Why Does Broccoli Stink Like Shit When It Steams?

Is there animal manure on broccoli or something? Why does the house have the scent of shit when I steam broccoli. It's offensive. I know it's good for health, but the smell is offensive. What if my neighbors complain?

Anyone a farmer or farm person who can answer why broccoli stinks like shit for me?

Reminds me of cooked cabbage or Brussels sprouts, all unbearably stenchy.

The other day I made a mental note that sometimes my poop smells like broccoli. Not always, but sometimes.

I never thought of it the other way around.

OP, how do you know what steamed shit smells like, for comparison purposes?

I think you should run your pots throught the washer a second time. That might fix things.

In a word, sulfur.

It will smell less if it is very fresh. Yours might be a bit too close to its "Sell By" date.

Also you can steam it less, and finish it off with a light sautee in a pan with oil and herbs and salt. You're probably steaming it too long if it really stinks.

My pots and dishes are always given a scrub with the scrub brush before they go in my dishwasher. Everything is brushed and rinsed before going in. To me the dishwasher is a sanitizing machine with its jets of scalding hot water and heat dry cycle that makes the pots and dishes burning hot killing germs, like a hospital's autoclave. So that can't be it. I'm very clean. All of my kitchen cupboards have contact shelf liner on them which is changed once a year for a new pattern. I even brush between the tines of my forks before they too go into the dishwasher. When my dishes are done they sparkle with hypnotic brilliance.

But thanks for the sulfur reference. At least that's a start to learning the mystery of the scent.

Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, all cabbages stink to a degree (except perhaps cauliflower). Yes, broccoli stink. It's still one of my favourite vegetables.

^^^ this.

Over-steaming really brings out the sulfur smell. Last night I was steaming some broccoli to add to a medley of grilled vegetables (no room on the grill for the broccoli). As soon as I detected that sulfur smell, I knew I'd over-cooked the broccoli, and would be throwing it out.

I'm still upset over my stinky urine after eating asparagus.

It only stinks if you over-steam it or over-cook it.

I cook it by boiling usually: Bring a pot of water to a boil. Drop the broccoli in (usually cut up). When the water returns to a boil (usually just under a minute), take the broccoli out. it should be bright green. It should NOT be limp.

If it's smelling bad, then you're over-cooking it, and you're a bad person, and you should feel bad.

Try adding a little white vinegar to the water.
