• Shirley got the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. She would have been 78. She had to be assisted on both sides to climb the stairs to the stage. But once she got up there, she spoke very eloquently. I remember seeing a TCM special with Jane Withers, Dickie Moore and Darryl Hickman. I remember Jane saying Shirley had her own dressing room right off set. When it was time for her to perform, she came out and did her scene. Then her mother took her back to the dressing room. Mrs Temple wouldn't let Shirley interact with the other child actors. I don't think there will ever be a tell-all book from her. She knows she is a beloved figure, and would do nothing to tarnish that. I used to know a guy who claimed to have had a torrid affair with one of her sons. This would have been in the 70s.

• Her first husband, John Agar, was very hunky and handsome, but he had a terrible drinking problem and it helped to finish the marriage. But, Charles Black Sr., her second husband, who she married in 1950 and stayed married to until he died in '05, was really fucking gorgeous. He had movie star looks.

• It surprises me that she gets so little attention from the gays as we all grew up with her movies on TV. Or at least those of us over 50. Do they still show her films on weekend mornings? Probably not. If you're over 60, like me, you might even have fond memories of her hosting Shirley Temple's Storybook, which was a weekly anthology series that she introduced and occasionally starred in, IIRC.

• Shirley WAS a successful adult actress. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Since You Went Away and The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer were a few of her hits as a young woman in the 1940's. She had a very successful TV show in the 50's, as another poster stated, The Shirley Temple Storybook. There was no way to ever come close to her super superstardom as a child actress, though. But she was around and making movies for many years after she grew up. The country certainly knew who the "adult" Shirley Temple was.

• Two factors I think. One was she couldn't escape her past. By the time she was six, she was an national icon and one of the most famous people in the world. Shirley may have been a pretty, curvy teen, but audiences couldn't get beyond the image of her tapping up the staircase with Bill Robinson or dimpling around in her polka-dotted dress. The other factor was that her talents didn't mature. Her singing and dancing were remarkable for a kid, but they were no more than average for a teen. She grew up and there was nothing special about her.

• I would imagine that by the time she was in her mid-teens, she was bored and/or frustrated with being controlled by studios and film schedules and just wanted to live a little. Her ambition to succeed as an actress just wasn't there. It must be why she married as young as she did the first time. She was looking for some normalcy in her life. • I think once she'd exhausted her long childhood Fox contract she was signed up by David O Selznick. It's surprising she wasn't grabbed by MGM where they might have made something out of her musical talents. And the threat of her presence might have helped keep Judy Garland in line.

• Really though, Shirley couldn't act...at all. What worked for her as a child: mugging and pouting was not going to work for her as a teen or an adult. I saw "Since You Went Away" years ago and I seem to recall she had that false earnest quality that a lot of child actors have. There's a phoniness to it, and some former child actors have it more than other, but it usually works for them as kids, when being alert and able to deliver lines with something resembling emotion is all that matters, but it's a bad habit and it's hard to unlearn.

• R45: Her tv show only lasted a season and a half and was a format that wouldn't showcase her adult acting skills: a kid's anthology. She did a sitcom pilot that didn't sell, too. Her later films didn't do well. She was kind of wooden as a mature actress. Mickey Rooney didn't do much better--failed tv series, movies that were never released. He had more success doing guest shots on tv shows. A little Mickey went a long way as he mugged, hammed, and otherwise was a little too much. That may be why the guest shots worked better. He was one of those hasbeen gasbags who'd go on Johnny Carson and wish the studio system was around exploiting people. Temple was smart not to become a grasping showbusiness mess like that.

• I remember seeing her on Dick Cavett years ago. He was talking about the value of some Shirley Temple glasses that had pictures of Shirley's face all over them. She mentioned that they actually were good glasses, and that if you put them in the dishwasher several times the little Shirley face would wash off. Cavett pretended to be shocked by her lack of sentimentality. The interesting point--which wasn't surprising--is that she wasn't particularly enthralled by memories of her seven or eight year old self.

• R112, where is the pic from? I have never seen a photo of her with Garland and Rooney, and there wouldn't be a reason for them to be together (they were at different studios). It looks photo-shopped.

• OK, I researched and realize I spoke too soon. Shirley Temple did sign with MGM for a short time and was set to star in a Rooney/Garland film, but backed out.
