Bishop Michael Curry - Breakout Star Of The Royal Wedding!
Michael Curry, the charismatic bishop and primate of the Episcopal Church, gave a soul-stirring sermon at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. His message focused on the power of love, and how it can transcend barriers and differences, and provide a solid and enduring sense of tranquility amongst us all.
Below is a clip of his remarkable 14-minute sermon, which is currently a trending topic in the news media.

It must be such an affront to the cobwebby side of the royal family to have this black dude preacher carry on like that. And of course the Brits aren't used to that sort of emoting. Hahahahaha!!!

I hated the speech.
Waaayyy too long. Also, inappropriate for the venue.
It wasn't an American fire and brimstone type of environment.
It was a WEDDING, with the BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY in attendance.
Out of consideration for the 600 guests, he should have taken up less time, and he should have made it about the couple.
Unfortunately (for everyone), the guy made it all about himself.
For me, he was the absolute worst part of the wedding ceremony.

Yup, embarrassingly long-winded and rambling. It will be chalked up alongside the father who sold 'humorous' pre-wedding photos to the paparazzi, and had to be ejected from the guest list to avoid overshadowing the wedding, the various siblings and assorted trailer trash relatives selling tell-all stories to the tabloids etc etc. This is what happens when you marry an American ...

The bishop's sermon was reminiscent of that of a Baptist or Pentecostal preacher. The difference was that his was actually rather brief and precise. These types of sermons typically last over an hour in the Baptist and Pentecostal churches, with many shouts of "yaess," "alright," "say it," and, of course, "amen!" by the congregants throughout. Some even rock their heads (the bride mother did that a bit), or swoon their bodies to such spiritual messages. It's certainly an African-derived expression of faith, which is very familiar to the average Black American.
It was, apparently, unfamiliar to most of the non-black viewers, especially those outside of the United States, but it was a wonderful reminder, and a show of respect, of the African American culture that forms part of the Lady of Sussex's identity. I'm glad they included this in the wedding. It was also a thoughtful gesture to the many African Americans who identify with Meghan.

Curry hijacked the wedding to use as his own spotlight. Like he was auditioning for something big and using the world stage to do it. He was long winded, theatrical and totally inappropriate. The royal family looked pained or ready to burst into giggles and even the bride was cringing. Nothing wrong with having a black bishop at the wedding but not this one. Poor judgement on somebody's part. Oh well, every wedding has its highs and lows. Otherwise it was a beautiful wedding.

That's fine.
But he should have EDITED the speech.
Much of it was redundant, and he could have done without a few of the irrelevant anecdotes. All I heard was LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, FIRE, FIRE, FIRE, FIRE.
One love and one fire would have been sufficient.
Even that guy Richard Quest on CNN mentioned that the 13 minute speech probably could have been whittled down to 10, and people would have gotten the same message. I totally agree.

In one of the many pre-wedding articles, it was written that the happy couple wanted to include an American clergyman and someone (sorry, I don't remember who) (perhaps an English clergyman) told them that Bishop Curry was well known.

I also enjoyed the speech. As to the Royals who seemed bewildered at it, keep in mind we're not talking about the most self-aware bunch of people. It seemed quite a few of the younger crowd e.g. David Beckham and especially Harry and Meghan, whose opinions should count most of all) got it, smiling and nodding at appropriate times. As to who invited Bishop Curry, I beleive he was actually recommended by the archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, but Harry and Meghan obviously gave their approval.

Bishop Curry IS well known in mainline American Protestant circles (admittedly a decreasingly small world).
He is a respected church leader and the Presiding Bishop (also called “Primate) of the Episcopalian Church - which is the US version of the Church of England.
His sermon (not “speech”) is what happens when priests attempt to seem hip. But, anyone who thinks it was a Baptist style fire and brimstone sermon has never been to a Baptist worship service.
I thought the chapel looked lovely - especially all the stained glass. And Meghan was beautiful.
It won’t be long now until Prince Harry loses his hair like his brother. I hope he keeps his beard. William should grow one two - like King George V.

This "woke" shit is like having a toddler insist it's going to tediously explain how to walk to you so you GET IT RIGHT.

I think he updated his own Wikipedia page, to give himself a star review on the wedding speech.
"His enthusiastic style was well received by both the newlyweds and guests"
Poor Bishop Morgan Freeman.

Cant believe anyone could concievably interpret the looks on Harry and Megans faces as this guy continued to carry on as anything but shock/horror/embarrasment/prayer that this will end soon. To say as one person just did that they seemed to like it and approve of it is insane. They were clearly mortified, and had no choice but to keep a stiff upper lip while knowingly communicating their discomfort to each other through their eye contact and subtle facial expressions. ( It actually showed how authentically connected they really are.) I would LOVE to hear the conversation between the two of them when they were finally able to talk about it!

[quote]It was, apparently, unfamiliar to most of the non-black viewers, especially those outside of the United States, but it was a wonderful reminder, and a show of respect, of the African American culture that forms part of the Lady of Sussex's identity.
First, she's not the "Lady of Sussex" you rube. Secondly: know your audience. He's an Episcopalian not southern baptist. The Queen is the head of his church, and she was most definitely not amused by his nonsense. He looked like he was one step away from bringing out a snake and speaking in tounges. Meghan was raised Catholic, so I'm not sure why she invited this twit.

The choir was dull, the cello player was dull, the black preacher was a fucking disaster, the showcasing of black culture was a massive fucking flop

I liked the choir singing Stand By Me. But yeah every other attempt at diversity was a bit of a shitshow. Preacher should have been yanked from the pulpit after 5 minutes.

You just know he will try to extend those 15 minutes as long as possible.

I wonder if the preacher would have been so enthusiastic had they been a gay couple?

"What I was attempting to do was to describe the deep pain for L.G.B.T. folk who’ve had to live with not being accepted by the church of Jesus Christ. And sometimes by families and loved ones, and by society. I wanted my brothers to know that our actions would bring them real pain. I said, anytime anybody is excluded, it hurts. I can tell you in all honesty my brothers listened. They did listen."
Bishop Michael Curry in support of gay marriage

Originally, I focused more on the speech going way over the allotted time. Upon a second viewing, I realized that it really had a great message that was a call for social justice.

the kid who played the cello was the breakout star. even if the message of his sermon was inspiring, rev was a shameless attention whore whose theatrics were inappropriate for this occasion. revs grandstanding makes one understand why many women become ruthless bridezillas when they wed.

"To bad if they were dumb enough to sell them for a fortune, blow the money on booze, bingo and holidays to Magaluf, and wonder how the fuck they became homeless."--r98
Ohhh--so THAT'S how people in the UK became homeless under Thatcher. LMFAO. (Love the typo, btw.)
r98 would have you believe the only people who hated Thatcher were guilty of the above as he puts it in the quote--as if what he describes was a regular occurrence when it fact it wasn't. He's just making shit up. Of course no one with a brain believes him.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned in the thread but some analysts claims Bishop Curry was making a pro gay marriage statement when he was talking about love in any form. This is the quote from the article:
"Bishop Curry’s comments about the power of love “in any form or experience of it” appeared aimed at the Church of England’s ban on gay marriage. The Episcopal Church is part of the global Anglican Communion and it falls under the titular leadership of the Archbishop of Canterbury, The Most Rev. Justin Welby, who directs the Church of England. Bishop Curry has been a strong advocate of LGBT rights and the U.S. church has been sanctioned by the Communion for blessing same-sex marriages. As an African-American, Bishop Curry has often drawn comparisons between the mistreatment of black people and the bigotry experienced by much of the LGBT community. “What I believe about human equality and dignity is grounded in what I believe about the love of God,” he told The New York Times in 2016."
