Shut the fuck up, Barb aka R5. I'd wish for a house to fall on you, but that would only do damage to the house.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 7, 2010 4:14 AM |
Well, R5, I saw Hairspray and Gypsy the same weekend about 6 months after the Tony Awards and have to say Bernadette was hitiing it out of the park in every way. A great performance. On the other had, Marissa Jaret was a mess. Sharp when she wasn't flat, ahead of the beat, missing jokes, laughing at herself- and I couldn't believe she won a Tony for the performance. A real mess.

Seriously Bernadette is wonderful. I don't mind making fun of her because it's what we do. However she has done lots and lots of gratis and low cost work for AMFAR, animal advocacy groups and she is a consummate professional. She did a meet and greet for a local HIV charity and she stayed well beyond the contractually agreed upon time PLUS she donated proceeds from her CD sales to the agency.
I'll enjoy the snarky comments and she did look frightful on 'all in the family' but when it's all done, she's a wonderful person and a true friend to the gay community (who has a teeny tiny mouth and looked bad on AITF).

I don't get the gay rumors about Bernadette. If she were gay, why would she bother getting married to a man when in her late 40s? Besides she mostly works in the theater, so it's not like she'd be losing out on major movie roles by being an out lesbian.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | June 4, 2011 8:16 AM |

We used to be neighbors. She was always lovely, always had a friendly, cheerful greeting and nice things to say.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | June 4, 2011 10:16 AM |
I wish she would come out of the closet. Bernie tried to pick-up a female (straight) friend of mine back in the late 80's while filming "The Slaves of New York". My friend politely turned her down and was rather shocked and surprised when Bernie later married a man.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | June 4, 2011 10:41 AM |
I found her disappointing in Gypsy but, having never seen Lansbury in the role, Bernadette was the only one who made the "I could have been bigger than any of you" line convincing. I could imagine her Madame Rose as a stripper in her younger days. On the other hand, who on earth would have wanted to see Ethel Merman, Tyne Daly or Patti LuPone take their clothes off?
by Anonymous | reply 74 | June 4, 2011 11:21 AM |
When I was in college the drama dept always sponsored a one week trip to NYC over spring break. After a show, a bunch of us were at Joe Allen. Bernadette Peters came over to our table, talked to each of us and even sat with us for a few minutes. I have always thought that was so nice of her. She didn't have to do it. No one from our table went over to hers begging for an autograph. But she spotted a group of silly college theah-A-TAH kids and made a very nice gesture by coming over to our table.

I quelled a strong urge to be violently ill when Mandy Patinkin gurgled, "I love you!" after our song for Steve's birthday.

BP's recording of "Gee Whiz," as a 45 single, was in rotation in the jukebox in my parents' basement in like 1980...needless to say, I played it to death.
I know I bought and loaded the record into the player, but I am trying to remember how I would have even known who she was then. I was like 15.
Was it the Steve Martin connection? He was the first big "concert" I ever went to, around the same time. Arrow through my head and all. Ninth grade.

by Anonymous | reply 88 | June 5, 2011 7:10 AM |
I thought she was brilliant in GYPSY, but I saw it toward the end of the run. Don't know if that was different than earlier in the run. And the audience that night certainly agreed.
She was on a level with Daly and Lansbury, whom I also saw. Way better than LuPone, who was a wretched, hammy parody in the part.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | June 5, 2011 7:36 AM |
She was sweet as Eleanore in "Slaves of New York". She brought warmth to the movie.
I liked her funny cameo in Woody Allens "Alice" too.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | June 5, 2011 7:56 AM |
R89, saw it in the middle of the run. The audience was visibly uncomfortable for her she was so bad. Now, in fairness, she was having vocal problems. I kid you not. As the lights came up for intermission, people were staring at each other in bewilderment. But not for a minute did she come across as remotely believable in the role.
Sorry, LuPone was brilliant in the role, gave Rose the relentless tenacity integral to the character.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | June 5, 2011 11:15 AM |
I saw Peters and LuPone. I found Peters to be a disappointment but LuPone was even worse. She went for the cliched portrayal of Rose as a bulldozing monster which kind of makes you ask why Herbie would put up with a bitch like her for so long and why Louise would try so hard to please her. Watching Patti L in the role made me terribly uncomfortable and I was left wondering how close her monstrous broad take on the role was to her own personality.

I've never seen a really enthralling Mama Rose. Betty Buckley came the closest to a great performance because her Rose's Turn was a knockout. Lupone was certainly good. Daly, a lovely lady and a good actress was satisfactory but overly hyped in the part.
I missed Peters, the snippets I saw on tv didn't inspire me to buy a ticket. I wish I would have seen Lansbury. I was alive but barely during the original run.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | June 22, 2011 1:06 AM |
I went to see Follies, the set was grand, the staging wonderful, some of the cast looked a bit Stoned during the production (Ie. Missing your mark, walking face forward into chairs, pillars, and people). It wasnt bad but needs some polishing before hitting the Great White Way, although I did expect more, being that it was the Kennedy Center and Mind you it was 4 performances before the final show. Bernadette was amazing. For the Roll of Sally I was scared she would be over glamorous to be the homely Sally from Arizona. In the red dress she still looked Glamorous but her vocals were nearly flawless, Losing my mind left the audience reeling, Bernadette was giving a Tony Award Winning performance.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | June 22, 2011 1:28 AM |
R102, they were supposed to miss their marks in these songs they haven't performed in years. And Elaine Paige dancing into the column is a choreographed bit that happened at every performance. I agree with you though that Peters was terrific in this role.

I saw her early in the GYPSY run and she was genuinely awful. It wasn't just the vocals. She was just screaming every line in, I guess, some pathetic attempt to channel Merman or come across as bigger than she was. It wasn't very effective. It brought to mind Linda Levin in the role, which is never a good thing.
I saw her later in the run and she'd done a total 180. I couldn't believe it. She was brilliant. Check out this clip (which is obviously from later in the run). A those laughs she managed to get in this clip were nowhere to be found when I first saw her in the role. It was much like the rest of the evening - uncomfortably silent.
I don't think Rose's Turn is about "hey, I could have been a sexier stripper than you kids!" To me, it's always been a sort of mock of a striptease as if Rose is saying "I could have been a huge star due to talent and not just sex." I've always felt like Rose's Turn works better when you get the feeling that maybe Rose really was born too soon and started too late. She could have been a huge Vaudeville star, but Vaudeville's dead. This is why I always thought Liza Minnelli would have been a brilliant Rose. Her skill set has always seemed like that of someone born 20-30 years prior. By the time she came around, that style was dying. She could have probably related to being extraordinarily talented, but not deemed as relevant enough.
