Pretty vs. Beautiful

"However, there was one picture in this magazine where her beauty just shown. It was an outdoor shot of her and her husband. She was older at the time it was taken and she was dressed very simply and her hair (which she used to have in very elaborate "dos" during some of her formal Princess events) was very simple."

I know that photo, and you're right, she looked stunning, and it's impossible to believe she's about 51, she practically looks the same as she did when she married.

She also seemed to look thinner than she usually did in her later years, so I don't know if her weight fluctuated up and down or if that was just the perfect angle.

I also agree that she sported some really dowdy hairdos in her later years. I remember one hideous coiff where she had a braid that kind of wrapped up and around her head; she looked like an elderly extra from Sound of Music.

Wouldn't Princess Diana be considered beautiful?

Her features were unusual, and she didn't look like anyone else.

by: Anonymous reply 122 09/28/07 @22:39

How about Eleanor Parker as another blonde who was beautiful?

By your definition, Camilla would be ravishing.

by: Quasimodo reply 124 09/28/07 @22:41

Diane Lane.

by: Anonymous reply 125 09/28/07 @22:42

Gene Tierney was beautiful.

Jeanne Crain was beautiful.

Linda Darnell was pretty.

by: Anonymous reply 126 09/28/07 @22:49

Kate Winslet and Keira Knightley are beautiful.

Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Lopez are pretty.

Brad Pitt is morphing from pretty to beautiful as he ages.

by: Anonymous reply 127 09/28/07 @23:00

R127 also thinks Tori Spelling is ravishing.

by: Anonymous reply 128 09/28/07 @23:04

I think the distinction should be made between beautiful and attractive. Beautiful is someone with classic features (Jacklyn Smith) and attractive being someone who had odd features but is still appealing (Julie Roberts).

Also, handsome applies to men better than beautiful.

by: Anonymous reply 129 09/28/07 @23:26

Are you kidding, r127??

by: you have bad eyesight reply 130 09/28/07 @23:27

"Nicole Kidman was always beautiful"

She isn't beautiful anymore. Too much botox and surgery...she looks very hard now.

by: Anonymous reply 131 09/29/07 @01:21

"For the person who said blondes are not beautiful, apparently somehow in your lifetime you have missed ever laying eyes on Catherine Deneuve, who many people (including myself) consider one, if not THE, most beautiful actress ever."

Deneuve is a natural brunette

"For all those who doubt blondes can be beautiful: Julie Christie."

Also a natural brunette

by: Anonymous reply 132 09/29/07 @01:24

I agree with r127 that Kate Winslet is beautiful, but the rest? No.

Speaking of stars from Little Children, I don't know about being completely beautiful, but Patrick Wilson has a beautiful ass.

When they were younger:

Harry Connick Jr.--pretty, Antonio Sabato Jr.--beautiful

Oh, and since I linked a Janet Jackson video, I'd say Janet is pretty and Djimon is rather beautiful (or maybe it's the video that makes him so).

by: Anonymous reply 133 09/29/07 @02:08

Leeza Gibbons, pretty beautiful.

by: but not the best dancer reply 134 09/29/07 @02:29

Looking at all these examples of what ppl consider beautiful vs. pretty, I would have to agree that bone structure and certain, striking features elevates a person from being merely pretty to a true beauty. All of those mentioning the INSIDES of a person as making them beautiful, while it may be true for some, there are plenty of beautiful ppl out there with black hearts.

I can't freaking believe this thread has made it to page 5 and NO ONE has mentioned Isabella Rossellini (although, points for her mother). Unbelievably beautiful.

I agree about Sela Ward and Pfieffer, too. Since so many mentions have been centered around actors who we mainly see through photographs, I would also remind you that often it's not until you are face to face with that person, in the flesh, that you can see how truly beautiful they are, and as someone brought up, how they can affect a room full of strangers. It's the whole package, and that includes watching them move.

For me, it's the eyes. A real beauty has amazing eyes.

by: Anonymous reply 135 09/29/07 @02:54

Kate Winslet is very attractive but not beautiful.

Jennifer Connelly is naturally beautiful even without make up and she never had a nose job. Her nose has a distinctive shape even in her heavier days.

Jennifer Aniston is not beautiful. In fact she's homely. We're not talkng about hair, we're talking about facial features.

Patrick Wilosn is striking but not beautiful.

Leeza Gibbons, also homely but has been made attraactive like Anniston.

Linda Darnell was beautiful.

Julie Christie cute/pretty. Catherine Deneuve beautiful.

Diane Lane pretty.

Sharon Tate beautiful.

Halle Berry with short hair beautiful. Halle Berry with long hair pretty. Or so it seems.

by: Anonymous reply 136 09/29/07 @02:54

Beautiful:

Beyonce

A young Brooke Shields

Sharon Stone in the original Basic Instinct

A younger Diane Lane

Pretty:

a slimmer,younger Kirstie Ally

Naomi Watts

Valerie Bertinelli

by: Anonymous reply 137 09/29/07 @02:57

Pretty--Gwen Stefani

Beautiful--Shirley Manson

by: Anonymous reply 138 09/29/07 @03:16

Vivien Leigh, Hedy Lamar = BEAUTIFUL

Joan Plowright = HAG

by: Anonymous reply 140 10/06/07 @12:18

Look up a Jennifer C's early head shots. 100% nose job. No way around it. Nicer before.

by: Anonymous reply 141 10/06/07 @12:31

I feel pretty but look beautiful.

by: Cheryl reply 142 10/06/07 @12:47

Beautiful I think is a lot more polarising. Generally, people I consider pretty, are universally accepted as such, and I find that isn't so with beauties. Nicole Kidman is beautiful to me, at least she's getting there again (see link). She stands out in a room. Whereas, I think Catherine Zeta Jone is just pretty.

Another example would be: Young Gwyneth Paltrow--pretty, her mum--beautiful.

see link

by: Anonymous reply 143 10/06/07 @13:11

Diane Lane - gorgeous

by: Anonymous reply 144 10/06/07 @14:08

Not anymore,r144. She has bags under her eyes as big as an overnight case.

She's not aging well, I'm sorry to say.

by: Plastic Surgeon Board Prez reply 145 10/06/07 @14:49

Beautiful is Natalie Portman as a teenager and child (see link). She was stunning. Pretty is what Natalie Portman is now. While attractive, she doesn't stand out.

by: Anonymous reply 146 10/06/07 @15:15

I think real beauty includes a mix of looks and mystery.

My vote: Deneuve.

by: Anonymous reply 147 10/06/07 @15:16

Zhang Ziyi = pretty Gong Li = beautiful

I so agree r10 great example.

I actually met both of them a few years ago, I worked on Geisha. Meeting Gong Li was amazing. The only person I've ever asked for an autograph. She is as beautiful as a personality as she is in appearance. Truly gracious and kind and a real pro.

by: Anonymous reply 148 10/06/07 @15:24

R143. Catherine Zeta Jones Pretty!!

That bitch is BEAUTIFUL. I hate her she is so beautiful.

by: Anonymous reply 149 10/06/07 @15:29

Beautiful: Isabella Rossellini

by: Anonymous reply 150 10/06/07 @15:32

r136 great distinction on Halle and I would agree.

Another vote for Michelle Pfeiffer.

I once saw her in person and it caught me by surprise, I gasped when I saw her. She was that beautiful and more striking in person.

by: Anonymous reply 151 10/06/07 @15:33

Let's not forget Greta Garbo, if we are talking about bone structure and eyes.

Dolores del Rio was beautiful, too.

But the fairest of them all is Elizabeth Taylor between the ages of 17 to 23. (From "A Place in the Sun" to GIANT)

Those who saw her at that time agree she was breathtaking, you could not get your eyes off her. Also, in person she was more beautiful than in photographs because pictures didn't capture the dramatic color of her eyes, the sooty thick eyelashes and the amazing skin.

And, there wasn't much difference at this time between her candid/paparrazi shots and her glamour studio photos.

by: Anonymous reply 152 10/06/07 @17:48

CZJ is not beautiful in person. She looks old and has a very thick, stout neck.

by: Anonymous reply 153 10/07/07 @16:46

Beautiful: La Devoradora, the devourer of men, Maria Felix, La Dona.

You're all her bitches!

by: fag with a velvet cape reply 154 10/07/07 @17:02

Yuck, r150. You need your glasses adjusted.

Her name sounds beautiful,though.

by: Anonymous reply 155 10/07/07 @17:08

Another vote for Isabella Rossellini, Beautiful!

but what makes someone beautiful? can they still be considered beautiful if they had plastic surgery or if it's only when they have make-up on, i.e. a natural beauty?

by: Anonymous reply 156 10/07/07 @19:21

You are forgetting Uma Thurman, who is a timeless beauty who happens to be blonde. Pfeffer and Thurman are as beautiful as any brunette out there, ask any straight guy. There are plenty of gorgeous blondes who remain gorgeous. It's just that there are more brunettes in general, so we focus on them. also beautiful - Christie Brinkley - if you saw her on the street you would be amazed

by: Anonymous reply 157 10/07/07 @20:11

Uma Thurman was beautiful when she was younger. After she hit her 30's she started looking very rough and the distinctive features which made her beautiful then now make her ugly. Beautiful - a young Liz Taylor, teenager Brooke Shields, teenager Olivia Hussey and her partner Leonard Whiting, Paul Newman well into his 602, a young Robert Redford, Cary Grant, a young Rob Lowe, Rock Hudson, Vivien Leigh, Catherine Zeta Jones circa The Mask Of Zorro, Ava Gardner, Hedy Lamarr abd Rita Hayworth, the fairest of them all.

by: Anonymous reply 158 10/07/07 @20:59

I thought beauty was something that didn't fade.

by: Anonymous reply 159 10/09/07 @18:20

r157, Uma Thurman is really , and I mean REALLY homely! Never was cute even in the beginning of her career.

You need glasses!

by: Anonymous reply 160 10/09/07 @19:59

Queen Latifah - Beautiful

Halle Berry - Pretty

Tyra - pretty

Naomi Campbell - Beautiful

by: Anonymous reply 161 10/09/07 @20:34

I am a bit surprised not to see Audrey Hepburn mentioned more often. To me she was the epitome of womanly grace and beauty. Sorry to sound trite, but it came from within as well as from her physical appearance.

Barbara Stanwyck is an example of someone who started out attractive and grew to be beautiful as she aged.

by: Anonymous reply 162 10/09/07 @20:43

Because Audrey, from a strictly physical POV, wasn't as beautiful as the others mentioned here. She did have grace, elegance and style that went on forever.

Probably the most charismatic actress ever to appear in films. So many other beauties appear flat on film compared her.

I had a forgetten about Maria Feliz and, yes, Uma Thurman was impossibly beautiful in her early twenties.

Here's another blonde beauty - Cybill Shepard, eary 70s.

by: Anonymous reply 163 10/10/07 @02:51

Halle Berry - Pretty

Iman - Beautiful

by: Anonymous reply 164 10/10/07 @12:30

Johnny Depp. He was Botticelli beautiful when he was younger, but at 44 he is still head-turning, drop-dead gorgeous and in many ways more attractive as his acting has gained power and depth. It's almost unfair.

by: Anonymous reply 165 10/11/07 @02:49

Zhang Ziyi - pretty (very)

Maggie Cheung - beautiful

Gong Li - man

I agree with those who said that Natalie Portman went from beautiful to pretty. In "The Professional" (which btw was kind of creepy) she was a very beautiful little girl. Now, still very pretty but not the same as before. Kind of like Brooke Shields.

by: Anonymous reply 166 10/11/07 @03:26

Isabella Rossellini

Catherine Deneuve

Isabella Adjani

Audrey Hepburn

Are all beautiful, because they are/were elegant and they age/aged well.

Beyonce, J.Lo., Brooke Shields and co. are not beautiful, but pretty.

by: Anonymous reply 167 11/12/07 @08:00

Kate Winslet is pretty and she's becoming elegant.

Love her in the Trésor de Lancôme ad.

She breaks my heart everytime she shows passion and desire.

Give her that fucking Oscar already!

by: Anonymous reply 168 11/12/07 @09:57

Cindy Crawford is pretty.
Christy Turlington is beautiful.
For me, beautiful includes a certain elegance
r28, you nailed it.

Christy is for the upperclass man who enjoys great wine and food.

Cindy is more like the poor/working mans beauty ideal who enjoys junkfood.

by: Anonymous reply 169 11/12/07 @10:03

I am beauiful and Brad Pitt is pretty.

by: Anonymous reply 170 11/12/07 @16:02

Hayden Christensen seems beautiful to me, but not pretty.

by: Anonymous reply 171 11/12/07 @16:38

Minnie Driver is neither.

by: Anonymous reply 172 11/12/07 @17:19

Nobody's mentioned Suzy Parker...

and Capucine!!

by: Anonymous reply 173 11/12/07 @18:23

It's amazing how many of the chicks here are lezes.

by: Delores Del Rio reply 174 11/12/07 @19:49

Another vote for Kate Winslet.

Love her and can look at her all day without blinking.

by: Yes, I'm a lezzie. reply 175 11/13/07 @12:47

Elizabeth Taylor.

Beautiful. No one compares to her beauty. Love her.

see link

by: Anonymous reply 176 12/21/07 @14:51

Angelina Jolie beautiful, Reese Witherspoon pretty.

Angelina is beautiful.

Reese - huge forehead, thin lips, deformed chin, ugly smile. Not pretty.

by: Anonymous reply 177 12/21/07 @16:47

Liv Tyler - beautiful.

by: Anonymous reply 178 12/21/07 @16:51

I agree with R177. I'm am so sick of being told Hilary Swank, Jennifer Garner and Reese Witherspoon are pretty leading ladies. They are all fug.

RE: Men: Your hair history?

My hair history roughly parallels that of the British Empire.

For a while, my hair was the most spectacular on the planet. Then it began a long, slow decline. And bit by bit, it simply fell away.

What's left is best described as a loose collection of former dependents which graciously cling to a popular, but aging, queen.

RE: Is Matthew Broderick gay?

Because he is cute? You must be writing from some way back time in the 1980s. Are you wearing shoulder pads? How big is your hair? What color are your leg warmers? Believe it or not, Pat Benatar and Cindy Lauper or no longer big stars. And Madonna is British. But not for long.

In major sweaty weather, I've rolled up cotton washcloths under my breasts, in my bra, to keep the bra more dry. I generally wear light, long pants, or cotton shorts. A "medicated" powder (sort of camphor smelling) is helpful, especially if anything starts feeling rash-y.
