Susan Saint James - what''s she up to?

Just saw her in early 80s film "How to Beat the High Cost of Living" w/Jane Curtin & Jessica Lange, she was so cute.

by Anonymousreply 61August 22, 2019 9:52 PM

She fell off the radar after her son was killed.

by Anonymousreply 1October 26, 2010 3:03 PM

My aunt worked in reception at a phen-fen clinic in Manhattan in the '90s. She said Susan and her daughter came in a few times and they were absolute sweethearts. They chatted with her and apparently Susan was pretty funny. It's probably one of the few positive stories she's ever told me about the place. The other ones involve her having to testify at the murder of the doctor there whose ex-girlfriend killed him because he was going to report their Medicaid fraud. Oh, and right after she had the good sense to get the fuck out of there, the place was set up with hidden cameras by the local news to prove that they were falsifying documents so that the gym they had could be paid for by insurance as 'physical therapy'. No wonder she decided to stick to her crappy retail job at a Queens Macy's since then.

by Anonymousreply 2October 26, 2010 3:31 PM

The last time I saw her was on an episode of Seinfeld. Whoever decided to cast her and Robert Wagner as Mickey's parents was a genius.

by Anonymousreply 3October 26, 2010 6:09 PM

NO, R3, that was Jill St. John. You're getting your saints mixed up.

by Anonymousreply 4October 26, 2010 6:13 PM

That was Jill St. John, r3. (Or were you joking?)%0D %0D Last time I saw Susan St. James was on "The Drew Carey Show" as Christa Miller's mom.

by Anonymousreply 5October 26, 2010 6:15 PM

She's married to Dick Ebersole (sp) and essentially quit the bus to raise her kids (post-Kate and Allie). Her husband and two sons were in a plane crash at Christmas time a few years ago, the youngest son died. She was on the Today Show a year or so ago discussing the event. She's very hippie-like holistic, earth mother these days. Nice lady, but in a bit of a bubble since the son died.

by Anonymousreply 6October 26, 2010 6:20 PM

Yup, R4 and R5 are correct. I had their names confused due to a brain freeze.

by Anonymousreply 7October 26, 2010 6:25 PM

She became a Christian like Jane Fonda after Kate & Allie. R6 is right that she pretty much retired. She did pop-up on The Drew Carey Show, but that was only so she could act alongside her niece who was one of the stars of the show.

by Anonymousreply 8October 26, 2010 6:37 PM

I don't think she became a fundamentalist like Jane Fonda. I heard she re-embraced her Catholic faith and is quite devout these days.

by Anonymousreply 9October 26, 2010 7:03 PM

I love that movie OP, it is stupid but fun.

by Anonymousreply 10October 26, 2010 7:14 PM

I bought a season 1 Kate & Allie DVD marked down to $3 at FYE. Enjoyed the show in its original run and thought I'd revisit it. I found it cringeworthy and unwatchable.

by Anonymousreply 11October 26, 2010 9:30 PM

"I heard she re-embraced her Catholic faith and is quite devout these days."

She went to a catholic girls high school in Rockford Illinois. Losing your youngest in a place crash might have something to do with that.

by Anonymousreply 12October 26, 2010 9:35 PM

I thought she was very pretty in Love At First Bite (that was Susan St. James wasn't it?).

by Anonymousreply 13October 26, 2010 9:47 PM

Didn't she and Ted Kennedy have a fling?

by Anonymousreply 14October 26, 2010 10:32 PM

Susan was always adorable onscreen and had that lovely throaty voice. She and Rock Hudson had great chemistry on MacMillan & Wife.

by Anonymousreply 15October 27, 2010 4:27 PM

I read that Rock Hudson loathed working with her on MacMillan & Wife. (Yeah, yeah, I know. This is some musty, moldy gossip. But I love 70s cop shows.) Anyway, the story I read was that she made outrageous demands when the show became a hit. She assumed that because "& Wife" was in the title of the show that she had some leverage. Apparently she didn't and they killed her character off.

by Anonymousreply 16October 27, 2010 4:37 PM

She's good in "Where Angels Go Trouble Follows." Has she ever done theater? She certainly would attract some fags if she did a Broadway show guest stint.

by Anonymousreply 17October 27, 2010 8:32 PM

Amy Heckerling is coming out with an update to "Love At First Bite" called "Vamps" starring Sigourney and Alicia Silverstone. It was shot in Detroit I believe, but is set in Manhattan.

by Anonymousreply 18October 27, 2010 8:33 PM

Re R5's reply, Saint James is Christa Miller's aunt.

by Anonymousreply 19October 27, 2010 8:38 PM

her neck in debt. Bitch ain't worked since I could breathe without nasal strips.

by Anonymousreply 20October 27, 2010 8:44 PM

She should play Susan's mother on "Desperate Housewives."

by Anonymousreply 21October 27, 2010 8:45 PM

She said that Rock Hudson was not gay and that the press made it all up to ruin him for not cow towing to the homosexual agenda.

by Anonymousreply 22February 25, 2015 6:18 PM

She's a big champion of Corita Kent's art. She did a documentary on the IHM sister/artist in the 90s.

by Anonymousreply 23February 25, 2015 6:43 PM

[quote]cow towing

by Anonymousreply 24February 25, 2015 7:09 PM

I don't recall that, R22.

Do you have anything more?

by Anonymousreply 25February 25, 2015 7:14 PM

Susan Saint James was in It Takes a Thief with Robert Wagner.

Jill St. John co-starred with Wagner in Hart to Hart.

by Anonymousreply 26February 25, 2015 7:20 PM

She is a major fundie who turned her life over to god

She is also a Conservative

by Anonymousreply 27February 25, 2015 8:11 PM

She was a guest star on MASH as a correspondent who had a fling with BJ.

by Anonymousreply 28February 25, 2015 9:31 PM

How To Beat The High Cost Of Living is an underrated masterpiece, up there with She Devil and Big Business.

by Anonymousreply 29February 25, 2015 9:35 PM

She appeared in A&E's Biography of Rock Hudson, and spoke highly of him.

by Anonymousreply 30February 25, 2015 9:38 PM

R27 is full of shit. She's still very liberal as her twitter feed indicates.

Her gay son Charlie bearded for Maria Sharapova. He has a serious case of gay face and an even worse case of gay voice.com

by Anonymousreply 32February 25, 2015 9:53 PM

[quote]Her gay son Charlie bearded for Maria Sharapova

He's with Britney Spears now.

by Anonymousreply 33February 25, 2015 9:55 PM

I think she first surfaced playing Peggy Maxwell in a TV show called "The Name of the Game". The show provided episodes focused on 3 men involved in a magazine empire. Robert Stack and Anthony Franciosa were reporters (for Crime and People Magazines) and Gene Barry played Glenn Howard, owner of the magazines.

The stories rotated among the 3 stars. SSJ appeared occasionally early on and then eventually became the only cast member who appeared in episodes for all of the 3 stars.

You can find the old episodes late at night (on COZI-TV I think). I really liked SSJ when the show first aired, but watching the old episodes, the 3 main actors are still fine to watch but SSJ is really annoying now.

The same is true with MacMillan & Wife. Rock Hudson's performances still hold up, while SSJ is annoying.

by Anonymousreply 34February 25, 2015 10:59 PM

Her daughter got fired from Drew Carey.

by Anonymousreply 35February 26, 2015 7:26 PM

[quote]I think she first surfaced playing Peggy Maxwell in a TV show called "The Name of the Game"

This is correct. She was one of the last of the Universal contract players.

[quote]Her daughter got fired from Drew Carey.

Are you referring to Christa Miller (from "Cougar Town"?) She's her niece, not her daughter.

by Anonymousreply 36February 26, 2015 7:29 PM

Her daughter QUIT to go on the show Scrubs. She wasn't fired. Miller said she was not sticking around on a dying show when she had the chance to star in a classic.

by Anonymousreply 37February 26, 2015 7:40 PM

1. NOT her daughter.

2. Her husband is the exec producer/creator of both "Scrubs" and "Cougar Town."

by Anonymousreply 38February 26, 2015 8:46 PM

[quote] Her husband is the exec producer/creator of both "Scrubs" and "Cougar Town."

So your saying Christa Miller slept with the producer to get roles on both shows?

by Anonymousreply 39February 26, 2015 8:49 PM

A haggard veteran waitress of the Universal commissary (think Anita Page near the end)told us stories about things that went on at Universal decades ago.

She loved to dish Susan St James for being a HIPPY,smoking weed outside her trailer, sunbathing topless as she waved to the passing tour bus, etc.

by Anonymousreply 40February 26, 2015 8:59 PM

[quote]So your saying

Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 41February 26, 2015 9:20 PM

They're playing old MAWs lately where I live. OMG - the clothes they put her in! Some were hideous, some were really great. And the nearly invisible, drawn-on eyebrows!

The show itself looks so cheesy and low-budget now.

by Anonymousreply 42February 26, 2015 9:44 PM

It was the '70s. I can always identify shows from that decade by the hideous clothes.

by Anonymousreply 43February 26, 2015 9:55 PM

I used to love MAW and SSJ. I tried watching it on Netflix and her character was so irritating. She was written almost like she was retarded.

by Anonymousreply 44February 26, 2015 10:52 PM

[quote]She was written almost like she was retarded.

Well, since she had no clue her husband was gay, that's kind of a given.

Susan Saint James was reported to be found dead.

by Anonymousreply 47April 20, 2015 1:59 PM

Susan is dreading her son Charlie possibly marrying girlfriend Britney Spears.

by Anonymousreply 48April 20, 2015 2:11 PM

Lucie Arnaz has said that she's always mistaken for Susan St. James.

by Anonymousreply 49April 20, 2015 2:12 PM

Susan was involved in the black panther movement.

by Anonymousreply 50May 13, 2016 3:10 PM

I thought it was so weird how they dealt with Sally/Susan St. James on "McMillan and Wife." Susan kept getting pregnant, so Sally spent at least 1/3 of the series heavily pregnant. Rather than hiding it, they presented Sally as being pregnant and it was even a plot point of at least one episode in which Sally is being rushed to the hospital due to some sort of pregnancy-related complication. She and Mac discussed the baby and how their lives would change. Bickered over possible names, etc.

Then Sally suddenly wasn't pregnant anymore and the baby was never discussed again, as far as I could tell. Shortly thereafter, Sally herself disappeared and the show was suddenly "McMillan." It was like the producers thought their viewers had the attention/memory span of goldfish.

by Anonymousreply 51May 13, 2016 3:27 PM

She was always a fame whore who was severely bitter that her co-stars Jane Curtain and Rock Hudson outshone her in every scene and even her niece was able to achieve more fame than her second run status.

Are there any lesbian rumours about her?

I just finished watching the entire Kate & Allie series, I'd never watched it before and didn't even know who Susan Saint James was, and I just thought she pinged big time. I know she's married and has/had 5 kids but that doesn't mean anything. Her husband is a powerful unattractive, conservative man so she could have married him to further her career. Meredith Baxter had 5 kids but struggled with her sexuality the whole time she was married. Susan just seems like that kind of woman, who married and had a bunch of kids because that was the thing to do. Everything about her screams closeted lez or bi. Even on Kate & Allie she seems like she loves Allie more than Allie loves her. She refers to her often as "my girlfriend". The whole sitcom is so gay it's funny they tried to hide it.

by Anonymousreply 54August 17, 2019 5:51 PM

[quote] She became a Christian like Jane Fonda after Kate & Allie.

When was Jane Fonda on Kate & Allie? I’ve watched every episode. And what happened on the set of Kate & Allie that caused Jane to turn to Christianity?

by Anonymousreply 55August 17, 2019 6:21 PM

R55, Jane didn't turn to Christianity, Susan did.

by Anonymousreply 56August 17, 2019 9:08 PM

I always get her mixed up with Buffy Marie Saint.

by Anonymousreply 57August 17, 2019 9:42 PM

R54, I always thought that, too. I mean, even in “Love At First Bite”. I didn’t understand why those two guys were in love with her. Didn’t they know?

by Anonymousreply 58August 17, 2019 9:49 PM

Her husband has to be loaded. She doesn't have to work.

by Anonymousreply 59August 17, 2019 10:37 PM

Yeah, she's married to Dick Ebersol, a big NBC executive.

Why did she change her name to Saint James?

by Anonymousreply 60August 18, 2019 3:09 PM

What makes you think she's a lady lover R58? Mannerisms? A certain vibe?
