Well, yes, personally i find your observation about the similarities among Farley and Clift to be very fitting. He would make an excellent 'Morris' in 'The Heiress' and i can imagine him with pleasure to play with Taylor in 'A Place in the Sun'.
I have no idea why Farley's career didn't lead him to be considered today as one of the best actors of his time. He surely had that potential.
I haven't read his autobiography yet, but i'll buy a kindle for Christmas and it will be more easy to find and read stuff this way. I will certainly inform you when i read something that has to do with your question. It's a very interesting one actually, and i hope there is someone from DL that has already read this book to answer immediately!
