- Steve McQueen was a man-child who was cool and smart. His appeal is that he is a guy''s guy. Your straight friend probably thought you would be attracted to those aspects of McQueen that are cool and manly. Straight men usually see him as the man. He like d fast cars, dated hot girls, and has a devil may care way that every guy wants to project. And "Bullitt" is a great film with a great chase scene.

mmmm mmmmmmmmm
- OP, he was probably just TOO MUCH man for you!
- I heard his dick was to die for
- Who would be the equivalent "guy''s guy" today? Crowe? Clooney? Banderas?
- I know many straight guys who have a "man crush" on him
- He always looked as if he had a mouthful of cum and couldn''t find a place to discreetly spit.
- The only thing good about Bullitt is the car chase scene. SRSLY. So boring.%0D\
%0D\
Watch Papillon and The Great Escape, OP. You''ll see the appeal of McQueen.
- There''s a clip of him and wife Nellie dancing at The Daisy in the 60s and he''s got a tight pair of white jeans and he''s all wired up and shaking his ass looking like a hairburner in heat!
Barkley
- He''s passably pretty, but I''m really sick reading about him as a style icon in the mens'' magazines. Aviator frames, jeans, fitted jackets. Yeah, we get it already.
- In a previous thread someone posted an old black and white pic of him with his fly open.
- The chemistry between McQueen and Faye on THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR was palpable. Great movie.%0D\

Daniel Craig is the modern day Steve McQueen. Clooney is too faggy and Euro and Damon is too bland and too much of a family man. No one else comes close to Craig in that comparison. %0D\
%0D\
Craig is a much better actor than McQueen ever was though, but he hasn''t really had the chance to show it in any big vehicle yet. Watch SYLVIA and MUNICH (written by DL fav Tony Kushner) for proof of Craig''s acting ability.
- I agree that Craig is the closest thing to McQueen nowadays. I can see him in something like Bullitt. McQueen was divine. He always looked fantastic, the man was able to wear clothes well. He played the type of guys who could walk alone. Gorgeous.
-
He was sexy but not conventionally beautiful.
http://theselvedgeyard.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/steve-mcqueen-19551.jpg%3Fw%3D600%26h%3D770
- If I had to compare him to anyone today, it would be Jude Law
- Dead, you know.
- Yup, Craig is the perfect analogy. I can see him in any of McQueen's iconic roles.
As against that, I can't see that McQueen would have played the suicidal rough trade younger partner of a famous artist, but you never can tell.
- He was from that generation of male American movie stars who came across as "real." Steve McQueen was like somebody you might have been in the Army with.
- His first real stardom in the early to mid-60s was a link back to the young Marlon Brando. His earthiness was an antidote to the slick pretty boys of the Rock Hudson/Tony Curtis variety.
He led the way to Jack Nicholson and that type of rebel movie star that was predominant by the late 60s.
- Didn't he have really bad hemorrhoids?

- Steve looks like an old friend of mine. When I told him who he looked like, his reply was, "Who?"
- [quote] Who would be the equivalent "guy's guy" today?
Well for decades it's been Brad Pitt and if you asked most straight guys today they'd probably say the same thing. I don't know any straight man who doesn't have at least one copy of Fight Club. Brad's an icon.
- Steve McQueen was a GORGEOUS STUD.
- It had nothing to do with McQueen. This movie is all about THE classic movie car case,
Hemi versus Mustang.
Watching that fixed rear axle rabbit hop across the highway was worth sitting through the entire lame soap opera parts of the movie.
- I read a McQueen bio where they had a funny anecdote about "Bullitt". Robert Vaughn had a line where he said to McQueen "To use your vernacular ..." McQueen got pissed and said, "Nobody uses words like that. Get rid of it." Then the director said he needed a replacement and they all thought for a second and Vaughn said, "Parlance?" and that ended up in the movie.
- Agree with r18. Men love(d) him because they felt like he was cool and they could have a beer with him and talk guy stuff.
Woman love(d) him because he was sort of "bad boy".
He was a bad-boy-next-door type.
- Craig isn't really a great comparison. In terms of style, he would be nothing without Tom Ford. Craig puts in the hours at the gym but his style is completely manufactured by others. Pre-Bond, he had no style.
He's also an actor. He has no persona on screen like McQueen had. Craig is masculine, sure, but he's not alpha like McQueen. Pre-Bond, he was pretty much a character actor. It wasn't until he did Layer Cake that people thought he could carry a film.
- It was much better on the big screen in a theater than it is on TV.
- My appreciation of Steve McQueen was really soured by the fact that he was very abusive (physically and mentally) towards Ali MacGraw.
- OP, rent a movie called "The Reivers" and get back to us. ALL your questiones will be answered. Oh and it's a great movie too!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/39665917@N02/3749090208/
- OP, Bullitt is one of the best SF car chase-porn flicks. The whole TV show Streets of San Francisco ("A Quinn-Martin Production!") milked the genre dry. But NOTHING tops the chase scene in Babs' What's Up Doc.

- I thought he had a great ass but if he had "hemmies" forget it. I read bits and pieces of various bios about him and apparently he had a bizarre childhood. His mother was an on again off again protitute and he himself, before getting into the movies in Hollywood, was a prostitute. And yes I think that straight guys have "man crushes" on him and know one who does. As a gay guy I wouldn't have a crush on him but would have fucked and spanked him (after he got rid of the hemmies).

- [quote]OP, rent a movie called "The Reivers"
R32 is right on the money. Great movie, early and delightful John Williams soundtrack (Spielberg took notice of Williams because of it).
However as much as I love The Reivers, Love With a Proper Stranger may be a better example of McQueen's skills. Great understated movie with a wonderful early 60s NYC as the backdrop. And Natalie Wood was equally great, as was Tom Bosley pre-Happy Days. Just a sweet, surprisingly forward thinking at the time movie.
- Meant to add also that in his bio in Wikipedia it was/is alleged that he had sex with his own mother.

I loved Steve in 'The Reivers'. What a tender and humorous movie and he was not the typical McQueen in that film.
In 'Love with a Proper Stranger' he is also very expressive and moving as an actor.
I also loved him in 'Papillon', 'The Enemy of People', 'The Sand Pebbles' and in 'Baby the Rain Must Fall'.
From his hits i found him terrific in 'The Towering Inferno'.
As a man...what a sexy troubled bastard he was!
A bastard yes! Lol.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/68/Steve_McQueen_Neile_Adams_1960.JPG
- Yeah he was a terrific actor but in The Reivers he had a the rare chance to be funny AND sexy as Hell. Even I knew that as a pre-pubescent sitting there in the theater with my family.
- Bland white guy. Dime a dozen.
- R38 you are a tender and funny sugar too!
:)
Steve McQueen...God, i'm looking forward to read one of his biographies. I know a lot of unflattering stuff about his chaotic personal life but i would love to read more.
He was a troubled man and an attractive one...

Who gives a shit about that Suzanne who ever she was? She had just an uncredited role in Bullitt. I also don't find her face appealing at all, why you mentioned her?

- [quote]My appreciation of Steve McQueen was really soured by the fact that he was very abusive (physically and mentally) towards Ali MacGraw.
Not an excuse, but maybe a reason was he was sick. From everything I heard he fought long and hard to beat his Cancer and maybe took it out on her. He died only two years after their divorce.
-
He also had a very rough childhood. His mother was a drunkard and some sources imply that she might have been a whore as well.
Steve was ashamed of her. One time he met her at a bar that he was hanging out and she was making a fool of herself by drooling to his friends and then she stumbled like all heavy drunkards do and fell down. She was an embarrassment to Steve and he wanted to be as far as possible from her.
I read about this incident in John Gilmore's
'Laid Bare'.
By the way John Gilmore writes very negative things about Steve in this book. You should read it. It shocked me but..from the other hand not really. Men like Steve are troubled and carry a lot in their closets.

Steve's idols were Marlon Brando and James Dean.
When he was still a young striving actor, he was spending a lot of time in the mirror mimicking Brando's or Dean's face expressions.

- In 1947, STEVE MCQUEEN joined the United States Marine Corps and was quickly promoted to Private First Class and assigned to an armored unit. Initially, he reverted to his prior rebelliousness, and as a result was demoted to private seven times. He went AWOL (absent without leave) by failing to return after a weekend pass had expired. He instead stayed away with a girlfriend for two weeks, until the shore patrol caught him. He resisted arrest and as a result spent 41 days in the brig.
After this, McQueen resolved to focus his energies on self-improvement and embraced the Marines' discipline. He saved the lives of five other Marines during an Arctic exercise, pulling them from a tank before it broke through ice into the sea. He was also assigned to an honor guard responsible for guarding then-U.S. President Harry Truman's yacht. McQueen served until 1950 when he was honorably discharged.

In '' The Getaway'' with Ali MacGraw.
During this film MacGraw fell in love with costar Steve McQueen and broke up with her husband, Paramount production executive Robert Evans. The couple divorced in 1972, after MacGraw began an affair with Steve. She and McQueen were married in 1973. They divorced in 1978.

- Very underrated actor: watch "Love With the Proper Stranger," "The Reivers," "The Sand Pebbles," and "Baby, the Rain Must Fall." Much more there than what you see in "The Towerning Inferno" and "Bullit."
I read he was quite right-wing. His childhood was very troubled, and more than a few bios suggest that he was trade when he came to Hollywood. I can certainly understand the appeal--a "straight" guy who could go both ways who was not "fem."
ranger
- "Bland white guy. Dime a dozen."
Yeah, there are so many "white guys" out there with the good looks and sexuality and screen presence of Steve McQueen. You wish, you dumb twat!
"Darwin Porter's Hollywood Babylon detailed Steve McQueen's gay life. Some list containing him surfaced in Hollywood and he panicked. Read it."
Of course you realize that anything Darwin Porter says is total bullshit, don't you? If you're so gullible as to take Darwin's Porter's lunacy for the gospel truth, then you are too stupid to live.
- Well, yes i also think that Darwin Porter is probably an unhinged liar. Fortunately, i realized that before i buy one of his books. I read most of Brando Unzipped in Google.Books for free and i stopped it when it dawned on me that this guy Porter was way over the top. I believe that this book betrayed him and made him seem as a fake and a tale-teller.
However, i don't take a vow that everything he wrote are all lies. I mean, there must be some evidence even the slightest in his extravagant biographies, otherwise, he wouldn't get publized.
On the other hand, maybe he would. !!!!!
- R80, now i noticed your post. It escaped me before. What you wrote is right in my eyes.
Yes i prefer Steve in those movies too, although i think that his performance in ''The Towering Inferno'' was pretty solid. Yes, i also have read about his troubled childhood and i also have read that he was DETERMINED to be a famous actor. He had expressed to some of his surroundings that he would do anything in order to be a success and go to the top, even sleeping with men. He was desperate to be a popular actor, a success in the film industry, he needed to escape his former life.
There are rumors that want him to be a rent boy for some period of his youth.
I find these rumors quite believable if i keep in mind his previous statement.
- Darwin said Steve was all over Horst Bucholz in the Magnificent Seven. Can't say as I blame him.
- Darwin wrote a tell-all biography about Steve McQueen. Apparently he did porno. I haven't read it, but this thread piques my curiosity. Anybody read it?
-
No, i don't trust Darwin Porter.
- Darwin Porter's biographies are a joke and clearly filled with lies, hearsay, it reads like fan fiction. Every hot actor that ever existed was sleeping with another hot actor.
- I never saw the appeal of McQueen either. But for many men of the 60's and 70's McQueen represented "rebellious cool". He drove fast cars and motorcycles, dressed down, had attitude toward the Hollywood of the time and dated young chicks. To my way of thinking a really boring life.
