Hollywood and Smoking

I have always thought that many hollywood "stars" use smoking as a way to keep their weight down. But you dont see a lot of pictures of them smoking. Is this intentional? %0D\ %0D\ For example I heard that Jennifer Anistion and Courteny Cox are heavy smokers and that is how they stay so skinny but wouldnt this show in their faces and skin?%0D\ %0D\ Who are the smokers in Hollywood that hide it to keep a good image?

• Almost all the actors in Hollywood are smokers. As you said, helps them keep the weight off. \ \ Publicists/managers discourage them from smoking in public as it''s bad for their image, especially those who strive for a clean cut image. However, for those wanting a bad boy image, smoking helps it. \ \ You''ll occassionally see photos taken on the set or in smoking patios at clubs. Magazines don''t tend to run them much these days. But go to some photo agency websites and you''ll find celeb smoking photos.

• Bowie had a heart attack in 2004 during the Reality tour - rest of tour was cancelled and he had, I think, a stent(?) put in whilst in Germany; the media were only informed after Bowie had been treated and had returned to his home in NY. Bowie is reported to have given up the ciggies since. Various sources say Bowie used to smoke between 60-80 a day. Now that's what I call smokin' !! x PS. It's a miracle he's still alive innit - what with the cocaine, drinking and smoking; rock and pop stars these days are pussys in comparison!

• I've smoked for 40 years. Not proud of the fact, but I've aged better than many of my friends. Stress test reveals 95% lung capacity. A very small percentage of smokers develop lung cancer from smoking cigarettes. It's in your genes.

• My sister is an actress (commercials and small bits in tv). She started smoking to lose weight, and is still at it over ten years later. She somehow manages to run marathons, and completed a triathlon last year. It amazes me. She wants to quit, but is afraid of gaining weight, so she never will.

• r8, you are completely naive. You would be surprised how many celebrities smoke. I remember finding it strange that Madonna - who was a notorious health and exercise nut - smoked for years before turning 40. No matter how health nutty they are, many celebrities smoke until about a certain age; when they turn middle age they get all desperate and try and kick their bad habits.

• George Clooney used to smoke. He said in January 2007 on Jay Leno that he quit as a New Years resolution. I never saw pics of him smoking before that.

• How you age is mostly genetic and also has a lot to do with how you take care of your skin. The sun will age you more quickly than smoking. As in everything, moderation folks!

• Any "smoking" depicted on film sets is for purposes of the role and not personal smoking. Also it is almost always a prop cigarette - actors often have to practice using these prop ciggies so there will necessarily be prop smoking between takes - hence photos that look like people are smoking. But smoking is otherwise not allowed on film sets in California. For quite a while there has been a lot of pressure on productions to delete any scenes with smoking. I think it's stupid and extreme since the reality is that people did smoke but many productions have acquiesced to pressure and ended up deleting smoking scenes from the final cut. Why is this thread back? Are there so few new threads that this is necessary?

• Your post is so bizarre and wrong R69 I'm not sure if it is supposed to be a joke. Anytime not sure why this old thread keeps getting bumped but yes a lot of actors smoke. And while smoking is certainly bad for you the idea that ages you so terribly is such a DL myth, as someone else in this thread talked about there are a multitude or other things such as genetics and taking care of your skin from the sun and eating well/being fit that have way more to do with how you age.

• Gwyneth Paltrow was a smoker. Don't know if she still does since her kids are older. She drinks alcohol too. Mostly Vodka. You want to look at the wages of all that abuse, remember poor Elizabeth Taylor, a heavy smoker. Yes she had health problems, but years of smoking and drinking to excess exacerbated her health problems. It did terrible things to her bones and her skin. She was shuffling along like a 90 yr old before she hit 70, and was wheel-chair bound and using oxygen by her mid 70's.
