Comfort entertainment
I've had a flu for a few weeks and life's been a bitch in other ways as well so I'm pretty low in the spirits. I'm lying in front of my tv and was wondering what are the feel good tv shows or films you like to watch when feeling down?
I rarely watch them anymore but when I just think of Golden Girls I feel safe. When I was a kid Golden Girls aired on late Sunday nights where I lived and it was always sort of a happy ending to the weekend before going back to school. TBH I feel sad knowing that almost all the girls are gone now so it's a bittersweet feeling thinking about them. I sometimes do still watch GG episodes when I'm feeling down.

OP, this is going to be an obvious one, but: Judy Garland, Wizard of Oz and Easter Parade.

Dear OP: try listening to this INSANELY CATCHY new song by Ms Carly Rae Jepsen (yes she's back!); it might just do the trick!

Listen to SITPWG, especially Move On through the end. The most beautiful 20 minutes of music ever written or recorded. Always brings comfort and makes me cry.
For tv shows Parenthood, Friends, Hart of Dixie. If you want to get absorbed in something start Lost over again from the beginning and binge watch. Look out for all the clues now that you know the ending. You can also go the trashy route and escape with Melrose Place or work through the pain with some House.

OP, the flu should not be lasting "a few weeks". You should see a doctor.

Murder She Wrote is my favorite comfort TV show. I never cared for Golden Girls and most other sitcoms much because the lack of any exterior shots gives them a claustrophobic feel. At least JB Fletcher walks up and down the Universal studios backlot all the time.

Anything by Victoria Wood. But particularly "Dinner Ladies". When my father died, it is what got me through.

The Golden Girls for me too. I have an awful sinus infection in addition to strep throat. I watched Golden Girls last night. I loved the flu episode.

Thank you for fucking my end
Fucked me once or twice and then again
You're heart is true
You're a pal not a stupid Jew
And if you threw a party, invited everyone but Jews
You would see
Every Iz-ray-al-ee
Would say "Oh vey I'm so oppressed, plant tress in Israel."

R4, I thought I was better already but I've been having a little cough for a few days and now feel a little feverish so I guess it's the flu's aftermath now.
R2, Jepsen song actually sounds nice for what it is. I don't mind mindless bubblegum. R3, I've never been into musicals but thanks for the suggestion.
I'm liking what people are watching. Some films I find comforting are Paul Newman's From the Terrace and some Douglas Sirk melodramas. I'm normally into current action and sci-fi so those old movies feel dreamy and beautiful.

Old 1980s miniseries are my favorite comfort entertainment. Last time my partner was gone for the weekend, I made cocktails and watched When Tomorrow Comes with Madolyn Smith and Tom Berenger, I'll Take Manhattan with Valerie Bertenelli and a young Julianne Moore, and Deceptions with Stephanie Powers and Barry Bostwick. Bostwick as also in I'll Take Manhattan.

My husband loved watching M*A*S*H while he laid dying, ruined it for me, glad it was a comfort.
I'd probably be watching Dynasty given I've not after all these years. Dynasty or DL, what to do?

For OP:
I had a flu that lingered/see-sawed for almost three weeks.
Saw my doctor twice. She told me that the flu strains this winter are very strong and tenacious.
You shouldn't worry about it too much; you are in good company.
But go back and see your doctor if you are still feeling lousy a few days from now.
Get lots of rest and enjoy your comfort TV.

Michael Palin travelogues. Nothing like pretending to travel the world in the company of a funny and good-natured old fellow.
I have some of his shows on DVD, and wish Netflix had them all on streaming.

I don't like commercial tv for comfort viewing. I find tv ads too jarring and depending on the channel, a bit depressing. TCM is good or somtimes I will put a dvd that i like on repeat and fall in and out of sleep.

Which part of The Shining do you find the most comforting, r31?
The part where human blood floods the hotel hallway, or when Jack Nicholson chases Shelley Duvall through the bathroom door with an axe?

The Shining is strangely comforting. The first parts before Jack goes nuts are like the calm before the storm.

Speaking of Woody Allen, Try Match Point. I thought of that when I saw Noir movies.
I like something that will be engrossing, but not burdensome. I want to be distracted, but I want it to be substance. Not too much, because I don't want to strain my brain, but some substance. Like, I've seen The Godfather a million times. I can recite the dialogue without even thinking about it. But if I'm sick and vegging out, I like to watch it, because I can doze off and not miss anything and yet it is substance. See?

I watch a lot of things on YouTube, from The Carol Burnett Show, to British history documentaries presented by Lucy Worsley, Suzannah Lipscomb, Helen Castor, and Dan Jones. "Who Do You Think You Are" is a good one for a sick day or a rainy Sunday spent in pajamas.
