Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
You know, if some of you mean old ladies who constantly bitch and moan about Tina Fey actually watched the show, you'd like it.
Much more than 30 Rock, Kimmy Schmidt is a pretty traditional sitcom. It's got some great laughs and it's also sweet, in the best possible way.

I just downloaded and watched the whole of season 1 back to back.
Absolutely hilarious and touching! Titus Burgess's character was fantastic. Really looking forward to season 2.

Forgot to say that Jane Krakowski was also amazing in her role.

Absolutely one of the funniest shows I've seen, as of late. I'd assume Dl'ers would love it.

Funniest sitcom in years.
Can't remember when I laughed that hard.
Thank God it's nothing like the cringeworthy sitcoms on broadcast TV today.

You can watch the 1st episode HERE on YouTube (in a wonky picture frame format) if you don't have Netflix.
Hurry before it's pulled down.

"Pretty traditional sitcom" sounds awful. I hope it's not that.

At its core, it is totally a traditional sitcom. Naive young woman moves to big city, encounters wacky natives, learns and grows.

I watched the first ten episodes. I'd say that's giving it plenty of chances.
Bored to tears with the desperation of it. And I'm a Tina Fey fan.

I feel sorry for R21. His idea of female comedy is acting like a baby and screaming a lot, a la Lucy.

I watched 5 episodes just hoping it would get funnier. I think maybe it's more for Americans? I love comedies, but I didn't get it. It was very boring.

Tina Fey owes her success to the millions of ugly girls and fat gays who got tired of looking at model-type people becoming famous (but don't want to deign to see themselves in, say, Melissa McCarthy). They thought- finally, a woman who isn't being praised for her looks, but for her talent.
The only problem is the talent is minuscule.
And Tina, hon, we all know you have a wonky eye. You can stop trying to hide it by looking to the side in every glamour shot you take. Trust me, with your fans, the eye would give you cred.

R26 is just babbling bullshit.

Tina Fey's fame and success is due to a clique mentality.
30 Rock struggled endlessly in the ratings but the network kept it going because this 'aren't we so special' clique. Other promising shows were jettison just after a couple of episodes but not 30 Rock. I watched 30 Rock and it was the most badly edited and forced network sitcom in the history of broadcasting.
There's nothing special about Tina Fey. Nada.

I watched four episodes and I really tried to like it but when just about every single character is a ridiculously overblown cartoon, it just gets exhausting.

R28 - I am curious what were all the other worthy shows that were jettisoned in favor of 30 Rock?
by Anonymous | reply 43 | April 13, 2015 4:39 PM

It has its moments. But there's something "off" about it I can't quite pinpoint.
Maybe the characters aren't nice enough for me to like or grotesque enough for me to revel in them saying the unsayable. Maybe its because the plotting and stories each episode are really erratic and unfulfilling. Maybe it just feels a little too pleased with itself when it's not doing anything new.
I'm a gay woman, so perhaps not my place to judge, but the gay flatmate seems such an outdated cliche and so devoid of rounded personality or light and shade.

I love the gay roommate. He's the breakout star of the show. And Carol Kane is hilarious.

Tina Fey is a good writer. Her Weekend Update stuff was clever and consistently funny. Mean Girls was an entertaining movie due to the script and the actresses who played the Plastics. And of course Lizzy Caplan as the ostracized "weird girl". I wondered then why I could never get into 30 Rock. I couldn't get past the first five minutes of any episode. I think r28 has it right. A clique of smug, mostly marginally talented, and very unattractive actors who play even smugger, untalented and very unattractive characters. Anyone who thinks Tracey Morgan is funny must have a rare, inoperable brain tumor. Even Baldwin managed to bore me. I'll give Kimmy Schmitt a chance though. I'm a sucker for comedy.
