- She was the last time I saw her.
- R1 = President Ford
- TMC showed three of her best last night. "Poor Little Rich Girl" Her tapping to "Military Man" is amazing. The easily keeps up with her co stars.
- DEvout republican. Never talks about how abusive her mom was. *yawn*
- She was a rich girl during the depression, what do you expect? Do you think she''d be grateful that the democrats won WW2? They made her melt down her rubber dolls to support the war effort!
- I think I could forgive the republican part if she''s just spill the dirt on her upbringing. You know it must have been hell.
- She already jumped on the ''I was molested'' bandwagon, which is more than I ever thought we''d get from the depression era angel. Besides, she was a little girl and probably has hazy recollections of the career highlights that took place when she was four.
- She claims Arthur Freed put the make on her when she was 12 or so. I don''t believe her.
- I don''t think she''s a hard-core Republican, is she? I thought she was a moderate Repub.\
\
And wasn''t she involved with President Carter''s inauguration?
- [quote]She claims Arthur Freed put the make on her when she was 12 or so. I don''t believe her.\

She didn''t say it was Arthur Freed, she said it was some producer and she didn''t say his name.
- r 10: but she gives clues, and all of them point to Freed.
- She is still alive.

- Shirley Temple! The child star grew up to marry Sergeant Jack Agar in 1945. Shirley then gave birth to Linda Shirley (pictured here) in 1948 followed by two other children with second husband Charles Alden Black.
The cheeks indefinitely give her away, even in her adult incarnation.

- If anyone is deserving of a Kennedy Center Honor it's her.
How quickly they forget....she was literally a symbol of American hope and inspiration throughout The Great Depression.
Just because it was a long time ago, doesn't mean she should be forgotten.
- R20 :)
You are right.
I wish her movies could be more available than it is now.
Fort Apache is available though, maybe because it is a John Wayne movie and Americans have an obsession with him.
http://filmfanatic.org/reviews/wp-content/uploads/2006/03/Fort-Apache-Temple.jpg
- She already got a Kennedy Center Honor, r20.
- Shirley got the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. She would have been 78. She had to be assisted on both sides to climb the stairs to the stage. But once she got up there, she spoke very eloquently.
I remember seeing a TCM special with Jane Withers, Dickie Moore and Darryl Hickman. I remember Jane saying Shirley had her own dressing room right off set. When it was time for her to perform, she came out and did her scene. Then her mother took her back to the dressing room. Mrs Temple wouldn't let Shirley interact with the other child actors.
I don't think there will ever be a tell-all book from her. She knows she is a beloved figure, and would do nothing to tarnish that. I used to know a guy who claimed to have had a torrid affair with one of her sons. This would have been in the 70s.

- She and Mickey Rooney were the most famous child stars of their eras.
- I love her movies, especially the loathed flop "The Blue Bird", which is actually spooky and wonderful.
- I saw a PBS special that matches what R23 said. A child actor who worked with her earlier on and then a few years later noted that in the first film they did play together, but a few years later she was ushered into her dressing room, and he only saw her when working on the set.
- I love The Blue Bird too, r25, especially the scenes with the children waiting to be born.
- Mickey Rooney was more of a teenage star than child star. (although he was in movies as a kid)

- Shirley said that her favorite of all her movies was Wee Willie Winkie, which was directed by John Ford. It's on DVD and holds up quite well. Definitely worth a look.

- thanks, R23, but in that clip, she manages the stairs just fine - it looks like she's re-creating the tap step that she performed with Bojangles Robinson in the early '30s.
- Her first husband, John Agar, was very hunky and handsome, but he had a terrible drinking problem and it helped to finish the marriage.
But, Charles Black Sr., her second husband, who she married in 1950 and stayed married to until he died in '05, was really fucking gorgeous. He had movie star looks.

- It surprises me that she gets so little attention from the gays as we all grew up with her movies on TV. Or at least those of us over 50.
Do they still show her films on weekend mornings? Probably not.
If you're over 60, like me, you might even have fond memories of her hosting Shirley Temple's Storybook, which was a weekly anthology series that she introduced and occasionally starred in, IIRC.

- I thought Joan Biaz lives in La Honda, CA about 20 minutes but mega bucks away from Woodside. Woodside, Portola Valley and Atherton could buy the rest of CA and use it for a park.
- She grew up to be a 50s porn star named Shirtless Dimple
- Both first husband , actor John Agar, and 2nd / current Charles, were amazingly handsome, in their youth. Especially Black, who had jet black hair, and looked a bit like an Arrow Shirt model. Looks were obviously important to Miss Shirley, Agar turned out to be a drunk however.

Mickey Rooney will tell you he was the most famous child actor of his age.

- Looooooooool R41
- Why didn't she successfully transition into a super celebrity adult actress? She certainly had the looks and grew into a very attractive young woman.
- R43 i was wondering the same thing.
Maybe she didn't want to sleep with many men and Hollywood was a big big bed.
Dunno really though...
- Shirley WAS a successful adult actress. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Since You Went Away and The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer were a few of her hits as a young woman in the 1940's. She had a very successful TV show in the 50's, as another poster stated, The Shirley Temple Storybook. There was no way to ever come close to her super superstardom as a child actress, though. But she was around and making movies for many years after she grew up. The country certainly knew who the "adult" Shirley Temple was.
- R45 hmm ok. We just were talking about international fame. Lana Turner, Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren for example had that.
Anyway, i think that Shirley Temple was really stunning and that more of her movies should be released in DVD
- Two factors I think.
One was she couldn't escape her past. By the time she was six, she was an national icon and one of the most famous people in the world. Shirley may have been a pretty, curvy teen, but audiences couldn't get beyond the image of her tapping up the staircase with Bill Robinson or dimpling around in her polka-dotted dress.
The other factor was that her talents didn't mature. Her singing and dancing were remarkable for a kid, but they were no more than average for a teen. She grew up and there was nothing special about her.
- Is she still making movies? Has she made the transition to adult roles? To posthumous awards?
This thread is useless without naked pics.
- It would have been interesting to see how Shirley would have fared in BABES ON BROADWAY (as originally intended) alongside Garland & Rooney and under the direction of screaming batshit crazy Busby Berkeley.
- I have read about Shirley Temple that as child she oozed sexiness. What a strange comment. Anyway i prefer to see her adult or at least her teenage photos because she was really sexy and interesting.

- She recently came out of retirement and is filming "Curly Top II-Curly's Revenge". It is scheduled for release in January 2014. LOL.
- W&W for R52 LOL
- She just been cast as Baby June opposite Streisand's Mama Rose.
- ....with Deanna Durbin as Louise.
- Another point I forgot:
Shirley's parents had VERY strict ideas about the 'proper' roles for the teenage Temple, so she was never challenged by really interesting roles.
She was first choice for Veda in MILDRED PIERCE.
I am not kidding
- R55 And Luise Rainer as Miss Mazeppa.
- "I thought Joan Biaz lives in La Honda, CA about 20 minutes but mega bucks away from Woodside. "
She lives in Portola Valley, if my sources are correct, and has since it was a quiet country place. Portola Valley houses weren't cheap back in her big-money days, but it was definintely before Bay Area real estate prices exploded.
- Shirley Temple is to this day the biggest child star ever. I think it's hard for us today to understand the impact she had on the public during the Great Depression.
- Young Shirley Temple
http://images.tvrage.com/people_galleries/13/36955/73098.jpg
- I would imagine that by the time she was in her mid-teens, she was bored and/or frustrated with being controlled by studios and film schedules and just wanted to live a little. Her ambition to succeed as an actress just wasn't there.
It must be why she married as young as she did the first time. She was looking for some normalcy in her life. Didn't she have several children with her second husband?
- It would have been interesting if she'd tried a late career comeback and played roles like Jessica Tandy did in her elder years.
- R61 with her second husband they produced two children, a son and a daughter.
With her first husband she has a daughter.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000073/bio
- I think once she'd exhausted her long childhood Fox contract she was signed up by David O Selznick.
It's surprising she wasn't grabbed by MGM where they might have made something out of her musical talents. And the threat of her presence might have helped keep Judy Garland in line.
- Really though, Shirley couldn't act...at all. What worked for her as a child: mugging and pouting was not going to work for her as a teen or an adult. I saw "Since You Went Away" years ago and I seem to recall she had that false earnest quality that a lot of child actors have. There's a phoniness to it, and some former child actors have it more than other, but it usually works for them as kids, when being alert and able to deliver lines with something resembling emotion is all that matters, but it's a bad habit and it's hard to unlearn.
- Shirley Temple was not just one of the biggest child stars of her day, she was the #1 Box Office champ, according to the Quigley poll, for the years 1935, 1936, 1937, and 1938. Mickey Rooney was on the top of that list in 1939, '40, and '41. Then Abbott & Costello, then Betty Grable, then the list surrendered itself first to Bing Crosby and then Bob Hope: Crosby '45 to '48, Hope '49;throughout the '50s, the list was headed by John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Martin & Lewis, William Holden, Jimmy Stewart, and, yes, eww, Glenn Ford; Rock Hudson and Doris Day traded the #1 spot back and forth into the early '60s, with Elizabeth Taylor up there for a hot minute; then Sean Connery, Julie Andrews, Sidney Poitier, Paul Newman, more Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Redford, Stallone, Burt Reynolds! For five years! The Bing Crosby of the late '70s/early '80s! That explains how Reagan got elected! Then more Eastwood, more Stallone, and Tom Cruise rears his ugly head in 1986, just ahead of Eddie Murphy: the reign of the closet cases! Jack Nicholson in '89. Schwarzenegger! Kevin Costner, what happened to him? More Cruise, more Eastwood, Tom Hanks! The Jimmy Stewart of the '90s. Cruise ties with Mel Gibson in 1996: a big homo hiding behind Xenu; a big homo hiding behind anti-semitism. Harrison Ford, '97 (big homo hiding behind pot-headedness and Calisa Flockart); Tom Hanks '98 (angry alcoholic hiding behind Steven Spielberg); Julia Roberts in '99; and then the Toms battle it out, Cruise and Hanks, through half the '00s, with a brief pause for Jim Carrey; Johnny Depp, Johnny Depp, Will Smith; our Sandra Bullock, a Nazi hiding behind a Nazi and an adopted child; Johnny Depp; and, last year, Brad Pitt. Before Shirley Temple, there were two years of Marie Dressler and a year of Will Rogers.
Those are all Quigley's top money-makers, since the year Quigley started counting. Shirley Temple is one of only 8 women who ever made it to #1, if I'm counting right.
So that's an amazingness, in its way.
Only three black people on top of that list, of course: Poitier, Murphy, and Smith.
In closing, let me say that I loathe Shirley Temple, with an exception made for her wearing-of-her-first-adult-shoes in SINCE YOU WENT AWAY; and also that when I was a little kid in the late '60s and she was appointed (by Nixon!) US Representative to the United Nations General Assembly, and thereupon Ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia (!), she was sometimes mentioned on the radio by the name Shirley Temple Black; and for a long time, I thought it meant that she was literally the black Shirley Temple, and that there were two Shirley Temples, the white one in the movies, and the black one at the UN.
- [quote]It's surprising she wasn't grabbed by MGM where they might have made something out of her musical talents.
They did. (The following quoted language) is from Temple's Wiki page. I'd guess that she (or her mother) wasn't happy with the material or the focus she was getting at Metro. The IMDB pages for her Metro films both seem to indicate that these weren't the usual glossy studio fare.
[quote]MGM signed Temple for her comeback, and made plans to team her with Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney first for the Andy Hardy series, and then when that idea was quickly abandoned, teaming Temple with Garland and Rooney for the musical Babes on Broadway. However, realizing that both Garland and Rooney could easily upstage Temple, MGM replaced Shirley in that film with Virginia Weidler. As a result, Temple's only film for Metro became Kathleen in 1941, a story about an unhappy teenager. The film was not a success and her MGM contract was canceled after mutual consent. Miss Annie Rooney followed for United Artists in 1942, but it too was unsuccessful.

- R45: Her tv show only lasted a season and a half and was a format that wouldn't showcase her adult acting skills: a kid's anthology. She did a sitcom pilot that didn't sell, too. Her later films didn't do well. She was kind of wooden as a mature actress. Mickey Rooney didn't do much better--failed tv series, movies that were never released. He had more success doing guest shots on tv shows. A little Mickey went a long way as he mugged, hammed, and otherwise was a little too much. That may be why the guest shots worked better. He was one of those hasbeen gasbags who'd go on Johnny Carson and wish the studio system was around exploiting people. Temple was smart not to become a grasping showbusiness mess like that.
- [quote]TMC showed three of her best last night. "Poor Little Rich Girl" Her tapping to "Military Man" is amazing. The easily keeps up with her co stars.
According to her tale, Temple not only kept up with her adult co-stars but she outlasted them in accuracy and stamina. The three had a devil of a time dancing in sync. They wore themselves down with take after take. But Shirley alone nailed the routine every time while Jack Haley and Alice Faye flubbed it repeatedly. Her mother escorted her off the set in triumph when filming was at long last completed.
- Was it Greene who called her a little slut?
- In 1937 Greene was a film reviewer for Night and Day magazine. In a review of the Shirley Temple vehicle Wee Willie Winkie, he wrote: "Her admirers – middle-aged men and clergymen – respond to her dubious coquetry, to the sight of her well-shaped and desirable little body, packed with enormous vitality, only because the safety curtain of story and dialogue drops between their intelligence and their desire."
- [quote]WHET Shirley Temple??
Oh dear
- The Movie Review of Wee Willie Winkie That Almost Sent Greene to Prison
An excerpt from Greene's review that caused him so much trouble and at the same time led to his greatest novel, 1940's The Power and the Glory:
“Infancy is [Temple’s] disguise, her appeal is secret and adult with the seductiveness of a Dietrich...Her well-developed rump twists in a tap-dance. She measures a man with agile studio eyes [emphasis added] and dimpled depravity.
"Her admirers – middle-aged men and clergymen – respond to her dubious coquetry and well-shaped and desirable little body...Hear the gasp of her antique audience. Some of her popularity seems to rest on an oddly precocious body as voluptuous in grey flannel trousers as Miss Dietrich’s.”
(Greene was referring to Dietrich's costume in 1932's Blonde Venus, in which the actress wears a man's tuxedo and kisses another woman with unapologetic eroticism.)
His implication that Temple was actually a dwarfish grownup was intended as a joke, which her studio didn’t get. Fox was also not amused by another passage in the review accusing the studio of “procuring Shirley Temple for immoral purposes.”

ILoveYouGuys
- She's been riding the Good Ship Lollipop (in other words, sucking dick on Skid Row to support her heroin addiction).
- R81, excuse me?
- In 1945, at the age of 17, she married John Agar, a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps, who became an actor. Their daughter, Linda Susan, was born in 1948, but the marriage swiftly disintegrated owing to his chronic drinking and serial infidelity.
On holiday in Honolulu in 1950 she met and fell in love with California businessman Charles Alden Black, nine years her senior, who confessed that he had never seen one of her films. They were married in December of that year. Their son Charles Jr. was born in 1952 and their daughter Lori in 1954.
Then, in 1972, she discovered a lump on her left breast which proved to be malignant, and underwent a mastectomy. Afterwards, she "reached up to feel the void. It was an amputation, and I faced it."
With characteristic courage, she went public on her illness, becoming one of the first female celebrities to admit to breast cancer, which brought her 50,000 letters of support.
In 1974 she was appointed United States Ambassador to Ghana, and in 1976 became America's first female Chief of Protocol at the White House.
- Shirley was devastated when, on August 4, 2005, her husband died from myelodysplastic syndrome (a bone marrow disease) at the age of 86, after almost 55 years of marriage.
Touchingly, she kept Charles's voice on their answering machine. "I don't ever want to erase it," she said.
In 2006, Temple received the Screen Actors Guild's Lifetime Achievement Award for having "lived the most remarkable life, as the brilliant performer the world came to know when she was just a child to the dedicated public servant who has served her country both at home and abroad for 30 years."
These claims do not seem excessive. This was one child star who did not self-destruct through booze, drugs or sex, who kept faith with the public, loved her country and justly became the world-wide cinematic legend and American icon that she remains today.
Her own assessment of her career is modest. "I class myself with Rin Tin Tin," she said once. "At the end of the Depression, people were perhaps looking for something to cheer themselves up. They fell in love with a dog and a little girl. It won't happen again."
And it hasn't. No child star since has ever won more than a fraction of the fame and popularity that Shirley Temple achieved.

She mentioned that they actually were good glasses, and that if you put them in the dishwasher several times the little Shirley face would wash off. Cavett pretended to be shocked by her lack of sentimentality. The interesting point--which wasn't surprising--is that she wasn't particularly enthralled by memories of her seven or eight year old self.

- Shirley Temple as an adult performer was just awful. The rolling eyes....the pout...she relied on them as an adult. She was an embarrassment.
Do watch this: Shirley temple on the Mitch Miller Show. This would have been around 1962/63. Temple was around 35 years old and still doing Little Miss Marker.

- Temple came to despise democrats and all they stood for while she was still very young. She witnessed a democratic senator in a limousine being standoffish one day at the studio.
- Shirley loved Mrs. See's chocolates.
- She suffered the fate of all child stars - even worse because she was so popular. The public didn't like her grown up. My mother grew up at the same time as Shirley Temple and said that she lost her popularlity as she went into her pre-teens. People like the little girl. Even the popular films she made as a young adult were not popular because of her. They were popular because of other stars, like John Wayne, and Cary Grant. Any young actress could have played those roles, and I think she knew that. She couldn't carry a film when she grew up like she had as a child.
- Sorry, but I really think Shirley lost interest in her career and wanted to be a successful wife and mother. For her, that was a novelty.
