A year ago today, Kirstie Alley passed away

So I thought Kirstie Alley was a very funny comedienne. I loved her on Cheers. But she's, to me, one of those classic tales: keep your mouth shut. Your politics, especially like hers, are unhelpful. Think what you like, if that's good enough for you, but don't get in your own way with your looney bullshit. (I think this a lot about crazy Susan Saranwrap and Cynthia Nixon, too, but she's got a motherlode of talent that so far transcends her extreme views.) But it's too bad about Kirstie Alley. I remember her as much as a loony loose cannon as a funny actress. Her Rebecca Howe was a great comedic turn and she fucked it.

She used to have a place on a large island (accessible by ferry) in Maine . It was a large rambling former inn, right on the water but also close to the road. John Travolta’s place was more remote and although still visible from the road, it was set back much further with a long driveway. She and her guests liked to dress up in fancy clothes (like kids playing dress up, not formal) and hats and go around. The locals liked her from what I was told, she was friendly.

She is very funny in "Look Who's Talking" (the first one, which is the only one worth watching). I recently learned that the George Segal part is based on Harold Ramis (he impregnated Amy Heckerling) Alley's part is based on Heckerling of course. Olympia Dukakis plays her mom. Add in John Travolta as the love interest and a witty wisecracking Bruce Willis (a lot of improvisation on his part) as the voice of the baby - a guilty favorite of mine.
