I do not think Lisa Marie Presley was straight. I think she was bi. She was supposedly in a relationship with a woman during the last few years of her life. I never suspect women of being lesbians unless they are really obvious. First, women have so much more leeway in society to adopt opposite-sex traits than men do. Second, I’m never assessing women’s potential interest in me. My impression is that straight men also don’t very often entertain the idea a woman is a lesbian unless it is blatant. Does anyone but other lesbians actively actively speculate who is lesbian and who is not? I think gay men are always being suspected by everyone.

If you're a single woman who can put furniture together (and maybe enjoy doing it), easily replace a garbage disposal, swear a lot, refuse to back down to men, and are considered 'independent', straight women will at least wonder if said woman is gay. which I think says more about them than about the one being wondered about.
