Decided to finally listen to this today after putting it.off because it is "so awful" . Nowhere near as bad as I expected.
Ethel Merman's disco album...yay or nay?

This should've been a poll.

This is where Ethel finally got to shoot her wad.

She was always doing something for the boys

I was just asking for opinions, rather than a simple answer

Before there was disco and Ethel, there was Kate Smith and The Beatles (with Cher and Tina Turner).
That slippery slope has been all greased and waiting since Sarah Bernhardt played Camille at 67 in a movie.

Oh, poor OP. When do your new hearing aids arrive?

OK, you're ugly too.

I know everyone says this about this all the time, but every song sounds exactly the same. So, if you like one, you'll like them all.

OK, you're ugly too.
Makes two of us then, cunt.

It’s a camp classic, and at first it really is hilariously awful. But as stated upthread, every song has exactly the same arrangement, and listening to it start to finish can be an endurance test.

Nope. It is barely listenable.

Some people seemed to have as at least three tracks have managed to go bouncy bouncy.

It's like the Jonathan and Darlene Edwards records. You only need to listen to one track to get the idea.

Why?

Rediscovered this on my own, so I thought I'd recycle this thread.

Didn't she ride into Studio 54 on a horse? She was quite a broad.

Ultimate co-option of disco by the heteronormative establishment. That was the time to bail and become a punk.

Pretty much ALL disco sounded the same. It all had the same backbeat and cheesy synth. It was for dancing, not singing. Yes, Ethel's disco album is terrible -for the same reason that ALL disco albums are terrible.

r22 There was some great innovative disco before it was co-oped.

R22 = ignoramus

No, R24, just someone with a degree in music...

My ex partner used to play it parties when people were outstaying their welcome. If that didn’t work, he played Diamanda Galas.

Actually, in the Cher/Tina/Kate Smith medley, Kate was good. I don't see that as a travesty, like Merman's disco album.
