

by Anonymousreply 26February 20, 2024 2:38 AM

Sally's Eye for an Eye is better.

Sally was too old, it should have been "Not Without My Granddaughter"

by Anonymousreply 29February 20, 2024 2:47 AM

R27 that movie is tawdry

by Anonymousreply 30February 20, 2024 2:56 AM

R29 she was 44 when the movie was made.

by Anonymousreply 31February 20, 2024 2:57 AM

Well 44 is pretty old, at least middle age.

by Anonymousreply 32February 20, 2024 2:59 AM

Sally should’ve packed her Sister Bertrille outfit to fly out of Iran with the daughter

by Anonymousreply 33February 20, 2024 3:01 AM

Sally looked young for her age for a long time.

by Anonymousreply 34February 20, 2024 3:09 AM

Not saying this to be mean. I genuinely wish him well, but Bash doesn't look right. I wonder if he's on drugs, or perhaps he has mental health issues?

by Anonymousreply 40February 20, 2024 3:31 AM

R31 - I'm guessing R29 is from West Virginia, where most 44 year olds are grandparents.

Nope.

by Anonymousreply 43February 20, 2024 3:58 AM

Sally Field is at her best when she’s delivering a manic breakdown. M’lynn at the funeral, Norma Rae getting stuffed into a police cruiser, Abby’s mom getting handcuffed to a hospital bed on ER, Miranda realizing that Mrs. Doubtfire is actually her ex-husband. It’s the same exact performance every time, but it’s always compelling.

by Anonymousreply 44February 20, 2024 3:58 AM

What am I saying? Of course you're right! It WAS called "Not Without My Frosting"!

Sorry, r46--you were right, and I was wrong not just once, but twice!

by Anonymousreply 45February 20, 2024 4:01 AM

I agree with Pauline Kael's assessment that Sally is a one-emotion-at-a-time dramatic actress. She's better at comedy.

by Anonymousreply 46February 20, 2024 9:15 AM

OTT yes but it doesn't rise to the level of camp

Did Mop Top ever see her father again after they escaped Iran and made it back to the states?

Eye For An Eye is high camp and incredibly hilarious! The Macarena scene, the villain pouring hot coffee on a stray dog just to prove how evil he truly was, etc...

by Anonymousreply 49February 21, 2024 1:40 AM

R49 never saw him again. Honestly I don’t blame her.

R48, Sally Struthers kicking ass — doesn’t get much better!

I wish Sally was more of a DL icon. She’s so deserving, in my opinion.

53 replies too much to read, r54?

by Anonymousreply 56April 19, 2024 5:42 PM

When it came out, I was friendly with an older, very New Yawk man who was hard of hearing who kept calling it NOT WITH MY DAUGHTER.

by Anonymousreply 57April 19, 2024 5:47 PM

R56 - Yes, but apparently not for you dear. If only I had so much free time to myself too.

by Anonymousreply 58April 19, 2024 9:39 PM

I first watched this when I was really high and found it terrifying.

by Anonymousreply 59April 19, 2024 9:50 PM

I remember once in high school watching The Texas Chainsaw Massacre on a big screen TV just inches from my face. I was a good 20 minutes in before remembering it was a movie and not a documentary. LOL. Freaked me the fuck out, even though I'd seen it before.

by Anonymousreply 60April 19, 2024 9:53 PM

I always called it “Not Without My Oscar.”

by Anonymousreply 61April 19, 2024 11:44 PM

Correction R61 Not Without My Oscars
