David Tennant. The man is funny and amazingly tallented. He can pull off drama, comedy and Shakespeare. And on top of that, he''s hot. Yet many people haven''t even heard of him.
AKA as VInce on QAF
David Tennant is a hammy, bug-eyed hack. The U.K. can keep him.
Yes, I''ll go there:\
She''s been great in anything she''s ever done, usually a lot better than the material she''s had to work with. \
And this is from a gay man, not some Gina-obsessed fangirl.
Maria Bamford. Yes, a funny female comedian actually exists.
Gina Gershon could be a solid character actress, but her persona is so well established it can really only be in ball-breaker roles like the CBS attorney in "The Insider" - where she was great. She''s also wonderful in the little-seen French movie "Demonlover" as an online porn peddler. She''s way too edgy and overtly sexual to become a star at her age.
Tennant has to do some American stuff if he wants to be known.
Isn''t Tennant a huge star in the UK, because of "Dr. Who"?
That lady who said, "He has a tiny, tiny penis, but he knows exactly how to use it!"
COMEDY GOLD, I TELLS YA!
Chely Wright. (oh wait, she wants to be, that why she used coming out a self-serving publicity stunt)
Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Though he''s had pretty steady work I would think he''d be a bigger household name and get bigger roles. Love him!
"oh wait, she wants to be, that why she used coming out a self-serving publicity stunt"\
Fuck you. People like you are why gay stars don''t come out.
I still want to know about Craig Kelly
R17, I think you misunderstood what I meant. Coming out is great and honest and I think its wonderful. I''m happy for her that she can be who she is. \
My point is that anyone who isn''t a star and makes a big production of coming out is probably looking for attention. (I''m a New Englander relocated to the south and people here love country music and I''ve never heard of the woman)
Jennifer Grey. I like here and she''s really pretty with her new nose.
David Tennant is a huge star - one of the most recognisable faces in the UK. Just because someone isn''t known to the film going public of the US (however many they are) doesn''t mean they aren''t a star. See Bollywood and their huge audiences for details.
I found his Hamlet bland and unengaging.
R23, Blasphemy! He was amazing.\
Anyway R15, I second Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Good looking and a great actor.
Rebecca Mader (Charlotte on Lost) - she is beautiful and a great actress. She''s like Amy Adams only prettier with a hot accent.
Anyone who saw Gina Gershon in Bye Bye Birdie should know why she''s not a big star.
Kelly Clarkson. And its not a knock on her weight or anything. She has a good voice, but she''s just very average.... no star quality (at least in my opinion)
R29, I think you mean why IS she a star?
Jensen has always been pretty, but he didn''t really develop his acting chops until SN, and by then he was tied up in a 7 year CW series that he apparently is being paid too much to quit.
Tennant is one of the biggest stars in the UK (and somehow manages to combine being a massive celebrity with being a highly respected actor, which is pretty rare), so I don''t know if he merits inclusion in this thread. Unless you mean bigger star in America, which is understandable since he''s never worked there other than doing that one pilot.
Sean Patrick Flannery
Yeah, Henry Cavill owns this whole thread.
I always wondered why Saffron Burrows wasn''t bigger.\
and I agree about Sisto but he could still get bigger.
Henry Cavill has absolutely no charisma and is a terribe actor. I doubt he will ever be a huge star, unless he gets lucky like Orlando Bloom and lands a huge movie franchise or something.
He''s in absolutely EVERYTHING lately, yet still he''s not a household name. \
I imagine JGL has the level of fame he wants to have. He seems to want to be a character actor, which is a smart choice. You can work constantly but still have a life. See also: Adam Scott.
Zac Braff. He''s funny and he''s cute in that nerdy way, kinda like John Krasinski.
I disagree that Henry Cavill is a terrible actor. I think he''s very good on "The Tudors," and certainly a lot more subtle and less hammy than JRM.\
And he has landed a big role, with franchise potential. He''s only 27, so he might still blow up.
Susan Lynch ("Nora" and assorted other Irish-y things)
Andre Braugher. Should''ve gotten the kind of film career boost from his brilliant turn on "Homicide" that George Clooney got for lesser work on "ER."
He had a slight moment of momentum a few years back, then nothing. I''m thinking the man has a dart board with Bradley Cooper''s face on it somewhere in his home.
Speaking of ER R44, I never understood why a few of those people never became more famous:\
Often how certain actors act on set hinders their opportunities. Sam Waterson is supposedly quite the snot on set. Anthony Edwards has had as good a career as he could expect after being in many big movies in the 80s. Cavill has had opportunies to read for films like James Bond. I would not count him out yet.
She''s sexy, funny, and super talented. Mines the past but always comes up with something fresh. So - why didn''t she become the new Madonna before Lady GaGa did?
R44 - Another vote for Andre Braugher. He improves anything he''s in. Braugher may lack the typical ''handsome-ness'' required to lead a network series, but HBO needs to write something for him, ASAP.\
Another vote for Jeremy Sisto. He has the Vincent D''Onofrio weirdness that makes him stand out in anything he does. I don''t expect him to be some sort of action hero or series lead - but he''s another one that makes even poor films watchable.
Lisa Lampanelli. She offensive, but unlike say, Sarah Silverman, she is actually funny.
Lisa Lampanelli is very famous in the comedy world. She just doesn''t get magazine covers and stuff like Silverman because she''s not as thin or pretty
"I always wondered why Saffron Burrows wasn''t bigger."\
Because she''s in a relationship with a woman and doesn''t hide it.
Sarah Polley--okay, I know why she is not a star but I wish she was.\
I second Sarah Clarke. I saw her on stage in an adaptation of Nightwood. Her final scene was one of the most shocking, wrenching, violent things I have ever seen onstage. And she was alone sitting in a chair.
Josh Lucas isn''t the only one with a dart board with Bradley Cooper''s face on it.
John Barrowman (in the US. Yes, I know he''s big in the UK)
Are you kidding? David Tennant played the eponymous role in Doctor Who for three series . That''s one of the most, if not the most, iconic characters on British television.
I think OP was being very American-centric when he said David Tennant.
Polley does not like to do publicity. She pissed off execs with how she handled publicity when she was in Go.
Sorry R51 but Silverman isn''t that pretty. And you don''t have to be attrative to have your own show (ie Roseanne)
Andie MacDowell. \
Since I first saw her I thought she''d be a big star and I''m surprised she isn''t.\
Her IMDB page shows a lot of recent and ongoing work, but not in most anything I''ve seen or heard of.
Saffron Burrows tested so poorly with audiences of that shark movie that they killed her off earlier than planned.\
Craig Kelly did the UK version of Dancing With The Stars recently. He also did a TV movie with his brother, Dean Lennox Kelly (of Shameless fame), around the same time. I missed it, though.\
I was very disappointed by his turn as Lesley Sharp''s father (in flashback) in Afterlife.
Did you first see her in Greystoke/Tarzan? McDowell''s most consistently high-profile work since has been dubbing Glenn Close in all her screen roles.
[quote]Saffron Burrows tested so poorly with audiences of that shark movie that they killed her off earlier than planned\
What are you talking about, R62? Saffron Burrow''s character in the shark movie was killed at the end.
"Henry Cavill has absolutely no charisma and is a terribe actor. I doubt he will ever be a huge star, unless he gets lucky like Orlando Bloom and lands a huge movie franchise or something."\
He has a great ass though.
" Sam Waterson is supposedly quite the snot on set."\
Really? I''ve heard he''s a bit ''new-agey'', but that he is one of the nicest actors in NYC.
Forget his portrayals of Tony Blair. Watch him is MUSIC WITHIN as a guy struggling with MS and a guy with major OCD in DIRTY FILTHY LOVE. Amazing actor.
Sorry, I meant "Sheen"
Zach Braff? Who starred in a sitcom for many years?\
How much more famous do you people think someone should get? I think he''s starting to direct, but I don''t know. Maybe he''s taking time off. He''s got buckets of money by now, I''m sure.\
Seems like some people don''t understand the thread topic. Sisto and Saffron Burrows are on L&O shows. That''s pretty damn big in TV.\
Andie McDowell is the stunner. She''s old now, and the reason she never got "bigger" (she did star in several movies she shouldn''t have gotten) is because she sucked the life out of everything she did. She is the original model-turned-actress who shouldn''t have.
Andi MacDowell is still doing L''Oreal ads. TV and print. I wouldn''t pity her.
Rufus Sewell - he is a fantastic actor and gorgeous so why hasn''t he gotten any decent roles?\
Saffron Burrows, has a beautful face, but she is too tall at six foot and dwarfs most hollywood male stars. Also an out les, as we all know what that does for the career of an actor/actress.
Yup Andie is on TV in those L''Oreal ads all the time. In Europe every other commercial break is her or Jane Fonda peddling anti-wrinkle cream.\
She wasn''t a bigger star because she isn''t all that likeable.
James Purefoy. \
Yeah, that NBC show he did bombed and he kinda disappeared, yet I always thought that after ''Rome'', he''d be a bigger star.
[quote]Also an out les\
She''s a bi-girl not a lez.
Bo Bice. I always thought he was one of the most tallented people to come out of Idol. He had one song they played for a while and then he faded away.
Is Bice and Italian name? Bee-chey?
R70 Zack Braff is directing. He did a brilliant film a few years back called Garden State. \
Yes, he is known, but not WELL known. I thought the idea of this thread was to list people who may be known (to some) but aren''t very big stars.
[quote][R70] Zack Braff is directing. He did a brilliant film a few years back called Garden State. \
It was horrible.
Jennifer Ehle owns this thread.\
One gorgeous woman. One amazing actress. Two tony awards. Hardly ever seen on screen.
Jennifer Ehle is fantastic. She should have a career similar to those of Kate Winslet and Cate Blanchett
Akiko Koyama, she was brilliant in Realm Of The Senes, then poof.
Most of the losers listed SUCK!
I never understood why Angela Bassett and Lynn Whitfield did not become bigger stars. They are fabulous. \
Oh and Henry Simmons, I don''t care about his acting ability but physically he is my ideal man.
R4, Gina Gershon isn''t a bigger star because she is batshit crazy, and the list of people who are willing to work with her is getting shorter by the day.
Jayma Mays. \
I LOVE her. I will see anything she''s in . . . including, yes, Paul Blart Mall Cop.
I don''t find Lisa Lampanelli funny in the least.%0D\
I don''t understand why Laurie Metcalf isn''t bigger. She''s a great comedic actress. She was great in Desperate Housewives too. She really should be getting more work.
"I never understood why Angela Bassett and Lynn Whitfield did not become bigger stars. They are fabulous."%0D\
This one is easy to explain...there are very few good roles for black women in Hollywood. %0D\
Lynn Whitfield is also ''difficult''.. very borderline. Vanous is not pleasant either. Pearce had an eating disorder of some kind that derailed his career. He was skeletal at one point. He could have had Hugh Jackman''s career.
