What's exciting so far?
New music in 2015

People in the Alabama Shakes thread didn't seem to like this, but I was impressed with their performance on SNL.
I'm no fan of theirs, but I couldn't get this song out of my head for a few days after. It's enough that I'll check out the new CD when it comes out next month.
"Gimme All Your Love"

I agree with R7 Years and Years song King is the best song so far in 2015 and the video is great too.

Years and Years is awesome. Everything Everything has a new album coming out. The new Dutch Uncles album is not that bad. The first few tracks from Florence and the Machine are OK. Citizens! have new album coming out and so far what they released as singles are fantastic. These New Puritans will release a new album later this year. The Bjork album is not a bad one, not a great one but a lot better than her last App album. Rhodes put out a pretty good EP. Fyfe released a fucking fantastic album. His voice is incredible. Suede will have a new album out. The Prodigy released a new one it isn't that bad. Only Real released his debut LP which is very summery. Blur's new album isn't that bad. Patrick Wolf will be putting a new album out. The Vaccines will be releasing a new one too (so far the tracks from that one are great). Lots of other stuff too

Sufjan is like Annie Clark and other hipster, calculated, measured music but sonically, totally emotionally censored. Their approach is style over depth. Far too self aware, whispy and boring and insipid WASP music.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 31, 2015 8:35 AM |
oh my goodness, anything by Katy Perry & Shakira! ...wooohooo!!
NOT!!!! ...who are these talentless hacks?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 31, 2015 8:39 AM |
Tori Amos is reissuing newly mastered editions of Little Earthquakes and Under the Pink in April, can hardly wait.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 31, 2015 1:03 PM |
R17
It's like you haven't listened to one lyric of his new album. how is it "emotionally censored"? the entire album is about the death of his mother and his dealing with it. it's tragic and so personal.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 31, 2015 4:40 PM |
r20 is right. The new Sufjan album's lyrics are painfully, almost embarrassingly personal. r17 clearly has not listened to it but thought he could score a few cred points by being dismissive.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 31, 2015 4:54 PM |
I like the new Bjork album. Finally a good one from her.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 31, 2015 5:02 PM |
Not the lyrics, but Sufjan is such a measured and analytically stylistic, too self aware an artist. Everything he does, the sort of complete songs, not just the lyrics are too ciphered and calculated.
He sings these beautiful heartbreaking lyrics with an emotional steady and measured vocal, it's like he is singing words from a 100 year old journal.
There is nothing spontaneous, natural or extemporaneous about his work. It's almost like a corporate Pitchfork manufactured urban hipster singer songwriter.
I get he hasn't the vocal ability to let go in terms of his voice, but sonically and emotional and the dayglo hipster hop preposterous and structure of his persona, it gives an air of insincerity and pretentious to his work.

Roisin Murphy has a new album due out in May...I like the first single "Gone Fishin'"
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 31, 2015 5:38 PM |
PJ Harvey is suppose to release a record this year, but considering she finished recording it Feb. I doubt it will be out 'til next year. Let England Shake took a year from the date she finished recording to its release dated.
I really, really like the Florance and the Machine song, What Kind of Man, and I never cared for her previous work, thought it was too tame, but this sounds like her most non commercial indie sound yet.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 31, 2015 6:03 PM |
How come there are so many male singers with high-pitched voices (not counting the teenyboppers)? John Grant is the only alt-pop baritone I can think of at this moment.
[23] As for Sufjan's lyrics: I like the fact that there are still artists out there, who are ambitious when it comes to writing lyrics. Do you expect all literary authors, poets, etc. to be prosaic as well?
I also don't agree with the notion that all music should be confessional or deeply personal. Sometimes storytelling or singing from someone else's perspective, is a more interesting way to tackle personal issues or ideas.

BTW anyone get to watch PJ recording the album at Somerset House? Near The Memorials To Vietnam And Lincoln sounds intriguing.

Could someone start a new thread please along these lines: we are almost officially halfway through the decade now. What do you think is the #1 song of the Decade thus far, one that maybe will always be associated with this time, helps define it?
I know mine. Very curious as to what others think.
Wouldn't mind a thread on what film is the Best of the Decade thus far too. Far more difficult since there are very few obvious classics like "Godfather" or "Taxi Driver".

2015 for me is going to be about Years & Years, FKA Twigs, and Frank Ocean (pleeeease jesus!)
I’ll also be looking out for how Jussie Smollett’s album proper is received by the mainstream US audience -- that could be a game changer --well socioculturally, probably not artistically LOL

I guess technically it was 2014, but since it will compete in this season's awards Fun Home is the best new score of 2015.
Also another older score getting an official 2015 debut is The Visit, and though not top tier K&E, it nonetheless is very strong.

New Sufjan is indeed wonderful. I think it's already my fave album of his.
Also, new Death Cab for Cutie album came out recently. It's definitely worth a listen, and it's the last one with the original lineup, before the guitarist leaves.

I hear Janet is coming out with the album of her career and of the millinium! It's going to blow every other white female away, never to be heard from again! Janet is the only artist who should exist, all the other ones should just kill themselves! I hate any other signer who has had a better career than Janet, even though she's living in a country I've never heard of and she's the size of a house! So what if Madonna is nearly a Billionaire! She's fierce and will sell ten million albums the first week so she will go platinum! Diamond! Fuck the other bitches! Remember Rythum Nation? She was so fierce never mind that the album came out 25 years ago, it was that fierce that everyone is still talking about! DJ WrongTune in Canada even said on his blog it's the best album he's ever heard! "Eating Chicken Baskets and All You Can Eat Ribs At The State Fair" is going to sell millions of albums and sell out every state fair in the world. You'll all see!

r65, I am really excited about Rob Thomas' new album. "Trust You" is the first single which came out last week - he wrote and co-produced it with Ryan Tedder from One Republic. It is so hot, as he said on Twitter, "So hot it will melt your face right off your skull!"
It's definitely different from Rob's earlier solo stuff but I really like it. This might be the song of the summer.
He's been posting videos and pics from the video shoot all week on his Twitter account.
