What's Spokane, WA like?

Have a friend who is considering a job there.

Weather? People? Any info and experience would be great.

Thanks!

It's like a roller coaster, cherry pie, and anal sex all rolled into one.

Bump for primetime

by Anonymousreply 2May 21, 2015 1:09 AM

It's the Paris of Eastern Washington state!

by Anonymousreply 3May 21, 2015 1:11 AM

Nicknamed Spokompton.

by Anonymousreply 4May 21, 2015 1:16 AM

It's filled with mostly white methheads who are criminals. Also has quite a number of samoans who are criminal as well. Super republican too.

by Anonymousreply 5May 21, 2015 1:17 AM

I think it's pretty conservative. Not that far from Idaho.

by Anonymousreply 6May 21, 2015 1:18 AM

R5 - ugh, I was afraid of that. I was hoping to hear ANY good news, but it sounds like a frightful place to live and work.

Any other stories? Any glimmer of hope?

Just to qualify - the person would probably only live there for 3 or 4 years and then go somewhere else.

by Anonymousreply 7May 21, 2015 1:20 AM

Yes, R7. My late stepmother grew up on a farm there. I saw photos of Spokane on someone's social account recently. It's gorgeous in the summer - lots of hills and vegetation. You could grow your own food and gardens there easily.

If you have a well paying job, make friends with others who are there because of well paying jobs. You'll be fine. Don't pass up a good job because of methheads. Those are everywhere.

Isn't Gonzaga U. in Spokane? I met a G. professor who commuted to Seattle and had a home on Lake Washington. Spokane isn't a terrible place. You can meet non-druggies there. It would be an easy place to save up money. HTH

by Anonymousreply 8May 21, 2015 1:30 AM

No r7, it would not be frightful if you have a well paying job. People make fun of the place, but it won't be hellish with a good job especially since the COL is lower than any big city. you won't have a hole in your pocket while saving up and it will all be worth it if you're smart.

We're not talking about abandoned areas of Detroit here.

by Anonymousreply 9May 21, 2015 1:32 AM

Thanks R8 and R9 - it would be a very well paid position - a few hundred grand per year I would imagine. There are a ton of daily flights to Seattle, so that's always an easy get away.

This article from 2013 is hopeful

Yes, Gonzaga is in Spokane, but there's no way you could commute from Seattle to Spokane unless you had a private jet. It's at least a four-hour drive, one way.

Isn't Walla-Walla near Spokane? That's supposed to be lovely, although it's as rife with white supremacists as Spokane is.

by Anonymousreply 13May 21, 2015 2:31 AM

Spokane's not that bad. Less cosmopolitan than I'd like but there are some beautiful parts of town, like the neighborhood around Manito Park. Cost of living is reasonable. It snows a lot in the winter and it's hot in the summer. My mom says it reminds her of the Midwest - coming from my mom, that's a compliment.

A friend bought a dilapidated old Craftsman style house in a pretty but kind of run-down neighborhood, put a lot of sweat equity into it and was going to sell and move on. But during the lengthy restoration process, other people in the neighborhood started remodeling and cleaning up too, and my friend decided to stay. He's happy there.

My cousins grew up in Coeur d'Alene, and Spokane was the "big city". It's a nice city, lots of outdoor activities (skiing, golf, big lake). One lives in Post Falls now, the other two closer to Spokane but outside the city. They all have huge homes and love it there.

by Anonymousreply 15May 21, 2015 3:49 AM

In Spokane all seems to breathe freedom and peace and to make one forget the world and its sad turmoils.

by Anonymousreply 16May 21, 2015 3:54 AM

Isn't that the place that has animal brothels where that Boeing worker got assfucked by a horse and died from a perforated colon?

by Anonymousreply 17May 21, 2015 5:32 AM

Right..."friend",

by Anonymousreply 18May 21, 2015 5:34 AM

It's got Dirty Dicks, so tell your bud to be careful.

by Anonymousreply 19May 21, 2015 7:20 AM

Is it like Rokane Virginia?

by Anonymousreply 20March 10, 2016 1:39 AM

It's like Tacoma, but not on the water.

by Anonymousreply 21March 10, 2016 1:57 AM

Anything to add since 2016? Should a gay move to Spokane?

by Anonymousreply 22February 28, 2019 12:56 AM

It's 40 miles from Coeur d'Alene, ID, which is nice (an easy commute). Spokane is a little run down, but not terrible. It's quite livable and surrounded by a beautiful wooded landscape.

Oh my glob! What about the bedrooms of the tops?

by Anonymousreply 25February 28, 2019 1:09 AM

It is very very very very white. Having said that, I lived there for a couple of years and generally liked it. Pretty decent arts community, a great city if you like outdoorsy stuff, some great restaurants, all the IPA you could want, and it's not that far from Portland and Seattle. There were like... 2 gay bars when I lived there. It is a bit on the conservative side and a Russian Orthodox community that is intensely homophobic but it's pretty easy to avoid all of that bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 26February 28, 2019 1:10 AM

It's close to Seattle

by Anonymousreply 27February 28, 2019 1:10 AM

It's 300 miles from Seattle. How the fuck is that close?

by Anonymousreply 28February 28, 2019 1:14 AM

r27 Four hours is not close. Would you say Boston is close to Philadelphia?

by Anonymousreply 29February 28, 2019 1:15 AM

Is it close to One-Eyed Jack's?

Isn't it full of white supremacists?

by Anonymousreply 32February 28, 2019 1:24 AM

We used to call it Spo-compton years ago because of the crime. Might be better now, haven't been there in a long time.

by Anonymousreply 33February 28, 2019 1:28 AM

Patty Duke lived in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and they would go to Spokane and enjoyed it very much 😀

by Anonymousreply 34February 28, 2019 1:35 AM

Patty Duke was nuts.

Did they have a big scandal with their gay mayor a while back?

by Anonymousreply 37February 28, 2019 2:11 AM

Rachel Dolezal is from Spokane, so. Proceed with caution.

by Anonymousreply 38February 28, 2019 2:14 AM

R35 it was not a nut house LOL
