- I think Leo is gay but I don''t think he qualifies as an "older" celebrity. He''s only 35 and it''s not that unusual for a man that age to be single.\
\
An "older" but still single celebrity is Dana Delany. At the age of 54, she still says in interviews that she''s not the maryying kind.
- [quote]I assure you people like Leo do not have the same pressures as "most people."\
\
Most people find "playing the field" emotionally unsatisfying after thirty. I suppose the only pressure Leo is under is convincing people that he likes women so much that he can''t commit to just one.
- Average age for marriage in U.S.\

For men: 27\
\
Over 35 and never married, and heterosexual? Highly unusual.
- [quote]Most people find "playing the field" emotionally unsatisfying after thirty. \
\
So why do so many marriages end in divorce? Isn''t it better to never marry if you recognise you are never really going to commit. Doesn''t that show a greater level of personal understanding than someone who marries but suspects they might cheat?
- There are nearly 93 million unmarried Americans over age 18, representing roughly 42% of the adult population. - U.S. Census Bureau. “America’s Families and Living Arrangements: 2007.”\
\
Unmarried Americans head more than 51 million households. - U.S. Census Bureau. “America’s Families and Living Arrangements: 2007.”\
\
In 2005, unmarried households became the majority of all U.S. households. - U.S. Census Bureau. American Community Survey: 2005. \
\
8.9% of the married adult population is aged 18-29 years, compared to 33.7% of the unmarried adult population, while 3.2% of the married adult population is aged 80 years or over, compared to 6.5% of the unmarried adult population. - U.S. Census Bureau. American Community Survey: 2005.
- While it''s true that increasing numbers of Americans are single, it''s still relatively uncommon in the U.S. for an adult to go through life without marrying at all.\
\
Take these 2008 statistics from the Census Bureau, for example (the most recent I could find):\
\
-- For men ages 40 to 44, 19.7% have never married.\
\
-- For men ages 45 to 54, 14.3% have never married.\
\
-- For men ages 75 and over, only 3.8% have never married.\
\
-- For women ages 40 to 44, 13.5% have never married.\
\
-- For women ages 45 to 54, 10.3% have never married.\
\
-- And for women ages 75 and over, only 3.8% have never married.\
\
In the future, it''s likely that fewer and fewer people will be marrying, so these figures will change. But I still suspect that most people will marry at least once -- particularly once gay marriage becomes legal throughout the U.S.

- Gerard Butler has never married. Claims he was in a long term relationship, but has never been see with who ever it was in public. Has been seen "kissing" random women and, rarely, "accompanying" random women to certain events. These women are usually "models." Sometimes not. Butler is 41. Has very diligently feveloped the reputation of being a complete whore as far as women go. Lives in Chelsea, and his long-time manager is gay. The gay manager is in a long term relationship woth an architect.
- I did think for a while, that Leo was gay. I don''t anymore. I like the list we''re compiling. I get tired of seeing the same half dozen names trotted out when we talk about closet cases. This thread gives us the opportunity to really think about it, and "cast a larger net."

So that''s approaching 30% of all Americans. In the UK the marriage rate is the lowest it''s ever been around 20 in every 1,000, since 1981 the number of marriages has fallen by a third. So celebrities not marrying isn''t unusual at all.

I think this is an interesting thread. In the case of certain celebrities, I think they are simply just too selfish to be married. I think most men and women in that stratosphere find no reason to be committed when they can get whoever and whatever they want. And if you think there is always something better looking/younger/richer around the corner, why settle? not a judgement just an observation.\
\
For those of us in the normal world, I think a lot of us saw our parents crappy marriages and didn''t want that. In the past society has pressured people to get married and stay married even if you are miserable. I think it is simply becoming more acceptable for people to stay single, and hey more power to them if they know marriage and kids are not for them, better to be honest up front and then no one get hurt.

They are straight. Both of them are successful over-achievers and always have been. My mother thinks they have a fear of failure and would want unreasonable guarantees that tehre is a 99% chance of "success" as in for life. And there are no guarnatees of course. I agree, tho. I think the fear of failure really plays into it. Especially if you''re an over-achiever type.

Delaying marriage isn''t the same thing as never marrying. You can''t bet your money that the % of people who are never married at 75 probably won''t change that much over the years. You get a lot of social and financial benefits from marrying. That is why gay people want to get married, and why the vast majority of straights will marry at some point in their lives.
- I''m normally the last to cry "frau" but this is pathetic. How did we go from personal freedom to some crazy suburban world where everyone is expected to be married AT ALL, much less by a certain age? The gays are as bad as the straights now, which is an odd way to acheive equality.

[quote]Over 35 and never married, and heterosexual? Highly unusual.
It's not "highly" unusual. I know five straight people who are over 35 and never married. All have "issues," to put it mildly: the two straight women I know over 35, both of whom are good-looking (one's an all-out knockout), both manage to get themselves entangled with guys who either aren't marriage material or guys who basically turn out to be psychos (one of them dated two guys in a row who turned out to be bipolar). Of the three guys (also good-looking), one's a perpetual child, much like David Duchovny on "Californication," one has bizarre self-esteem issues when it comes to women and can't keep a girlfriend for more than a few months before pushing her away, and one's in a weird long-distance LTR with a woman who lives in London. My best friend just got married for the first time at 38, too, after swearing the entire time I've known her (25 years) that she's too independent to ever be tied down that way.
