Run for your Life. Timeless.
Well I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or I won't know where I am
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end'a little girl
Well you know that I'm a wicked guy
And I was born with a jealous mind
And I can't spend my whole life
Trying just to make you toe the line
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end'a little girl
Let this be a sermon
I mean everything I've said
Baby, I'm determined
And I'd rather see you dead
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end'a little girl
I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or you won't know where I am
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man

Can someone summarize the musical trends of each decade?
I thought that the 60s had musicians straying from sappy themed songs and being more experimental with newer musical theories (use of the greek keys instead of the normal major and minor ones), more syncopated rhythms, more profound themes, mix of some orchestration with more folksy type instruments and more grittier soul type of musical forms as well.
The 70s was more experimental in some ends (glamour rock, future rock, funk, fusions, etc.) and more simple in other generes (singer-songwriter stuff). Orchestration was more limited while synthesizers slowly emerged and with it new genres (disco). Themes became more varied and exploratory with the rise of other social issues in society (gay movements, women's rights, black-power, etc.)
80s there was some nostalgia in the music (50s and 60s centric) as was the trend all throughout at the time. Newer genre and hybrids of genres emerged with the widespread use of technology and synthesizers. Rock, particularly hard-rock became prominent, while soul virtually disappeared while hip hop became popular, again due to the rise of technology and synthesizers. Musicality became less sophisticated as the music industry focused more on sales than artistry.
90s - I dunno yet

I'll attempt the 90s:
The beginning of the 90s was about pseudo R&B (back when R&B was fun to listen to), which transitioned to the angry early to mid-90s (Alanis, Nirvana, etc). The end of the 90s marked the rise of the boy/girl band, and the more bubble-gummy pop, like Britney, The Spice Girls, etc.
The mid 90s remain my favorite musical period.

And R121, in turn, I'm in love with you. And with Sarah. Listening to it now is meta-nostalgia... sentiment for a 1990 tune that was a pure homage to bandstand 60s.
This is odd, but I'll go with the current reigning #1: Firework, by Katy Perry. It's an anthem: extremely well crafted in melody and lyrics, carries a positive message, w/ great video to match. Today's kids will be dancing and singing along to it decades from now, the way my generation does to Holiday or Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. Katy has sort of annoyed me up to now, but with this song... well done!

p.s. I want to clarify re: "Firework" (my entry at R136).
It's not really my kind of pop song. But I was out at a club last weekend in another city, on vacation, and when that song came on, it really kicked the room into motion and joy. Then I learned (had no idea) that it is #1. So I nominated it based on today's external evidence, more than personal taste. And yeah, the video does tug at the heart.
From my generation (80s music) I'll nominate Careless Whisper, Boys of Summer, and Ain't Nobody.

Is "Firework" the one that goes: "You're hot then you're cold.."
by Anonymous | reply 139 | December 22, 2010 2:02 PM |
No... it's brand new, it's the one that goes "just own the night, like the 4th of July - baby, you're a firework"
Here, I can't help being evangelistic about the video. There's a sweet gay-boy first-kiss moment, halfway into it.

I never figured out why "If She Knew What She Wants" wasn't the Bangles' signature hit - it had that beautiful sunlight-on-water 1960s harmony, and the girls (besides Susanna Hoffs) were rocking the Dusty Springfield look.
Also: why isn't this a lesbian favorite? It was written by a man lamenting a fickle girl. Sung by a woman, the chorus "If she knew what she wants, I'd be givin' it to her" takes on a whole dyketastic meaning.

"Don't Leave Me This Way" or "I Love the Nightlife" for pop radio disco '70s.
Otis Redding: "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" (mellow mid '60s)
Tommy James and the Shondells: Crimson & Clover (end of the 60's, tambourines, waah-waah, and overall psychedelic effect)

When Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys first heard "Be My Baby" by the Ronettes he ran out and bought it and listened to it 100 times in a row.
He was obsessed with it.
He thought it was the perfect pop song.
And then he wrote the Beach Boys answer to it.
"Don't Worry Baby"

Most of the #1 hits by the Supremes from the Flo Ballard years. Once the Motown whore-in-chief got her name added as the lead of the group, I guess it was all downhill from then on.

I second Ring Ring by Abba, and would like to add Freda Payne's (sp?) Band of Gold and Gladys Knight and the Pips' Midnight Train to Georgia.

Does anybody have a preference for singers of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"? Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell version is classic, and Dianna Ross' version is more dramatic and bold.
by Anonymous | reply 301 | May 7, 2015 6:53 AM |
There's a reason why Immaculate Collection is the biggest selling greatest hits album in history by a solo artist with over 30 million copies sold
I don't even like Madonna and yet I realize the greatness of that album
He'll I know women in their early 20s who have that album either digitally or physically
by Anonymous | reply 302 | May 7, 2015 6:57 AM |
There's a reason George Michael's Faith outsold the best that Michael Jackson and Madonna could put out there. Them and their armies of songwriters, musicians, and producers.
Faith was practically a one man project, other than the guy who picked out the leather jacket look.
4 number one hits? 6 top 5 hits?
Somebody figured out the perfect pop song model, and they didn't need any help. Single greatest pop genius in the 80s.

Personally I wouldn't include any slow song because to me a pop tune is one of those infectious confections that stick in your head and make you happy.
I would have a different category for pop ballads.

Jesus, just how old are most of you bitches? I've barely seen a song listed from the past 30 years. Although I do think "Little Lies" by Fleetwood Mac is brilliant.
For songs from this century, I recommend: "Burn" by Ellie Goulding. "Bad Romance" by GaGa, "Let There be Love" or "Candyman" by Christina Aguilera, "Single Ladies" or "Baby Boy" by Beyoncé.
And no matter how you feel about her, it's hard to deny the aural perfection of Britney Spears' "Toxic".
