Iowa State, the high school after high school.

"Today, I'd like to tell you about several women I know very well....and why I'm being fired."

I agree the shorts are the absolute best (Mr. B Natural), of course, but also "Once Upon A Honeymoon" which has a somewhat nebulous message about how you can use your telephone as part of you interior decorating scheme--but it does contain a a catchy little song--"Out of this World" where a demon and an angel battle for the soul of a wholesale bread deliveryman--"But why does the strip club need bread?"--and "21st Century Calling" about a pair of Aryan youth visiting the Bell Labs exhibit at the Seattle World's Fair and getting to see stuff that was groundbreaking at the time, like speed-dial, call-forwarding, call-waiting, touch-tone dialing, and three-way calling.

Favorite whole movies include beach blanket film "Catalina Caper" (with both a catchy theme, a performance from future gay Tommy Kirk, and a song from Little Richard), Kathy Ireland cheapo-vehicle "Alien from LA," Mamie Van Doren and Mel Torme playing the world's oldest teenagers in "Girls Town" (sort of a cross between "Boystown" and "The Trouble with Angels").

I also have a fondness for a SyFy era one, "Soultaker" for a few reasons, mostly because I think that if it had a better cast and a slightly tighter script, it could actually have been a good movie.

There was a post-apocalyptic movie called "City Limits" that Kim Cattrall was in. She was invited to, and attended, the second MST3K convention, for which she will have cool points for the rest of the convention.

I always thought Joel was far hotter than Mike. He's gotten rather overweight, though, hasn't he? If he had indulged in the homosex, he might be svelte now.

I was going to post these exact words.

by Anonymousreply 23September 26, 2010 2:42 PM

Joel was definitely funnier. The show was never as good after he left.

by Anonymousreply 24September 26, 2010 2:52 PM

I actually found Mike funnier. The lack of insistence on the prop comedy helped as well.

I have to wonder if the entire gang is right-wing. Those that were still with the show when it went off the air still participate with him on his RiffTrax project thing. I'm still not entirely sure how that's legal.

On the plus side, Shout Factory has very slowly been making all of the movies available for streaming, at least through Netflix. I wonder what they're going to do about the Sandy Frank movies. Frank doesn't hold the rights to them anymore, but apparently the original Japanese rightsholders don't particular care that their creations are being used for comedy.

by Anonymousreply 25September 26, 2010 3:13 PM

I heard that Pearl Forrester, a.k.a. Mary Jo Pehl, liked the gays, but I do get the sense that all the others may be right-wingers.

by Anonymousreply 26September 26, 2010 3:17 PM

My favorite was the short about skiing where for some reason, the narrator pronounced the word "sheeing". Then they got to waterskiing and the term he used over and over again was "She-whoring". My friends and I often make reference to she-whoring in a lot of contexts.

by Anonymousreply 27September 26, 2010 3:23 PM

[quote]I heard that Pearl Forrester, a.k.a. Mary Jo Pehl, liked the gays

If Mary Jo Pehl isn't a faghag, I need to reexamine a few things.

I think she and her husband run a theater or comedy troupe in Austin now.

It wasn't even so much the right-wing think about Mike that disappointed me so much, it was that I discovered it vis a vis some interview he gave where he talked about how he and his wife always try to protect their children from the evils of secular humanism. I mean, that's not even right-wing, that's approaching tea-bag.

by Anonymousreply 28September 26, 2010 3:32 PM

The first MST3K episode I saw was "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians". I had never even heard of the show before. I stumbled on it early one morning while channel-surfing. I have never laughed so much in my life.

Next to Curb Your Enthusiasm, this is my favorite series of all time.

I adored their riffs on The Brain That Wouldn't Die, Beginning of the End and The Violent Years.

I recorded a lot of their stuff when it was on Comedy Central, and I still have some videos, along with a few their DVDs.

BTW, Mike (before he became the host) was a funny Morrissey in one skit. And some other, he looked pretty sexy wearing shorts.

To this day, I still refer to nasty nurses as Nurseferatu because of that General Hospital clip they talked through.

I have tickets to see Joel and some of the guys to a live version of MST called "Cinema Titanic" in November.

I'd love to know the true story behind the split of the original MST3K crew. In recent interviews Joel has minimized any animosity between CT and Mike's crew, but there's got to be some tension.

Has anyone ever done one of those Rifftrax things? It sounds like a pain in the ass to me. You must have to start the mp3 at exactly the right time or the timing of the jokes would be off. And I guess pausing is out of the question.

I love the Cinematic Titanic movies. I admire performers who create and distribute their products themselves. Knowing that Trace and his wife pack and mail all the DVDs from their garage makes me appreciate them more.

by Anonymousreply 47September 26, 2010 6:59 PM

Also sorry to hear about Mike's ideological leanings. (Wonder how he dresses?) Always thought he was cute and funny on the show.

But Joel had my heart, mind, and other body parts.

I couldn't single out a favorite ep-so many have been mentioned. How about The Beatniks? I practically always laughed my ass off at this show.

by Anonymousreply 48September 26, 2010 8:46 PM

Forgot another favorite short:

"The Days of Our Years" is an industrial safety film produced by Union Pacific Railroad. In what I'm sure is just a coincidence, the accidents which are illustrated are completely the fault of the employee and not management.

What makes it funny though is that it is narrated by this incredibly morose minister (who, according to the credits, was a real-life minister, and what a joy his sermons must have been).

At one point, a railroad brakeman who was near retirement didn't think too much of the tightness in his chest, and keels over from a heart-attack, crushing his buddy working on the track. As he's crumpling over, Crow shouts "Oh, I shouldn't have thought of Mamie Eisenhower!"

Anyway, the heart attack guy recovers, and as he sits grumply on his porch as Reverend Feelgood hovers on the sidewalk. This time, Crow shouts "Get off my land, you pious son of....!"

I was having the worst day ever on Saturday and popped the movie in for the 15th time. There goes a stupid, stupid man.

Love "Mitchell," "San Francisco International," "Riding with Death," and "Being from Another Planet."

I enjoy pretty much every episode, but the repetitive Biography jokes in "Parts: The Clonus Horror" and the fat man jokes in "Overdrawn at the Memory Bank" get tiresome.

by Anonymousreply 50September 27, 2010 12:04 AM

The weird thing is its pretty hard to predict which bad movies will inspire the best jokes. I hink it's pretty much agreed upon that the best of all are the shorts--"Design for Dreaming," "Mr B Natural," "A Date with Your Parents"--but the best full-length ones are a strange and unpredictable bunch: the weird Russian fantasy films (like "Jack Frost" and the Sinbad one), "Angels' Revenge," "Pod People," "Eegah!", "Manos: The Hand of Fate" and "The Brain that Wouldn't Die."

by Anonymousreply 51September 27, 2010 12:12 AM

Teenagers from Outer Space is a favorite. I watch that one and I Accuse my Parents most often.

VotN, I rarely disagree with you so I'll be as cunty as possible. You've got to be half retarded to think there's anything good hiding anywhere in that awful, awful Soultakers movie. It was just terrible and no amount of script doctoring could have cobbled together a "good movie."

by Anonymousreply 52September 27, 2010 12:15 AM

[quote]But I also think it was revealed that Joel had some domestic abuse problem.

I've never heard this, either, and I say this as someone who has been an MST3K fan since the days of rec.arts.tv.mst3k. Has anyone heard this rumor before?

I don't think everyone involved is a rightwinger, simply because the odds are against it. Joel is kind of crunchy and hippy, but I do notice in the first season that he and Trace make some unfortunate jokes about Japanese people and gays. Not a lot, but enough to make you wonder what the hell is going on, notably the several times they say "Ching chong chung!" stuff when an Asian is on the screen.

I don't trust Mike at all. He used to tell a story about how he was brought on the show as a typist and he tentatively made some of his own jokes while they were working on movies, so they made him "head writer" really just to give him a title. It was sort of an "aw shucks, I just fell into this gig" story. A few years ago, though, Frank Conniff said in an interview that Mike was part of the gang back in the Minneapolis comedy circuit, as was his then-girlfriend (now wife) Bridget Jones. Jones was already working on MST3K and, when they needed a lead team writer for the show, and Mike was specifically recruited for the job. He was never "just the typist."

The interview he gave where he said he got mad at a Minnesota paper because it was so liberal he called it the "Red Star Tribune" makes him sound insane.

I do want to thank this thread for causing me to look up something I had always wondered about: During the Joel seasons, a girl sent in drawings of the 'bots but called Crow "Art." Later, Pearl would call Crow "Art" in reference to that.

Well, thanks to a Mike Nelson interview, I discovered that the little girl apparently thought Crow's name was Art because of a skit where Joel introduces the ’bots as the cast of The Honeymooners, and Crow played Art Carney. Now I know!

[quote]"Angels' Revenge,"

One of the things that I always loved about that movie ("Any resemblance to Charlie's Angels is purely intentional") is that even though the real stars of the film are the seven scantily-clad women, they're all billed after the men, including those like Jim Bacchus who only had cameos.

Two of the women were sisters who wrote about their history as Hollywood prostitutes in "You'll Never Make Love In This Town Again."

by Anonymousreply 58September 27, 2010 12:53 AM

"I don't think everyone involved is a rightwinger, simply because the odds are against it."

Friends are more likely than not to share political beliefs - yes, there are exceptions, but this has been proven by multiple studies. We know that nearly all of the people involved in MST3K are at least friendly, some of them very closely so.

That being said, I always wanted to think that Joel was liberal, because he does give off that 'hippie' vibe. His gay jokes on the show always had an ugly tinge to them, though, so I really have no idea what to think about him.

by Anonymousreply 59September 27, 2010 10:54 AM

I don't know anything about the supposed domestic abuse, but some of the shiny came off of Joel for me when, I think shortly after he left (or possibly slightly before) he went after a woman who was running a completely non-commercial fanzine. This was during the time period where fan groups for nerdy things were just starting to migrate onto the net.

Anyway, the woman's 'zine was called "The Gizmocrat" a takeoff on "Gizmonics Institute." Joel owns the trademark on the name (which is why Dr. Forrest and TV's Frank's lair was referred to as Deep 13 when Mike took over), and so in short order, the woman got a Cease And Desist letter from Joel's lawyer.

Now, I completely understand that he owned the trademark and was completely legally correct in doing what he did, but three things about it bothered me:

A) It's just a dick thing to do.

B) After they read a letter on-air from a fan who'd converted another person to a fan by sharing tapes of the show, the credits would always end with the phrase "Keep Circulating the Tapes," encouraging it.

C) The show itself wasn't too concerned about obtaining broadcast rights for the movies they were mocking early on. That's one of the reasons why the KTLA episodes aren't available (as far as I know): They never actually paid for the rights to show the movies.

Long story short, the woman changed the name of her 'zine and henceforth referred to Joel "The Artist Formerly Known As Joel."

by Anonymousreply 60September 27, 2010 11:21 AM

I met Joel briefly at a Cinematic Titanic show. In contrast to his mellow MST3K persona he is livelier, more extroverted and a bit of a smartass in person but still charming and funny. He is still cute too, IMO. Judging from Joel's remarks and the comments the other CT folks made during a panel I gather that there is some bad feeling between Joel and the RiffTrax guys although they may have buried the hatchet since then (this was about two years ago).

R60, I have no problem with Joel protecting his intellectual property. A cease and desist letter is no big deal.

by Anonymousreply 61September 27, 2010 2:19 PM

If she'd been running it as a profit-generating exercise, I would completely agree with you. But as a long-time genre fan, one of the reasons why there's such a feeling of community around it is that even before we had websites and Facebook, we had fanzines and conventions, and there was a great deal of interaction between creator and audience. In my mind, doing something like that crosses a line that, even if it is legally correct, is morally wrong in the greater sci-fi communal sense.

Counter-example: My dislike of Alan Moore is pretty well documented here, and a lot of that, apart from his generally nasty attitude, is that he refuses to have any kind of direct interaction with fans. Doesn't have a website or Twitter, won't attention conventions, even in the UK. But I have read stories of people writing him letters and him granting interviews to fans and that makes me hate him slightly less.

Anyway, I think Trace and Mary Jo may have made an appearance or two on RiffTrax, but I'm honestly not sure.

by Anonymousreply 62September 27, 2010 2:32 PM

"Friends are more likely than not to share political beliefs - yes, there are exceptions, but this has been proven by multiple studies. We know that nearly all of the people involved in MST3K are at least friendly, some of them very closely so."

Well, "multiple studies" have also found that theater geeks (which the MST3K essentially are) are overall a quite liberal bunch. In any case, all of the comments I've seen from Hodgson, Beaulieu, Pehl, and others indicate they have more liberal leanings. Bill Corbett also responded to a comment left on the Satellite of Love web site referring to him as conservative, and he posted back that he wasn't.

I think it's more likely that Nelson and Jones were the odd ones out.

by Anonymousreply 63September 27, 2010 2:56 PM

I always thought Crow, Joel and TV's Frank were gay. They had a gay sensibility before I knew what a gay sensibility was.

by Anonymousreply 64September 27, 2010 3:22 PM

MST3K is still on the "air" if you know where to look. If you have Winamp installed as a media player, check out the several continuous Shoutcast video streams. Justin.tv often has a similar, higher quality stream going, but the broadcaster name varies.

I definitely want to see Cinematic Titanic.

My favorite episode is Ed Woods', The Sinister Urge.

One of the cast members, and I won't say which one, is a Twitter follower of my LGBT content, R64. He's done some very funny gay riffs on the show. You could be right.

by Anonymousreply 70September 27, 2010 11:50 PM

My guess would be Frank Conniff.

Am I allowed to say that I actually thought the host segments with Pearl, Observer, and Bobo were funnier than the Clayton and Frank days?

Although, I have to say I still think the Comedy Central series when Mike and the Bots were cast off into deep space and Mike turned into Captain Janeway and did a rendition of "Proud Mary" while Clay turned into a Starbaby from 2001 was one of the most brilliant ideas the show had?

Well, almost as brilliant as, after Joel's escape and Clay's discovered that he'd crashed in Australia, Frank stated that he hoped he'd landed on Yahoo Serious.

r81 - Twitter is a public site and everything posted there is public and available to all, whether or not they have a Twitter account. There is no way anyone can trace this back to you as literally anyone with an internet connection could have read it. Just tell us who it is so we can make our own minds up.

I'll never understand those who hint around but then refuse to divulge actual information. Why drop hints in the first place? Is it simply so you can skip away while giggling, "I've got a theecwet! I've got a theecwet!"

Seriously, if you don't intend to share then don't say anything in the first place. It's just childish, attention getting behavior at best.

by Anonymousreply 84September 28, 2010 6:44 AM

Twitter is pretty much about attention seeking, whether it's on an individual level or in a more institutional form (which mine is.)

You're quite right, I shouldn't have posted a tease, but I've been thinking a little about that guy's apparent interest in the subject myself.

Here's another problem: readers here could figure out who I am and to get a lot of data about me if I disclose the name. DL is about privacy, even if Twitter is not.

by Anonymousreply 85September 28, 2010 7:04 AM

VoTN, I would just like to stick a small pocket derailment in here and say that disliking an artist for his unwillingness to engage directly with fans (especially when we're talking about the guy who wrote From Hell, for christ's sake) sounds bizarre to me. How is that part of his job? Let the man have his free time.

I guess this might not make much sense to anyone else, but for a lot of genre writers, their appeal is narrow to the point if they wanted, they have the time and inclination to do a great deal of interaction with their fans, who are, in the end, their customers. I don't necessarily mean that they need to be having long phone conversations with individual fans, but even Jo Rowling still does public readings and appearances, and she has more fans and money than God himself. The line between where that sort of behavior might be expected and when it not might be is fuzzy, but I think Alan Moore is on the side of the former.

That's not the only reason I dislike him, I just think it's symptomatic of the real reason: he's a cynical, bitter misanthrope. And if you'd like to discuss that further, ask me in the Marvel vs DC thread.

VotN, I think you fall into the same trap a lot of people from ye olde Usenet days do: They've been fans so long they think they really know the celebrities they're talking about. We know so little about Joel because he has kept his life private, and that was probably part of the reason he went after the fanzine. You know he's not the kind of person that likes to have his personal life broadcast, and the fanzine was all about him personally. I don't really know how you can judge him or call his actions "morally wrong" in that context.

by Anonymousreply 88September 29, 2010 6:05 AM

I dont Think no one has said this yet but ann-margret's "kitten with a whip" was a classic.

But she wasn't running some kind of PerezHilton scandal sheet. It was just an MST3K fanzine. He was just, perfectly legally, asserting his copyright by asking her to change the name.

But I don't think that just because he was legally correct makes it okay.

Joel's going to be at the CHILLER autograph show next weekend and I'm having my "Manos" Santa Claus Conquers The Martians" Double Feature DVD signed.

In the '90's when the movie came out they did a book and I went to the signing and met Michael Nelson, Trace Beaulieu and a bunch of others.

"Anyway, the woman's 'zine was called "The Gizmocrat" a takeoff on "Gizmonics Institute." Joel owns the trademark on the name (which is why Dr. Forrest and TV's Frank's lair was referred to as Deep 13 when Mike took over), and so in short order, the woman got a Cease And Desist letter from Joel's lawyer."

It wasn't quite like that. The woman was a near-stalker who called herself "Agent J", after one of Joel's stand-up comedy routine personas. Joel met her in person and politely asked her to cease and desist, feeling that A.J. was representing herself as Joel's personal assistant or something similar.

by Anonymousreply 102October 22, 2014 3:08 AM

Met him Friday night, nice and easy going. He signed my DVD in gold marker and held it up and said " I don't like this" and took a black marker and highlighted what he wrote to make it look 3D like. He told me they are working to bring back MST3K back and it's a go.

r103, that's awesome. Thanks for sharing.

Has anyone seen their take on, 'Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons'? I'd pay handsomely for it, but it seems to be the holy grail.

Looks like it's been four years since I asked VotN and got no answer, so I'll ask again:

What "domestic" issues are you hinting about with Joel Hodgson? The fact that you never answered the first time makes me pretty suspicious, but I'm willing to give you a listen.

My favorite Mystery Science Theater 3000 ep is the one showing "Terror from the Year 5000" where a silvery nuclear mutant chick comes back in time to the 50s... she has this skin that shines and her touch is deadly. The shenanigans are set on a remote island. Very amusing!

by Anonymousreply 109October 28, 2014 1:20 AM

"Horrors of Spider Island" "Diabolik" "Squirm" "Boggy Creek II: And the Legend Continues" "Blood Waters of Dr. Z"

were all great MST3K episodes

R103 If it comes back the first film for Crow T. Robot, Tom Servo, and Gypsy to watch has to be "Twilight". That film is made for MST3K mockery.

by Anonymousreply 110October 28, 2014 1:21 AM

R108's link is broken. Try this one if you're curious. For me, it's page 2 where Joel's 1997 letter to Lisa Jenkins appears.

I think you can also find this on the old rec.arts.tv.mst3k group if you know how to get around Google Groups, but this link is easier.

My sister and I watched "Teenagers From Outer Space" on an afternoon movie when we pretty little and CRIED over the death of Derek, the main space teen. MARY!

Of course, it's much better when viewed aboard the Satellite of Love.

Other MST3K faves:

Daddy-O- "Want some?"

Mr. B Natural

Appreciating Your Parents-"Mom looks tired." "Yeah, tired of Tommy!"

The Home Economics Story

Posture Pals-"..and they are crowned the king, queen, prince and princess of posture!" "Thereby destroying any chance they will ever have of being cool."

Uncle Jim's Dairy Farm

Circus-"Oh, my God! They're doing it clown style!"

Santa Claus Conquers the Martians-the very fact that such a film exists is cause for hilarity

I found Joel oddly sexy...

by Anonymousreply 112October 28, 2014 5:34 AM

Joel was sexy in a sleepy eyed stoner way.

by Anonymousreply 113October 28, 2014 5:41 AM

Good point, R113. In so many episodes, his eyes looked like they were closed when in fact the squinty look is just his default appearance.

For the life of me, I can't remember. A lot of information has leaked out of my ears in the past four years, so I'll chalk it up to my misremembering something that I'd read, because I can literally find nothing online--even rumors--about Hodgson having domestic violence problems.

The line in "Mitchell" about how the title character likes his gin "by the quart and with a Ding-Dong in the middle" led to what may have been the hardest laugh of my entire life. I had to leave to room because my stomach started to cramp.

I, too, preferred the Pearl, Observer and Bobo "Mads" to Frank and Clay. To be sure, it was Trace, really, who was the turn off. Still, I missed Joel when the "switch" came. I did have a crush on Mike for awhile, but, that attraction is long dead since I discovered his politics. Joel will, forever, have a place in my heart with his sleepy eyes and floppy-headed delivery.

The true star, for me, is Mary Jo Pehl. I've had the pleasure of meeting her socially a few times, and, she's a lovely, lovely person. You can always tell when a joke or a gag was written by Pehl. There's just a certain feeling to her work which elevated many an episode.

I've always been curious about Joel as a person, but, he's so private, there's little information available about him.

Jan in the Pan!

A few months ago, National Geographic Channel had Mike and the rest of the RiffTrax guys to do a few specials taking some of their series and giving it the MST3K treatment. I hope they could do something like that again.

Also, the RiffTrax that are available for educational shorts are often just as sharp as the ones that were used the actual show.

by Anonymousreply 122October 29, 2014 3:52 PM

I don't know which movie it was but one line I always remember features two characters, one of whom is named Buddie. Cue the other character saying "But... Buddy..." and then Tom Servo saying "butt buddy?"

Joel said on a Reddit AMA yesterday that they're crowdsourcing for a new reboot of MST3K with new hosts. Anyone interested?

I'm a huge MST3K fan, own all the episodes, etc. etc. but I'm not interested in an MST3K reboot with new hosts. And I don't know what to think about the new Rifftrax streaming of some MST3K movies so Mike, Kevin and Bill can now earn profits. What about all the other MST3K cast who aren't included in the Rifftrax deal?

Anyway, it's 4:25AM and these are the things I'm thinking about right now.

by Anonymousreply 139November 11, 2015 9:26 AM

He sent out another email today explaining his reasoning behind using a new host. He says he always wanted the show to be like SNL or Doctor Who and regularly rotate casts. He says that if the show had continued to a different host past Mike, the Team Joel/Team Mike stuff would have been irrelevant. It would be like preferring Tom Baker to Sylvester McCoy instead.

And he says he'd rather not turn this in a war between nuMST3K and RiffTrax, because RiffTrax allows riffing on movies that they'd never be able to afford any other way.

Personally, my Kickstarter pledge is money I'll happily part with.

by Anonymousreply 140November 13, 2015 12:55 AM

Help with a MST3kK question anyone? One of my favorite openings from any episode is where the SOL is being hit by a Silly String Storm, with Joel and the bots fighting to stay alive on the bridge. Crow is somehow blinded and says " I'm blind! I'm blind! That thing cut me!". I can't remember which episode and I've never been able to find it on Youtube.
