http://www.answers.com/topic/beet-sugar-3
- [quote]There is a difference between cane and beet sugar, one very important one...one comes from beets, the other from sugar cane?\
\
Sugar from both beets and cane is sucrose, i.e. C12 H22 O11. There is no difference between them other than the source plant.\
\
Commercial sugar beet production in the U.S. ended with the dissolution of U&I Sugar in 1978. It''s no longer available in every supermarket. Soft drink manufacturers are not using it as a sweetener. A few small US producers that still make and sell beet sugar to health food stores in Minnesota does not mean it is commercially viable and widely available in food products in the U.S..

The conversation that developed at JUB after the original post was certainly a lot different than the one that would have developed here. But given the sincere nature of his original post, mixed in the thread would probably have been advice similar to the advice he got in the JUB thread. There probably would have been a couple of EST! posts, but DL''s EST threads tend to be rather obvious, and I doubt Clementi''s post would have garnered more than a couple of EST accusations.%0D\

Burger Chef hamburgers
- Rose's the company that makse the lime juice and margarita mix made the best bottled bloody mary mix. Stopped in the early 80's. It was the best.
- Haagen Dazs Mayan Chocolate Ice Cream. I tried it because of a thread on DL and got addicted. Alas it's been discontinued.
I also loved their Sticky Toffee Pudding ice cream.

- "Swanson oriental broth"
I think they quit making that because the orientals didn't want to be boiled for broth anymore. Pity.
- Diet Sprite
- R151, a friend sent me a photo of a fully restored '47 Sportsman he saw in a show. It's gorgeous, that light lemon yellow. It sold for $250K.
- Mickey Mouse ice cream bars.

- R154, Mexican Coca-Cola is made with real cane sugar. I live in a border state where it's fairly easy to come by, and any time I go across the border I stock up. There are other soft drinks that are made with cane sugar in Mexico, such as Orange Crush.
It's amazing how much better they taste.
- R205- You read my mind. Both of those were great.
- Haagen Dazs dulce de leche and cinnamon were also wonderful. Don't know if they're seasonal or discontinued.
- Cereal box prizes. It was so fun to have the prize plop out into the bowl while pouring the cereal into it. If there are still cereal box prizes, I haven't seen any, until it's some dumb sticker or decal or something. I liked getting little plastic figures. I liked collecting them.

That's the way I always think of them, from the old listings in the TV Guide. I play all the old ones while I'm doing stuff around the house. What I mean is an old- fashioned big screen song, dancer, schmaltz fest. (lately I've become hooked on Bollywood... But it's hard to sing along if ya don't know Hindi... Haha)
Milani's 1890 French Dressing. A staple at our house growing up. I found some on Amazon for arm/leg. But why not in stores, boo hoo. I could freak out my sibs w/Xmas prez.

Candy lipsticks. They were half-wrapped in gold paper and then cellophane.
They were dark red and kind of a chalky-chewy combination.
Candy cigarettes were okay, but I think those were made out of that Necco-wafer shit, the worst shit ever.

- Secure pensions you could live on.
- OMG, thank you R220! I have been racking my brain for months trying to remember the name of that awful crap I used to put in my hair (when I had hair) back in the 80's.
- The awesome Neutrogena clear nail lacquer that came in a tube you turned upside down and applied to nails very quickly and cleanly. It had a great matte cover, so you could not tell someone was wearing it. I used to put in on before gardening to save my nails. It worked great and nothing is as good.
A lot of lip balms turn my lips white or pale. Blistex used to make a lip balm called Lip Tone which was tinted in a way that did not really color your lips, but prevented that whitening/paleness. They have tinted lip blams today, but they put ridiculous color on the lips.
- Jovan Grass Oil, cologne for men.
- [quote] Those X-mas lights that looked like candles and had the water bubbles inside them.
They still sell these on Christmas websites and in atalogues, but they are expensive.
I used to buy light covers -- peppermint candies, snowmen, Christmas mice, etc for $5 a box (containing 20 light covers), $2.50 the day after Christmas.
I was looking at a Christmans website and they want $39 for a box of 10 or 15 light covers. Bullshit, man.
My dad bought a box of big round "iced" colored lights for our Christmas tree in 1967. I loved those things. Eventually, they all popped except the yellow one.
We were only alllowed to turn our Christmas tree lights on for 20 minutes -- even on a fake tree -- because of the fire hazard from the hot lights in those days. I used to look forward to being alone in the house because I would turn on the tree lights and bring my portable record player into the living room and play albums, particularly the Beatles Revolver, and dance.
- [quote] Hair dryers with a hose and vinyl cap attachment.
They sell some, but all the reviews say they are terrible, with very little power. Takes hours to dry the hair.
As for Pssst, lots of companies sell dry shampoo. Salon Grafix sells it and I just bought a travel size one from another company at Target. Alas, they do not leave the gray film on your head that yiu brush out. It's pretty much invisible.
- R228, are you talking about Neutrogena Instant Nail Enhancer? I still have a little bit left in a tube.
- Yes, R232. It was great. The matte, not the pearl finish.

- Charlotte russe.
It was very popular in Jewish neighborhoods and sold from a street cart or in a luncheonette. I have gone on searches with my Jewish partner's cousin looking for it. She has lived in AZ for 35 years and always remembered eating them after school in Brooklyn the winter. She just figured when she moved back here she would be able to buy them in a bakery now, but they're pretty much gone.
It was made with leftover bakery sponge cake or ladyfingers in a cup with a push-up bottom. As you ate the cake, you pushed the bottom up.
Since it was made with fresh whipped cream, it was sold in the cold months and was associated with autumn and winter.

- Another vote for Pudding Pops, esp the vanilla/chocolate swirl ones. And another vote for Burger Chef burgers, esp the "Big Chef" which had some kind of mayonnaise based dressing.
And this goes way back, but Dolly Madison used to make a snack cake called "French pastry"--it was a light yellow cake covered in chocolate with a glob of some kind of white icing on the inside. I would KILL to have a glob of that shit.
Also used to love "Reggie" candy bars, named for Reggie Jackson. They were round and tasted like Baby Ruths only better.
my cholesterol is fine now, thanks
- Marathon candy bars. We used to keep them in the freezer and break off chunks.
- Kraft French Dressing like in the 80s with basically no calories but a strong taste.
Not country french or creamy french..
- Aveda spray wax for your hair. I haven't been able to find a product that's anywhere near similar. I hate mousse and gel. I have bought some old, unopened bottles off eBay before but I think I'm out of luck.

- You can buy the Mexican Coca-Cola with real sugar at Costco. It comes in the old-timey glass bottles, and it's so much better than regular American Coke.
- They didn't make a candy bar and name it after Reggie they renamed one for him
[quote]The Yankees' home opener of the 1978 season, on April 13 against the Chicago White Sox, featured a new product, the "Reggie!" bar. In 1976, while playing in Baltimore, Jackson had said, "If I played in New York, they'd name a candy bar after me." The Standard Brands company responded with a circular "bar" of peanuts dipped in caramel and covered in chocolate, a confection which was originally named the Wayne Bun as it was made in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. The Reggie! bars were handed to fans as they walked into Yankee Stadium. Jackson hit a home run, and when he returned to right field the next inning, fans began throwing the Reggie bars on the field in celebration. Jackson told the press that this confused him, thinking that maybe the fans did not like the candy[citation needed]. The Yankees won the game, 4–2.
- Blueberry Bubble Yum
- I've seen pudding pops at ALDI, but they seem to be seasonal.
- I was surprised someone else wrote about Marathon bars.
I loved them and think about them frequently.
Braided gooey caramel in milk chocolate, and all of them were king sized, maybe 7-8 inches.
Also, Hostess products today are vile compared to the deliciousness of yesteryear.
Suzy Q's, King Dons, Twinkies and Cupcakes used to have a light, fluffy quality.
I bought a Suzy Q a few months ago, and all I could taste is the chemical-dominant, gluey cream filling they use now.

- Entenmanns Chocolate Crumb Donuts were the bomb!
Man those were good. Chocolate donuts with chocolate bits strewn about, and powdered sugar dumped over everything in the box.
Dole used to make Mountain Cherry juice, which had no sugar.
Now the juices are combined with other berries, and sugar or corn syrup are unnecessarily added.

Sounds like a Russian hit man.
My picks: Half the products at Trader Joe's. Seriously, you find something you like and six months later it's been discontinued. They do this more than any other store I've ever seen.
- My first thought was Dutch Apple Pop-Tarts. Then I realized that was me posting at R21. Not much has changed in two years.
- Dolly Madison "French Pastries". Also Anastsia confections famous "Fudge-a-gator"
- Vitalis hair tonic--and does anyone know if they still make Prell shampoo and Bryllcream (a little dab'll do ya)? I asked Vermont Country Store about Ipana toothpaste and they said they never heard of it--it was a very popular toothpaste in the 1950s as was tooth powder as an alternative to toothpaste, however messier to put on your brush, unless you shook some in your mouth and started brushing. Clark's teaberry gum and Clark bars too. Does anyone recall a kind of scented gunk called Rose's something or other that made the front hairs stand up with "crew" cuts in the early 1960s? I also recall boy's sizes for Stetson hats in the late '50s early '60s. After your mother slicked down your hair with Vitalis for church she stuck a hat on you and told you to leave it just so, don't move it or mess with it.

Prell is a harsh detergent masquerading as a shampoo. Don't use it if you can find it.
For Vitalis and Bryllcream, take a good look at the shaving isle of any department store or drug store. Things like that are normally on the bottom of the shelf.

How about ANYTHING made in the USA?!
- Anything made in the USA would be good. The big obscenity that no one talks about (well, one of them), is the destruction of manufacturing, and the inability to buy anything made in the country.
- R-275 Clarks Teaberry gum is making a comeback, I saw some at an exxon just today. You can find the gum & the Clark bar at most country stores & Amazon.
It looks like Hostess products will become extinct soon.
- Market Day Italian Dipper
- Certs--Certs has a golden drop of Retsyn, **BLEEM** to leave your mouth minty fresh. Certs is two, two, two mints in one. OK, how about Metrecal the diet drink? And Ayds diet candy?! Bosco chocolate drink mix. POP in bottles--Tahitian Treat, Ma's Old Fashion Root
Beer and Orange Soda, Bubble Up, Teem, Tab, Grape Nehi, RC Cola, cherry, lemon, lime, lemon-lime and redpop--all of the soft drinks then tasted much better and were in huge variety. The shit in cans now is undrinkable. I haven't had any since the 1960s. I have heard however that McDonald's, of all places, has fountain Coke that many say tastes like Coke did in the '50s and '60s.
I know banks aren't necessarily a "product" I suppose, but would anyone know of a bank, usually located downtown, that still operates with the tellers cages and marble countertops? It never ceases to amaze me how hard this country works at wringing out of itself anything that was pleasurable, like cheap movies in great theaters and I DON'T mean these AMC Multiplex strip mall shitholes either. Downtown Department stores with distinctive smells and character are almost extinct as well from the American urban landscape. At least 2 generations have grown up without any knowledge of the truly pleasurable experience of a REAL department store downtown. Streetcars are another item they don't make in this country right now but should, and plenty of them to get away from dependence on oil and the countries that produce it. Good, punctual passenger train service is another item--Amtrak is NOTHING.

- r292, with you on Hawaiian Punch. Used to drink it from those large cans back in the late '70s. It was delicious. The current version in the 2-liter tastes like chemicals.

I always disliked Twinkies, but we used to keep a consistent supply of Ho Ho's, Ding Dongs (called King Dons in the Midwest) & Cupcakes in college. Best...stoner...food...ever!!!
- Is there a site that shows all kinds of discontinued products?
- lol, I was at the grocery store earlier this evening, and an elderly woman was asking a stockboy where the Hostess products were located. She wasn't fat, so maybe she was buying them for her husband or her grandchildren.
The Hostess Apocolypse reminds me of Woody Harrelson's character searching for Twinkies in Zombieland. Clip rated R due to language...

- Why doesn't entenmann's make the individually wrapped brownies anymore?
- R304 they were making Drake's Cakes still, but I think that ended when Hostess went down.
I vote for Trader Joe's Banana Waffles. They were the best.
Also, this odd lunch meat known as "chicken roll" that I had in the 90s. It was delicious. It was also likely made of parts of the chicken I don't want to know about. The best I can do to describe it is if someone made baloney that tasted like the best piece of BBQ or rotisserie chicken you've ever had.
- Callard and Bowser butterscotch candies (they came individually wrapped in a paper package) and Regal Crown sour cherry candies (they came individually wrapped in a roll).
- I miss all the weird and gimmicky candy that was made when I was a kid. The Astro Pops and the balls with the awful generic candy pieces in one side and an awesome toy in the other. There was a similar product in the 90s called Wonder Ball that was a chocolate shell around a container with a little toy inside but I think either a little kid or an autistic older kid choked on one and of course mommies everywhere went apeshit and got them banned. There's a candy/toy called Kinder Eggs but I guess you'd have to order them online since they'd be illegal here.
