My friend is taking REMERON

Any wisdom to impart?

by Anonymousreply 16March 2, 2019 11:12 AM

Isn't that the the girl who played Vanessa on the Cobsy Show?

Great for insomnia but causes significant weight gain.

I read that one was one of the best A/D. I took it for one month once, and I must have put on 10 pounds in that much time (I'm not sure: I was too scared to weigh myself). My stomach felt like a black hole sucking up all food 300 yards around me. What I had gained in one month I lost in six. YMMV though.

I took it about 15 years ago, after a psychotic break that was associated with severe insomnia, so Remeron was a good solution for the insomnia. Unfortunately, the side effects were very harsh: an insatiable appetite for carbs (I gained about 40 pounds over the two years I took it), weird dreams, and the early phase of acclimating to it was bizarre. But it worked very well on my depression and insomnia.

I took Remeron several years ago during a period when I had chronic pain and associated depression (don't have chronic depression). I am VERY SENSITIVE to a lot of medications and not very typical. That said, Remeron reduced my depression but I was in a kind of chronic stupor that even affected my ability to feel secure driving. I got off it after 6 months and was thankful to have it gone. I was also taking Neurontin for peripheral nerve pain, which was very helpful for the pain, but the combination with Remeron was nearly disabling. I got off Neurontin too after a couple of years.

PLEASE NOTE: Everybody's reaction is very different. Your friend won't know if Remeron works for him until he tries it. There are meds I tolerate (e.g., Trazodone which I take in a small dose for insomnia) that a friend of mine can't tolerate at all, etc.

What a frau! I bet you search the store shelves for any trace of peanuts or gluten that can send you into a death spiral.

Thanks for the feedback.

The friend is a teetotaler, never used drugs other than the occasional aspirin.

He's having big problems with insomnia and acute depression.

Well, honey, if he's a teetotaler, no wonder he's depressed. It's one thing not to drink, another to be a teetotaler.

I take Remeron for insomnia. I don't have a problem with food until dinner time. Then once I start eating, I have trouble stopping. I believe that is because of the Remeron. I'm 10 lbs over weight. This thread inspired me to stop taking the Remeron on Feb 1 to see if I lose the weight.

So far, I've found that I get to sleep fine, but I'm up early, even though I don't need to be, and even if I get to bed late. I also don't feel like I got good quality sleep. I hope that improves.

Based on what I've read here, I need to let it go 6 months. So we'll see.

Tell your "friend" we said hello...

....when next you see her in the mirror.

A lot of people keep saying they had a bigger appetite especially for carbs but my appetite stayed the same yet I still gained 75 lbs in one year and I absolutely bloated. Grant it I’ve always eaten crap and didn’t even have my first salad til I was about 33 but it sucked that I had to gain all that weight just when I was coming out. (Me going to West Hollywood) “Yay I’m finally out and proud!!!” (the gays) “Yeah but you’re fat so you might as well get your fat ass back in the closet, if you can even fit in there.” I’ve always seen weight gain or LOSS as a side affect. I don’t know anyone who’s actually lost weight from Remeron. Is there an antidepressant that’s been proven more likely to have weight loss as a side affect over weight gain?

by Anonymousreply 13March 2, 2019 8:05 AM

the weight gain comes because about a half hour after you take it you get hunger cravings. if you can resist them until an hour after you take it and go to bed you won't gain weight.

you won't be more hungry in the daytime

by Anonymousreply 14March 2, 2019 8:33 AM

all it did was knock me out cold, all I did was sleep 18 hours a day but everyone reacts differently

by Anonymousreply 15March 2, 2019 10:15 AM

I’m on it now . I have bipolar disorder and Remeron is one of the AD’s I can take that doesn’t make me manic. I haven’t gained any weight from it but I take it right at bedtime and also I get some form of cardio everyday. These meds are just different for everyone. It’s a crapshoot. I do notice it makes me more irritable. I’m like a 14 year old premenstrual girl.
