Neil Patrick Harris Slams Eric Braeden On Twitter Over Botched ''HIMYM'' Appearance

It's fair to say Neil Patrick Harris and Eric Braeden won't be exchanging gifts this holiday season. The How I Met Your Mother star blasted the Young and the Restless veteran on Twitter today for allegedly failing to honor a commitment to appear on the CBS sitcom. "Eric Braeden is a D-Bag," Harris tweeted. "He agreed to a cameo as Robin's dad, then last night he bailed, saying the part wasn't 'substantial' enough." In a follow-up tweet, Harris announced that the role had been recast with Twin Peaks and Reaper alum Ray Wise. "[Ray] is a fantastic actor who makes any part 'substantial'. Super excited to welcome him to the family!" Braeden first appeared as Robin's alpha male dad in November 2008. In an interview with TVGuide.com at the time, he called the cast of HIMYM one of "the most wonderful groups of people I have ever met. It was the warmest set I've been on since Mary Tyler Moore." Calls to Braeden's rep have not yet been returned.

Wow. Braeden has a rep for being an asshole, but he must really be one. That's kind of out of character for NPH.

by Anonymousreply 1December 17, 2010 6:22 PM

Ray Wise could wipe the floor with Eric Braeden. Ray is wonderful!

by Anonymousreply 2December 17, 2010 6:26 PM

Why would a soap star pass up the opportunity to broaden thei audience? Why didn't he turn down his part in 'Titanic' if he only accepts substantial roles?

Melody Thomas Scott is set to appear on 'Castle' next month...FYI.

by Anonymousreply 3December 17, 2010 6:36 PM

Whenever Braeden mumbles through that dying show of his, all action comes to a complete stop. During confrontations we're stuck watching him stare down his mustache at his opponent, waiting for him to spout the next line. In casual scenes he rarely makes eye contact with other actors, essaying his lines while reading a letter, opening an envelope, or pouring a drink. Most scenes end with a close-up on him. It's all about Mr. Mumbles winning over the bad guys, the good guys, even the government.

Check out the comments on TMZ's story. Can you guess how they'd react to a gay man dissing a soap star?

Woah. %0D %0D Homophobia is alive and well at TMZ

by Anonymousreply 6December 17, 2010 9:06 PM

NPH has just issued an apology

"Now I feel bad for the D-bag comment," he wrote. "Don't know the guy personally. I'm just fiercely protective of our show."

by Anonymousreply 7December 17, 2010 9:18 PM

NPH's PR people got to him PRONTO to issue the new tweet. The last thing NPH needs is a war of words with anybody right now.

Blame it on being sleep-deprived; after all, with 2 new babies at home, and David always in the kitchen...

by Anonymousreply 8December 17, 2010 10:42 PM

Some remember Eric Braeden from the days when he was still Hans Gudagast, the hot young German actor.

by Anonymousreply 9December 17, 2010 10:55 PM

Twitter is a dream come true for us gossip hungry folks. Some celebs just post stuff without consulting their handlers first.

Ray Wise is such a great actor. Shame he's "second choice" for the guest role.

by Anonymousreply 10December 17, 2010 10:59 PM

Nobody at Y&R can stand him. When he stood firm against a salary decrease last year, several of his co-stars spoke out against him. He has a high Q rating. That's why he's still around.

by Anonymousreply 11December 17, 2010 11:02 PM

Eric Braeden told The Wrap regarding NPH: "What he needs is a little spanking."%0D %0D Am I the only one who finds that image really hot?!

Older vs. Younger

by Anonymousreply 14December 17, 2010 11:38 PM

[quote]"I've seen these young whippersnappers come and go. Most of them go," said Braeden, 69. "So he'd better save his money."

BWAH! That's fucking hysterical; he has two shows in syndication and a hugely famous name that gets him constant work. I can't even imagine the gambling addiction he'd have to have to blow the amount of money he's going to wind up with by the time he's 40, even if he stopped getting work outside of HIMYM tomorrow.

It's washed up soap stars who look down their noses at gigs that are too good for them who should save their money. What an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 15December 17, 2010 11:38 PM

So just in a couple of hours, Braeden has already given interviews to Entertainment Weekly, The Wrap and Deadline Hollywood about THIS? He's going to milk NPH's Twitter comment for all that it's worth.

by Anonymousreply 16December 17, 2010 11:43 PM

WHAT AH YOU TALKING ABOUT, YOU PUNK?!

by Anonymousreply 17December 17, 2010 11:50 PM

[quote]Braeden said he was looking forward to his appearance on the show, but learned just the day before he was to shoot his cameo that he would only have two lines. "I don't do two lines for anyone," he said.

What do you think a cameo IS, you D-bag?

by Anonymousreply 20December 17, 2010 11:55 PM

It was a classless thing for NPH to do, which is surprising because he's usually so classy.

Actors can turn down roles for many reasons. And the fact that the role is thought to be too small is certainly an acceptable reason for passing.

by Anonymousreply 21December 17, 2010 11:55 PM

I agree, R18 .

by Anonymousreply 22December 17, 2010 11:56 PM

I'm on NPH's side but I still endorse the other guy spanking him.

by Anonymousreply 23December 17, 2010 11:58 PM

NPH's hasty comment demonstrates the downside of web 2.0, but it also makes for great DL fodder. Where would we bitches be without Twitter, Facebook, blogs, and all other online sources of hasty, (passive)aggressive commentary?

[quote]Actors can turn down roles for many reasons. And the fact that the role is thought to be too small is certainly an acceptable reason for passing.

R21 clueless retard.

He TOOK the part, which was a cameo, saw that he only had a few lines and quit right before they were about to tape. Unprofessional to say the least.

by Anonymousreply 29December 18, 2010 2:17 AM

The best revenge would be to make the cameo character a regular guest character.

by Anonymousreply 30December 18, 2010 2:25 AM

by Anonymousreply 31December 18, 2010 3:07 AM

Man, those comments at the TMZ site are pretty nasty. Who are they anyway? By which I mean what kind of people follow TMZ?

I've seen the show a few times and found it entertaining. The only time I look at it online is when someone here has linked it in a thread.

by Anonymousreply 33December 18, 2010 5:06 AM

by Anonymousreply 34December 18, 2010 5:10 AM

A little tidbit of gossip: Eric Braeden did some commercials in Canada about 5-6 years ago for a low end chain of supermarkets. My partner worked on that commercial and says that Braeden demanded a private jet and showed up for the shoot with two fluffers (female).

by Anonymousreply 35December 18, 2010 5:11 AM

Thanks, R33! :)%0D %0D %0D Peter Bergman would have played the part.

by Anonymousreply 36December 18, 2010 5:45 AM

Eric Braedan better save his own money up, a much better actor Michael Mulney is playing his son on Y&R and completely stealing the show. The rating go down whenever he's not on. He is the new antagonist of the show and is riveting IMO. It's time to get rid of old Eric, and take Melody off too, they are so tiresome.

by Anonymousreply 41December 18, 2010 1:20 PM

Can't Neil Patrick Harris just go away already?

I have no idea who the soap guy is, but NPH's head has ballooned to the size of a small planet. He's a fucking actor on the show, not the person directing or producing.

And yeah, I say that as a gay guy. I don't care if the guy's gay, I just want him to disappear back into obscurity.

by Anonymousreply 42December 18, 2010 2:08 PM

by Anonymousreply 43December 18, 2010 2:14 PM

by Anonymousreply 44December 18, 2010 2:15 PM

I can't believe anyone would think Braeden is a good actor, or actually want to watch him. He is the sole reason why I could never get into Y&R. Well, there were a ton of other reasons, but if I had to watch him all the time, I think I'd rather gouge my eyes out and stick hot pokers in my ears.

by Anonymousreply 45December 18, 2010 2:21 PM

I thought it was amusing when he refused to take a pay cut and left the show. He gave countless interviews, badmouthing Y&R and Sony. But Y&R/Sony called his bluff. When they put out word that they were talking to William Devane and Peter Strauss, Braeden came running back to the show (within 2 days!) and accepted the pay cut (from $1.5 million to $1 million).

Quick "Y&R" writers--put all this in the show. Have NPH come on as an old /lover/ally of Adam who plots to crush Victor for hurting his man. The ratings would skyrocket and it would be good stunt-casting (unlike that Sean Young playing crazy in yet-another-decade plotline that sucked).

by Anonymousreply 59December 19, 2010 5:12 AM

Right, as if Neil would lower himself to appear on a soap!

by Anonymousreply 60December 19, 2010 5:19 AM

NPH should know better. He could have criticized virtually anyone, but once you start criticizing a soap veteran, the bigots (aka soap watchers) come out in full force to defend their POS star.

Eric Braeden is an awful actor, and HIMYM is better off without him, but for some reason, despite his awful character onscreen, his awful portrayal of said character, and his awful personality offscreen, he's beloved by the non-thinking soap watchers. I just don't get it. Given that he's gay, it's the ultimate chance to spew a little anti-gay hate at the same time.

(By the way, you can watch soaps and not be one of these foaming-at-the-mouth freaks...I myself watch OLTL, but I'm not going to get into an argument over someone who disses Robin Strasser...)

by Anonymousreply 66December 19, 2010 2:15 PM

My sad admission of the day: I've been watching The Young and the Restless since I was a toddler and I'm a fan to this day (at 30). I can't stand the character of Victor Newman (who seems to be working with the deranged Skye to come between Sharon and Adam), and Eric Braeden is a horrible, horrible actor. I get excited whenever his character almost dies (which is every other year) or contract negotiations get tense.

Yes, they do, R68!

Goddamn, do a Google search with the key words "actor or actress dropped out." Actors drop out of movies with multi-million dollar budgets ALL THE TIME. I'm not a fan of Eric Braeden, but he fucking dropped out of filming a part where he would've had a grand total of 2 lines (probably one by the time the episode aired).

Dear there is a difference between dropping out of a film several months before its starts to shoot and dropping out SEVERAL HOURS before you are supposed to shoot. Are you really that dense? He was shooting a CAMEO, of course he had very few lines that is what a cameo is.

by Anonymousreply 71December 19, 2010 3:11 PM

r69, they cancel or drop out in pre-production as in before time to actually shoot. Its a big difference to cancel right as the episode is shooting, because there is no time/people scheduled to find a replacement so you gotta scramble or call in a favor.

by Anonymousreply 72December 19, 2010 3:15 PM

NPH came out like a douchebag in this whole thing.

Something like this inclines me to believe the rumors that he's an insufferable prick in real life.

I've said it before: Twitter is the devil. For celebrities, it has done nothing but expose us to how vapid and uneducated most of them really are.

How does that make it the devil? It's one of my favorite things about Twitter.

by Anonymousreply 74December 19, 2010 3:44 PM

I work in the biz and think NPH made a mistake.

It's not uncommon to cast guest stars at the very last minute on episodics. Sometimes scripts change, sometimes no script is even written until the very last minute.

Every actor has a right to look at the material before they agree to do a role. I'm assuming that Braeden (or his agents) agreed to do the gig without a script being available... agreed with conditions: that he could work around his soap schedule and that he was OK with the script. My understanding is that Braeden played the role previously. They called his agents to ask him to reprieve the role. I seriously doubt the casting director knew that the role consisted of 2 lines -- they would have given the agent the heads up on that, if they'd known. Agents checked availability, checked with Braeden, and then gave a provisional 'yes.' Script comes out, emailed to Braeden directly, I presume. Braeden sees it's 2 lines and freaks. Calls agent, says, "I'm not doing a 2 line role." Agent calls CD and refuses to close the deal.

This sort of thing happens all the time. Casting directors have hundreds of names of great actors they can go to at the last second. Ray Wise is a very good actor, probably better than Braeden. HIMYM did not suffer in the slightest.

NPH should have kept his mouth shut.

by Anonymousreply 75December 19, 2010 5:11 PM

"No honey actors don't drop out and cancel at the last minute all the time."%0D %0D Yes they do, Miss Burtka. Only you don't hear about it because most stars have the common sense not to air such petty grievences all over the web.%0D %0D %0D %0D

A friend worked on the show this year and had a lot of scenes with Braeden. He never says his lines and always has to have the last word. He also won't allow Victor to lose anything, no matter what is written, so the writers have pretty much given up. If anyone tries to improvise (which my friend did) he gets VERY angry. He expects lines to be fed to him as written and then he says whatever he wants.

Additionally, he's raking in tons of money for the syndication of both Doogie and HIMYM, and paychecks and residuals from all the other work he gets. He doesn't do many endorsements because he doesn't need to, not because he couldn't get them if he wanted to.

by Anonymousreply 89December 20, 2010 12:28 AM

It's not the first time Braeden's played the part. If he didn't want a recurring role (however small) on a hit sitcom, then he should have been happy with just playing (being?) the bully on one of the higher-rated remaining soaps, especially at an age when most people are retiring.

Was NPH out of line with his tweet? Maybe. But Braeden was potentially in breach of a contract, and is generally viewed as an egomaniacal douche in the industry, so his unprofessional behaviour shouldn't go unchecked, even if only outside his usual turf.

by Anonymousreply 90December 20, 2010 12:42 AM

There seems to be a whole lot of turmoil in Soapland these days. Cancellations, firings, replacing show-runners, veering them to a younger audience by replacing talented veterans with hot yet *horrible* newbies. Add to this a declining audience and you have to wonder if there will even be a need for a Daytime Emmys in the next few years, much less a Soap Opera Digest.

You're crazy, r94. He was the best part of that awful movie. And even though HIMYM isn't the greatest show out there, he's the only memborable part of that show and believable as a straight womanizer to everyone but you.

Eric Braeden has always come accross as a horrible person. NPH seems like a hard working guy who is professional and expects that of others.

by Anonymousreply 101July 28, 2012 12:59 PM

Braeden sounds like a total douchebag. Neil Patrick Harris may just be approaching 40 but he's been in the business for what, close to 30 years? He's as much a veteran as this Braeden is.

Eric Braden is a Nazi Asshole always has been everyone hates him. He blackmailed and framed Michael Muhney off The Young and the Restless with that Slut Hunter King's false accusation. Hunter King is a new slutty want to be loser and horrible actress who along with the Nazi Eric Braeden who has a horrible hateful reputation, said nothing but slanderous lies against Michael Muhney. We the Fans will get the last laugh as we know the truth and The Young and the Restless will be Boycotted after 1/30/14. Screw you Victor and ugly face Hunter. Adam has a bigger fan base than the 2 of you whack jobs combined.

F & F crazy R103.

by Anonymousreply 104January 21, 2014 2:15 AM

Old man Braeden could take Harris with one hand tied behind his back.

by Anonymousreply 105January 21, 2014 2:47 AM

This brought a bunch of publicity to both shows, that equals "It's a good thing".

by Anonymousreply 106January 21, 2014 3:14 AM

bump

by Anonymousreply 107July 11, 2014 4:21 PM

I think he might be more interested in slamming or being slammed by the guy hired to play Avery's ex-husband...Scott Elrod.

Neil is awesome when he's angry

by Anonymousreply 109July 6, 2016 10:45 PM

He should've been better, but next to Neil it's hard not to look second rate.

by Anonymousreply 110November 16, 2016 3:29 AM

It's awful when people ruin TV shows like Pinkie Lee ruined Happy Days when she tried to be Fonzie's girlfriend.

by Anonymousreply 111November 16, 2016 8:27 AM

Neil is so "in your face"

by Anonymousreply 112February 2, 2017 11:06 AM

So thread bumping troll, this morning you searched for NPH and flooded DL with a shitload of them. You must be very proud.

by Anonymousreply 113February 2, 2017 11:26 AM

by Anonymousreply 114October 13, 2017 10:38 AM
