Let''s pretend we are Bernadette Peters!

Ooooh, my voice is so high-pitched!

by Anonymousreply 126March 3, 2018 7:18 PM

I know her. I don't think we should be making fun of her. She's sweet.

by Anonymousreply 1April 7, 2010 4:05 AM

NO.

by Anonymousreply 2April 7, 2010 4:05 AM

Who am I? I don't know who I am?

by Anonymousreply 3April 7, 2010 4:06 AM

But not high-pitched enough to have a legit soprano!

by Anonymousreply 4April 7, 2010 4:07 AM

Perhaps you would like to hear some of my Tony-losing performance in Gypsy?

by Anonymousreply 5April 7, 2010 4:07 AM

Shut the fuck up, Barb aka R5. I'd wish for a house to fall on you, but that would only do damage to the house.

by Anonymousreply 6April 7, 2010 4:14 AM

Well, R5, I saw Hairspray and Gypsy the same weekend about 6 months after the Tony Awards and have to say Bernadette was hitiing it out of the park in every way. A great performance. On the other had, Marissa Jaret was a mess. Sharp when she wasn't flat, ahead of the beat, missing jokes, laughing at herself- and I couldn't believe she won a Tony for the performance. A real mess.

by Anonymousreply 7April 7, 2010 4:16 AM

gee, where can I present my hole?

by Anonymousreply 8April 7, 2010 6:54 AM

Is she still a Scientologist?

by Anonymousreply 9April 7, 2010 6:58 AM

So much plastic surgery. Sooooo muuuuuuch.

by Anonymousreply 10April 7, 2010 7:03 AM

No r9 she looked into when it first started and left, good for her.

Glad to hear r1 that she's nice.

by Anonymousreply 11April 7, 2010 3:09 PM

I am sooooooooooooooooooooo sexy!

by Anonymousreply 12April 7, 2010 3:17 PM

My first exposure to musical theater was watching a taped performance of Sunday In The Park With George with her and Mandy Patinkin on PBS. Holy shit, it was the best thing I'd ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 13April 7, 2010 3:29 PM

If I were Bernie, I'd ask myself how long it will take me to decide to get my hair straightened.

by Anonymousreply 14April 7, 2010 3:29 PM

BP is beyond reproach. Stuff it, OP.

by Anonymousreply 15April 7, 2010 3:35 PM

I have never had cosmetic surgery and never will. I simply am naturally and eternally youthful. Just wait until you see me curls cascading about my pretty face and my cupid-kissed lips when I'm 75!

by Anonymousreply 16April 7, 2010 3:37 PM

Honey, you ARE 75.

by Anonymousreply 17April 7, 2010 3:39 PM

I apologise for my performance in Impromptu.

by Anonymousreply 18April 7, 2010 3:40 PM

Somehow I thought I was going to have more of a movie career.

by Anonymousreply 19April 7, 2010 3:45 PM

She's a sweetheart. Fuck off, OP.

by Anonymousreply 20April 7, 2010 3:45 PM

I used to let Steve Martin fuck my titties, but only as a special treat.

How he loved that. Sigh.

by Anonymousreply 21April 7, 2010 3:46 PM

Everyday I thank both Christ and Shiva that I am still one low cut diva!

by Anonymousreply 22April 7, 2010 3:46 PM

Vargas came out of retirement to paint my portrait, bite my ass you little fucktards.

by Anonymousreply 23April 7, 2010 3:47 PM

Did you notice that when I was on Gray's Anatomy, I wore an evening gown that looked just like one of my costumes from Into the Woods?

by Anonymousreply 24April 7, 2010 3:57 PM

Did you see me on 'all in the family' with my original nose? I was never closer to my role in 'into the woods'?

Seriously Bernadette is wonderful. I don't mind making fun of her because it's what we do. However she has done lots and lots of gratis and low cost work for AMFAR, animal advocacy groups and she is a consummate professional. She did a meet and greet for a local HIV charity and she stayed well beyond the contractually agreed upon time PLUS she donated proceeds from her CD sales to the agency.

I'll enjoy the snarky comments and she did look frightful on 'all in the family' but when it's all done, she's a wonderful person and a true friend to the gay community (who has a teeny tiny mouth and looked bad on AITF).

by Anonymousreply 25April 7, 2010 5:24 PM

Yes, these are real.

And they're SPECTACULAR.

by Anonymousreply 26April 7, 2010 5:38 PM

I was in horror when I spied a grey hair on my pussy at the tender age of 31. I cried my doe-y eyes out all afternoon until I realized it was just Steve Martin's.

by Anonymousreply 27April 7, 2010 5:52 PM

The beginning and end of my television career was when I was cast as a rival on "Maude" for Bill Macy's erotic attentions who winds up losing out to Beatrice Arthur.

by Anonymousreply 28April 7, 2010 6:23 PM

What r25 says, ita!

by Anonymousreply 29April 7, 2010 6:32 PM

I feel bad for her leave her alone.

by Anonymousreply 30April 7, 2010 6:37 PM

She deserves an Honorary Oscar for just her hair alone in The Longest Yard!

I used to dislike her until I saw her in concert. Now I appreciate her more. Great job in Pennies From Heaven, too!

by Anonymousreply 31April 7, 2010 6:39 PM

I love her too OP what's the problem?

by Anonymousreply 32April 7, 2010 6:40 PM
I feel bad for her leave her alone.

Why do you feel bad for her? She has a sizable gay cult following, is famous nationwide, and is a millionaire.

Save your pity for the starving in Darfur.

by Anonymousreply 33April 7, 2010 6:44 PM

R33, she lost her (younger) husband in a tragic accident. And she's a hardworker with an impressive resume and a very good rep in the industry.

by Anonymousreply 34April 7, 2010 6:50 PM

Her husband died in a terrible plane crash suddenly.

by Anonymousreply 35April 7, 2010 6:51 PM

R35

So it wasn't one of those horrible, drawn-out plane crashes?

by Anonymousreply 36April 7, 2010 7:06 PM

He died in a helicopter crash, not a plane crash.

And while that's too bad, that does not exempt her from everymore having fun poked at her on Datalounge. (And it's still not like she's a starving person in Darfur.)

by Anonymousreply 37April 7, 2010 7:13 PM

Does Bernie like "Making Love Alone" as much as I do.

by Anonymousreply 38April 8, 2010 12:15 AM

Ah, you mean she lost her beard, so who is her gf?

by Anonymousreply 39April 8, 2010 3:32 AM

Does she have a major deviated septum or something? Why does she always sound as if she has a head cold?

by Anonymousreply 40April 8, 2010 3:40 AM

You guys are heartless fags...

by Anonymousreply 41April 8, 2010 1:31 PM

I'm just a sexy widdle girl wid a code in my nose!

Boo-boo-ba-doo!

by Anonymousreply 42April 8, 2010 5:53 PM

I once read that in the UK you can rip the hell out of anyone - the queen included - but don't you dare say a word in public against Judi Dench.

Judging from this thread, it looks like Bernadette Peters has a similar effect on a lot of DLers.

by Anonymousreply 43April 8, 2010 6:21 PM

You're right, R43.

Where are the fags to save ya now, Barb? Is that the sound of audiences running out of Studio 54 in droves? I haven't been there since it was the REAL Studio 54, not some theater, back when I was doing movies with Steve. Steve as in Martin, my ex-lover, not Sondheim, my best friend. Oh, by the way, don't take it personally that the new song he wrote for that revue of yours has NO lines for you in it, haha! "God" indeed!

THAT's the sweetest sound, peaches, you with your fat yap shut! Kramer croaks better than you!

But I'm sure you'll croak before us all, anyway, old dear. "Live, Laugh, Love"!

by Anonymousreply 44April 8, 2010 8:46 PM

What's the deal with the gay rumors? And her deceased husband? Wasn't he abusive to her or something?

by Anonymousreply 45June 2, 2011 4:49 PM

r1, please tell me she's a lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 46June 2, 2011 4:55 PM

What a witless post, OP. You really think that Ms. Peters sits around at this point in her life thinking stupid things like that?

by Anonymousreply 47June 2, 2011 4:56 PM

I think BC-EFA should host a NIGHT OF A THOUSAND BERNADETTES. Everyone attending has to wear a corkscrew-curly red mop wig.%0D %0D Or they should sell official Bernadette wigs at the BC-EFA flea market.

by Anonymousreply 48June 2, 2011 5:12 PM

She is beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 49June 2, 2011 5:20 PM

I've met her and she is really nice. Not a lesbian.

She's dating a guy around her age. Grey hair.

by Anonymousreply 50June 2, 2011 5:26 PM

Every time I sing a single self-induced tear will slowly travel from eye to chin.

by Anonymousreply 51June 2, 2011 5:29 PM

So where did the gay rumors come from?

by Anonymousreply 52June 2, 2011 5:42 PM

I'm surprised some soap or facial cream company (Dove? Noxema? Camay?) hasn't signed her for TV spots. She really has gorgeous, creamy porcelain skin.%0D %0D "Would you believe I am a full-blooded Sicilian? 'But, Bernadette', you must be thinking - 'You're whiter than a carton of plain yogurt!' My beauty secret is simple - I stay out of the sun --- and I owe my lovely, smooth skin to Camay!"

by Anonymousreply 53June 2, 2011 5:43 PM

Is she really sicilian? On both sides of her family?

by Anonymousreply 54June 2, 2011 6:03 PM

It's time for Bernie to try a luxurious hair straightening treatment. Fiji Island frizz is no longer fashionable.

by Anonymousreply 55June 2, 2011 6:10 PM
I once read that in the UK you can rip the hell out of anyone - the queen included - but don't you dare say a word in public against Judi Dench%0D %0D It used to be Felicity Kendal who was beyond reproach.

SOME PEOPLE%E2%80%A6cough%E2%80%A6cough%E2%80%A6CAN THRIVE AND BLOOM%E2%80%A6 cough Um, can we cancel two or three performances?

by Anonymousreply 57June 2, 2011 7:18 PM

Just watched my copy of the NBC TV one hour version of GEORGE M! with Joel Grey, Blythe Danner and Bernadette Peters as Cohen's sister. Bernadette was lovely. %0D Too bad they cut this down to one hour.

by Anonymousreply 58June 2, 2011 7:23 PM

I love you R57

by Anonymousreply 59June 2, 2011 7:24 PM

I blow up real good around 6:50!

by Anonymousreply 60June 2, 2011 7:28 PM

Sluggo in curls!

by Anonymousreply 61June 2, 2011 7:56 PM

R1, what is she like?

by Anonymousreply 62June 3, 2011 5:54 PM

I'll work with Tom Viola at AMFAR and present concert performances below market rate to support and promote HIV services agencies across the country. I'll stay beyond my contractually agreed upon time for meet and greets and donate the sales of my CDs to the ASOs. I'll be on time and professional for every performance. I'll sell every song and do my best to perform at the best of my potential.

by Anonymousreply 63June 3, 2011 6:02 PM

When I was a kid, I saw her perform some torch song or other on [italic]The Carol Burnett Show,[/italic] and she actually cried during the number. My mom rolled her eyes at Bernie's showboating.

by Anonymousreply 64June 3, 2011 6:13 PM

It's not my fault Slaves on New york sucked. I did my off-beat quirky best to save that piece of crap.

by Anonymousreply 65June 3, 2011 6:31 PM

Ever since I had that "purse string" procedure I has less trouble making and on key queef.

by Anonymousreply 66June 3, 2011 6:37 PM

R63, anybody who puts themselves forth on stage is asking to be parodied regardless of their good deeds. %0D

by Anonymousreply 67June 3, 2011 6:57 PM

Bernie's mom was a creepy stage mother from hell.

by Anonymousreply 68June 3, 2011 7:16 PM

R68, I got that impression after watching the video linked below. Bernadette looks like it's speaking way too close to home. %0D %0D I remember their being a thread on datalounge, YEARS ago, called "Bernadette Peter's Borderline Abusing Husband" or something. Obviously before he died. I don't remember any of the specifics-does anyone remember? %0D %0D I have always heard the gay rumors, and believed it--until her husband died. Ever since then, she seems somehow different. I don't know her personally or anything, but I have met her several times and have seen her perform MANY times. There just seems to be a sadness in her eyes. I like her a lot.

I don't get the gay rumors about Bernadette. If she were gay, why would she bother getting married to a man when in her late 40s? Besides she mostly works in the theater, so it's not like she'd be losing out on major movie roles by being an out lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 70June 4, 2011 8:16 AM

Lovely person. Horrid in Gypsy. We were embarrassed for her and by the looks of others in the audience, we weren't alone.

by Anonymousreply 71June 4, 2011 10:09 AM

We used to be neighbors. She was always lovely, always had a friendly, cheerful greeting and nice things to say.

by Anonymousreply 72June 4, 2011 10:16 AM

I wish she would come out of the closet. Bernie tried to pick-up a female (straight) friend of mine back in the late 80's while filming "The Slaves of New York". My friend politely turned her down and was rather shocked and surprised when Bernie later married a man.

by Anonymousreply 73June 4, 2011 10:41 AM

I found her disappointing in Gypsy but, having never seen Lansbury in the role, Bernadette was the only one who made the "I could have been bigger than any of you" line convincing. I could imagine her Madame Rose as a stripper in her younger days. On the other hand, who on earth would have wanted to see Ethel Merman, Tyne Daly or Patti LuPone take their clothes off?

by Anonymousreply 74June 4, 2011 11:21 AM

When I was in college the drama dept always sponsored a one week trip to NYC over spring break. After a show, a bunch of us were at Joe Allen. Bernadette Peters came over to our table, talked to each of us and even sat with us for a few minutes. I have always thought that was so nice of her. She didn't have to do it. No one from our table went over to hers begging for an autograph. But she spotted a group of silly college theah-A-TAH kids and made a very nice gesture by coming over to our table.

by Anonymousreply 75June 4, 2011 12:29 PM

Bernadette as Mama Rose was about as convincing as Sarah Palin in the role of rocket scientist.

by Anonymousreply 76June 4, 2011 12:59 PM

Why hasn't Dames at Sea had a marvelous revival? Is it reviveable?

by Anonymousreply 77June 4, 2011 2:20 PM

r69, it is possible that she was close to him, just not physically. Does that really need to be pointed out?

by Anonymousreply 78June 4, 2011 4:22 PM

Was her acting as bad in Gypsy?

by Anonymousreply 79June 4, 2011 9:51 PM

Loved her in Sunday In The Park

by Anonymousreply 80June 4, 2011 10:01 PM

Please can I be her split ends?!

by Anonymousreply 81June 4, 2011 10:03 PM

she was terific in Into The Woods, much better then Vanessa Williams

by Anonymousreply 82June 4, 2011 10:06 PM

She's very schticky. That, or blubbery.

by Anonymousreply 83June 4, 2011 10:11 PM

Please give me credit.

I quelled a strong urge to be violently ill when Mandy Patinkin gurgled, "I love you!" after our song for Steve's birthday.

Oh, and I'm almost certain the other gals misconstrued my squint and half-smile as some sort of approval of how they mangled their songs.

by Anonymousreply 84June 4, 2011 10:25 PM

BP's recording of "Gee Whiz," as a 45 single, was in rotation in the jukebox in my parents' basement in like 1980...needless to say, I played it to death.

I know I bought and loaded the record into the player, but I am trying to remember how I would have even known who she was then. I was like 15.

Was it the Steve Martin connection? He was the first big "concert" I ever went to, around the same time. Arrow through my head and all. Ninth grade.

Is she still with her assistant? There was a BI a while back that said they had broken up but I saw something recently that made it appear they weren't.

by Anonymousreply 86June 5, 2011 4:35 AM

Well, she's still working with her, that's for sure.

To anyone who knows her personally: is she ok? The last few times I've met her she has seemed a bit spacey...

More details about her mother, please. And is the only basis for the gay rumor that she has a gay assistant? Don't get me wrong, I WANT her on the team!! Just seems too good to be true, lol!

by Anonymousreply 87June 5, 2011 7:09 AM

And r86...what did you see?

by Anonymousreply 88June 5, 2011 7:10 AM

I thought she was brilliant in GYPSY, but I saw it toward the end of the run. Don't know if that was different than earlier in the run. And the audience that night certainly agreed.

She was on a level with Daly and Lansbury, whom I also saw. Way better than LuPone, who was a wretched, hammy parody in the part.

by Anonymousreply 89June 5, 2011 7:36 AM

She was sweet as Eleanore in "Slaves of New York". She brought warmth to the movie.

I liked her funny cameo in Woody Allens "Alice" too.

by Anonymousreply 90June 5, 2011 7:56 AM

R89, saw it in the middle of the run. The audience was visibly uncomfortable for her she was so bad. Now, in fairness, she was having vocal problems. I kid you not. As the lights came up for intermission, people were staring at each other in bewilderment. But not for a minute did she come across as remotely believable in the role.

Sorry, LuPone was brilliant in the role, gave Rose the relentless tenacity integral to the character.

by Anonymousreply 91June 5, 2011 11:15 AM

I saw Peters and LuPone. I found Peters to be a disappointment but LuPone was even worse. She went for the cliched portrayal of Rose as a bulldozing monster which kind of makes you ask why Herbie would put up with a bitch like her for so long and why Louise would try so hard to please her. Watching Patti L in the role made me terribly uncomfortable and I was left wondering how close her monstrous broad take on the role was to her own personality.

by Anonymousreply 92June 5, 2011 11:37 AM

Steve,

Please give me some special material for my new act?

Sondheim: how bout "65 and They Just Won't Drop"

by Anonymousreply 93June 5, 2011 12:22 PM

Actually, I loved Bernadette in Gypsy; I appreciated the different spin on the role. She truly made it hers and brought new life to Rose.

by Anonymousreply 94June 6, 2011 12:42 AM

Slightly padded?

Any thoughts on Follies?

by Anonymousreply 99June 22, 2011 12:26 AM

OK, OP.

I'm pretending I'm BP.

And my voice isn't at all high pitched. Are you tone deaf?

by Anonymousreply 100June 22, 2011 1:03 AM

I've never seen a really enthralling Mama Rose. Betty Buckley came the closest to a great performance because her Rose's Turn was a knockout. Lupone was certainly good. Daly, a lovely lady and a good actress was satisfactory but overly hyped in the part.

I missed Peters, the snippets I saw on tv didn't inspire me to buy a ticket. I wish I would have seen Lansbury. I was alive but barely during the original run.

by Anonymousreply 101June 22, 2011 1:06 AM

I went to see Follies, the set was grand, the staging wonderful, some of the cast looked a bit Stoned during the production (Ie. Missing your mark, walking face forward into chairs, pillars, and people). It wasnt bad but needs some polishing before hitting the Great White Way, although I did expect more, being that it was the Kennedy Center and Mind you it was 4 performances before the final show. Bernadette was amazing. For the Roll of Sally I was scared she would be over glamorous to be the homely Sally from Arizona. In the red dress she still looked Glamorous but her vocals were nearly flawless, Losing my mind left the audience reeling, Bernadette was giving a Tony Award Winning performance.

by Anonymousreply 102June 22, 2011 1:28 AM

R102, they were supposed to miss their marks in these songs they haven't performed in years. And Elaine Paige dancing into the column is a choreographed bit that happened at every performance. I agree with you though that Peters was terrific in this role.

by Anonymousreply 103June 22, 2011 1:36 AM

That makes sense now about Elaine, although I did see some mishaps during "Loveland". I will admit Im a fan of the music from follies and have seen bits and pieces of the show on dvd's this was my first full follies experience.

by Anonymousreply 105November 13, 2011 7:41 AM

I still own the best version of 'Not A Day Goes By' Rosie Clooney said of me, I'm the only singer who can tear up, and not have it affect my vocals. Everyone elses cords seize up -you cant cry, and sing at the same time...........except ME

by Anonymousreply 106November 13, 2011 8:03 AM

Isn't it a shame that your "no gag reflex" talent is going to waste since you're a lezzie, Bernie?

by Anonymousreply 107November 13, 2011 8:16 AM
who on earth would have wanted to see Ethel Merman, Tyne Daly or Patti LuPone take their clothes off?

Me! Me! I would have KILLED to see Ethel with her clothes off!

by Anonymousreply 108November 13, 2011 8:17 AM

I heard Merman called one of her titties Ernest and the other tittie Borgnine.

by Anonymousreply 109November 13, 2011 9:27 AM

Is Bernadette gay?

by Anonymousreply 110November 13, 2011 1:57 PM

Love her work and love her.

Watching her tap in Who's That Woman made me wish someone would write a GOOD Baby Jane musical so Bernadette could play the part- with tap flashbacks!! You just know she can still do it.

by Anonymousreply 111November 13, 2011 8:42 PM

If they did the WEHT Baby Jane musical Peters would be perfect for it. Maybe have Bernadette opposite Bebe Neuwirth or Patti Lupone that would be interesting to say the least.

I'm not aging!

by Anonymousreply 123March 3, 2018 5:15 PM

I like Bernadette, but the clip at R97 is pretty funny.

I going to say something blasphemous here, but I think Gypsy is overrated. It is a good show, but I don't find it the ultimate masterpiece that it is often heralded as. Similar thoughts about Rose's Turn.

by Anonymousreply 124March 3, 2018 5:43 PM

I’m the only person on DL who can say, “I’m 75, but people always tell me I look 35” and really mean it.

by Anonymousreply 125March 3, 2018 6:45 PM

I saw her early in the GYPSY run and she was genuinely awful. It wasn't just the vocals. She was just screaming every line in, I guess, some pathetic attempt to channel Merman or come across as bigger than she was. It wasn't very effective. It brought to mind Linda Levin in the role, which is never a good thing.

I saw her later in the run and she'd done a total 180. I couldn't believe it. She was brilliant. Check out this clip (which is obviously from later in the run). A those laughs she managed to get in this clip were nowhere to be found when I first saw her in the role. It was much like the rest of the evening - uncomfortably silent.

I don't think Rose's Turn is about "hey, I could have been a sexier stripper than you kids!" To me, it's always been a sort of mock of a striptease as if Rose is saying "I could have been a huge star due to talent and not just sex." I've always felt like Rose's Turn works better when you get the feeling that maybe Rose really was born too soon and started too late. She could have been a huge Vaudeville star, but Vaudeville's dead. This is why I always thought Liza Minnelli would have been a brilliant Rose. Her skill set has always seemed like that of someone born 20-30 years prior. By the time she came around, that style was dying. She could have probably related to being extraordinarily talented, but not deemed as relevant enough.
