I always wondered how Marty Ingles and Shirley Jones last as long as they have.

- I''m not sure if having an open marriage is what keeps it going. What seems to keep a lot of these marriages going is staying out of the spotlight, and not using your marriage for PR.\

Couples who mind their own business and remain in the background tend to be more stable - it''s those that become media whores that break up more quickly.

- Dr. House and his wife.
- R25 has it right. The low key couples are the ones who last. The ones out at premiers and photo ops constantly will be splitsville. Also, I heard some actor or actress, can''t remember which one, state that it''s better for actors to maintain relationships with someone who is not in acting themselves. Keeps them more level or something and not as likely to buy into their bullshit PR.

- Christopher and Georgina Walken
Still married. And Christopher is always true, in his fashion.
- I love CZ-J as an actress. She is still so beautiful I'd hit it and I'm gay.
But I love her even more as she allegedly got the best pre-nup ever.
Douglas is a serial cheater. He's also wildly wealthy, not so much from his own substantial earnings, but from the fortune his mother left him. He cheats, she gets zillions.
Mind you, she's worked all her life, so she's not a gold-digger. She even made ads for T-Mobile and Elizabeth Arden after her marriage to MD, when she didn't need the money. And the T-Mobile ads were at a time when American stars only shot commercials for the Japanese market, unseen by the US public.
Smart woman.

- Gorgeous Gregory Harrison. Married to wife Randi Oakes (CHiPs) for over 30 years. I still get hard just thinking about the opening credits of Trapper John, and a buck naked Gonzo Gates emerging from the shower. No wonder I have a locker room fetish.

- Ricky Gervaise has been with his partner Jane since 1983.

Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt -- not married, but they've been together for a long time
Pam Dawber and Mark Hamill
Ron Howard and whoever his wife is
Henry Winkler and whoever his wife is
- When there's a real disparity between the partners I suspect the one with less money, fame, whatever may not be willing to give up what they have so they put up with more. Denzel is a real horn dog but his wife is NOT walking away from that marriage. Same with some of those men married to relatively famous and well off actresses.
Not sure about the low key aspect being all that important. Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward were all over the place in the 1950s and 60s. I remember seeing pictures from a Life or Look photo spread on them - Paul cooking in the kitchen and Joanne tinkering around the house. Later, too, there was a feature on them with their children at their home in Connecticut. And they certainly went to their share of media and show biz events.
It's about the people not particularly the level of fame. Though 2 fairly equal celebs may have more independence and ability to walk away if the marriage goes south.
- [quote]Christopher and Georgina Walken
Still married. And Christopher is always true, in his fashion.
I heard he used to cheat on her. Not sure if that's still the case...
Willem Dafoe left his wife/partner of 25 something years, Elizabeth LeCompte, for a young woman a few years ago. It seems that his biggest regret about the whole thing is that he can't be part of the Wooster Group anymore.

- Howard Stern
- "When there's a real disparity between the partners I suspect the one with less money, fame, whatever may not be willing to give up what they have so they put up with more."
Absolutely. I'm more impressed by long lasting marriages where each party could walk away easily without the breakup causing a notable degradation in life style, wealth, privileges, etc.
- James Garner and wife....56 years.
- Good one, r63.
- Tom Baker (Doctor Who) has been marred to his 3rd wife since 1986.
- Ron Howard and his wife. They've been married for 37 years but met as teens so they've been together even longer really.
- Hasn't Howard Stern only been married for a few years? Or are you talking about his first marriage?
Someone just bumped the "V" thread to mention Stephen Collins ("7th Heaven") and Faye Grant ("V") are splitting after 20+ years of marriage. It always surprises me when people who have been married for most of their lives divorce when they're 60 or 70.
- R67 I read somewhere that Stephen Collins' wife was shocked when she found out that he had filed for divorce.
- It used to be rare, R67, but it's much more common today. The highest increase in the divorce rate today is among the older demographic.
People are living longer lives and many couples in their 70's and 80's today are willing to do things the previous generation wouldn't.

- For posters who say long standing marriages only last when both are allowed to "cheat", if they are "allowed" then it's not cheating. That's called an open marriage. Wish I had one..
- [quote]Hollywood marriages only seem to last when they are fake or when the husband and wife are allowed to cheat.
I know one of the couples listed and it isn't fake, and I don't believe there is cheating. It is possible for two people to take their vows seriously, and respect one another enough to keep it in their pants.
- Bump.
I like reading this thread every once in a while to see if any long-term marriages have hit the skids. I can't believe Melanie and Antonio are still together.

- John Travolta/Kelly Preston. This one definitely falls into the "allowing each other to cheat" category.
- Gary Collins & Mary Ann Mobley, 45 years.
- I'm back again to bump this thread in honor of Carla Tortelli's and Louie DePalma.
I did a quick read through... I think the only other long-term couple to hit the skids was from R36 - Lisa Whelchel ( if the rumors are true).
