It's fair to say Neil Patrick Harris and Eric Braeden won't be exchanging gifts this holiday season. The How I Met Your Mother star blasted the Young and the Restless veteran on Twitter today for allegedly failing to honor a commitment to appear on the CBS sitcom. "Eric Braeden is a D-Bag," Harris tweeted. "He agreed to a cameo as Robin's dad, then last night he bailed, saying the part wasn't 'substantial' enough." In a follow-up tweet, Harris announced that the role had been recast with Twin Peaks and Reaper alum Ray Wise. "[Ray] is a fantastic actor who makes any part 'substantial'. Super excited to welcome him to the family!" Braeden first appeared as Robin's alpha male dad in November 2008. In an interview with TVGuide.com at the time, he called the cast of HIMYM one of "the most wonderful groups of people I have ever met. It was the warmest set I've been on since Mary Tyler Moore." Calls to Braeden's rep have not yet been returned.

Wow. Braeden has a rep for being an asshole, but he must really be one. That's kind of out of character for NPH.

Ray Wise could wipe the floor with Eric Braeden. Ray is wonderful!

Why would a soap star pass up the opportunity to broaden thei audience? Why didn't he turn down his part in 'Titanic' if he only accepts substantial roles?
Melody Thomas Scott is set to appear on 'Castle' next month...FYI.

Whenever Braeden mumbles through that dying show of his, all action comes to a complete stop. During confrontations we're stuck watching him stare down his mustache at his opponent, waiting for him to spout the next line. In casual scenes he rarely makes eye contact with other actors, essaying his lines while reading a letter, opening an envelope, or pouring a drink. Most scenes end with a close-up on him. It's all about Mr. Mumbles winning over the bad guys, the good guys, even the government.

Nobody at Y&R can stand him. When he stood firm against a salary decrease last year, several of his co-stars spoke out against him. He has a high Q rating. That's why he's still around.

BWAH! That's fucking hysterical; he has two shows in syndication and a hugely famous name that gets him constant work. I can't even imagine the gambling addiction he'd have to have to blow the amount of money he's going to wind up with by the time he's 40, even if he stopped getting work outside of HIMYM tomorrow.
It's washed up soap stars who look down their noses at gigs that are too good for them who should save their money. What an idiot.

NPH should know better. He could have criticized virtually anyone, but once you start criticizing a soap veteran, the bigots (aka soap watchers) come out in full force to defend their POS star.
Eric Braeden is an awful actor, and HIMYM is better off without him, but for some reason, despite his awful character onscreen, his awful portrayal of said character, and his awful personality offscreen, he's beloved by the non-thinking soap watchers. I just don't get it. Given that he's gay, it's the ultimate chance to spew a little anti-gay hate at the same time.

Dear there is a difference between dropping out of a film several months before its starts to shoot and dropping out SEVERAL HOURS before you are supposed to shoot. Are you really that dense? He was shooting a CAMEO, of course he had very few lines that is what a cameo is.

I work in the biz and think NPH made a mistake.
It's not uncommon to cast guest stars at the very last minute on episodics. Sometimes scripts change, sometimes no script is even written until the very last minute.
Every actor has a right to look at the material before they agree to do a role. I'm assuming that Braeden (or his agents) agreed to do the gig without a script being available... agreed with conditions: that he could work around his soap schedule and that he was OK with the script. My understanding is that Braeden played the role previously. They called his agents to ask him to reprieve the role. I seriously doubt the casting director knew that the role consisted of 2 lines -- they would have given the agent the heads up on that, if they'd known. Agents checked availability, checked with Braeden, and then gave a provisional 'yes.' Script comes out, emailed to Braeden directly, I presume. Braeden sees it's 2 lines and freaks. Calls agent, says, "I'm not doing a 2 line role." Agent calls CD and refuses to close the deal.
This sort of thing happens all the time. Casting directors have hundreds of names of great actors they can go to at the last second. Ray Wise is a very good actor, probably better than Braeden. HIMYM did not suffer in the slightest.
NPH should have kept his mouth shut.

A friend worked on the show this year and had a lot of scenes with Braeden. He never says his lines and always has to have the last word. He also won't allow Victor to lose anything, no matter what is written, so the writers have pretty much given up. If anyone tries to improvise (which my friend did) he gets VERY angry. by Anonymous | reply 89 | December 20, 2010 12:28 AM |
It's not the first time Braeden's played the part. If he didn't want a recurring role (however small) on a hit sitcom, then he should have been happy with just playing (being?) the bully on one of the higher-rated remaining soaps, especially at an age when most people are retiring.
Was NPH out of line with his tweet? Maybe. But Braeden was potentially in breach of a contract, and is generally viewed as an egomaniacal douche in the industry, so his unprofessional behaviour shouldn't go unchecked, even if only outside his usual turf.

There seems to be a whole lot of turmoil in Soapland these days. Cancellations, firings, replacing show-runners, veering them to a younger audience by replacing talented veterans with hot yet *horrible* newbies. Add to this a declining audience and you have to wonder if there will even be a need for a Daytime Emmys in the next few years, much less a Soap Opera Digest.

You're crazy, r94. He was the best part of that awful movie. And even though HIMYM isn't the greatest show out there, he's the only memborable part of that show and believable as a straight womanizer to everyone but you.

Eric Braeden has always come accross as a horrible person. NPH seems like a hard working guy who is professional and expects that of others.

Braeden sounds like a total douchebag. Neil Patrick Harris may just be approaching 40 but he's been in the business for what, close to 30 years? He's as much a veteran as this Braeden is.

Eric Braden is a Nazi Asshole always has been everyone hates him. He blackmailed and framed Michael Muhney off The Young and the Restless with that Slut Hunter King's false accusation. Hunter King is a new slutty want to be loser and horrible actress who along with the Nazi Eric Braeden who has a horrible hateful reputation, said nothing but slanderous lies against Michael Muhney. We the Fans will get the last laugh as we know the truth and The Young and the Restless will be Boycotted after 1/30/14. Screw you Victor and ugly face Hunter. Adam has a bigger fan base than the 2 of you whack jobs combined.

This brought a bunch of publicity to both shows, that equals "It's a good thing".

I think he might be more interested in slamming or being slammed by the guy hired to play Avery's ex-husband...Scott Elrod.

Neil is awesome when he's angry

He should've been better, but next to Neil it's hard not to look second rate.

It's awful when people ruin TV shows like Pinkie Lee ruined Happy Days when she tried to be Fonzie's girlfriend.
