Humza Yousaf set to become Scottish First Minister

Scotland's devolved lawmakers are set to confirm Humza Yousaf as the new first minister on Tuesday, after he narrowly won the contest to succeed Nicola Sturgeon as Scottish National Party (SNP) leader.

Yousaf beat out two SNP rivals Monday to clinch the party's top job, vowing to rejuvenate its signature policy of pursuing independence for Scotland which has stalled in recent months.

The 37-year-old will be the youngest first minister since devolution created the Scottish parliament in 1999, and the first leader of a national UK party from a minority ethnic background.

"We should all take pride in the fact that today we have sent a clear message that your colour of skin, or your faith, is not a barrier to leading the country we all call home," Yousaf said after winning the SNP leadership race.

Promising to be a leader "for all of Scotland", he pledged to "kickstart" a civic movement that would "ensure our drive for independence is in fifth gear".

"We will be the generation that delivers independence for Scotland," he declared in his victory speech.

Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) will vote to confirm a new first minister at lunchtime, with Yousaf ensured of succeeding Sturgeon given the SNP is the largest party.

He will then be sworn in at a ceremony Wednesday.

The seismic shift in Scottish politics follows Sturgeon's surprise resignation announcement last month after more than eight years at the helm.

The 52-year-old said she was quitting because she felt unable to give "every ounce of energy" to the job.

But it followed a difficult period for her government, during which support for independence has slipped.

Recent surveys show around 45 percent of Scots support Scotland leaving the United Kingdom -- the same tally recorded in a 2014 referendum which London insists settles the matter for a generation.

Yousaf said Monday he would continue Sturgeon's policy of pushing the Conservative government there to allow another vote.

That was immediately rebuked in London, with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's spokesman telling reporters that the new SNP leader should focus on economic and policy issues "that matter" to Scottish voters.

"That's what the (UK) government will be focused on," the spokesman noted.

Yousaf, who was health minister in Sturgeon's last cabinet, narrowly topped the SNP contest with 52 percent of members' preferentially ranked votes.

During campaigning, he argued the party needs to create a better vision for an independent Scotland.

Despite ultimately emerging victorious, he attracted criticism over his record in several roles in government.

He now faces a bigger challenge to win over the wider Scottish electorate, with a UK general election expected within the next 18 months.

According to Ipsos polling, Yousaf enjoys a favourable opinion among just 22 percent of voters.

Despite winning a succession of elections under Sturgeon, the SNP could also be in need of a boost following the divisive three-way leadership battle.

Sturgeon's last months in power were also overshadowed by the backlash to a new law allowing anyone over 16 to change their gender without a medical diagnosis.

The law would have allowed a transgender woman who was convicted of rape before she began transitioning to serve a prison sentence in a women-only facility.

As debate raged, the UK government used an unprecedented veto to block the legislation.

The UK Supreme Court last year also ruled that Sturgeon's government could not hold a new referendum on sovereignty without London's approval.

The twin setbacks prompted rare criticism of Sturgeon's leadership and tactics.

r3 I know its DL and everything comes back to the trans. But I'd say the supreme courts ruling taking the one power the SNP has over the rest of the UK away is the main reason she's gone. In one year the SNP have lost the only obvious peaceful way to an independent Scotland, and the UK government overruled the Scottish Parliament and they have no available response. The SNP were essentially defanged and she chose to cut and run.

So for all the fussing that people from the UK do about "immigrants" and the brown people, how is it that these two guys have become the most powerful politicians in the UK?

Yousaf went to a private school, studied politics at university, became parliamentary assistant and then stood as an MSP.

He has never had a job outside of politics.

That he only got 52% of the vote despite having the entire party machine against him, standing against a woman who is opposed to gay marriage and abortion says an awful lot about how disliked he is. And 30% of party members didn't bother voting.

He already has negative poll ratings and the more people see of him the more they dislike him. He'll be gone by Christmas.

To which another person replied, “Imagine if you told that 5 years ago to Brexit voters!”

by Anonymousreply 28March 28, 2023 8:41 AM

Well that poster doesn't understand the UK or Brexit.

Rishi Sunak supported Brexit as did Suella Braverman and James Cleverly, the current Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary, neither of whom are white, along with countless other non white senior Tories, because they're all British politicians and are allowed to have their own views.

Like the black and brown Tories, Humza Yousaf is a nationalist separatist who peddles economic fantasy to push a grievance with a union he wants to end. And he's entitled to do that because he's Scottish.

A lot of Scottish nationalist, many of whom are blood and soil ethnic nationalists, will be disgusted that a Pakistani Muslim is their first minister and attended the ceremony with his mother and female relatives in headscarves. Just because they hate the English the most doesn't meant they're welcoming to other people.

It's a strange phenomenon, very similar to what people were saying when Barack Obama got elected in 2008.

"Who would have thought that a black guy named Barack Obama, whose father was born in Kenya, could be elected President of the United States only seven years after 9/11."

Funny how shit happens.

by Anonymousreply 32March 28, 2023 10:02 AM

What a shitty selection of candidates.

Humza has infamously been crap in his roles to date, and he's unlikely to become competent overnight. Kate Forbes is homophobic and against marriage equality; hardly surprising when she's an active member of the Free Church of Scotland, an evangelical Calvinist denomination with socially conservative views, including opposition to abortion. Who was the other one? I can't even remember - too forgettable and anonymous.

by Anonymousreply 33March 28, 2023 10:10 AM

[quote]It's a strange phenomenon, very similar to what people were saying when Barack Obama got elected in 2008.

Humza Yousaf hasn't been elected First Minister by his country, he was elected as leader of the SNP by his party members, with a third of party members not voting for any candidate.

From an electorate of 72k, 26k voted for him to be party leader. - he won 52% of votes with his anti gay marriage anti abortion opponent getting 48%

In the 2021 Scottish election the SNP got 1.4m votes, 47% of the voter share.

Speaking of Corbyn ---

Labour's governing body has voted to block Jeremy Corbyn from standing as a Labour candidate at the next election.

The National Executive Committee (NEC) voted 22 to 12 to approve a motion from Sir Keir Starmer to prevent Labour endorsing Mr Corbyn. There is no right of appeal.

Mr Corbyn is suspended from being a Labour MP and sits as an independent following a row over antisemitism.

The former Labour leader called it a "shameful attack on party democracy".

In a statement, he said the decision to block him showed "contempt" for the voters who had supported the party at the 2017 and 2019 elections.

And in a hint he could run as an independent candidate in the constituency he has represented since 1983, he said he had "no intention" to stop "fighting for a fairer society on behalf of the people of Islington North".

by Anonymousreply 89March 29, 2023 2:01 PM

R89 And yet . . . Labour's Jew hating turds faction are such a minority that they voted in Corbyn as leader. Twice.

Starmer is attempting to rehabilitate Labour of its Jew-hating core. He won't do so unless he removes from the party every single one of those scum who voted for Corbyn. TWICE!

by Anonymousreply 90March 29, 2023 2:04 PM

The left's obsession with Jews started before Corbyn became Labour leader but he made it mainstream and acceptable.

Corbyn's brand of antisemitism has been described as "Golf Club antisemitism", the kind of middle class old school English view on race. Jews are the controlling manipulative oppressive scheming profiteering shadowy elite, where as Africans, Asians, Muslims etc are REAL victims of oppression and racism and need the support of people like Corbyn to overcome that oppression.

Of ALL the cases of antisemitism in Labour the one that has stayed with me is the woman from Liverpool who saw a Nazi era image and tracked down the Nazi artist who made it to ask for a hi-res version she could share. Kayla Bibby wasn't even suspended for it.

But Corbyn is out of the party and has 2 choices,

1. He runs as an independent and Labour Party members him who support him get immediately expelled, and his MP colleagues get labelled traitors for refusing to back him, preferring to stay on as Labour MPs. He either wins and spends the next 5 years in Parliament sat with the Tories on the opposition benches or loses and is humiliated.

2. He doesn't stand and just sends passive aggressive tweets for the rest of his life.

The Queen really dodged a bullet when she died. As far as she knows, she helped usher in a new age where women can lead.

Charles ushered in an age where absolutely incompetent strivers are placed in positions of power, even though they lack any popular support among the public. If Sunak or Yousaf weren’t of South Asian descent, they couldn’t get elected as lead hamburger wrapper at McDonald’s.

Elizabeth’s death was the death of Britain.

I know this post isn't serious but come on?

Rishi Sunak is a privately educated investment banker who married a billionaire's daughter. He's EXACTLY the type of person to achieve high status within the Conservative Party.

And Humza Yousaf is an arrogant rash incompetent man who stokes grievance wherever he can. He is therefore wholly qualified to lead the SNP.

Worth reminding again that both Sunak and Yousaf both got their jobs through party leadership elections and not through a national election. Sunak is destined to lose the next general election, and it's unlikely Yousaf will last until the next Holyrood election, but if he does then it's likely he'll be replaced with a Labour First Minister, Anas Sarwar, a Muslim with Pakistani heritage.

by Anonymousreply 104March 30, 2023 8:12 AM

Well start as you mean to go on I guess. Not sure what the actual role that is going to be other than saying "no" when asked "is Scotland Independent yet?"

Rishi Sunak is cute while this guy looks like a slob. I'm unabashed about that counting to me.

by Anonymousreply 107March 31, 2023 8:37 AM

I watched some of First Minister's Questions yesterday. He responded very badly to the criticism and jokes about his competence. He is very thin skinned and is very easily triggered.

Speaking of triggered there is going to be a by election soon with Covid Margaret stepping down. An early test for Labour to take a seat off the SNP.

Owen Jones is an attention seeking narcissist. It can't be long before he gets a show on GB News to have tantrums about Keir Starmer.

by Anonymousreply 110March 31, 2023 5:06 PM

I doubt you can't have tantrums against Starmer on mainstream British media.

by Anonymousreply 111March 31, 2023 6:12 PM

[quote]I doubt you can't have tantrums against Starmer on mainstream British media.

But you have to be invited on mainstream media to have tantrums, and shows like Jeremy Vine have their hired gobshites taking on every topic under the sun. Coming up after the break, should birdfeeders be banned to support the fight against global warming. We discuss with Owen Jones and Nainder from the second series of Big Brother.

GB News could have The Owen Hour where he invites various cranks on to talk about how awful Starmer is, with rehearsed monologues he can clip for social medial.

Oh my god Yousaf's political downfall is even more enjoyable than his scooter mishap.

He dumped the Greens before they could dump him and now he's facing a no confidence vote. If all opposition parties vote against him in the vote of no confidence he loses.

The only ray of hope for him is Ash Regan, the former leadership contender, who defected to Alba prompting Yousaf to say it was "no great loss" for her to leave the party. Regan, a proud TERF, has written to Yousaf asking for assurances over women's rights, something he won't do as it will lose the support of others in his party.

WHAT A FUCKING SHITSHOW!

by Anonymousreply 115April 25, 2024 4:47 PM

The Greens confirmed late Thursday that they would be voting against Yousaf, along with the other main opposition parties, including the Conservatives and Labour.

“We no longer have confidence in a progressive government in Scotland doing the right thing for climate and nature,” co-leader Lorna Slater said.

Relations between the SNP and the Greens, which both back Scotland’s independence from the U.K., soured recently, particularly in the last week after Yousaf abandoned a key climate change target, specifically the goal of reducing emissions by 75% by 2030, arguing that it was “beyond what we are able to achieve.”

The guy is being brought down because he told the truth

[quote]The guy is being brought down because he told the truth

He's not being "brought down" he's facing the consequences of his actions by tolerating a bunch of cranks when it was beneficial for him to do so and now facing their wrath for cutting them loose before they cut him loose.

The SNP are facing a bloodbath in the next election. Not only will Labour offer an alternative government but they'll be able to attack the SNP on their record, the party management (stealing party members money) and SNP conduct, such as trying to claim £11k on work expenses.

by Anonymousreply 117April 25, 2024 6:27 PM

Rumours tonight that he’ll resign tomorrow.

It’s lovely to see the Scottish Greens get their comeuppance. They have a handful of seats in parliament, but were very much the tail wagging the dog over the past few years. The trans policies they insisted upon have drawn attention to the fact that this handful of Greens on the political fringes are in fact deeply illiberal, seeking to police speech even in private households.

Finally, even Yousaf got the message that they are electoral poison. He got rid of them because they could not be placated or moderated, and were threatening to make further demands on him. He saw the writing on the wall: the Greens themselves will only get the message when the Scottish people deliver it at the next election.
