• He's gay. He's also an actor who wants audiences to find him believable as a straight man, especially as a romantic leading man. A lot of people, the vast majority, have a hard time suspending their disbelief if they know that in reality an actor is gay. As an earlier poster said, "This is not rocket science." Actors stay in the closet to protect themselves -- not just their livelihood but their very ability to work effectively. Acting is basically pretending, and if a giant part of your audience can't or won't buy what your selling, you might as well give up. I guess that's why I don't find Kevin Spacey as despicable as everyone else here does. If young gay men need good gay role models, and they do, let them find those role models among athletes, lawyers, doctors, politicians, writers, musicians -- individuals whose life's work doesn't depend on pretending to be someone else. And to those who say that gay actors can always take character parts that don't require any accommodation to a public's prejudices, I say that gay actors have just as much of a right to be stars as straight actors.
