The James Corden Mystery Continues

[quote]Corden's Late Late Show debut, says Alessandra Stanley, "only deepened one of the more enduring mysteries of late-night television. There is no good explanation for why top executives at the major networks would bet on a little-known British performer who resembles every other white male talk show host already on the air rather than take a chance on a more familiar, more charismatic star who, by just being female or non-Caucasian, breaks the mold."

He's got a year of sucky ratings and then he'll be sent back to that wretched island.

by Anonymousreply 2May 20, 2015 11:35 AM

His show's a mess, and someone needs to slip him a couple Valium every night before showtime to slow him the fuck down and stop the twitching and nervous laughter, but I keep thinking back to how horrible Conan was his first few weeks, and maybe the kid has a chance to pull it off.

Long term I think the big problem is that his show and his personality aren't going to be a good match for Colbert's.

by Anonymousreply 3May 20, 2015 11:47 AM

Maybe women need to get a fucking clue that not EVERYTHING is handed to them because they have vaginas and martyr complexes.

The network did not want a female or a bkack. Get over it, move on.

by Anonymousreply 4May 20, 2015 11:50 AM

How many whites host BET shows?

BET should reflect America's racial makeup.

by Anonymousreply 5May 20, 2015 11:53 AM

Considering that every single late night talk show is hosted by a white male, why not a black woman or man? There are a lot of comedians that could do it, American ones, with an understanding of what Americans find funny.

Craig Ferguson is Scottish-American, but understood from the first show what Americans find funny. He was very Americanized from living here for years. Cordon is too "fresh off the boat."

by Anonymousreply 6May 20, 2015 12:19 PM

Magic Johnson, Arsenio Hall, George Lopez, Joan Rivers, Chelsea Handler, et. al. were all given chances at hosting late night talk shows. Hell, even Sammy Davis, Jr. had one.

by Anonymousreply 7May 20, 2015 1:03 PM

I think he's funny. I LOVED THIS!!!

[quote]How many whites host BET shows?

[quote]BET should reflect America's racial makeup.

That's such a false equivalency. It's like saying that poor and rich people should pay the same amount in taxes. The fact is, the entertainment industry is still run by and representative of mainly whites. Whit e males, as that. Just because women and some minorities have established niche channels (usually to counter the white male demographics) doesn't mean they're equal to the mainstream.

by Anonymousreply 11May 20, 2015 2:03 PM

What ever happened to the good old late night movie?

Maybe white males need to get a clue that not EVERYTHING should be handed to them because they have penises and entitlement complexes.

by Anonymousreply 13May 20, 2015 2:12 PM

Wondering if they didn't really care that much about who filled the slot until they see how Colbert will do in Letterman's spot. They don't want someone who might be better and make them look stupid for their choice of Colbert.

by Anonymousreply 14May 20, 2015 2:15 PM

James Corden is really cute sort of a blond bear. Did you see him in "Into The Woods?" I thought he was a great romantic lead. There's nothing wrong with not being a skinny-Minnie.

by Anonymousreply 15May 20, 2015 2:21 PM

first off his guests are so bad... at best B level, but most of the time c and d level so let's start with just that...

i think for some reason tv execs are obsessed with british accents.. like somehow they think and think the american public will think that those with accents are AUTOMATICALLY MORE intelligent, funny, talented or whatever then everyone else?! strange.

by Anonymousreply 16May 20, 2015 2:25 PM

I thought the One Direction dodgeball segment was fun.

by Anonymousreply 17May 20, 2015 2:28 PM

Daytime is dominated by women, and has been for some time. Oprah, Ellen, Rosie, The View, The Talk, and many more dominate the airwaves and nobody talks about the dearth of white men in daytime talk shows.

by Anonymousreply 18May 20, 2015 2:29 PM

R16 the entertainment industry in general thinks that just because they have a success with something, they need to be replicated ad nauseam. Hence, the many sequels and comic book movies and Autotuned artists, etc. Likewise, the influx of British/Aussie actors in Hollywood. Most of them don't go on to achieve much (the top ten movie stars by popularity by Quigley or earnings by Forbes are consistently American, with the odd foreigner here and there) yet Hollywood keeps hiring unknown Brits/Aussies, oftentimes at the expense of American newcomers.

CBS had a hit with Craig Ferguson on THE LATE LATE SHOW (after subpar ratings with previous hosts, Tom Snyder and Craig Kilborn), so when Ferguson announced he would be departing last year, naturally, the network wanted to "recreate the magic" by hiring another Brit, even if he wasn't known or tested for American audiences. At least, Ferguson was familiar to Americans after starring for 8 years on the popular DREW CAREY SHOW. He wasn't an unknown who had to relocate to the country like Jimmy Corden.

by Anonymousreply 19May 20, 2015 2:44 PM

Ferguson did not want to step down.

by Anonymousreply 20May 20, 2015 2:46 PM

R18 Good point.

by Anonymousreply 21May 20, 2015 2:50 PM

He shouts. A lot. During interviews. During the monologue. He tries to emulate Letterman by addressing the audience as "ladies and gentlemen". The segment where he introduces the guests from their dressing rooms is awkward and almost never works. The shared couch for guests doesn't work either. The best part of the show is the opening credits and Reggie and the band. And he references Jimmmy Fallon way too much. He's hard to listen to and look out. I have given up trying. The show is just not for me. Seth is looking real good right now.

by Anonymousreply 22May 20, 2015 3:05 PM

Daytime is dominated by women hosts because that is the demographic that is watching those shows. What is the demo for late night talk/comic shows? Is it mostly male?

by Anonymousreply 23May 20, 2015 3:25 PM

[quote]why not a black woman or man?

Yeah, why not?

by Anonymousreply 24May 20, 2015 3:31 PM

R23 Yep. Older male.

by Anonymousreply 25May 20, 2015 3:31 PM

I think ?uestlove should host his own show. What a bright, appealing, laid back guy.

by Anonymousreply 26May 20, 2015 3:33 PM

[quote]Ferguson did not want to step down.

Yes he did. He got a game show gig that shoots a couple of weeks a year and great money. Much less work. Oh and he just won the Emmy for it too.

by Anonymousreply 27May 20, 2015 3:36 PM

r6 that was funny, it was too good when they got out and laid on Jennifer's star on the Walk of Fame, Don't forget my diet coke!

by Anonymousreply 28May 20, 2015 3:47 PM

Let's never forget DL Uber-Cunt Lee Radziwell's short-lived talk show for CBS, 'Conversations With Uber-Cunt Lee Radziwill'!

by Anonymousreply 29May 20, 2015 4:02 PM

'The segment where he introduces the guests from their dressing rooms is awkward and almost never works. The shared couch for guests doesn't work either. '

Both elements taken from The Jonathon Ross Show in the UK. The guests assemble awkwardly in the dressing room and a giant screen on set links to them at the top of the show after the host's opening gags. They cut back and forth to the dressing room for reaction shots and for the guests to deliver fed gag lines throughout the show.

In any case, the talk show format is the Noah's Ark of TV, there is little scope for any originality, it's a creaking old tub.

by Anonymousreply 30May 20, 2015 4:06 PM

How are his ratings?

by Anonymousreply 31May 20, 2015 4:07 PM

I always thought that J. Ross guest room thing was painful. A very bad idea. Stars should be in their own gigantic dressing room. It looks like they're in an interrogation chamber. LAME!

by Anonymousreply 32May 20, 2015 4:10 PM

I am sensing that Corden is a much bigger hit with women than men. I like him very much and I look forward to the energy boosting opening sequence after my nightly cry at the end of Letterman. I'm really going to need that boost tonight. He needs to be allowed a bit more time to settle n and hit his stride. And his guests are no less top drawer than those who book Seth Meyers and Conan. He has pulled a few A listers thus far, which is something I never see on the other two late shows.

by Anonymousreply 33May 20, 2015 4:45 PM

[quote]There is no good explanation for why top executives at the major networks would bet on a little-known British performer who resembles every other white male talk show host already on the air rather than take a chance on a more familiar, more charismatic star who, by just being female or non-Caucasian, breaks the mold."

Is there a good explanation for why the mold has to be broken?

by Anonymousreply 34May 20, 2015 5:20 PM

Someone needs to start a thread on talk shows no one remembers anymore.

by Anonymousreply 35May 20, 2015 5:27 PM

His show lost in the ratings to Seth Meyers reruns.

by Anonymousreply 36May 20, 2015 6:09 PM

I like James Corden and his show.

Anyway, hating on him for the fact he got that timeslot is stupid. It's not like he made the decision himself. CBS selected him; if you're mad that CBS didn't select a woman or minority instead, they're the ones who deserve your criticism.

by Anonymousreply 37May 20, 2015 6:18 PM

Whoopi also had a failed, vanity late night interview series.

Craig Ferguson isn't Scottish-American, he's a Scottish man who became a citizen of the US.

by Anonymousreply 39May 20, 2015 6:31 PM

[quote]Craig Ferguson isn't Scottish-American, he's a Scottish man who became a citizen of the US.

That's what makes him a Scottish-American. Someone born and raised here is just an American... of Scottish (or whatever) descent.

by Anonymousreply 40May 20, 2015 6:32 PM

R38 it did fail, but I actually liked it. She got in just before Conan and the whole hyperactive, 'creating outrageous moments w/ celebs' hosting trends took over. Her show was quiet, funny, witty, and actually featured in depth interviews about the guests' careers and current projects. There was always mutual admiration in interviews and the conversation had a chance to breathe. Total opposite of The View, she's become a cruel shell of her former level of quality.

All I know is forget about the tiresome British aspect and forget about the fact that he seems cheesy, the guy is just incredibly unattractive.

If they were going to keep importing these people, it should've been Norton who actually is very funny.

So Robert De Niro and Al Pacino aren't Italian-Americans?

by Anonymousreply 46May 20, 2015 7:02 PM

[quote]Whoopi also had a failed, vanity late night interview series.

It was interesting that Whoopi took a talk show hosting gig at the height of her fame/film career. In 1990 she was in the #1 movie of the year (GHOST) and won the Oscar and was singled out as the highlight of that movie. Shortly after she won the Oscar in 1991 she started filming SISTER ACT, which was a huge hit the following summer (1992) and the #8 film of the year. She then signed on to do the sequel for which she became the highest paid female actress in Hollywood. Not to mention that in 1992 (#6) and 1993 (#9) she made Quigley's list of top ten movie stars, the only black actress to have ever done so. (She'd also made the list earlier in 1986 at #8.) In 1992, she was also the only woman on the list.

Meanwhile, she did her talk show for the 1992-1993 season.

by Anonymousreply 47May 20, 2015 7:02 PM

R41 I remember Whoopi was Chevy Chase's first guest the following year (1993) when he ventured into his own late night talk show, and she told a story about how she had a guest on her show the previous year who dropped a really bad SBD and she had to pretend to ignore it and not draw attention to it. When Chase pressed her to name the celebrity, she wouldn't budge.

Incidentally, she also brought him a gift, which ended up being the shoes she wore on the first day of her show. She said that she hoped it would bring him good luck, and he accepted graciously. That should've been a bad omen to Chase, considering her own talk show was canceled after one year, and his didn't even last a month.

by Anonymousreply 48May 20, 2015 7:11 PM

Speaking of Chevy and talk shows, does anyone else remember this bizarre moment? She's a crazy flirt. I wonder how Kurt felt - they probably fucked... I really do miss her in films though. Sigh.

R46 why would you even need the hyphen? People born/raised in this country are simply American. That's their nationality. Many so-called Italian-Americans, Irish-Americans, Scottish-Americans, etc. have never set foot in Italy or Ireland or Scotland and are several generations American. They're also mongrels by now, like De Niro who has Irish, Italian, German, Dutch, French ancestry. In fact, he has Irish from both parents and only half Italian from his dad, which makes him more Irish than Italian descent.

In the US, you can't just look at someone's surname and assume they have just one descent.

by Anonymousreply 50May 20, 2015 7:18 PM

[quote]That would be awesome if one of the networks aired a Late Show every night. An old movie would be SO much better than these tired, boring talk shows.

Yeah, if only there was a channel like Turner Classic Movies, RetroPlex, MoviePlex or Encore or HBO, CinemMax, Showtime, Starz, MGM HD, Universal HD, Sony Movie Channel Flix, Fox Movie Channel, Antenna TV, MeTV where someone could watch a late night movie.

by Anonymousreply 51May 20, 2015 8:59 PM

R51 you can watch late night movies on all those channels. Actually, at all hours of the day.

by Anonymousreply 52May 20, 2015 9:02 PM

R52, are you really that stupid?

by Anonymousreply 53May 20, 2015 9:08 PM

R53 wow, why so harsh? I was merely confirming that you can watch late night movies on all those channels you listed.

by Anonymousreply 54May 20, 2015 9:16 PM

You guys only like men who you want to fuck. Talent and charisma don't count. You dislike women and plain, ordinary men.

by Anonymousreply 55May 20, 2015 9:58 PM

When you're naturalized, you're an American citizen. "America" sans Native, is every naturalized citizen whether by birthright or immigrant. Craig is a Scottish-American. American is his nationality.

R63, good description.

Sometimes a particular performer gets a relentless push from the industry. Corden was seen as a bit limp and was not greatly successful in him home country. Yet, here, in US, he is literally everywhere, to the extent that it is joked about. Why? Who did he blow?

by Anonymousreply 67April 30, 2018 12:05 PM

He wins his time slot, that's nuff said.

by Anonymousreply 68April 30, 2018 12:14 PM
