Wisconsin Boy, 13, Who Disappeared 1 Month Ago May Be Attempting to Live ‘Off the Grid’: Police

Police in Wisconsin say a teenage boy may be living in the wilderness as a survivalist after disappearing from his family’s home last month.

James Yoblonski, 13, was reported missing on the morning of June 12, according to Sauk County Sheriff Chip Meister.

Family and authorities believe James may be living “off the grid,”said Sauk County Lieutenant Steven Schram, according to The Wisconsin State Journal.

The teen’s father told police that his son “had taken a family vehicle,” which was found by a deputy about an hour after the report was made, the sheriff said. James may also have taken a firearm with him, per the Journal’s report.

"He's a smart kid," James' father Bill Yoblonski told ABC affiliate WKOW. "This is uncalled for, to do something like this and not to talk to anybody about it."

Much of the search has been focused on the area west of Devil's Lake State Park near U.S. Highway 12, according to the Journal.

Crews began searching an area near U.S. Highway 12 and the Sauk Hill after authorities pinged James’ cell phone, Meister said. But the teen still has yet to be found.

During the search, deputies found “property belonging to James” at what the sheriff described as “a makeshift campsite.” Crews have located at least two different campsites that may have been set up by James, according to WKOW.

Authorities believe James “is acting with intention,” Schram said, per the Journal. They also believe James had “two woodland survival manuals” in his possession when he disappeared.

James' father told WKOW that he also bought his son “some off-grid books,” one of which he seemingly took when he disappeared from his Reedsburg home.

"I hope he knows that we love him and we just want him home and safe," he added. "He's not in trouble, I just want him home."

Authorities are exploring “all avenues” as the search continues for James, according to a second statement from Meister, released July 7.

Anyone with information about James’ whereabouts is asked to contact the Sauk County Sheriff's Office at (608) 356-4895.

Someone is making that child's normal life a living hell, if he'd rather go live in the woods than live with an abusive parent of school bullies.

If life at home was better than sleeping on the ground and eating raw squirrel or whatever he can steal, then he'd have gone home by now.

His family life must not be very good. I fantasized about running away as a kid but never did because I’d miss my mom too much

by Anonymousreply 27July 17, 2023 12:52 AM

I wish my brother would have done this when we were kids.

by Anonymousreply 28July 17, 2023 12:55 AM

I also fantasized about running away as a kid, but I knew damn well I had no place to go.

And there weren't any survivable woods nearby, not that the Wisconsin woods will be survivable come November.

by Anonymousreply 29July 17, 2023 1:00 AM

He definitely must have an abusive home life if he went to this extreme for so long.

by Anonymousreply 30July 17, 2023 1:01 AM

[quote][R21], did she ever go back to “normal” sometime after he was born?

r26 Not really. Her issue was with a bad temper that got dialed up to 100 when pregnant. According to witness reports, she was the same way when pregnant with me. She only "calmed down" as she aged. She's currently just neurotic, now.

by Anonymousreply 31July 17, 2023 1:55 AM

This is a local story. Online commenters have been recently turning away from the "survivalist kid" angle and are pretty sure foul play was involved. I still think the kid is out there. There are a million places to hide out, this area is filled with wooded hills, caves, abandoned mines & farmsteads, Bluffs, outcroppings, hidden valleys. The area he was supposedly in is considered dangerous for hikers. He could have fallen. If the campsites they've been finding are actually his, that's a good sign. I say leave the kid alone though; he's probably trying to escape a shitty home life. I ran away as a teenager too.

by Anonymousreply 32July 17, 2023 2:11 AM

I grew up in this area; in fact, one of my high school friend's family home is in the stretch of land they're searching. This kid will be in some real danger if he's still out there when deer season starts. We couldn't even hang out in the open yard around my friend's house then. Their house was hit several times by stray bullets, and you didn't want to be something moving around through the woods without a blaze jacket.

by Anonymousreply 33July 17, 2023 7:35 AM

The parents probably killed him.

by Anonymousreply 34July 17, 2023 11:06 AM

Yeah, I wouldn't be so quick to admit that i bought the survivalist books if I was the dad.

by Anonymousreply 35July 17, 2023 11:21 AM

Dead.

by Anonymousreply 36July 17, 2023 5:46 PM

I blame YouTube. There are thousands of military guys making videos of how to survive in the wilderness. They sometimes make me want to quit my job and sell my house, and go live in the mountains.

But there's no DoorDash or UberEats, so I snap out of it, and get back on the hamster wheel.

by Anonymousreply 37July 17, 2023 5:59 PM

I agree that this is EXTREMELY suspicious, and the parents don't appear to be as distraught as they should be. Moreover, a 13-year-old is still a little child in many ways; it isn't normal AT ALL for him to have decided to leave his family home and attempt to survive in the wilderness, without at least trying to maintain a very basic line of communication with someone within the household, or the wider community.

I think that the parents will have to answer lots of intrusive questions from the authorities in the near future, because there is something seriously amiss in this story.

by Anonymousreply 38July 17, 2023 6:11 PM

by Anonymousreply 39July 17, 2023 7:57 PM

by Anonymousreply 40July 17, 2023 9:37 PM

If he’s alive, future junkie.

by Anonymousreply 41July 17, 2023 9:39 PM

The likeliest scenario is that the kid is dead, and that the campsites in the woods were made by other people living off the grid. And if the kid is dead and in a shallow grave somewhere, or in a deep grave in the back yard, the overwhelming odds are that he was killed by a parent.

And if the kid is alive and in the woods, the overwhelming odds are that he was driven there by an abusive parent.

by Anonymousreply 42July 17, 2023 11:17 PM

Sad.

I hope the poor little shit is alive.

by Anonymousreply 43July 17, 2023 11:21 PM

[QUOTE]"This is uncalled for, to do something like this and not to talk to anybody about it."

What a bizarre thing for they father to say. He expected the kid to check in before running away?

No 13 year old has the skills, judgment, or stamina to survive alone in the terrain posters have described. Unless the kid's holed up with a friend somewhere, I'm afraid they're going to find skeletal remains, if they ever find him.

I have been following this case since day 1 on Websleuths (ya I know). I became suspicious early on when Dad changed his story about the gun not missing from the home but from his workplace. If my 13 year took off into the woods I would be in the woods in front of the search teams, not doing interviews.

by Anonymousreply 75July 21, 2023 3:06 PM

[quote]This 13 year old is 5'11 and 120lbs?

Yummo!

by Anonymousreply 81July 22, 2023 10:50 PM

R79, yeah, but Barron’s height is extremely unusual.

I’m not saying this kid can’t be extremely tall, either, but a lot of these parents whose kids get lost or whatever have wildly inaccurate perceptions of their kids’ size— because they never paid attention/don’t give a shit about them to begin with.

by Anonymousreply 82July 22, 2023 11:25 PM

When they find him, he'll be 7' and 230 lbs.

by Anonymousreply 83July 24, 2023 9:47 PM

I’m not justifying the dads behavior, but this isn’t a young, small child. I have known of some parents who were very unconcerned when their teens disappeared. I knew a woman who announced “I hope he never comes back!” I never talked to her again after that, so I don’t know if her 16 year old son ever did come back.

by Anonymousreply 84July 24, 2023 11:16 PM

r84 Kids become irritating once they hit preadolescence, yes. But that's still a weird response from a parent.

by Anonymousreply 85July 25, 2023 12:47 AM

I don't know, r84

I have found that Mothers are quicker to sour on children than Fathers. Dad is more likely to kill you and wants to keep you under his thumb (unless you are gay) but Mom resents having given birth to you and would rather you just go away.

by Anonymousreply 86July 25, 2023 11:43 AM

What kind of people do you know, r86?!

by Anonymousreply 87July 25, 2023 4:06 PM

Hmm, what would be worse?

Mother’s “resentment” of me scrolling on my phone all day and playing video games for hours on end when she needed a hand with the groceries or the yard needed mowed, or Dad shooting me in the back of the head as I’m kneeling next to my brother and sister who are screaming in terror and begging for him not to kill us…

Oh that’s easy, Mother’s worse!

by Anonymousreply 88July 25, 2023 4:17 PM

R88 at least Dad has a passion for what he is doing instead of an icy indifference.

by Anonymousreply 107July 27, 2023 4:47 PM

What if the kid never existed at all?

What if the “dad” was cleaning out an old shed when he ran across an old produce crate with an old-timey painted label of a farmer’s son smiling proudly and holding a bushel of potatoes in a red and white check shirt and overalls, and he just cut and pasted the face from the label onto a generic yearbook photo of a kid in a gray heather tee shirt and called 911 and made the whole thing up to get outpourings of sympathy that may lead to romance. That would also explain the “dad” saying he was 6’ tall and 110 lbs, he was making it up and doesn’t understand the average 13 year old’s proportions.

Look at the image in R91. You can see it probably come straight off an old watermelon crate label, “Billy’s Blue Ribbon Melons!” and it’s that kid, standing there beaming, as in the photo, but holding a prize melon.

I planned my escape(s) a bit less efficiently than this kid.

For the first, at maybe about age 7, I went into the kitchen and notified my mom that I was running away and would need a fork and a spoon. She gave them to me and said she wanted them back. I agreed. And never got off the property.

For the second, I began hiding food in a seldom-used cupboard that I could reach. My cousins came over, discovered the stash, and ate it.

After that I settled for fantasizing.

by Anonymousreply 132August 4, 2023 5:29 PM

Polygraph tests are bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 133August 4, 2023 5:48 PM

I think if this kid was alive, someone would have spotted him by now.

by Anonymousreply 134August 4, 2023 6:28 PM

I planed to run away to the Morgan Library or the Frick. Inspired by From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. I was meticulous about it and detailed plans. I guess common sense prevailed. Would have been a great experience to have done it, however.

by Anonymousreply 135August 4, 2023 6:36 PM

I loved that book when I was a kid, R135!

Of course, now I wonder if museums had to put up with a spate of runaway children, in the sixties and seventies.

And then I woke up and realized I was gay!

Now his father thinks he was coerced to run away. Won't post the link because the only one I could find is to Fox News.

by Anonymousreply 138August 10, 2023 7:58 PM

Did the father say who could have coerced his son?

by Anonymousreply 139August 10, 2023 8:07 PM

The dad killed him and knows he's dead.

"Coerced" is just another distraction for the cops.

This dude did a Drew Peterson and probably put that poor kid in a vat of acid so there was no evidence.

by Anonymousreply 140August 10, 2023 8:11 PM

Here's what the article says, r139:

Dad of missing Wisconsin boy, 13, who left home in family van believes he may have been coerced

James Yoblonski, 13, apparently left his Wisconsin home on June 12 in his family's van and possibly with his father's gun

The father of a missing 13-year-old Wisconsin boy said he believes his son drove away from home in a family van — potentially at the request or coercion of another person.

William Yoblonski reported his son, James Yoblonski, missing on June 12 to the Sauk County authorities, saying the 13-year-old fled their Reedsburg home in the family van overnight, possibly with William's handgun.

"It's not like him to do anything like this," Yoblonski, a single father with four children, told Fox News Digital. "I mean, he's never driven my vehicle on the streets or anything. He's moved my van around my shop a couple times. That was it."

Video footage caught James walking out of his home around midnight on June 12 and walking across the street to the family van. He sat inside the van for about an hour before taking off, his dad explained.

Investigators discovered searches on James' electronic devices "about being a minor on an airplane and crossing state lines," his dad said.

James also took his father's cell phone when he left home, which pinged on the western edge of Devil's Lake State Park on June 12, according to the Sauk County Sheriff's Office.

Detectives found a makeshift campsite inside the park that they believe the boy used, but William Yoblonski doesn't think his son spent the night at the camp because search dogs did not pick up his scent in the area.

"I think he left with somebody. I think he sat there and waited for a horn to honk and came out and got in the car with somebody," William explained.

William thinks James met someone online or in person who may have coerced and possibly instructed him on how to leave home. In a Snapchat video posted from William's phone, James apparently said something along the lines of, "'I'm sorry. I don't think I'll be back for school. I don't want to hurt anybody, but I might,'" William said.

He added that the "strange thing" about the video was the angle at which James recorded it in the family van he drove off in during the early morning hours of June 12.

"My cup holders in my van will not hold that cell phone," William said. "Somebody else was with him holding their cell phone" while recording the video of James, he added.

Authorities eventually found the Yoblonskis' family van unattended in Sumpter, Wisconsin — about a 30-minute drive southeast of Reedsburg.

William said he knows he is a suspect in his son's disappearance, but he recently passed a polygraph test from authorities that he said proves otherwise. He added that he is "very upset" with the sheriff's office for a lack of answers. William is also offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to his son's whereabouts.

"I just want my son back. That's why I put up a $10,000 reward. If I could afford to go more than that … but I just don't have that kind of money. Like I said, I'm a single father," he said.

by Anonymousreply 141August 10, 2023 8:25 PM

Is the mother alive, dead, what?

Maybe the mom is going through her own "survivalist phase".

by Anonymousreply 145August 10, 2023 8:37 PM

Well, the absent mother is somewhat explained. This is the first I've heard about three other siblings which is a little shocking because it wasn't mentioned in stories posted here. Older or younger siblings? Was he required to be their caretaker on mom's absence and got tired of it all?

Is dad keeping everything on a tight clamp or is it LE?

by Anonymousreply 146August 10, 2023 8:39 PM

What's the mother's story? I missed it. I know there's an adult sister in prison, I didn't read about several other siblings.

But then I've read about this situation here in this thread.

by Anonymousreply 147August 10, 2023 8:43 PM

I don't think anyone knows the mother's story. Is it just bring reported now? Like you, r147 what I know comes from this thread. Are you somewhat local? I hadn't heard about an imprisoned sister.

Because if the dad is a "single father", maybe the kid went back to his mother. Who could, presumably, drive a van and hold a cell phone.

The story where the sister is mentioned is in the link at R114, R148. I’m not local— never been to Wisconsin. The Great Lakes accent is too much for my tender Texas ears.

R146, how’s the absent mother explained?

by Anonymousreply 157August 11, 2023 12:54 PM

The father admits he’s super strict, so maybe James wanted to get the hell out of Dodge. The daughter being in prison is interesting. Perhaps dealing/using drugs to escape her life.

by Anonymousreply 158August 11, 2023 3:42 PM

by Anonymousreply 165August 11, 2023 9:34 PM

Someone must've seen that kid by now. All we have is the dad's word. I think he's been killed by a family member and somewhere Bryan Singer is struggling cuz that's another potential suitor that got away!

In reading Websleuths there has been absolutely no mention of mom or other siblings except the jailbird sister. I'm leaning towards James having never been in the woods. Dad's theory is he met somebody at the spot the van was left. Another theory is that dad killed him.

Someone on WS pointed out we are only getting information from one source..Dad.

Somebody mentioned someone would have seen him by now. Assuming that the one image of him is a school picture. It would be almost a year old. If his hair has grown out he would not recognized by people that do not know him.

by Anonymousreply 175August 11, 2023 11:17 PM

by Anonymousreply 176August 11, 2023 11:25 PM

by Anonymousreply 188August 16, 2023 8:43 PM

R177, about the father's missing phone: that's a mistake a murderer might make under pressure. You can imagine him grabbing what he thought was the son's phone and disposing of it, only to realize later that he'd accidentally disposed of his own phone and kept his son's.

by Anonymousreply 189August 16, 2023 8:48 PM

Over 2 months and no one has seen this kid?

Dead.

by Anonymousreply 190August 19, 2023 12:47 AM

Have they checked his mommy's basement?

by Anonymousreply 191August 19, 2023 2:03 AM

Maybe the kid and his mother have started a new life in Costa Rica or Uruguay, somewhere the father can't find him.

Because if there's a "strict" asshole father, and the mother is nowhere to be found, there's reasonable odds that the father is abusive, and the mother either ran for her life, or he managed to get full custody to punish her for fleeing from the abuse. I've see that happen, sometimes a family court judge will side with a father who plays the devoted dad who wants full custody, and who tells the court no end of lies about his wife's cheating and drug use, and who will call his wife's flight from abuse "abandonment of her parental responsibilities". Now maybe she's dead, or off OD-ing on fentanyl somewhere or in prison, but well. It's a possibility.

But R4 mentioned "My Side of the Mountain", which is a movie I've been wanting to see for years but I am not giving YouTube a single cent for it. It is an old movie. But I love this old performance by Theodore Bikel, this song is simply gorgeous:

Seriously?

Which is more plausible - that a 13 year old boy is living in the wilderness on his own or that someone in his family murdered him?

Sadly, it's the latter that is by far the most plausible explanation. At best, he ran away, then had an accident, died, and animals ate the remains.

by Anonymousreply 202September 10, 2023 10:56 PM

"Which is more plausible - that a 13 year old boy is living in the wilderness on his own or that someone in his family murdered him?"

The third possibility is that he ran off with an adult, hopefully a relative who wanted to get him away from his abusive father, and not a predator.

But you're right, murder is far likelier than either of the other possibilities.

by Anonymousreply 214September 11, 2023 7:01 AM

Just the fact that Dad had living off the grid book laying around not buried on some shelf says he was probably a doomsday prepper nut job at the very least. Grown men who think like that are not functioning well in society. It's one thing to watch videos on the interest, it's a whole different ball of wax spending hard earned money on all that gear without a serious intent to use it some day. It's basically and escape plan. My hunch is he murdered the kid, and since he was in so deep to the survivalist fantasies, it made "logical" sense to him that it was a plausible excuse why his son is missing.

by Anonymousreply 215September 11, 2023 7:58 AM

I can't believe there wasn't a bigger deal made about it, even locally.

by Anonymousreply 224October 13, 2023 6:13 AM

R33 here. I asked my mom about this recently, and the local gossip is that no one believes the kid was ever out in the woods. Search parties were called off early because of that, and the investigation has been focused outside of the area since then.

There's a chance hunters will turn up something now, but the sentiment is that either the kid was murdered by his dad or ran away or was lured away from home. There's an article linked earlier in the thread that shows some evidence that the kid may have been communicating with someone else just before disappearing. Human trafficking, perhaps?

His little alchemical soul just felt the call of the road. He’s on his way to making a philosopher’s stone for THIS generation. It’s gonna be hip, it’ll have street cred, and it’ll contain the transmuted souls of 4-5k people within it 👍

by Anonymousreply 272December 12, 2023 12:29 PM

Will he end up in Hollywood doing tricks? Remember when that was an actual thing with run away teens. I lived there at the time. I am sure it's all on line now.

by Anonymousreply 273December 12, 2023 12:38 PM

Beautiful little gay angel, it breaks my heart that he'll never see another Christmas again.

My father-in-law was an amateur pilot. Had a plane. Took off during a snowstorm. Never made it to the next airport on his registered flight plan. Missing for over a month. Hard feeling your hope evaporate. He wasn’t found til spring when grazing began at a huge ranch. Wreckage obscured by trees and snow. Wishing everyone who loves this kid well.

by Anonymousreply 284December 24, 2023 2:47 PM

Dad looks like the kind of Wisconsin drunk who flies into violent rages

by Anonymousreply 290December 24, 2023 6:42 PM

Yet another peculiarity about this kid in the days of cell phones. No mother, no other pictures, and a haggard angry-looking father who appears to imbibe too much. I wonder how much authorities really know and just can't prove. Yet.

by Anonymousreply 291December 24, 2023 8:46 PM

R290 I'm bed dad has quite a few, somewhere.

by Anonymousreply 292December 24, 2023 10:39 PM

by Anonymousreply 295December 25, 2023 11:40 AM

Poor kid. Did they find the gun? He may have killed himself. He looks just like Mark Harmon at that age.

by Anonymousreply 296December 25, 2023 9:28 PM

Same, R10. I have a feeling daddio or someone else close to him may have played a role in his disappearance. Hope he is alive and safe.

by Anonymousreply 297December 25, 2023 9:52 PM

Is it just me, or does the sole photo of him look AI-generated? Very weird picture.

Go, James, go!

by Anonymousreply 313January 12, 2024 5:43 PM

^You saw the kid leave in the van with the father's phone? The father looks devastated, there's a sister, brother, house, nice dog a small business, I don't think he's responsible. The kid has crazy eyes, I'd bet early onset schizophrenia or a pedo on picked him up on the road. Sad. Yeah, the retouched photo gives me baby drag queen vibes but the other photos make him seem off.

by Anonymousreply 314January 12, 2024 5:58 PM

We're in the midst of a blizzard in Wisconsin. Over 8" of snow and then three straight days of freezing or below temperatures. If he's really outside, he won't make it.

by Anonymousreply 315January 12, 2024 8:21 PM

Julian Sands was his hero.

by Anonymousreply 316January 12, 2024 8:23 PM

Poor boy.

by Anonymousreply 317January 12, 2024 8:29 PM

Why would he take his dad's phone? Most kids have their own these days. Did his father not allow him to have one? Which smells like a good way to hid abuse. Or was the kid intent of stopping dad from calling the police?

by Anonymousreply 318January 13, 2024 2:03 AM

He took a car and a backpack of stuff; he was done with life there for whatever reason. This was somewhat planned out, and in this day and age, you don't just sling a stick over your back with a bag and declare you're running away. He took a CAR! And some things that he thought would help (backpack).

I'm not convinced he's crazy or schizo. That all seems some higher functioning rationale. Not ruling it out though. Many schizos are highly intelligent and have bouts of intense focus/planning.

But I weigh heavily on the family component of him not fitting in, being a scapegoat, being unruly and no one liked him or his ideas/thoughts.

He seems to have wanted to break free of whatever was going on in his life/head.

I hope he's still alive.

by Anonymousreply 319January 13, 2024 2:20 AM

The dad's reaction on video when he realizes the kid took the car and his phone seems odd to me. Most parents would be worried sick more than angry. Plus odd he mentioned both in the same sentence. Did dad store his phone in the truck? Not likely. And how did he know the kid took his phone in the first place? Wouldn't your first assumption be in a panic that you misplaced it? It feels like a setup for the video.

by Anonymousreply 320January 13, 2024 2:35 AM

My guess is that he realized the car and James was missing and then he went to find his phone to call 911, and realized that was gone too.

by Anonymousreply 321January 13, 2024 2:41 AM

You guys want the dad to be a killer so much. Look, at first, I thought he might be involved, too. But we just watched the kid jump in the truck and leave. What more do you want?

by Anonymousreply 322January 13, 2024 2:43 AM

James does not want to be found for whatever reason. I wonder why he stopped twice at his Dad's business though was money missing? They aren't giving any details about that.

by Anonymousreply 323January 13, 2024 2:49 AM

So the dad runs back outside to tell on cam that his son took his phone?

by Anonymousreply 324January 13, 2024 2:50 AM

Exactly, r322. When i first read this thread several months ago, i thought the same: family, dad probably offed him. with the vid of him with the backpack leaving in the truck and he left of his own accord; that puts several things in question.

HOWEVER, that doesn't exclude a possibility of the kid and the parents subsequently meeting up after the kid took off. I don't rule that out. There was clearly some huge disconnect between the kid and parents/family for whatever reason. it could be mental health, it could be something middle of the road, or it could be he felt the need to GTFO (abuse, misunderstanding, MAGAT stuff, sexual shit). Who the fuck knows?

This kid felt like he needed to leave. There's the real way to find out where he is.

by Anonymousreply 325January 13, 2024 2:54 AM

Yep, I am not saying the Dad was the killer, I am saying the way he is acting, there's a reason the kids was out of there. Stopping at his dad office is curious. Maybe to rob it of money? Maybe to ditch the car and make it look like the father left it there but changed his mind? I wonder id the dad's wallet or cash was missing? Why would he ditch the car right off the road where it would be easily found? Did he set up that camping site 100 yards away as a diversion for when the police would come looking for him?

Being that we have video of him stealing the vehicle, and under age to drive it, means he's capable and willing to break the law or do unethical things. Would not be surprised if he tricked some desperate gay guy to come meet him there for a hookup, take him home, then bail on that guy later.

by Anonymousreply 326January 13, 2024 3:01 AM

r326 I kind of don't think he tried to "trick" anyone. If you are fleeing, you generally don't let anyone know you're fleeing - that's the point.

I DO believe he was trying to get out of a (perceived or real) situation and did the things he needed to do to do it. Stole a vehicle, took things he thought were important to get away.

Which again takes you back to the motivation behind that (whether home or mental) reason(s). That would take you to the next place -- where he would go to leave his situation that would help him elude detection. It's a roadmap.

by Anonymousreply 327January 13, 2024 3:14 AM

When I was 16 is was very common for parents, usually the father to teach you how to drive a care BEFORE taking driving lessons. Illegal but everyone did it. But that was 15 not 13. That's a big age difference for that skill. That means the kid was driving even before that which someone must have taught him to do. I wonder if dad regrets that. In today's world, teaching a 12 or 13 year old how to drive is very risky not to mention illegal. So apparently respect for the law was not something his father was trying to impress upon him.

by Anonymousreply 328January 13, 2024 3:51 AM

Most of the boys/girls living in rural areas and especially on farms learn how to drive tractors, etc. when they are around his age.

by Anonymousreply 329January 13, 2024 4:10 AM

r328

by Anonymousreply 330January 13, 2024 4:12 AM

r328 yet it maybe a way for him to leave an unhealthy situation for him - at least in his mind. That's happened for years on end - underage kids have set out on their own for reasons real or perceived because they just couldn't stand it anymore, and let's hope he did this to save himself and not because of a mental health issue that wasn't under control for whatever reason.

That said, i'm sure there's something in the family where he just didn't fit with their family ideal (for whatever reason) and they let him know it. just my thought.

by Anonymousreply 331January 13, 2024 4:17 AM

I know R329, my mom grew up on a farm, that that was decades ago when the law was different. If a cop saw you swerving on the highway he would pull you over, tell you to be safe and fallow you home not arrest you for a DUI. But things are a lot different now. Kids these days cant even drive alone in a car legally at 16 without another adult over 21 in the car etc. With that in mind I would think most parents have cut way back on the idea of teaching kids to drive tractors or other vehicles at the age of 13. Really stiff penalties if that kid ever gets caught driving on the freeway. Which the parents would have to pay for. Plus loss of license etc.

by Anonymousreply 332January 13, 2024 4:26 AM

His father has malformed psychopath ears.

by Anonymousreply 333January 13, 2024 6:58 AM

My guess is the dad killed his femmy son. He could've been masquerading as some rando on the kid's socials and got him to leave his house and then whacked him in the woods.

by Anonymousreply 334January 13, 2024 12:52 PM

I no longer think dad is involved. I am the poster way back who had a male friend who left home at 14 because he was tired of fighting with his parents and wanted to live by his own rules. He made it work and is in his 40’s now. If you are street savvy and can network, you can do it.

by Anonymousreply 335January 13, 2024 1:02 PM

Whether the dad was involved or not, I don't think the kid had a good home life. Just look at the state of that kitchen in the interview. Moreover dear ol' dad has a daughter in prison. He was never up for any dad of the year awards. And as a poster upthread stated, his anger at the realization of his kid missing is suspect. That's not the reaction of a caring parent.

by Anonymousreply 336January 13, 2024 2:43 PM

R336 if I woke up in the morning and saw that my car and 13 year old were missing I think I would be pissed too.

by Anonymousreply 337January 13, 2024 3:07 PM

Fair point, r337. I just feel the dad is not a good dude. I don't have much to base that on besides some conscious bias and my gut. Hope I'm wrong.

by Anonymousreply 338January 13, 2024 3:47 PM

And the ears^^

[quote]if I woke up in the morning and saw that my car and 13 year old were missing I think I would be pissed too.

by Anonymousreply 343January 17, 2024 11:55 AM

R343 irrelevant, we’re talking about the psycho reaction not what shit kids get up to

by Anonymousreply 344January 17, 2024 12:14 PM

"Clothing, bags, hygiene items and the cell phone belonging to Bill were all found at the campsite. " The father's theory is that his son had a second burner phone.

My theory is maybe he met some guy online who was willing to help him leave his abusive father by meeting him at the side of the road where he parked the van. Kid would be smart enough to leave all his stuff behind so that the trail for a search would end there. There is also a mention of a missing gun but the father says he doesn't know how long it's been missing. In other words, the kid probably took the gun but it was probably not registered so dear old dad cant remember.

The fact that the kid left a social media post that it's no one fault, just his own seems to play into some guilt. Maybe closet and gay, he just could not face it, parents not the type to accept it and left home. Gay men used to run away all the time before it was as socially acceptable as it is today. He lived a rural lifestyle so things like that still linger in that type of environment.

by Anonymousreply 345January 18, 2024 5:01 AM

I was thinking this way too^^^. Kid set the scene up but was already long gone

by Anonymousreply 346January 19, 2024 6:36 AM

I remember at 14 I thought I knew everything. I am sure if I wanted to run away from home, I could have done so and not be found UNTIL I ran out of money which is why I never did it. Today someone close to that age has 100 times more chances to get away with in. Not just books, but a whole cottage industry online as well as experts on YouTube who could show you all the ins and outs of living off the grid for a while. Even something as simple as access to Google Maps is a game changer.

Getting a job somewhere under the age of 16 would be pretty tricky. I suppose looking much older like this boy does would work to his advantage if he had a fake id. Assuming he had a computer, I wonder how much they have searched that to see what he was up to before leaving. Why did he steal his dad's phone? Did he not have one of his own? He had access to social media we know that.

I wonder if it's true you can spend the night in a store like Walmart or maybe a department store? I've read that they have guards with dogs roaming around during the night so maybe not, but if I were living off the grid I'd sneak in to a store like maybe Target where I could get a sleeping bag and a pillow to snuggle up at night, get washcloth towel and soap to bath in the restroom, and then go to the grocery section to eat. Oh. And they sell microwaves so I could heat up a can of soup. I'd tidy up afterwards. Maybe put everything in a back pack so I wouldn't be discovered.
