- I thought that Til Tuesday was pretty good. They were an example of a good 80''s pop sound. It''s a shame people only remember them for Voices Carry. And Aimee''s hair, I guess.
- There was the band member in Til Tuesday that was always mistaken for a female. poor dear.
- Yes r2, his look was hilarious. Perfectly 80''s. I liked his guitar sound.
- I loved "What About Love" a few years later.\
\
But the Voices Carry cassette got quite a workout in my college days. Every tune sounded great in the car, driving around wasted.\
\
"don''t watch. me. bleed."
- Aimee was dating the ugly drummer in the band.
- I saw Aimee in concert last year or the year before at the Vancouver Folk Fest. She came out and made a joke that her music wasn''t "folk" and she wouldn''t be playing any jigs etc (or something like that)%0D\
%0D\
Thought she looked great. She seemed very tall.
- Did you ever see the movie Liquid Sky? The actress in that is Aimee Mann-esque.
- How tall is she? She looks like she''s about 5''11, having never seen her in person. Is that about right?
- Great live, wonderful songwriter
- What is the big stir about her on the outrageous gossip thread about?
- I worked with her a long time ago. I''d say she''s about 5''8". I''m 5''9" and she was just about eye level.
- When I saw her live, she looked about seven feet tall.
R6
- Remember when she did backup vocals for Rush?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nc4GcTA83aA
- I find her insufferable, boring and most of all, full of shit.%0D\
%0D\
Always tries to act like she''s above it all, but would attend the opening of a hot dog stand provided it gave her publicity.%0D\
%0D\
Loved when she said she was going to boo and make a scene at the oscars the year she was nominated if Phil Collins was announced the winner, to make a big stink about commercial music. Naturally, nothing happened.%0D\
%0D\
%0D
- R11, what is she like in person?
- She is married to the "Romeo in Black Jeans" guy.
- Kind of a has been at this point, no?
- [quote]Loved when she said she was going to boo and make a scene at the oscars the year she was nominated if Phil Collins was announced the winner, to make a big stink about commercial music.\
\
Phil Collins? That may be one of the few scenarios where I could justify the booing. I cannot stand him.
- I liked her. She seemed a little shy. Also funny and smart and very focused on her career and having commercial success. This was before Voices Carry really hit. She''s worked very hard for the success she''s had. I don''t know for sure, but I got the feeling around her that she didn''t come from a lot of money and having some financial stability was important to her. I''m not saying she''s a craven gold digger, because that definitely wasn''t my impression of her, just that she wanted to be sure of a roof over her head and food in the refrigerator, and she thought the band might be her route to that.%0D\
%0D\
I just googled her height and found reports of 5''11 1/2 all over the web. lol. Definitely not true.
- [quote]She is married to the "Romeo in Black Jeans" guy.\
\
The song is "No Myth" and the guy is one of the Penn brothers, Michael.
- Someone in another thread said that there was gossip that she had an um, James Haven/Angie type relationship with her brother, and attributed the rumor to Blue Agave I believe. Anyone remember this being discussed on DL or anywhere else?
- [quote]I just googled her height and found reports of 5''11 1/2 all over the web. lol. Definitely not true.\
\
Then 7 feet it is!
- Does she have a drug problem?
- Her 1980''s white hair is probably her natural color now.
- I know the rumor on that one site (I think it was called the A List) which had rumors about hunreds of stars said in summary that she does some drugs and seems nice enough when not spaced out on drugs.
- She totally had the looks to be a famous model.
- She never had model looks. Her face is way too sharp. She looks like some kind of vicious bird.
- She had rock and roll''s first top 40 charting transexual as a bandmate.
- Who is the transexual?
- Her hit was actually a better video than a song.
- [quote]She never had model looks. Her face is way too sharp. She looks like some kind of vicious bird.\
\
I see what you''re saying and I guess it''s just my own personal taste. It''s a type of face I''ve always found beautiful, people either don''t like it or really like it a lot.
- I always thought that Tilda Swinton, Julianne Moore, and Aimee Mann looked great for their ages. And all of them were born in 1960.
- R28 was just joking, the Til Tuesday guitarist(male) looked like a female.
- The actor who played the abusive boyfriend in the first vdeo didn''t look nearly as hot under different lighting in the follow-up.
- I want to know what her brother/boyfriend looks like.
- OP, thank you for making this thread.\
\
Also, I''m wondering if any information has really surfaced about her family and background. Like her upbringing and stuff.\
\
I do know that she said she went to a dangerous school and that she and her brothers were harassed and bullied badly and she would hide out in rooms in the school.\
\
And she''s had a dating pattern of all hideous men. She seems a bit troubled, maybe neglectful parents or something.
- Of course it''s just a rumor about the brother, but I''d like to see what her siblings and parents look like too. I think it''s always fun to see the families of celebrities, it helps make them seem less distant.
- I wonder if the song still holds up for today''s young people.
- Go to this link and listen to these two songs: ''On Sunday'' and ''No One Is Watching You Now''.\
\
Beautiful, angelic vocals. Touching pop songs.
http://www.rhapsody.com/til-tuesday/welcome-home
- [quote]I wonder if the song still holds up for today''s young people.\
\
Voices Carry? The song was before my music listening time, and I think it sounds very solid today.
- Her music really depresses me, but I like most of it. I wonder if she depresses herself.
- The songs from Whatever are great. In particular, I should have known and Stupid Thing.
- She seems like she has suffered from depression, I would guess.
- On Sundaaaaaaayyy!
- Pavlov''s Bell is an outstanding song, I defy you to not like it. Not only is the song great, but the production is perfect. I especially love the very beginning:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dr08SIHELV8
- What''s Michael Penn like and why does he release so little music?
- All of her songs seem to be about addiction, but when she''s been asked about it she deflects and says she knows people with problems and is interested in psychology. I don''t buy that someone who doesn''t have a substance abuse problem would write obsessively about them.
- [quote]What''s Michael Penn like and why does he release so little music?\
\
He''s ugly and creepy looking.
- [quote]All of her songs seem to be about addiction, but when she''s been asked about it she deflects and says she knows people with problems and is interested in psychology. I don''t buy that someone who doesn''t have a substance abuse problem would write obsessively about them.\
\
I agree with you. Perhaps she has reformed, but either way I definitely think she''s writing about herself. She seems like she has emotionally walled herself off.
- The porn star Anita Blonde looks a lot like her.
- Is she friends with Robin Wright?
- Mama says they was magic shoes. They could take me anywhere.
Michael Penn
- She needs to gain about ten pounds.
- Did any of Til Tuesday''s other songs get MTV airplay?

- Hello ''til Tuesday fans! If you want to hear the original demo tracks for most of the Voices Carry songs, go to the link below. Its a website run by a man who worked at the studios where tons of music was recorded and he''s posting them for free downloads. Early TT pics also at the site if you navigate around. Free music. Can''t be beat.

- R56, it needs an email and a password.
- All ten would, probably, go to her hips, r53.
- Why the hips, r58?
- Is she pear shaped?
- Her song "Video" is on constant rotation on my ipod.
- She''s one of the best songwriters out there right now. All her albums of the 2000''s have been first rate. %0D\
%0D\
Not sure about her hips and their alleged pear-shapedness though.
- Nope, she is tall and lanky.
- Red Vines is my favorite.
- She''s tall, with narrow shoulders and wide hips. I''ve seen her in concert and that''s the first thing you notice when she removes her guitar.
58
- R64, I prefer those chocolate covered snow caps!
yum
- Maybe she wears hip padding because the guitar hurts her.
- So does she have a juicy caboose?
- "She needs to gain about ten pounds."\
\
She''s always looked ill and anorexic, she needs to gain more like 20-25 pounds. \
\
In that Rush video, she looks like a tall skinny man. Remember, people look heavier in photos and in film, so imagine how skinny she is in real life?\
\
Any kids with Michael Penn? Isn''t he really short and unattractive?
- [quote]Isn''t he really short and unattractive?\
\
Short, I don''t know. Unattractive? He''s a troll.
- I have an admission to make. I constantly post on DL because I don''t have nay friends. I have immsne social anxieites so my only connection is the people on here. Take care of yourselves.
yes I''m drunk
- Hi, Amy/r71!
- Magnolia the movie. She was flawless.

''Cause they don''t have any feelings
- I think Haviland Morris in Sixteen Candles looks a little like Aimee with her angular features.

- It''s amazing how many untalented people make it purely on hype, whether it be musicians, actors/actresses and fine artists. \
\
I always wonder about a remarkable songwriter or a band toiling away in some dive bar because they simply can''t get their music heard or in the hands of the right people at record companies. Yet nasally whiners like Aimee Mann get famous? \
\
Her music is so damn depressing, add a too-cool-for-the-room personality and I really don''t get her appeal at all. She conveys no emotion other than being depressed. \
\
When she performs on talk shows and the host comes over at the end, she''s emotionless, no smile towards the host, no nothing, she''s got that weird ice princess stare going on, apparently all the time. I find her insufferable.
- Aimee is much better looking imo. She also has cat eyes.
- I will absolutely kill myself.
- Her music has that effect, r79.
- Her Magnolia soundtrack, which much of the movie was actually based on, is one of the best albums of the past 20 years. Really insightful, original, potentially life-changing songs (and beautifully produced by her husband).

Mexican Wrestler
- I think my favorite is Invisible Ink now.
- At least Aimee Mann didn''t have to dress like a bimbo back in the day because she actually had talent.
- Til Tuesday got kicked off their label for low sales. She married into a Hollywood Dynasty and had enough dough from doing so to start her own record label.
- She went to some fancy music school in Boston in her youth. Sometimes plays shows around here.%0D\
%0D\
I love Save Me off the Magnolia soundtrack. VERY good.
- Til Tuesday got kicked off their label for low sales. She married into a Hollywood Dynasty and had enough dough from doing so to start her own record label.%0D\
%0D\
That is so true, r85.
- I like Save Me, Deathly, Wise Up Little Tornado. The last CD is pretty good, too.%0D\
%0D\
I think part of her "coldness" is sticking true to punk roots and not being a show biz fake. It''s about being real and perhaps she is an introvert. I thought - how would I be if I were onstage singing - maybe something like that. I don''t do bullshit and small talk.%0D\
%0D\
You can see her performing and talking a bit on the Q radio show on youtube (which is filmed)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqM6DDWCZzs&feature=channel
- The record company wanted her to do crap (stupid crap) she didn''t want to do
- Thank you, r89.
- Star Hits magazine once referred to the feminine guitar player as "Girl Robert.
Yes, I am old enough to remember Star Hits
- She''s wonderful in concert, very witty and sexy as hell. I agree about her severe look: love it or hate it. The video for 31 Today, directed by Bobcat Goldthwaite, features Morgan Murphy with Aimee playing straight man. I fucking love Mann''s lyrics.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVqBJ8DdsGA
- I do think she is an introvert and kind of weird, and it can read as being unfriendly.
- Great point, r93.
- I absolutely loved Whatever and Welcome Home, Til Tuesday''s second album. After that I never bought anymore of her stuff. I guess like Beth Orton, a couple of CD''s and you pretty much get it. Then I hear some of her new stuff, like Save Me and i am reminded of her brilliance. She is depressing but very talented. I know she comes across as above it all but the reality of it, she is pretty much above it all. She has released her own music and had success doing her own thing while rejecting the uber commercialism of the modern music industry. Good for her.
- She has said that when she was growing up, she was always a tomboy doing things like climbing trees. She was the only girl in the family and was used to being around boys. And no, I am not implying that she is gay or bi.\
\
I think she is introspective and antisocial by nature. She seems kind of awkward and disconnected. Maybe it is a form of self protection.
- And aren''t the people who post on DL above it all, too?
- Wow this thread is light on the gossip. I know people who know her... She''s on twitter under an alias - Jane Gomez. Get to it.
- She''s Tweet protected.
- [quote]Wow this thread is light on the gossip.\
\
Got any to share? Not being sarcastic, just curious.
- She was in "The Big Lebowski."
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005181/
- Yeah, tell us R98 - about Aimee Mann or Jane Gomez
- I saw her at the LA Times Festival of Books two years ago and she was very tall and thin and looked like an albino. She was talking with some other famous person after a panel, but I can''t remember who it was.
- Just read on WIkipedia that the original version of Voices carry was about a "she" but her label made her change it to "he". Is she bi? Was she in the ''80''s?
- I''ve always thought she looks like a bird.
- She was very pretty around the time of "Whatever".
http://991.com/newgallery/Aimee-Mann-Whatever-313247.jpg
- Huh, well, it seems likely if that''s accurate. I have a hard time imagining her enjoying sex with anyone, though.
- She should be bi or lesbian.
- R11, did you work with her when she worked at Newbury Comics in Boston? It was pretty well-known that she worked there before she got the big break.%0D\
%0D\
Til Tuesday played at my college''s end of school/graduation concert in Boston back in 1984 - just before Voices Carry became a hit. I was so pissed that I didn''t go...
- when ''Til Tuesday performed (Believed You Were) Lucky on letterman, censors didn''t catch her last lyric, "Oh life could be fucking great" \
and it aired in its entirety
http://peterterzian.wordpress.com/2010/07/14/til-tuesday-believed-you-were-lucky/
- Anyone else been to her Christmas shows? They''re a riot. It''s sort of like going to an anti-Christmas party, but at the same time enjoying many things that *used* to make Christmas special. Love her.\
\
While I liked "Voices Carry" enough, Til Tuesday''s third (and final) album, "Everything''s Different Now", was my favorite, and still gets plenty of listens these days.
- She went Berklee School of Music in Boston. Her Italian keyboard player was hot and is not a sculptor.
Barkley
- I played on the same bill with her a few times in the early 80''s, prior to Voices Carry, and bumped into her socially occasionally. We had mutual friends.
r11
- I like this photo of her:

- Now this is better:
http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/102943770/Disney-ABC-Television-Group
- I like her album Bachelor No2. a lot. It''s a really tight album and every songs on it is good. And from Lost in Space I like The Moth. Bus, as I said on another thread, I went to one of her shows and it was dull, dull, dull. Same with Beth Orton live.
- Have any of you heard Trespassers William, the lead signer sounds so, so, so like Aimee, take a listen.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fr4UkqK3Jy8
- lol, R115!
- hot
- So who was her girlfriend? The one she wrote Voices Carry about? And are we enjoying the irony that the record label made her change the lyrics of a song about two closeted lesbians into a song about a dysfunctional hetero relationship?
- R121, her being a lesbian would help explain her choice why she''s been with ugly men.
- But straight women end up with less attractive men all the time.
- boring straight women, not artistic attractive women
- Straight women don''t write first person songs about closeted lesbians for their pop debut albums in 1984.
- She''s straight for chrissake. Aimee''s always gotten along great with guys. In fact she''s more comfortable around guys. So women mistrust her and she knows it. That''s where "Voices Carry" comes from. \
\
Also, she''s not a druggie. Quite the opposite. She''s been very supportive of friends who go into recovery. Much of "Lost in Space" was inspired Paul Thomas Anderson; their friendship ended over his cocaine abuse.
- ''Voices Carry'' was about her recent breakup with her boyfriend who was also in the band. The gender was originally changed to protect the innocent. The label felt the song would be more commercial if she punished the guilty. Say what you will about conglom-rock, they were right.
- I have absolutely no idea if she''s a lesbian or a druggie, but it is common for artists to write things besides autobiography. Even songwriters. Robbie Robertson, for example, was not actually a veteran of the Civil War on the Confederate side. Johnny Cash did not, in fact, kill a man in Reno just to watch him die.
- It says it was about her romantic breakup with a male bandmate on wikipedia.
- k
- More about her troubled school experiences, please.
- I don''t even think she is severe looking. I think she has a great angular face, and is a classic beauty.
- Didn''t she fuck around with Elvis Costello? Not sure if it was before or after she married Penn, though.
- Met her at the bar at a Jellyfish concert with the band Dig opening (I think?). She''s very modest and unassuming in person, I did get a very dyke-y vibe. She went to Berklee School of Music.
Barkley
- No one remembers the hot Italian keyboard player who is now a sculptor?
Barkley
- She''s a bit pretentious and twee as a songwriter. She''s never had a hit on her own, and this is why. She doesn''t rock enough to connect with the masses. Unlike Kim Carnes.
- Twee? Kim Carnes?
- Didn''t she have a big falling out with David Geffen? I think she wrote a song about him, could have been "Way Back When" I think it was it has the line, " Welcome David, what''s his name again"
- Today my favorite Aimee Mann song is You Could Make A Killing.
- R136, I agree. I think that she needs to shake things up a bit and try some different styles and be less monotone and sullen. You can do darker or more personal music that is a bit more exciting. I think she does the intellectual/literate thing a bit too much with her lyrics and needs to do things with a bit more feeling and imagination.
- R140=Annie Lennox
I mean it as a compliment
- Her last album-but-one was a concept album.
- R126-R129: party-poopers%0D\
%0D\
R134 "dyke-y vibe": yeah!%0D\
%0D\
r136: I hope you are joking about the masses and Kim Carnes. Save Me!
- Yeah! She should pull a Liz Phair and go for that mass appeal!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-F3eZS0ueYg
- Um, I think the "intellectual/literate thing" is badly needed in the age of American Idol, GWB, reality TV, Sarah Palin, Facebook, texting, etc etc.
- Her music skews oldies at this point. She needs a major revamping a''la Melissa Manchester when she did ''You Should Hear How She Talks About You'' if she hopes to keep up with the young folks.
- Maybe she just wants to make her own kind of music. Some artist are content with that.
- She''s 50. It makes sense that her audience wouldn''t be teenagers.
- Lisa Germano is over 50, and gets a cool young audience, but I guess Geek the Girl is a million miles away from her work. But I think you can be ovey 50 and get a young audience, like The Go Go''s Our Lips Are Sealed is still a uber-hot song among cool LA kids.
- I heard her say she gets all ages at her concerts.
- I wasn''t saying cheesy pop(or even pop) or mass appeal. I meant something a bit less dry.
- Her music is pop as far as genre goes.
- Mann is a pop songwriter. She has plenty of catchy hooks.
- Well, she is not going to shake her booty like Shakira.
- love this picture
http://www.manchestereventsguide.co.uk/img/full/pop/aimee-mann.jpg
- Did you know she was in a Twitter War with Ice T?

And his response shows that he is both a jerk and thin skinned. Arrogant moron.

- yes, I like the photo of her in glasses, too
R156
- Comment from the talkback section:\

"Nobody else is bothered by the fact that he%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%99s threatening violence over some passing comment that some singer made about him on Twitter? Seriously?"\

And many people on the internet are supporting him and think that what he said was cool. Am I in the twilight zone or something? Why is he getting this type of a ''pass'' and even support?
- Told you I was hardcore hot.
Aimee Mann
- Imdb says her height is 5''11.5" which I believe after seeing her live
- She looks like she''s that tall to me, too.
- bump
- Her soundtrack cut from "Back to the Beach" is awful, she''s just not a "fun rocker" type. More cerebral.
barklina
- [quote]Her soundtrack cut from "Back to the Beach" is awful, she''s just not a "fun rocker" type. More cerebral.\
\
Agreed. She needs to be a bit more lively.
- Why are people coming on her saying she doesn''t shake her booty like Shakira or aspire to the greatness of Kim Carnes? Are you crazy?
- "Til Tuesday got kicked off their label for low sales. She married into a Hollywood Dynasty and had enough dough from doing so to start her own record label."
Hollywood Dynasty? Really? Sean Penn has the money, not her husband Michael, what did he have like one semi hit song?
Are you saying Aimee Mann got money from Sean Penn to start her own label, just marrying Michael Penn simply guaranteed that Sean Penn would give her money? What bullshit.
It's actually not all that difficult to start a small label, you simply start producing your own CDs.
You sell them through your website, sell them mail order. She's already an established musician, so her core fan base knows who she is, she doesn't even need to promote herself. Of course, she can still go through the motions of sending the CDs to magazines, TV talk show producers, radio stations etc.
Blank CDs are cheap enough, then you find a place to mass produce them, a print house to do the insets etc. She probably has tons of connections to graphic design people for her CD artwork. Bottom line: it doesn't take much money to produce your own CDs.
I doubt she needed "Hollywood Dynasty" money to start her own label.
- r168 has never heard of Sean Penn''s parents.
- Maybe she whored herself out to these ugly men in order to get her foot in the door.
- She was born in the back of Cadillac.
- Hi
- Bump.
- She reminds me of people who grew up in cults.
- She boxes, too - as in boxing
- She''s look cute with a boxer''s nose.
- Next?
- She was blackballed from Lilith Fair because she refuses to change her offensive last name.
- OK, that''s kind of funny, R178.
- Why do these threads always descend to accusations of whoring? Aimee Mann has talent. She''s a songwriter. She provides her own material. She''s stayed true to her own aesthetic...\
\
Why would you think she''d got ahead (got ahead? She''s not even mainstream...) by fucking anybody?
- I love Aimee Mann and til tuesday. How much $ does someone have like Aimee, who has been sort of on the radar with a following but never commercially uber-successful? Like how much does she pull in a year? I can never figure that out...
- What planet are you on? She is famous. She is on the radar. She''s very well known and sells a lot of records.
- Yes but my question is.... what sort of fortune has she amassed? Is she rich?
- I think artists like Mann make most of the money touring. I can''t imagine that her record sales are high enough these days to make her "rich." I mean, the whole record sales business has suffered in the last ten years. Many artist sell their music directly to their fans on their web sites. For some of them it means complete creative freedom and an immediate report with the people who like their music. It''s the most honest give and take that there is out there right now.
- I mean, RAPPORT.
184
- I don't know how you folks who are still ardent fans of hers can do it. I have seen Aimee live more times than I can count, from the til tuesday days through whatever that album was about the boxer and junkies. I mean, she used to nervously wait on me when she was a clerk at the original Newbury Comics, so my experience with her goes way back. "Welcome Home" is still one of my all-time favorite albums. I've seen her play on store roofs in Kenmore Square, in clubs, in theaters, on city hall plaza, in a boat in the middle of a lagoon outside of a mall in Cambridge.
But now? EEEEeesh. I finally had to admit that objectively, Aimee is the only performer I have ever known who has managed to become a worse singer as time as gone by. Most people who play out over a lifetime pick up tricks and strategies that make them stronger. But not Aimee. She now sings so nasally that the words are indecipherable to people who don't already know them. And nowadays she's so soporific, it's awful.
The last time I saw a good Aimee Mann concert was one of the Acoustic Vaudeville shows with her husband Michael Penn and emcee Patton Oswalt, not long after Magnolia. The juxtaposition of their styles and Oswalt's humor made for a fulfilling evening. The last time I saw her, though, was a free outdoor show for that boxing junkie album and all the songs sounded like each other. Between songs at one point she said, "Well.... things have gone from bad to worse for our hero..." and my friends and I took that as our cue to leave.
Unlistenable, uninspired, unalive.
- R180, because the guys she dated or married have been HIDEOUS across the board.
- R187\
\
And? She writes her own songs!
- Well at the least, she has some major issues.
- r189\
\
Yeah, what a weirdo!
ZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz
- at least she doesn''t have to sing "Come On-a My House"
- Here are a few pictures of Aimee pre Til Tuesday(with her previous band, The Young Snakes). She is STUNNING in the last pic at the bottom:
http://www.aimeemann.com/messageboard/viewthread.php?tid=3276
- I like the second-last photo - ANDROGYNOUS!
- Yes, she definitely had a tomboy look in that one.\
\
"Dr. Lecter? Dr. Lecter? Dr. Lecter? Dr. Lecter?"
- First - I adore Aimee Mann.\
\
I''m still going to tell this story. She was a wacky chick in mid 80s. She was living in Brookline and I was managing an upscale pizza place.\
\
For months on end she would come everyday and order the same the thing. She must had done this at least 35 days in row. Artichokes, ricotta on whole wheat. She was like clock work. 5 pm everyday.\
\
Even on my days off - I would see her walking down my street with a pizza box from my restaurant.\
\
She would go away for a few weeks and come back and then order a different combo pizza. It would start again for weeks on end and always at 5 pm.\
\
I just assumed she had OCD and an eating disorder.
- Plus, Aimee doesn''t have to sing any songs from her Til Tuesday days.
- That''s actually an interesting story, r195. And perhaps an interesting glimpse into her character. what were your impressions of her when she came in, how did she act? Normal, wacky, shy?
- r197 - she was extremely shy. I think it was slightly embarrassing for her. She had to realize that it was odd to be ordering the same thing day after day after. Those artichokes must have been her cocaine. \
\
I felt bad for her and a little protective. The staff would always joke about her and I would tell them to shut up. Frankly she was our best customer. One day for lunch she actually came in and sat down. She was with a suit type guy. \
\
When she finally made it - I was so happy for her. She had a very sweet way about her.
r195
- Thanks r198, very informative post. I always suspected that she was very shy instead of cold, but it was hard to tell for sure. I wonder what her deal was about ordering the same thing obsessively every day, sounds like the girl had some issues. Did you see her hanging around any other people at all?
- Did Aimee ping at all in person? Just wondering.
- Aimee seems a little awkward here. And she admits to drug use:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ll7eXsFdv8I&feature=related
- Druggie druggie druggie.
Joan Rivers. Remember when I used to say that?
- I saw til tuesday on this tour in ''86 and that was when I knew it was all but finished for the band. They did "What About Love," her greatest song up to that point with background tapes for the "woo ooo ooo ooos" and a session musician playing bass. The show I saw she introduced the guy and explained he was there "So I can dance around a little." Awkward and horrible.
- "Druggie druggie druggie."\
\
Maybe dabbled early on but has been clean since the late 80s.
- My best friend''s brother dated her for a while. Said she was batshit crazy. At first he thought it was the "eccentric artistic weirdo" thing, but after a while he realized she was just completely crackers. He, and we, are still fans though. Love her music, but grateful I''m not in a relationship with her!
- What did she do that was nutty?
- R205, details on how she was genuinely crazy. Also, when did they date?\
\
And was Aimee a sex freak or anything, anything weird romantically/emotionally/sexually about her? I''m very intrigued, give us a ton of details.
- do you think aimee mann is a millionaire?
- She is a millionaire. And she has a prosthetic foot.
Marion Cotillard
- I knew her when she was with Jules Shear. She went from being an incredibly charismatic life of the party type of woman, to being a completely infantile cooing girlfriend. She literally couldn''t stand to be alone with him. Wouldn''t let him get his hair cut by himself - she was serpentine, the way her arms were always all over him. Kind of pathetic. Then she practically had a nervous breakdown when Jules went back to his wife.\
\
She clearly has had a lot of therapy and I hear that the relationship with Michael Penn is healthy. Good for her - though her music suffers.
- hmmm
- Jules was an enormous fuggo.

- Many years ago - when ''Til Tuesday was hot - Aimee sat directly in front of me at an Elvis Costello concert. I didn''t speak to her, but she seemed nice enough and behaved normally. My main memory, though, is that she was without question the palest person I have ever seen. She was white, like a glass of milk. It was disconcerting.
- A tall glass of milk.
- Her music reminds me of a time I was depressed and smoked a lot. I don''t listen to her any more because it is like an invitation to go back.
- Her music doesn''t have enough emotional intensity to it to make me feel bad.
- I agree with you, r226.
- I can''t believe I conversed with someone who saw Aimee Mann ordering a strange pizza. Thank you, Datalounge.
- well, her music and lyrics are certainly emotionally and intellectually intense enough to bum me the fuck out. What do you consider intense? Ani DiFranco wailing off-key about shaved heads?
- Her music is boring, period.

- What''s the old bird up to now?
- I don''t know r232, but I recently came across this picture of her and was stunned by her beauty:

Wow. Seriously.
- She looks like Peter Hinwood in that picture to me, but to each their own.
- Anything about her family or her youth?

- Aimee Mann is so rich, she has a solid gold toilet in her tour bus and her entourage of seven is comprised entirely of tiny cake-making dwarves.%0D\

And she viciously slapped one of them when they tried to pass off a petit fours as a full sized cake.
VICOUSLY SLAPPED!
- I can''t believe this whole thread is about Aimee Mann. In any case, I saw her act in a play called "Good Morning Miss Dove" when she was a junior at my high school (although I was still in junior high at the time). She played Miss Dove. In her senior year she transferred out to some magnet school in the city (this was in suburban Richmond, Virginia). She seemed very tall to me even at that age. She''s just very angular. I remember she had a brother who was equally blond and gigantically tall.\
\
My life is too short to read through this whole thread so I hope nobody has already talked her brief high school acting career.
- Was she good, r238? Did you know any rumors about her?
- Also, did her brother look like her, facially?
- bump
- I live near her. She looks down when she comes out of her house and will not look anyone in the eye. In five years she has spoken to me once. She seems...well....odd. Ironically, Michael Penn, who has the gruffest look about him, is actually friendly.
- She was nice to me at that concert years ago, so she''s cool. I like her music. I saw Tuesday open for Hall & Oates at the Meadowlands and I also saw them at The Ritz I think. They really toured a lot back when they had the hit. I want to meet the hot Italian guy from L.I. who played keyboards for her.
- bump
- I think Aimee Mann doesn''t feel she has anything to prove anymore. She can make the kind of music she wants to without selling herself short and looking like a sex object.
- That''s true R245. I just wish she''d do something that was a but more lively.
- Plus, Aimee has her own record label.
- She''s very good looking.
- I do hope she has a lot of money saved up.
- Why?
- She was hilarious in "Portlandia" playing herself as a cleaning lady being accosted by her bosses for attention.
- :)

- She''s kind of monotone.
- 1. saw Aimee Mann at a solo show at City Winery in NYC about 2 years ago. sold out though smallish, initmate venue. crowd ranged from early thirties to late fifties or thereabouts. show was fantastic - she was a committed performer, was not phoning it in. played from her entire catalogue.%0D

2. was in Mt. Snow Vermont about 2 1/2 years ago (southwest corner of the state), after dinner we were in a little bar next to a resteraunt on the main highway through the town (do not recall the name). about 25 total people there drinking. not a dive - kind of a classy place for the area. in the corner, a duo were playing the piano and electric guitar, the piano player singing. we gravitated over there because they were quite good. one of the locals leaned over to me and told me that the guitarist was the gut from Til Tuesday. my group starting conferring because HE STILL LOOKS LIKE A WOMAN!!!! once we remembered that point, we were more than ready to believe it was him. they started to take requests and we ended the evening with the whole bar rocking out and singing several Stones tunes and Stairway to Heaven. when i got back to the city i googled him and found out that he does in fact live in Vermont and it was probably him!! whole thing totally surreal.%0D

3. i believe Aimee Mann did collaborate with Elvis Costello at some point. At The Other End of The Telescope appears on both Elivs Costello and Aimee Mann albums, performed by each. just googled it - they wrote it together.

- Do Aime and her half sister, Gretchen Seichrist, have the same mother or the same father? Also, how many other siblings does Aimee have? Someone else on this thread said she has a brother, who she allegedly had a strange relationship with.
Any more about her family?
- Sounds like her shyness may have been from being picked on:
"Born August 9, 1960, Aimee Mann has come a long way since her childhood days in Richmond, Virginia. At the age of 4, Aimee's mother kidnapped her and took her to England, where she spent the year away from her father and brothers.
When she finally returned to Virginia at the age of 5, she grew up the only girl in the family, outnumbered by her father, brothers and stepbrothers (her mother did not return to live with the family, and it took years for Aimee to reconcile with her).
Aimee's tomboyish, yet sexy looks can be attributed to her all-male surroundings. The future punk star had trouble fitting in while in junior high, where her and her brothers attended an inner-city school, and were an evident minority in the school hallways.
After having to hide out in the school library and being tormented in school, her family relocated to the suburbs. The Midlothian High School 1978 grad was already beginning to think about her career goals, which always had something to do with the arts. She started out with painting and drawing, but then decided to turn to music."
- Well, it was probably more than being picked on.

- Love her.
- I'm hoping we can get more gossip and/or personal information about her. Please post some more!

- 1. I can't believe I scanned this whole thread.
2. The oddest thing about it is the troll who pops up repeatedly to proclaim how ugly every man Aimee dates or marries is.
It was almost disappointing to discover her husband Michael Penn is fairly average-looking.

- Did you enjoy the thread?

- Is she eccentric?
- Any more gossip about her family and personal life? She strikes me as seeming kind of weirdly detached and closed off, like she can't emotionally connect with people and doesn't care to. I suspect she may have come from a cold family or something.
- I was in National Record Mart in 1995, I believe -- it may have been '96 -- and they were playing the just-released album I'm With Stupid. "That's Just What You Are" was the song playing. I asked the clerk what it was, bought it, took it home and every single song was good. I was a teenager at the time and thought I was so cool. I still remember that album as being really catchy with great lyrics, but if I played it now (it's been at least a decade since I've heard it) I'm sure I'd find it boring.
Her lyrics, when they bug the shit out of me, seem like exercises in cleverness. Clever rhymes, words that you don't usually hear in songs, metaphors that are beaten to death. A lot of 3rd-person narrative, too, which is weird and not very engaging. But maybe it's just me. Her arrangements and production are often too "exquisite" as well.
Not surprising that Penn is a nice guy. I don't think he's ugly either.
Those of you--or is it just one of you?--suggesting that she married into money so she could record her music are morons who probably don't know much about music or about Aimee Mann.
Anyone got any dirt on her former friend P.T. Anderson? I remember him admitting to his own closeted homosexuality in an interview once.
- [quote]Anyone got any dirt on her former friend P.T. Anderson?
Former?
- One of the posts in this thread said she'd ended her friendship with Anderson because of his cocaine abuse. If I'm not mistaken.
- Is Aimee a drug abuser, or was she?
- I posted this awhile ago in one of the rock gossip threads here. A former work colleague, we were actually friends for awhile before she moved across the country, was married to a jazz drummer. His band happened to be opening for for Aimee's band during a brief tour. IIRC, this was during the early or mid 90s.
The drummer is a very nice guy and an extremely talented drummer. He's played with some very famous people in jazz and rock. He simply went in to say 'Hello' to Aimee and her band before the first gig his band was doing with her.
My friend was mortified how horrible Aimee had treated her husband. As he approached Aimee, she coldly started him down, then after he introduced himself and extended his hand, she completely ignored him and continued to stare and give him a disgusted look. Aimee did not utter one word to him.
My friend suggested to her husband that they go back to his band's dressing room, because Aimee didn't seem to want to be bothered.
It wasn't as if the drummer simply walked in, someone involved with Aimee's band happily let him. He was a quiet guy and not aggressive at all.
From what I've hear about Aimee Mann over the years, she seems mentally disturbed. If you don't want to be bothered, you can at the very least be polite, shake someone's hand, then tell them you are too busy to chat, but to not respond AT ALL to the drummer and not say anything, points to some mental problems.
Meanwhile, the drummer had later toured with Lea DeLaria's backup band and he said Lea was a riot and very cool to him and the rest of her band.
It appears besides having mental issues, Aimee Mann is a pretentious phony baloney with a very high opinion of herself and her 'talent'.
She continued to be cold to the drummer and his band during the rest of the short tour. If she felt threatened by the drummer's band, then I know IS mentally ill. The drummer's band's music couldn't be more different from the depressing sludge Aimee does.
Why a fusion jazz band (think Weather Report/Jaco Pastorious/John McLaughlin) were booked to open for her band in the first place, who the hell knows.
- Another Aimee Mann story: I used to get Radio City house seats from a friend who worked there. He didn't listen to rock music, so most of his four house seats he'd always offer to me for concerts I wanted to see.
The tickets weren't free, they were the regular price, I'd simply pick them up at the RC box office after he gave them my name and told them I was using his reserved seats. The house seats consisted of the same area of seats available for every show to Radio City workers. His specific four seats were always in the third or fourth row, center.
As my friends and I were leaving the concert, it was either INXS or Bryan Ferry, I noticed Aimee Mann and Jules Shear sitting all the way in the back orchestra. She was sullen and looked angry, it was that same dead stare, she looked like an alabaster statue, she was hard to miss in a sea of people dressed in black.
As I got closer, I heard her arguing with Jules Shear, telling him she didn't want to leave until the orchestra had cleared because: "People will bother me, they ALL recognize me. They're LOOKING at me!" I almost laughed out loud, I doubt everyone leaving recognized her, the friends I was with had no idea who she was! People were probably looking because her skin was so PALE.
I stopped for awhile to listen to her argument, telling my friends I'd lost my program, ha! I pretended to look for it.
I was able to hear Aimee's stupid rant. Shear was sitting there trying not to answer her. She seemed so angry, just plain crazy and delusional. Wouldn't still remaining in your seat while tons of people were leaving, draw MORE attention to her?!
Mann was well past her pop hit fame, yet there she was drawing attention to herself by loudly arguing with her boyfriend that she didn't want to be recognized!
R276
- Hilarious, self-deprecating, relentlessly talented. She experienced monster celebrity fame early in her career as a result of one hit song/video and didn't like it anyway when that blip in time passed. Focused on pursuing life as a musician - not as a celebrity. Has worked tirelessly all these years working, touring and continually developing her talent and challenging herself and her audiences.

Mr.%20Harris
- Thanks for those stories! I'm not surprised, she definitely does seem disturbed. She probably has more people than average looking at her because of her beauty than because they recognized her. The pizza story in this thread and being harrassed at the school she went to seem to confirm this. Also she has a weird half sister who is also a musician.
I'm guessing that our DL team of experts could make a good stab at what her issues are.
- R278, NOTHING in Mann's public persona points to her being "Hilarious, self-deprecating, relentlessly talented".
As for her music, which I can try to separate from what I've heard about her, it's really not all that great. Her songs are not memorable, they all sound the same, they are extremely depressing and sung in a monotone nasally voice.
Aimee Mann seems to get the same blind fan adulation and devotion people like Tori Amos seem to get. I don't get either of these women and why they continue to have such rabid fan bases. Their music never seems to grow, just because Mann is deemed an indie recording artist doesn't mean she's not stuck in a groove, she is.
I guess R278 must know her personally and are simply here to champion her, because from all accounts, it appears Mann has mental issues and is rude. Her music isn't all that wonderful, that she deserves such blind devotion and glowing accolades!
- Aimee Mann remakes her Voices Carry music video(kind of) 27 years later!

- Anyone heard her new album? I think I'm just going to buy it. I haven't listened to her stuff in years and I'm curious where she's at musically.
- The new Charmer CD is Awesome! She has written some deep lyrucs about the dark side of people and their manipulative ways. But the melody's are just so enjoyable. She is one of the most prolific writers of our time and I always have one of her songs flowing through my head. The song GUMBY is about the show Oarders and how it touched her. Every time I hear it it makes me want to cry - how bad some people make their own hell.
Saw her at the Berklee Permance Center - it was an intimate venue and Ted Leo (The Pharmacists) opened up for her and he was really good, but she was amazing!! Really, I think she gave a great show!!! BUY the Record! You won't be sorry!!!
