Take that, Grandmadonna!
I can't think of another entertainer who has kept their private life and public life apart like Sade has done during her whole career. Amazing.
Goes private for years, gets back in the studio, releases another hit album and tours with it and then back to reality and her life.
I'm always impressed by her.
Happy Birthday Sade and many, many more.
"Smooth Operator"......Live.

Agreed, R1. Her music has gotten a bit blah but it's always good for background music, and I applaud her ability to stay relevant and stay a lady, instead of a certain attention whoring hog we all know......

OP, didn't Sade also make a comparison between Madonna and a big mac?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 17, 2015 2:27 AM |
Love her. Saw her during her last tour because I thought it might be my last chance.
Yes, Sade's music is a very particular blend of R&B, light jazz, adult contemporary. I understand why some people find it "blah".
But, I love it. Like food, there's different music for different times, different moods. And, Sade's music is perfect for me when I want something, lighter, airier, smoother. In fact, I do like Sade for "background music" - something to listen to while I do shit around the house, or when I'm in bed with someone concentrating on them. Nothing wrong with that, IMO.
BTW, she was incredible live. Her voice is superb. No, she's not huge-voiced diva with enormous range and lots of vocal tricks. But, what she does well, she does incredibly well.

The first four albums were between 1985 and 1992, but then the big gaps started - 2000 and then 2010. So, we're going to waiting until at least 2018. Lol.
I hope Sade (the band) does one more album before they call it quits, and hopefully sooner rather than later - like 2016.

I saw her/them on their last tour, the 'Soldier of Love' tour. I had never seen Sade live before and did not sneak peeks on YouTube. It was a big big deal; I expected a plain stage and instead it was a full spectacle of lighting, projections, and moving stage parts. It was extraordinary, I loved it.

She is being too kind. A more apt description would be if she said minutes later you're sick to your stomach and your bowels feel like they are about to explode.

I loved Soldier of Love. I thought that song had a very classic, yet updated Sade sound. It is very well produced.

I've always loved how nonchalant Sade is. She doesn't give a damn about fame. She just makes an album occasionally, tours seldom, and the rest of the time she lives a private life. And no matter how long she takes in between projects, she always has a huge fan base waiting for her.
Vadge on the other hand lives for attention and can't go one day without posting on social media because her life is so sad and empty. Vadge also fucked up her face.

Loved her from the start. She was just so different. She still gorgeous but back in the day she couldn't be beat in the looks department. I have everything she's done. Including the hard to find Killer Blows from Absolute Beginners.
I loved how her record company was not to thrilled about releasing her last album. They thought she had been forgotten. It debuted at #1.

Interesting, r12. I checked into tickets and they were more than $100 with fees, and I wondered what you got for that price besides the admittedly excellent Sade and a small band.

I saw her on her recent tour (sat close) and she looks gorgeous. A mature beauty but just as gorgeous.
From an interview:
"She tells me about a graffitied poster of herself that her guitarist Stuart Matthewman spotted in New York. Above her glamorous image, some wag had sprayed the observation: “This bitch sings when she wants to.” Sade thinks this hilarious. It sums up her career pretty well. She makes music on her own terms."

It was great when Soldier of Love crashed the charts. Especially, since behind her back, the record executives were calling her "grandma" and saying they were only releasing it because of her contract. Must have been a shock up their ass.

I love Sade's music and her looks but she can be an absolute cunt at times. She's very loyal to the guys in the band(Stuart,Andrew and Paul)but she'd be lost without them musically. They all work together to make the music with Sade being the driving force.Stuart has called her a benevolent dictator.Stuart and Paul have been playing with Sade before the Sade band. They were in a band called Pride together.
Sade also liked women. Sexually that is. Before Diamond Life she had a female lover. A very butch one at that. She seemingly went strictly dickly at one point.
As bitchy as Sade is,I have to give her credit for saying this about Madonna:"I avoid talking about Madonna because it makes me feel like being in a lavatory."

I remember an interview with her from years ago and they asked her how she stayed so private. She said she just does not delve into her private life because once you open that door, you can never close it. I mean, people know basic things about her, but she never seemed compelled to tell all her business and personal life. I am sure this part of what ads to her mystic. I wish some other celebs would follow suit.
Why the fuck is her name pronounced "Shardee" when there isn't even an "r" in the spelling? How stupid.
It's "Shah-Day". I remember seeing on one of her CDs in the 80s her name written on the side as "Sade ('Shar-Day')", which is how someone with a non-rhotic English accent would transcribe it: to a Brit the r in "Shar-" indicates a lengthening of the vowel and not an actual r as it would to a North American.

Yeah, her record company thought Sade was over, then the "Soldier of Love" album debuted at #1 on the Billboard chart and stayed at #1 for a month. Then she sold out every ticket on every stop of her tour. That's just all kinds of awesome.
I've always loved Sade and her music, and like others have said I also love the fact that she's not a fame whore like so many celebrities. She does her thing, then goes back to her private life and she's always been pure class all the way. And she's still just as gorgeous as she was all those years ago when she started out. However Kate is not a cunt and Sade can be. Kate Bush's music can be very weird and quirky.Sade has had far more tours(that's an understatement). R86 what are you talking about? First of all, no, Kate Bush is not a great or even good singer. She was quite pitchy and sharp in a lot of her songs. Secondly what do you mean "trying to sell my bullshit every time Kate is mentioned"? Maybe you're confusing me with some other posters. Clearly I'm not the only one who knows her voice is paper thin, whiny and just bad.

R87 KB is more talented than Sade.I love what Sade does but it is mere fluff when compared to Kate's stuff. That being said, Sade aged a helluva lot better than Kate did. Oh and Sade is a big old bitch. Though it was nice of her to let her band mates(Stuart,Andrew and Paul) share in the wealth of it all.

"Sade relies on Stuart,Andrew and Paul for her music Kate writes her own music."
Sade doesn't "rely" on them, she composes the songs (lyrics are mostly her own) with the band. Her bands solo records are good but nowhere near as good as Sade's music.

R90 Wrong. Kate writes every single note and lyric to her music. Not to mention she has been producing her own records since 1982.Sade barely dabbles in keyboards at best.So musically speaking mostly Stuart and Andrew were involved in creating the music from day one. Without the other three members of Sade the entire sound, production and music would be different. Sade relies on Stuart, Andrew and Paul(sometimes Leroy Osbourne) for the music, that was my point. I never mentioned the lyrics.
Sweetback (Stuart,Andrew and Paul's side group)has done some good stuff. Particularly, You Will Rise.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | January 18, 2015 3:12 PM |
r99: I am not comparing Sade to Kate Bush (not too familiar with her work). However, Sade and its sound is Sade's vision realized with the help of her band mates. Like I said, Sweetback's stuff is good but nowhere near in the same league as Sade's music (which seems to indicate how crucial Sade herself is to the success of the band).
Stop trying to pretend Sade isn't the figurehead of the band and the main, though not the only, contributor to its success and endurance.

R100 You're still wrong. Sade is a good singer, great beauty etc so on.I never said that she's not the front woman of the band. I even mentioned that she is a benevolent dictator of sorts. She's not as adept musically as a Kate Bush so she can't be a megalomaniac in the studio like Kate is.What I am saying is that musically the ideas come from the other three band members. The quality of Stuart,Andrew and Paul's music, musicianship and production(along with Mike Pela and Leroy Osbourne) has helped Sade(the group)survive all these years.Sade Adu could have gotten rid of the other Sade members a long time ago but she knows what works for her.

R115 yes 1 of a kind. an annoying kind. Who knew the Kate Bush stans on this site were as obsessive and protective as the Madonna stans? Kate Bush sounds an annoying mosquito while Madonna has that sucking-on-helium sound. Kate Bush with her pretentious weird shit was the predecessor to other weird non-talents like Tori Amos and Florence & The Machine. That miming shit she kept doing was stupid. Madonna was the one who popularized the "be-controversial-to-get-popular" trend. Both have played their part in ruining music.
Sade has a regal voice.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | January 18, 2015 8:33 PM |
R117 Sade has a nice voice(I like her voice but I wouldn't call it regal) but she looks like a fashion disaster of the highest order in that picture @ R110. She doesn't look regal but looks like a homeless lesbian who just picked up something from a dumpster. So much for her cultivated and elegant image.
On KB you are completely clueless. Unlike Madonna,Janet,Sade Adu and a list of many she has the respect of her peers. Even that cunt John Lydon who hates everyone loves Kate's music.Unlike most of these female singers she has written the lyrics and music to all her songs.
Is it true that Madge the Vadge wasn't on KB's comp list for her recent shows? I can see Sade doing that but if KB did she really did a good job there.

by Anonymous | reply 121 | January 18, 2015 9:08 PM |
R121 The whole bag lady image clashes with her smooth goddess persona though. She comes across as a princess on stage but is really more of a pauper.
She was renovating the old house in the countryside with her ex-miltary boyfriend?LOL What spin. With her millions they could afford to hire someone else's services. She's a slob in her real life, grin and bear it.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | January 18, 2015 9:18 PM |
R118 that is a candid pic and she's not at an event. She doesn't feel the pressure to glam out in her daily life. Nothing wrong with that. Her beauty shits all over Kate Bush any day.
Who the fuck is John Lydon? That Sex Pistols piece of shit murderer? Since when is his opinion important? He is talentless himself. I don't care if "critics" love boring and annoying Kate Bush. She's not that good. I'm sure Sade has the respect of her peers too. The popularity of Sade beyond the UK and the lack of Bush's popularity outside of the UK is 1 of the RARE times when the world got it right. Kate Bush is someone who is only referred to as a "legend" by her clueless stans. The rest of the world knows better. Actually most people don't even know who the fuck she is.

R123 Gives new meaning to a clueless cunt/annoying troll.KB might be heavier but she's still cute.I like Sade's music but it is on a different level than KB's. KB is a visionary, Sade Adu not so much.Adu doesn't have the respect of her peers at all. Some of them see her as an AC/Smooth Jazz confection and nothing more. John Lydon is quite a witty character. He likes KB so he does have good taste indeed.
R126 She looks glamorous in her "stage" persona and looks wretched there. I knew someone who knew her and she was extremely chic many years ago. She's gone considerably down market since then.

Kate Bush is fat.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | January 18, 2015 11:24 PM |
R127 you're the annoying pro-talent-deprived Kate Bush cunt troll. She was never pretty either. You have low standards in both music and what you find attractive. Not surprising I guess. Sade does have respect of her peers. No one except the UK and a few freaks outside the UK gives a FUCK about Kate Bush. Lydon likes Kate Bush? Then he has shitty taste too. I love how you're trying to justify her music by talking about some other has-been celeb liking her.
and so what if Sade runs around off-stage non-glamorous? The point is she CAN and DOES turn it out big time on stage when she's performing. The rest doesn't matter. Kate Bush looks like crap on and off stage and even in her prime could never compete with Sade.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | January 19, 2015 12:51 AM |
R130 needs to take her meds.Adu is not well liked by her peers. Sade is a big time cunt. She's stepped on a lot of toes.Bush on other the other hand is lauded by other musicians and is well liked . Bush is popular outside the UK. So popular that she was making millions in royalties each year so she didn't have to work. Just like Adu. Even though Sade is part of the band she gets a big share of the royalties.
You must be losing your sight as well. Kate is was quite cute when she was younger. Sade had an amusing take when she was asked about her beauty. She replied that she didn't think she was beautiful. Why? Her forehead looked like a grapefruit!
R128 Miles Davis liked Nik Kershaw too! Talk about the height of bad taste.
R129 She lost weight she's not as fat as she was.

R131 Kate Bush never had a hold on the biggest market in music, the US. Sade did and still has a big following. She is no doubt more famous and popular than Kate Bush ever was, except for in the UK and maybe commonwealth countries. Kate Bush was average-looking at best in her youth. Just a typical Brit girl, nothing more. Sade has always had a unique look and her beauty has stood the test of time.
You wanna talk cunt? there's nothing more cunty than Kate Bush's pretentious, affected music.
Deal with it. Sade >>>>>>>>>>>> Kate Bush

And speaking of popularity:
"Kate Bush has set a new Official Chart record after becoming the first female in history to score eight albums on the Official Albums Chart simultaneously.
Following a triumphant start to her critically acclaimed Before The Dawn live shows (her first in over 35 years), legendary British singer/songwriter Kate Bush has claimed a place in history as the female with the most simultaneous entries in the Official Albums Chart Top 40.
As well as dominating this week’s albums rundown including two albums in the Top 10, Kate now rides only behind Elvis, the overall record holder who managed 12 entries in the Top 40 following his untimely death in 1977, and The Beatles who notched up 11 simultaneous Top 40 entries with their 2009 album reissues.
Though not an exhaustive list, other notable female achievements in this area - Madonna had three albums in the Top 40 in 1987, as well as featuring heavily on the Who’s That Girl film soundtrack which was also in the Top 40 at the time. Following their untimely deaths in 2011 and 2012, both Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston saw two of their albums simultaneously enter the Top 10 and Top 75, respectively. And Joan Baez dominated the charts for several weeks in the summer of 1965 with three albums in the Top 20."

Kate Bush is not running up any hills these days.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | January 19, 2015 1:54 AM |
Kate is still best known in the US for "Running" and "Don't Give Up"...which is a damn shame since later singles like "Experiment 14" (AWESOME horrific video featuring Dawn French and Hugh Laurie), "The Sensual World" and "Big Sky" were vastly superior to those two.
Sade has had an enviable career. Who is the equivalent today? I would have said Corinne Bailey Raye but she hasn't hit big in years. Emelie Sande is more of a belter than a crooner. I think Jessie Ware had a chance with her first, now classic CD, but the recent "Americanized" one was not as good as the first, IMO.

R139 and that's on the UK charts, not the bigger US market. Of course Kate Bush will always be hugely popular in the UK as they often have poor taste. Kate Bush is irrelevant, forgotten or unknown in most of the world.

R143 That's why people from all over the world went to see KB's shows in London? She is popular outside Britain and has followers in the US. She has made millions of pounds a year from royalties. One cannot do that from being popular in Britain alone.Oh and Sade the group is from the UK. Judging from your faulty logic they must have bad taste and the British public for liking Sade's music as well!
by Anonymous | reply 145 | January 19, 2015 2:36 AM |
Sade has had an enviable career. Who is the equivalent today?
No one, really. Maybe Norah Jones.
There's a very small group of artists who, with next to no airplay, will still sell substantial amounts of an album. Sade, Annie Lennox and Norah Jones are on this list (though I think Annie's most recent album sold weakly). Anita Baker was on this list for a time. Tori Amos is sometimes on the list, and was with her last album.
And that's kind of it. Younger artists are selling a tenth of what earlier ones did....not because they're better, worse or otherwise, but younger fans will steal this shit online because they're supremely ethically challenged.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | January 19, 2015 2:39 AM |
I didn't say the UK always had bad taste, just often.
There has always been a lot of shitty pop acts, or acts who should been over much faster but had prolonged success in the UK (Spice Girls etc).
Sade is an example of a great act from the UK. Kate Bush is a stereotypically weird and annoying UK pop act.
Kate Bush is unknown by a lot of people and a lot of people under 40 never heard of her, fortunately for them.

R147 You are delusional. You lie and make stuff up and expect people to accept it think again. There is nothing stereotypical about KB at all. She is a British(and Irish) original.
People under 40 know Sade's music? LOL Sade became popular on AC,Lite FM,Soul and Smooth Jazz formats. Smooth Jazz doesn't exist anymore and the other three formats are dominated by older demos. So it is very likely that people over 40 know Sade's music not younger.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | January 19, 2015 2:56 AM |
LMAO at you trying to compare Snoreah to Sade. Please!
I don't care much for Norah Jones, R148. The point I was making was more from a sales perspective for all the artists I mentioned.
Jones is one of the few people that, like Sade, can be gone for several years and then drop a new album and still sell the shit out of it.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | January 19, 2015 2:58 AM |
R150 Snoreah has never gone more than 3 years in between albums. When she can go 8 to 10 years in between albums and can still sell a shitload of albums and sell out arenas, then I'll agree.
Kate Bush is a stereotypically weird and annoying UK pop act.
Do you actually know anything about Kate Bush or pop music in general?
Kate Bush was and is an original. She paved the way and was an inspiration to a lot of musicians, because she completely and utterly owned her work. And she did this from the age of sixteen.
She sounded unlike anything else when she first appeared on the music scene. She is the opposite of a stereotype.
Anyway, I'm wasting my time here.

R149 at the very least, EVERYONE knows "Smooth Operator". There is no Kate Bush song that is known all over the world.
R152 Kate Bush is an original but she has that weirdness that is popular in the UK. She does annoying weird shit in her videos. Some call it "artsy". Others see through her and call it weird, pretentious shit. Bush is someone who you know is British just by looking at or listening to her, and not in a good way. Super shrill too. Just awful.

The rest of your post... well, that's your taste. I have nothing to say about it.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | January 19, 2015 3:31 AM |
lmao no fucking way is "Running Up That Hill" more known than "Smooth Operator". No US station plays Kate Bush! Sade still gets love on 80s/90s channels, soft rock and jazz stations.
Every single Sade album has gone platinum in the US. In fact, only her last album failed to go multi-platinum. By contrast, Kate Bush managed to go gold in the US a paltry ONE time. Sade is much more famous and popular everywhere except in the UK.
If you conquer the biggest market in the world, you are popular all over the world. Bush couldn't do that. Sade could.

R155If you want to play the sales card artists like Madonna, Janet etc so on have trumped the group called Sade.In essence, if sales meant something then Madonna,Janet are more world renown than Sade. That means they are somehow better right? Wrong. That's faulty logic on your part.

Sade in 2012 on Janet Jackson:
[italic]"In the music business, there was talk that she was “difficult” and not really interested in working, charges that Sade always denied. “It’s partly just because I don’t do what the others do,” she said. “It’s because I don’t give a damn if Janet Jackson’s at number one and I’m at number 10. I really don’t care, and I think a lot of the others do. Therefore, people separate me from the others. But really I’m not that extremely different. It’s just that there’s a lot more things I’m not prepared to do."[/italic]

Is Sade more talented than Kate? History would say no. Kate is a musical prodigy, and a complete singer songwriter who produces her own material. In terms of her influence on other female singers songwriters who came to the scene in the late 80s and 90s, she is a far bigger influence than Sade.
And a woman who writes every note of her songs is more talented than a woman without an original bone in her body? No kidding. How did you get to that brilliant conclusion?
